The COVID-19 pandemic is having an unprecedented impact across the country and around the world, changing the way that people come together. That’s why the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has reimagined its beloved annual Relay For Life into Relay At Home – the organization’s first-ever nationwide online fundraising event with interactive activities, entertainment, time to celebrate survivors and remember those we’ve lost to cancer. Participants of all ages will unite from the comfort of their homes on Saturday, June 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. EST to raise funds in support of groundbreaking research and a national support system that helps people living with cancer and their families.

Those with cancer are among the most vulnerable in our communities right now and are at greater risk of more serious outcomes from COVID-19. During these challenging times, many people facing cancer are experiencing feelings of isolation or stress as treatments are postponed or cancelled. At CCS, we continue to serve the one million Canadians currently living with and beyond cancer and provide ways for people to build community, connection and support.

“The Canadian Cancer Society is facing its biggest financial challenge in our 80-year history due to COVID-19,” said Andrea Seale, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society. “With nearly 1 in 2 Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, we need the support of Canadians now more than ever. Pearl Jam Releases Uncensored Version Of “Jeremy” Video Because Gun Deaths Continue To Increase

Originally released in 1992, the Jeremy video brought attention to gun violence, teen suicide, and violence in schools. The original uncensored video, previously unreleased, is being shown here for essentially the first time. The themes of Jeremy highlighted by Pearl Jam in 1991, have sadly only become more relevant in the intervening 30 years as gun deaths continue to increase.

Maple Blues Awards Going Virtual in 2021

Toronto Blues Society’s annual national awards show the Maple Blues Awards is going virtual on its next edition which will take place on Monday, February 1, 2021. The Board of directors of TBS has been faced with the difficult decision considering the ongoing global pandemic. The Maple Blues Awards nominees will be announced in October, with public voting in eligible categories still taking place during the month of November 2020 and the winners will be announced during the online awards show on February 1, 2021.

Derek Andrews, President of Toronto Blues Society said, “The uncertainty of live music events has forced us to err on the side of caution by celebrating the best in Canada’s blues virtually, with no boundaries worldwide!”

In addition, the tenth biennial Blues Summit conference and showcase was to be held January 29th – February 1st, 2021 but the decision has been made to move the event to January 28th -31st, 2022. Details to follow.

Please make sure to mail and promote your new albums to the MBA Nominating Panel until the end of September. While the panel consists of 62 members who are required to be familiar with Canadian blues artist activity and CD releases, artists are encouraged to service new releases to increase their national profile. The list of the panel members can be found on TBS website with a link to their organizations. Please note, albums should be released during the eligibility period: September 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020.

Now in its 35th year, The Toronto Blues Society is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Blues. The Maple Blues Awards is Canada’s national blues awards program. Its goal is to promote blues music across Canada and to recognize outstanding achievement in the field.

This summer, Eagle Rock Entertainment is delighted to announce the virtual cinema release of Ella Fitzgerald: Just One Of Those Things — the much heralded, critically acclaimed documentary about the one-and-only “First Lady Of Jazz.” Tickets and trailer available now at Eventive.

Originally scheduled to be released this past April in cinemas nationwide, the theatrical run of Just One Of Those Things was cancelled due to COVID-19. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Leslie Woodhead and produced by novelist Reggie Nadelson, Ella Fitzgerald: Just One Of Those Things reveals an intimate history of a beloved icon. Ella Fitzgerald is a cherished American figure: her brilliant singing included unsurpassed scat vocalizations. She covered most of a century, excelling in Swing, Pop, Bebop and redefined the Great American Songbook. Her tenacity allowed her to break barriers and chart a powerful course as a woman of color in the male-dominated music business. She fought for Civil Rights. She earned 13 Grammys, the NAACP Equal Justice Award, and the American Black Achievement Award, among others, and sold over 40 million albums throughout her six-decade career.

Ella Fitzgerald: Just One Of Those Things gives viewers a chance to get to know and understand Ella. Losing her mother at the age of 15, Ella endured life in an abusive reform school before escaping to the streets of Harlem. Penniless and alone during The Great Depression, her fate changed in 1934, after she won one of the first amateur nights at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem. She made a brilliant career even as she suffered racism, poverty, sexism. Ella, as everybody knew her, was the rare female bandleader when she was only nineteen. She worked with Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and Benny Goodman. But like so many professional women, she struggled to reconcile her role as a world-famous performer and her private life. Married to Bebop’s innovative bassist Ray Brown, she didn’t have the time to enjoy a domestic life with him and their son, Ray, Jr. Throughout the documentary, we follow Ella as she endures these conflicts — her trials and her triumphs — gaining a clearer music of this woman, and what fueled her timeless voice.

Angela Davis Added To Lineup Of PRISON PRISM: REFRACTING OUTWARD FROM THE PRISON MUSIC PROJECT June 1-12, 2020 On Righteous Babe Radio

RIGHTEOUS BABE RADIO is broadcasting PRISON PRISM, REFRACTING OUTWARD FROM THE PRISON MUSIC PROJECT, a radio festival dedicated to discussions about our criminal justice system currently airing through June 12, 2020. We are hearing from incarcerated poets and lyricists offering their songs and stories and from some of the artists who helped bring those stories to life as part of the artist collective that created the album, Long Time Gone (out on June 5). Noted activist and author Angela Davis has been added to the extensive programming lineup. Her interview will begin airing on June 4 at 7:30pm CT and will repeat until June 12.  About the album, Davis remarked, “[Long Time Gone] is really powerful and it needs to circulate more.”

For a look into the history of incarceration in America, PRISON PRISM features the cultural lens of folk-singer Woody Guthrie through a prison-themed episode of Righteous Babe Radio’s Woody’s Voice and the field recordings of folklorist Alan Lomax in an episode of the podcast Been All Around this World titled ““Making it Hell,” Parchman Farm, 1933-1969.”

We are hearing Incarceration in a Crisis, a virtual town hall led by Bernie Sanders, discussing the realities of the American prison system in the current age of COVID-19.  We are highlighting an alternative methodology to our current system, known as Restorative Justice, by hearing from survivors, perpetrators, and public figures such as Davis and Howard Zehr about their experiences with it. The Prison Prism will also provide a platform for organizations that sponsor arts and education programs in prisons today.  It is this type of organization that made THE PRISON MUSIC PROJECT and its long-awaited album Long Time Gone possible.

Long Time Gone from THE PRISON MUSIC PROJECT is a musical collaboration between free artists and incarcerated or formerly incarcerated writers. All profits of the album sales will go to the Southern Center for Human Rights, an organization that strives for equality, dignity and justice for people impacted by the criminal legal system and fights for a world free from mass incarceration, the death penalty, the criminalization of poverty and racial injustice.

On June 12 the radio festival will culminate in a virtual performance, PRISON MUSIC PROJECT SESSIONS: LONG TIME GONE ALBUM RELEASE CONCERT featuring Ani DiFranco, Zoe Boekbinder, Terence Higgins, free feral, Launa Reed and more.  Presented by Live from Out There, LONG TIME GONE will stream via LiveXLive.com at 8PM CT on Friday, June 12th. Profits from this event will benefit Sister Hearts Re-Entry Program in New Orleans and The Center for Life Without Parole Studies.
