Facts of Life,” “Diff’rent Strokes,” and “Wheel of Fortune” Themes By Alan Thicke To Be Inducted to Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

0

The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the song inductions of Facts of Life, Diff’rent Strokes and Wheel of Fortune, co-written by Alan Thicke. Beloved Canadian actor, singer, composer and songwriter Alan Thicke is best recognized as TV dad Jason Seaver on the hit sitcom Growing Pains; however, his lifelong love of music has shaped a highly successful career behind the scenes penning some of the most memorable television theme songs of all time.

“The Thicke Family is honoured to accept this recognition on my father’s behalf,” says Robin Thicke. “My father was a proud Canadian and although he was mostly known for his acting, hosting and philanthropic work, deep down he always wanted to be Gordon Lightfoot or Bruce Springsteen.” He adds, “There is no doubt that Alan would consider having his songs being inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as one of his life’s greatest achievements. We are sure he is playing his catalog for all his friends in heaven right now. We love and miss you Alan Thicke.”

“These three iconic theme songs that will be inducted to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame harken to the halcyon days of ‘80s television when family sitcoms and game shows brought multi-generational families together in their living rooms,” said Vanessa Thomas, Executive Director of CSHF. “Alan Thicke had a unique talent to create catchy, memorable and relatable songs that appeal to a mass audience while concisely encapsulating the essence of a show. Each song became as popular and synonymous with its show, as the characters and actors who starred in them.”

During the 1970s and 1980s, TV theme songs reigned supreme, with comedies, game shows and dramas providing many well-loved tunes. Among these were the catchy themes to the game show, Wheel of Fortune, and hit sitcoms The Facts of Life and Diff’rent Strokes, all written by Thicke, who had more than 40 television themes to his credit.

Thicke’s original theme to the long-running game show Wheel of Fortune introduced the show from 1975 to 1983. Entitled Big Wheel after the game’s roulette wheel, Thicke’s theme was a jazzy instrumental featuring horns and percussion; and appears on the album “The Best of TV Quiz and Game Show Themes.”

The happy theme song (It Takes) Diff’rent Strokes for the TV sit-com Diff’rent Strokes (1978 to 1986) was written by Thicke with American co-writers Gloria Loring (his first wife) and TV producer Al Burton. The lyrics, for which Thicke sang backing vocals, opens with “Now the world don’t move to the beat of just one drum,” and features the chorus “It takes different strokes to move the world,” to describe the show about a blended family from different socio-economical and racial backgrounds.

Thicke recalled what it was like to compose theme songs during their heyday: “The challenge was, you have 24 seconds to do something catchy and memorable and sum up the entire premise of the show in case somebody had never seen it before. You had to do it with an internal rhyme scheme and a perky little ditty — so it was an interesting challenge.”[1] Musing about how television theme music has changed, Thicke said, “Back then, theme songs were more important. They were a part of every show…I think that’s almost a lost art.”[2]

The sitcom Facts of Life was a Diff’rent Strokes spin-off. Its upbeat, contagious theme song, written by the Thicke-Loring-Burton trio, hooked viewers in until the show became NBC’s No. 1 TV comedy, running for nine seasons from 1979 to 1988. The song, performed by Loring, opens with “You take the good, you take the bad, you take ’em both and there you have the facts of life.” Upon Thicke’s passing in 2016, Loring told Billboard.com: “Here we are all these years later and Facts of Life is still one of the top theme songs ever. He just had this great facility with words.”[3]

Following the televised virtual presentation of Thicke’s song inductions on August 7, fans will be able to view the permanent exhibitions honouring CSHF inductees and song inductions at the National Music Centre, located at Studio Bell, in Calgary. The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame recently celebrated the induction Ron Hynes during the virtual presentation of the 2020 East Coast Music Awards on July 11; and earlier this year announced the 2020 induction of Kim Mitchell who will be honoured at a later date.

The National Music Centre is the physical home of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and will continue to honour and preserve the legacy of new inductees through exhibitions which feature stories, exclusive artifacts, and one-of-a-kind memorabilia.

Midge Ure Announces Backstage Lockdown Club Launching On September 5

0

Midge Ure announces his Backstage Lockdown Club launching on September 5th. The Backstage Lockdown Club gives the viewer exclusive, regular access to a series of intimate, musical events on a monthly subscription basis. Every month there will be at least one, (for a minimum of 45 minutes) Club Event with the opportunity to make musical requests, Q+A sessions, acoustic songs and just generally chat with Midge, all live from his Environment Studio. These will usually be at 7:30 pm UK time which should allow the US and Europe to join, and occasionally he’ll do morning slots to enable Japan, Australia and New Zealand to join in.

When he can get back to being able to do normal live shows again, Club members will have exclusive access to tickets and the opportunity to purchase Club only tickets for Pre-Show Acoustic/Q&A sessions at some shows.

There are also plans for exclusive Club merchandise and hopefully some full band live performances when circumstances allow. Pricing and more info can be found here.

Midge says, “Like most musicians everything lined up for the rest of 2020/2021 has been postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic and the outlook for returning to touring as we all knew sometime in the near future is remote to say the least. So I devised the Backstage Lockdown Club to enable me to still connect with a global audience and for them to connect with me in a safe and painless way. There have been many artists doing a great job performing via internet services, singing into their webcams from their sitting rooms, bedrooms, kitchens etc so I wanted to do something different. I have spent the past three months of lockdown investing in learning how to broadcast high quality, multi-camera, studio based performances. Capturing the intimate, atmospherics a stage show would hopefully create.

“For the price of a couple of cups of designer coffee per household you can join me in the BLC on a ‘pop in pop out’ monthly basis or hang on in there for the long run….however long it takes before we get to be in the same room. As a club member you will get two events ranging from solo acoustic shows, Q+A sessions, shows featuring musician friends etc. There will be opportunities for members to access ‘meet and greets’ at specific venues and pre-sale purchase of tour tickets when that comes around. It’s as close as we can get during these strange days.

Are we connected? Absolutely!”

YoungBoy Never Broke Again Releases First Singles From His Upcoming Album, Top “Callin (Feat. Snoop Dogg)” And “Murder Business”

0

Fresh off the announcement of his upcoming album, TOP, multi-platinum rap superstar YoungBoy Never Broke Again has officially released the second single from his highly-anticipated body of work, “Callin (Feat. Snoop Dogg)”; listen now via all digital retailers and streaming platforms HERE. The official music video for the release is now streaming via his official YouTube channel. “Callin” follows last week’s “Murder Business”; watch the official video below. His forthcoming album, TOP, has made history as the first album to ever go #1 solely off of pre-orders. The album is slated to release on September 11th, 2020.

The new releases follow this month’s colorful visual for “Kacey Talk,” a lyrical record named after his beloved son Kacey; the official video has already surpassed 20 MILLION views since its debut.

Recently, YoungBoy appeared on the ROAD TO FAST 9 mixtape, heralding the release of the next chapter in the acclaimed Fast & Furious film series, F9. “One Shot (Feat. Lil Baby)” arrived with an electrifying music video, now boasting over 10 MILLION views.

Earlier this year, YoungBoy Never Broke Again made history with the release of the highly-anticipated sequel to his 2016 breakout mixtape, 38 Baby. The release of 38 Baby 2 granted him his second #1 album and made YoungBoy the third artist in history to have had 3 top 5 albums on the Billboard Top 200 in a 12 month period, following in the footsteps of BTS and Future. 38 Baby 2 debuted as Billboard’s #1 Rap Album and #1 R&B/Hip-Hop Album, in addition to being #1 on the Top 200 Albums chart upon its release.

YoungBoy is on fire, having consistently released a number of rhythmic singles accompanied by energetic companion visuals. His project, Still Flexin, Still Steppin, was announced as both Billboard’s #1 Top Rap Album and #1 Hip-Hop/R&B Album shortly after its release months ago, in addition to being #2 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The stunning influx of accolades hints at the raw talent and continued success of the Baton Rouge, LA rapper.

Top 5 favorites at Mercury Prize 2020

0

We know the 12 nominations for the Mercury Prize 2020, and on the list there are some quite big names. The annual music prize awarded for the best album released in the United Kingdom by a British or Irish musician will be announced on September 24th.

The prize was established in 1992 as an alternative to the Brit Awards, and became increasingly popular over the decades. Since its inception, PJ Harvey is the only twice winner of the prize, while Radiohead has the most nominations – five.

For an album of a band to be eligible for the prize, over 50% of its members have to be British or Irish. Being shortlisted or even wining the prize gives the bands a significant boost in albums sales.

The prize is so popular that you can ever bet on it at the best betting sites. For example, at Unibet, Michael Kiwanuka is the favorite, with +200 odds. Laura Marling and Stormzy come second, each with +450.

But here are the top 5 favorites at winning the Mercury Prize 2020.

Michael Kiwanuka (+200)

Kiwanuka is the name of the album selected from the London-born artist. This is the third nomination for the 33-year old, who now has the best odds at winning the prize.

Michael Kiwanuka is the third artist to receive a Mercury nomination for each of the first three albums. The previous ones were released in 2012 and 2016. His indie and folk rock album was released in November 2019, peaked at number 2 in the UK charts, and has an impressive 89/100 score on Metacritic.

Laura Marling (+450)

Laura Marling is at her fourth nomination, after those in 2008, 2010 and 2013. “Songs for Our Daughter” is the name of this year’s album, being released this April.

The 30-year old singer and songwriter from Berkshire has an impressive career started at just 16. This is her seventh album, and it was inspired by Maya Angelou’s book, called “Letter to My Daughter”.

The folk rock artist also won the Brit Awards in 2011, for the Best British Female Solo Artist.

Stormzy (+450)

With the same odds as Laura Marling, Stormzy comes with a different style. His album, “Heavy Is the Hand” is a mix of British hip hop, soul, and grime genres.

The 27-year old Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr, his entire name, has already established himself as a big name in the British music industry, having won twice the Brit Award for the Male Solo Artist (2018 and 2020), and the Album of the Year (2018). Stormzy also performed at the Glastonbury Festival in 2019.

His current album, with which he is competing at the Mercury Prize 2020, reached the first place in the UK charts.

Kano (+550)

Like Stormzy, rapper Kano hopes to replicate the success of last year’s winner, Dave. Born in East Ham, London, the 35-year old hip hop singer released his sixth album, “Hoddies All Summer”, last August.

The album peaked at number 8 in the UK charts, and includes several guest appearances.

Charlie XCX (+800)

The Cambridge-born singer released her fourth studio album in May, being wrote and recorded in just six weeks. “How I’m Feeling Now” promotes electro pop and experimental pop, and has a review of 82/100 on Metacritic.

Charlie XCX, or Charlotte Emma Aitchison, began posting songs on Myspace in 2008, but her career started in 2010, at 18 years old, when she signed a recording contract with Asylum Records.

The singer was nominated for the best British Female Solo Artist, at the 2020 Brit Awards, and her 2014 song “Fancy” with Iggy Azalea was her highest critical and commercial success.

Wilco’s ‘Summerteeth’ Gets Deluxe Treatment Featuring Unreleased Studio Recordings, And Rare 1999 Concert

0

Wilco’s third album, Summerteeth, arrived in March 1999 to glowing reviews for its daring arrangements, lush harmonies and revealing lyrics. More than 20 years later, the Chicago-based band is expanding one of its best with multiple collections packed with hours of unreleased studio and live recordings.

The first is SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION, a four-CD set that includes a Bob Ludwig 2020 remastered version of the original album (making its CD debut), along with an entire disc of unreleased studio outtakes, alternate versions and demos that chart the making of the album from songwriting demos to alternate studio arrangements to finished masters.

Summerteeth introduced many fan-favorite classic tracks that the band continues to play live today, including “I’m Always In Love,” “A Shot In The Arm” and “Via Chicago.” The 24 previously unreleased recordings that debut on the DELUXE EDITION explore the making of the critically acclaimed album with demos “No Hurry” and “I’ll Sing It,” outtakes “I’m Always In Love” (Early Run Through) and “Viking Dan,” and alternate versions “Summer Teeth” (Slow Rhodes Version) and “Pieholden Suite” (Alternate).

The two remaining discs in the CD version of SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION feature a previously unissued live show. The concert took place late in the Summerteeth tour, on November 1, 1999 in Colorado at The Boulder Theatre, when the new songs had been road-tested and the band was in top form. Sourced from an uncirculated soundboard recording, it features band members Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Ken Coomer and Jay Bennett. Most of the songs on Summerteeth were performed during the show, along with several tracks from the band’s two previous records, Being There (1996) and A.M. (1995), as well as Mermaid Avenue (1999). The latter was the first in a series of albums that Wilco recorded with Billy Bragg where the group wrote music for and sang previously unheard lyrics penned by folk icon Woody Guthrie.

The CD set will be released on November 6 and will also be available from digital and streaming services.

A limited-edition vinyl version of SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION will also be released on November 6. Limited to 6,000 copies, the five-LP set features the remastered studio album as well as the unreleased demos, alternates and outtake recordings pressed on 180-gram vinyl. However, instead of the Colorado concert included in the CD package, the LP version contains a special, exclusive performance from early 1999 titled, An Unmitigated Disaster, a previously unreleased live in-store performance at Tower Records on March 11, 1999, just two days after the album was released. The 10-song set, which was broadcast on Chicago radio station WXRT-FM, highlights several tracks from Summerteeth (“We’re Just Friends,” “How To Fight Loneliness” and “Can’t Stand It”). This show will only be available in the LP collection.

Finally, a special 180-gram colored-vinyl version of SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION will also be released the same day. Limited to 2,000 copies, the five-LP set will be available exclusively from WilcoStore.com.

Additionally, Tweedy recently announced his second book, How To Write One Song, available on October 13 via Dutton. With How To Write One Song, Tweedy creates a candid and fascinating primer on the art form he knows best, revealing both the behind-the-scenes process, and the joy he gets from making something new.
