Doves Announce First Album In 11 Years ‘The Universal Want’ Out September 11

0

Doves recently revealed their first new music in eleven years with new track “Carousels” which received critical acclaim spanning Pitchfork, Stereogum, CLASH, Uncut and Under The Radar as well as radio plays with Sirius XMU, WXPN and more. Today, the band break their silence on new album rumours by announcing their long awaited fifth studio album, The Universal Want, set for release on September 11, 2020 through IMPERIAL in the US. Buoyed by refreshed chemistry, restless studio creativity and public reaction to their return, Doves have set free the album’s first single, “Prisoners”.

“Prisoners” is an unstoppable, driving tale of caution in a world of unending desire. Produced by Doves with Dan Austin and recorded at the band’s own Frank Bough Sound III studios in North West England, the high heat of its Northern Soul beat is fanned by wiry guitar breaks and cuts of ethereal noise contorting beneath layers of stacked vocals. A statuesque musical statement, “Prisoners” guides Doves’ second chapter to a peak now within touching distance, the lyrics contrasting to express unease with modern ills.

Andy Williams says of the single: “It’s about continually chasing something and not being satisfied when you eventually get it. You’ve got ‘that thing’ and you find you’re not any happier. Be careful what you wish for.”

Dropping breadcrumbs in rare interviews since they announced their return in late 2018, Jimi Goodwin, Andy and Jez Williams have remained reluctant custodians of their barely-kept secret of a new album throughout last year’s busy period of memorable festival and outdoor headline shows. Coming together to confirm themselves, once again, as an artistic unit for the first time since sessions ended on 2009’s Kingdom Of Rust, the cherished Manchester trio hint that The Universal Want has become an equally poignant and celebratory document of both time passed and time recouped.

“It’s definitely got the stamp of ‘the time’ all over it,” says Jez, when asked as to what lies ahead for fans who have waited patiently for over a decade for another record. “Everything on the album is an echo. It’s an echo of what we were going through at the time. Getting back together, the Royal Albert Hall and everything else.”

The Universal Want track listing:

1. Carousels
2. I Will Not Hide
3. Broken Eyes
4. For Tomorrow
5. Cathedrals Of The Mind
6. Prisoners
7. Cycle Of Hurt
8. Mother Silver Lake
9. Universal Want
10. Forest House

Dashboard Confessional Announces The Early Days Vinyl Reissue Series

0

Dashboard Confessional continue this year’s DC20 20th anniversary celebration by announcing The Early Days, a vinyl reissue series spotlighting the albums and EPs that defined the band’s formative years, and cemented singer/songwriter Chris Carrabba as one of the most vital voices that would reshape the musical landscape for years to come. The series kicks off with the first-ever vinyl pressing of 2001’s The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most, set for release on July 31st, 2020. A long-awaited vinyl re-release of 2000’s The Swiss Army Romance as well as a first-time pressing of 2002’s MTV Unplugged 2.0 will also follow later this year, and all will be available in multiple collectible, limited edition variants in addition to a non-limited edition run of standard black vinyl.

Two of the limited edition color vinyl versions of Places, in addition to black vinyl, are now available for pre-order HERE. The splatter color vinyl can be purchased only via the DashboardConfessional.com online store, while the cloudy orange and clear vinyl is available only via independent record stores, a community that has long-supported Dashboard Confessional. A yellow and blue vinyl, limited to only 1,000 copies, can be found exclusively at VinylMePlease.com, beginning tomorrow, July 10th.

The band has also announced an upcoming partnership with Mondo to release three EPs for the very first time on vinyl this year: 2001’s So Impossible, 2002’s Summers Kiss, and a newly created Spider-Man 2 EP. Mondo is an expanding enterprise with a passionate love of film, art, music and pop culture, best known for creating limited-edition posters, vinyl soundtracks, premium collectibles and games. Based in Austin, Texas, the team collaborates with an international network of talented artists and creators to produce the highest quality products inspired by licensed properties and original IPs. More details about the limited edition EPs will be announced later this year.

This year’s 20th celebration also included the release of Dashboard Confessional’s first-ever career-spanning compilation, The Best Ones Of The Best Ones, and their own installment in the Spotify Singles series (a reimagining of their breakthrough hit “Screaming Infidelities” and a cover of Post Malone’s “Circles”). After having to cancel the remainder of a predominantly sold-out tour of intimate rooms across the U.S. and Canada, Carrabba helmed a series of livestreams in late April. Most notably was the career-spanning charity show ‘As Social As I Get Now,’ which raised over $172,000 for the Music Health Alliance, a Nashville, Tennessee-based organization partnered with the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief project, which matched donations dollar-for-dollar.

6-Time JUNO Nominated Vocalist and Pianist Carol Welsman Invites You to “Dance With Me” This July

0

Six-time JUNO Award nominated jazz vocalist and pianist Carol Welsman is set to release her 13th album entitled Dance With Me, marking her foray into Latin jazz. The recording scheduled for release July 31, 2020 on Justin Time Records is an eclectic collection of international songs arranged with Latin rhythms including salsa, boleros, cha cha cha, Afro Cuban and calypso; all the while keeping within Latin jazz and traditional rhythms.

The selections include popular Latin standards adapted into English, Great American Songbook standards, original compositions, a Latin-flavored song penned by fellow Canadian Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive, and a duet with multi-GRAMMY winning Latin superstar, Juan Luis Guerra on the title track and first single release, which is an English adaptation written by Carol of his song “Si Tú No Bailas Conmigo” (If You Don’t Dance With Me).

Carol’s co-producer, Oscar Hernández, is a four-time GRAMMY winning composer and arranger. Given Oscar’s depth of knowledge of the Latin jazz idiom, Carol commissioned him to arrange all the music for the recording. She is surrounded by a stellar line-up of Latin musicians; Justo Almario on saxophones and flute, Joey de Leon on percussion, Rene Camacho on bass and Jimmy Branly on drums. The players hail from Colombian, Puerto Rican, Mexican and Cuban ancestry respectively.

Carol met Juan Luis Guerra a few years ago in Santo Domingo and told him how much she particularly liked his composition “Si Tú No Bailas Conmigo.” She wrote an English adaptation for it, and when Juan Luis heard it, he graciously accepted her invitation to guest star on the track.

Carol’s long-time Cuban drummer Jimmy Branly was instrumental in introducing her to Latin music, especially the music of Beny Moré; one of the most popular singers Cuba has ever known. Co-lyricist Jo Perry and Carol chose a number of these Latin standards and wrote English adaptations to them, Like “Y Hoy Como Ayer” (I Think Of You), “Como Fue” (Yesterday), and “Ya Llegó La Hora” (Time to Dance Cha Cha Cha). This is likely the first time these Latin classics will be heard by English audiences.

Welsman had the good fortune of meeting fellow Canadian Randy Bachman recently, and when she heard him sing “A Taste of Paradise,” she immediately included it in her repertoire. Randy, better known for his rock-influenced songs, was deeply inspired in his youth by guitarist Lenny Breau who actually introduced him to the bossa nova and the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Like on many of her previous recordings, Carol follows suit delivering two original songs on this album: “Island Lullaby” and “Revelations”; the latter of which is arranged with Afro Cuban and Venezuelan Horopo rhythms.

Carol’s strong connection with her fans has been front and center in her last two releases. For Dance With Me she embarked on her first Kickstarter campaign and the response was overwhelming. In keeping with the fan experience, Carol has launched a video contest asking fans to submit videos of them dancing to the title track. Winners of the contest, which runs through July 20th, will be included in her upcoming music video.

She has always had a passion for Latin rhythms, as can be witnessed on most of her recordings and with her debut Latin Jazz album, her international appeal now invites a whole new audience.

Dance With Me is available July 31, 2020.

Charlie Musselwhite, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Jimbo Mathus, Jim Dickinson, Luther Dickinson and Cody Dickinson Are the New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers

0

Stony Plain Records announces a September 4 release date for the first volume of music from roots “super group,” New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers: Charlie Musselwhite, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Jimbo Mathus, the late Jim Dickinson, and North Mississippi Allstars members Luther Dickinson and Cody Dickinson. Recorded at the Zebra Ranch Recording Studio in Coldwater, Mississippi, the 10 blues-drenched tracks of sublime roots music on New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers Volume 1 will be followed in the spring of 2021 by Volume 2. Pre-order the album here: https://stonyplainrecords.com/lp/newmoonjellyrollfreedomrockersvol1/

The New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers originated back in November 2007, when musician brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson sat down for a guitar jam with ex-Squirrel Nut Zippers leader Jimbo Mathus, along with blues greats Charlie Musselwhite, Alvin Youngblood Hart and the late Memphis pianist, producer and all around musical stylist Jim Dickinson, gathered for a roots music extravaganza recording under the group name of the New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers.

For more than 12 years, that recording’s existence was mentioned only obscurely in interviews, and referenced as a great old-school recording by those few witnesses. It was done “old school” style live off-the- floor over several days, where the musicians all sat in one big circle in the studio and played quietly amongst the microphones, taking turns singing out in the room and improvising on the spot. Since Jim Dickinson’s passing in the summer of 2009, the album just hung out in the archives, waiting. When Stony Plain founder Holger Petersen heard about the sessions this year and expressed his enthusiasm to release it, Luther Dickinson and his partner/engineer Kevin Houston finished the production of the album It is a testament to the great experience and talent of these esteemed performers that they could casually conjure a recording of this quality out of the ether this way, sounding as if the listener is right there in the room with them, with between-song banter and commentary, the classic structures of the blues, being pulled together and teased apart by some of the most award-decorated members of the blues elite. This album crosses the generations of new blues-rockers and classic blues statesmen.

“The New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers album was conceived in the back of a tour bus,” Luther Dickinson recalls. “Mavis Staples and Charlie Musselwhite had hit the road together, with the North Mississippi Allstars as the house band. The tour forged lifelong friendships and collaborations; it changed our lives in so many ways.

“The package tour was classic showbiz. We’d all been snookered; the tour bus wasn’t what we’d imagined. Instead of rock ‘n’ roll luxury, we found ourselves in hard-cushioned, straight-back retirement home mass transport. The stationary armrests made sleeping futile—so Charlie and I passed the miles shooting the breeze. Charlie made a list of great recordings I should check out, which became a catalyst for our recording session.

“The name of our recording project was born in the back of that ramshackle bus. We had a concept before we had a record. As I explained Alvin Youngblood Hart’s mission to live life as a ‘Freedom Rocker,’ Charlie pointed out the window: there was a new moon that evening. Suddenly, ‘New Moon Freedom Rockers’ materialized. (Dad added ‘Jellyroll’ after the recording session.).

“The Dickinson crew doesn’t enjoy parties, but we dig recording sessions and we love hustling up new recording projects. The New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers project was one of our ‘potluck’ recording session albums. For potlucks, we invite a cast of characters to the session/party, and ask each player to bring a couple of songs. Musicians take turns leading and accompanying, and before you know it, a record materializes. Dad said misery sticks to the tape. With that in mind, we always strive to have fun in the studio. Making collaborative records with new and old friends is a blast. The NMJRFR session was a love fest. We enjoy music as an artifact of friendship, a by-product of the hang.

“The cast of characters for Charlie Musselwhite’s Mississippi Hill Country homecoming recording session was perfect. We spent the first day recording the live set Charlie had taught the NMA. Then Alvin Youngblood Hart, Jimbo Mathus, and Dad joined the party—each took turns leading us through their pot-luck recording party recipes. The table was set, the feast began, and the session became a festival. The homemade, self-produced recording changed our lives.”

Each of the players in the band has impressive individual resumes, but together they add up to a whole greater than the sum of its parts.

Charlie Musselwhite is a living blues treasure: a Grammy winner, multiple Blues Music Award winner and Memphis Music Hall of Fame inductee. The recording sessions for NMJRFR enabled him to return to his roots. Having spent his childhood in the Mississippi Delta, he then moved to Memphis during the teenage heaven of the rock ‘n’ roll 1950s. In the late ‘50s, Charlie left his mother’s home and moved to Chicago looking for a job, only to find Maxwell Street, Chess Records, and a community of musicians who changed the world forever. In the psychedelic ‘60s he wound up in San Francisco, a “stranger in a strange land,” which he details in one of his featured performances on New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers Volume 1.

“I made up ‘Strange Land’ when I was eighteen, and had gone to Chicago to find a job,” Musselwhite remembers. “I’d be walking the streets with the classifieds in my hand, filling out job applications and not getting any positive feedback. I didn’t know a soul in Chicago, so as I walked the city, I started making up this song about being a ‘stranger in a strange land.’ I didn’t know there was a book that already had that title. Anyhow, a few years later when I recorded my first album, I put that song on there. I still get requests for it to this day.”

Alvin Youngblood Hart is a Grammy-winning musician who was born in Oakland, California, and spent some time in Carroll County, Mississippi, where he was influenced by the Mississippi country blues performed by his relatives. Hart is known as one of the world’s foremost practitioners of country blues. His debut album, Big Mama’s Door, came out in 1996. In 2003, Hart’s album, Down in the Alley, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album, and in 2005, he received a Grammy for his contribution to Beautiful Dreamer – The Songs of Stephen Foster.

Hart performed in the 2003 Wim Wenders film, The Soul of a Man, which was featured in Martin Scorsese’s PBS-TV series, The Blues. Hart was also featured in the documentary, Last of the Mississippi Jukes. In 2010, he teamed up with friends Jimbo Mathus and Luther Dickinson to form the South Memphis String Band. Their first album, Home Sweet Home, was nominated for Best Acoustic Album at the 2011 Blues Foundation Music Awards. The group released a second album, Old Times There, in early 2012.

One of Hart’s featured performance highlights on New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers Volume 1 is a bluesy work-up of Jimi Hendrix’s “Stone Free.”

Besides his previous work with Alvin Youngblood Hart and Luther Dickinson in the South Memphis String Band, Jimbo Mathus was a founder and leader of the roots-bending Squirrel Nut Zippers, a band formed in 1993 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, whose music was a fusion of Delta blues, gypsy jazz, 1930s–era swing, klezmer, and other styles. They found commercial success during the swing revival of the late 1990s with their 1996 single “Hell.” After a hiatus of several years, the original band members got together in 2007 and toured in the U.S. and Canada.

In 2016, The Squirrel Zippers reunited with a new lineup to tour in support of the 20th anniversary of their highest-selling album, Hot. In addition to his work with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Jimbo Mathus has recorded and produced a number of lauded solo records.

Jim Dickinson was a Memphis music legend for decades, performing solo as well as with a host of iconic international artists and local “Bluff City” musicians. In the 1950s, he recorded for the iconic Sun Records label in Memphis and later played on sessions at Chips Moman’s American Sound Studios. By 1966, Dickinson was a record producer at Ardent Studios working with numerous cutting-edge bands.

In the late 1960s, Dickinson joined with fellow Memphis musicians to form the Dixie Flyers, who backed a variety of performers, including Hank Ballard, James Carr and Albert Collins. In 1970, the group began to back many of Atlantic Records’ stable of soul acts under the guidance of famed producer Jerry Wexler. Then based at Criteria Studios in Miami, they recorded on Aretha Franklin’s 1970 hit, “Spirit in the Dark,” and contributed to recordings by Delaney and Bonnie, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ronnie Hawkins, Sam and Dave, Dion, Brook Benton, Lulu, Sam the Sham and Esther Phillips.

Dickinson left the group to pursue a solo career in 1971 and released his first solo album, Dixie Fried, on Atlantic in 1972. In addition to the Carl Perkins title song, the album featured songs by Bob Dylan and Furry Lewis.

In the 1970s, he became known as a producer, recording Big Star’s Third album in 1974, and serving as co-producer with Alex Chilton on Chilton’s 1979 album, Like Flies on Sherbert. He produced recordings for performers as diverse as Willy DeVille, Green on Red, Mojo Nixon, The Replacements, Toots and the Maytals and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.

As a session musician, he played piano with The Rolling Stones on “Wild Horses” for their historic 1970 Sticky Fingers album, recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio; and through the rest of the century played on nearly a dozen records with Ry Cooder, as well as on Bob Dylan’s 1997 album, Time Out of Mind.

With the North Mississippi Allstars, Jim Dickinson’s sons Luther and Cody have proven that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as they’ve embraced all manner of roots music in recording their own albums, as well as in collaborations with like-minded musicians who embrace the spirit of musical discovery and the sheer enjoyment of playing.

The Allstars’ first release, Shake Hands with Shorty, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Since then, 51 Phantom and Electric Blue Watermelon have received nominations in the same category. The group also won a Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut in 2001. Luther Dickinson also has received three Grammy nominations in the Traditional Folk category as a solo artist.
The band has backed and toured with John Hiatt and released an album with him, Master of Disaster, and later teamed up with Robert Randolph and John Medeski to form the Word.

In November 2007, Luther Dickinson joined the Black Crowes as lead guitarist and appeared on their albums Warpaint (2008), Before the Frost…Until the Freeze (2009) and Croweologzy (2010).). Cody Dickinson also started a side project, Hill Country Revue, which released two albums, Make a Move (2009) and Zebra Ranch (2010).

Besides their touring with Mavis Staples and Charlie Mussewhite, the Allstars also opened for Robert Plant and the Band of Joy on their concert tour in 2011 and the Dave Matthews Band in the spring of 2013.
Other North Mississippi Allstars album releases include World Boogie Is Coming in 2013, Freedom & Dreams in 2015, Prayer for Peace in 2017 (which reached number one on the Billboard blues album chart) and most recently Up and Rolling in 2020.

With 1+ Million Streams, Multi-Award Nominated Vancouver’s KELLY & GIBSON Share Affinity for Music on Debut EP

0

With their music sitting at well over one+ million plays across platforms, multi-award nominated and MTV-featured Canadian pop artists Kelly & Gibson continue to fête their debut EP, Affinity, as recently announced semi-finalists in the 2020 Unsigned Only Music Competition.

The four-track album’s most recent single, 2020’s “Get This Right,” was the second song the Vancouver-based duo of Chris Kelly and Nicole Gibson penned for the project, and speaks volumes on the album’s thematic muse.

“In general, we were very inspired by relationships for this EP,” they offer. “We wrote ‘Get This Right,’ in particular, after a night spent talking with friends for hours about past relationships we all had, current long-term ones we were in, and what makes relationships work in the long run.”

“This song is about how people come into relationships with scars from past loves and life experiences,” Kelly adds of the track. “It’s about how a big part of relationships are just learning how to coexist with those things in each other.”

“Relationships aren’t a fairytale,” Gibson nods. “They aren’t easy, but the good ones are worth the work and the hard conversations in the long run.

“Getting through those things with someone, and being able to move on, is really what makes the magic happen.”

Nominated as Kelly & Gibson for an Independent Music Award and semi-finalists in the International Songwriting Competition, the pair first met in Montreal while each manning merch tables for their respective self-fronted bands.

Dubbed ‘Gemini pop’ for their ‘two voices that work as fraternal twins mirroring, supporting and splitting from each other,’ the creative connection was near-instant, and it wasn’t long before they began collaborating on covers and original songwriting — as showcased on their burgeoning YouTube channel.

MTV quickly caught notice and rewarded them with a feature; Creative BC’s Amplify program soon followed suit, and provided a foundation for the two to release their breakout EP and video for single, “Chasing Feelings,’ — which was announced this month as an official semi-finalist at the 2020 Unsigned Only Music Competition.

Speaking of the “Chasing Feelings” video, you’d never guess by looking at it that its production orbited just outside of the city’s by-law. “We initially filmed in a public park, and it took us about three hours to set up,” they recall. “But we didn’t have a filming permit.

“We were inspired by ‘chasing the good feelings,’ and just went for it! But we only got one 20-minute shot before the shoot was shut down by the cops.”

Ever resourceful, they literally took it home and completed the shoot in their apartment; the result is a confetti-piñata-bubble-balloon blast of eye-candy set to their signature musical magnetism, and a grade-a example of what keeps audiences coming back for more (and more).

Affinity features “Chasing Feelings,” “Get This Right,” “Why Do We Love Like This” and “World On Fire,” and is available now.

Greatest Hits – One of The Longest Running Albums in UK Top 100 With 900 Weeks On Chart

0

Not content with being the UK’s best-selling album of all time, Queen’s Greatest Hits album has achieved another impressive chart milestone this week.

The retrospective, originally released in 1981, has passed 900 weeks on the Official Albums Chart Top 100 (currently at 901 weeks), making it only the third album to do so.

Queen’s Greatest Hits sits behind Bob Marley & The Wailers’ 1984 hits album Legend on 933 weeks and ABBA’s Gold – the longest-running UK Top 100 album ever – on 949 weeks as the only albums with more than 900 weeks on the chart.

Queen’s Greatest Hits debuted at Number 2 in 1981 and rose to Number 1 the following week, spending four weeks at the summit. View its week-by-week chart run here.

As you might have deduced from its title, the album features Queen’s big hits up to 1980, including chart-topper Bohemian Rhapsody and Top 10s Killer Queen, You’re My Best Friend, Somebody To Love, We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You.

The album has regularly appeared in the Top 100 in recent years and received an added boost in 2018 following the release of the Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. At the time of writing the collection is in the Official Albums Chart Top 20 at Number 16.

The 900-week feat lands around the same time the band celebrate 50 years since their first London gig, on July 18 1970 at Imperial College. Earlier this month Royal Mail released a series of commemorative stamps to mark the occasion.

Gracie and Rachel Announce Hello Weakness, You Make Me Strong – Out September 18th via Righteous Babe Records

0

Today, Gracie and Rachel announce their hotly anticipated sophomore album Hello Weakness, You Make Me Strong, a cathartic near-psychological sonic exploration through the mind that will be released September 18th via Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records. The alchemic pairing of keyboardist-vocalist, Gracie Coates, and violinist, Rachel Ruggles, celebrate today’s announcement with the release of the compelling visual companion to album cut, “Underneath”. The video finds the duo (who FLAUNT call “the epitome of harmonious duality”) stripping away layer upon layer until they are down to their exposed bare essence; each article of clothing representing the superficial narratives that falsely define who we think we’re supposed to be, covering up the core of our existences.

Balancing starkness with ornateness, dark with light, beautiful freedom with crippling fear, and universal clarity with vulnerable specificity, Hello Weakness, You Make Me Strong is a collection forged in the fires of personal growth that rings clearly with an overarching message of empowerment. Over the ten tracks, strings swirl and pop with pizzicato accents, vocals weave together with angelic harmony, and ethereal melodies carry lyrics which read like a poetic exorcism.

Learning to wield your supposed flaws as a tool for triumph is the heart of the album; it’s explored in-depth on tracks like “Ideas” (which NPR spotlighted on a recent episode of All Songs Considered and Atwood Magazine called an “empowering reflection on deconstruction as a means of progress”), “Sidelines” (an ode to taking ownership of and finding pride in your own thoughts), “Undo” (a Socratic reflection on the power of knowing nothing as a way to learn everything), and “Trust” (partially inspired by the #MeToo movement, focused on the process of learning to speak your own language, believe in your instincts, and write your own narrative).

“Making this record was equal parts frustrating and fulfilling,” said Gracie about the creation of the album. “We had to ask each other some tough questions, let go of our egos in the process of answering those questions, and find the ways in which our weaknesses can give us strength. We pushed one another to keep going when we weren’t sure we could, and we tried to stay steadfast in that mission.”

Rachel added that “this record helped us get through our relationship, our counterproductive internal dialogues and our subsequent stunted output, and it truly guided us in these ways to be more open. The record really knows a lot more about communication and perseverance than we do, and for that we’re so grateful.”

The journey from high school juniors assigned to work together on a school project to beloved musical enchantresses who NPR has said, “mix pop and classical in stark, infectious ways” and “make unforgettable, surprising music,” has partially been defined by the chemistry between its two creators: Gracie bringing a free-spirited creativity to her songwriting that juxtaposes with the disciplined classical mindset of Rachel to create truly magical results.
