T Bone Burnett: Perfection Is Second-Rate

0

T Bone Burnett helped launch the careers of Los Lobos, Counting Crows, Gillian Welch; revive the careers of Roy Orbison and Robert Plant; course-correct Elvis Costello’s career in the mid-eighties and just recently produced a beautiful record by Sara Bareilles. Of course, there’s all of his film work as well. But while visiting Rick Rubin, himself a legendary producer and co-host of Broken Record, T Bone said he has stopped producing other artists. Instead he’s focusing on releasing his own music. “Invisible Light: Acoustic Space” an electronic infused song cycle was just released. T Bone says he has three double records ready to come out behind it. In this episode of Broken Record, from Shangri La Studios in Malibu, T Bone Burnett premiers two brand new songs on his acoustic guitar, talks about his pivot towards songwriting and chats about his famed career.

“Invisible Light: Acoustic Space” is available now wherever you get your music.

Calgary’s National Music Centre launches Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Bass Exhibit at Studio Bell on May 26

0

The National Music Centre is pleased to announce Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Bass Exhibit at Studio Bell, highlighting a selection of rare and iconic bass guitars from one of rock’s most revered players.
Best known as the formidable frontman of Canadian rock band Rush, Lee has spent years collecting hundreds of vintage bass guitars—a passion which became the inspiration for Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Book of Bass. To celebrate the release of his new book, NMC is launching a feature exhibition at Studio Bell that will coincide with Lee’s cross-Canada book tour. For a full list of book tour dates, go here. NMC will host an exclusive event with Geddy Lee that includes a special Q&A followed by a book signing on May 25 with exhibit opening to the public on May 26. Stay tuned for details on how to purchase May 25 event tickets.

Following the Geddy Lee Bass Exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Studio Bell is hosting the first Canadian exhibit of the artist’s bass guitars, with 26 instruments curated by Lee himself.

“The instruments featured at Studio Bell are a combination of rare vintage basses from the Golden Age of guitar production, as well as significant ones that I’ve used throughout my career. Basses that I’ve scoured the world to get my hands on,” said Geddy Lee. “This exhibition gives people a look into the origins and the earliest years of the instrument that helped shape popular music, and the ones that I’ve lovingly held in my hands for over 40 years as I developed a sound that I could call my own. It’s the largest display of basses from my personal collection ever and I’m excited to share this with my fans in Canada.”

Visitors will get an up-close look at some of Lee’s guitars from his four decades with Rush, as well as a selection of his historically significant and beautifully crafted collectors’ items. Exhibition highlights include Lee’s iconic Rickenbacker 4001, which appeared on numerous Rush recordings from the ‘70s and ‘80s; his signature 1972 Fender Jazz bass, heard on “Tom Sawyer” and many of Rush’s more recent recordings; a 1952 Fender Precision bass, an early example of the world’s first mass-produced electric bass; a 1961 Höfner “Cavern” bass, identical to Paul McCartney’s signature instrument used during the Beatles’ early days in Liverpool; and so many more rare and eccentric instruments from around the world.

“The National Music Centre is really excited to host this exclusive exhibition in celebration of Canada’s own bass icon, Geddy Lee,” said Andrew Mosker, NMC’s President and CEO. “This exhibition is a lesson on the beauty of the bass through the eyes of one of its greatest players, and this collaboration reinforces NMC as Canada’s emerging home for music.”

Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Bass Exhibit is accessible with paid admission to Studio Bell, and will run from May 26, 2019 to January 2, 2020. Studio Bell will be open seven days a week from May 20 until September 2 and is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Regular admission to Studio Bell is $18 for adults, $14 for students/seniors, $11 for children (3-12 years of age), and free for children under 3 years of age.

Peter Frampton Band’s ‘All Blues’ Due For Release June 7

0

All Blues, the forthcoming covers album from the Peter FramptonBand, is set for release on June 7. The album is a collection of Frampton’s favorite blues classics and was recorded with his longtime touring band, made up of Adam Lester (guitar/vocals), Rob Arthur (keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Dan Wojciechowski (drums).

All Blues was recorded at Frampton’s studio in Nashville, Studio Phenix, and was co-produced by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay. The album features additional collaborations with Larry CarltonSonny Landreth and Steve Morse.

The vinyl will be available as a double LP and also as a limited edition translucent blue color pressing exclusively at PeterFrampton.com. The double LP will include the bonus track “I Feel So Good,” which was written by Big Bill Broonzy and popularized by Muddy Waters.

Of the album, Frampton explains, “I have always loved to play the blues. When we formed Humble Pie, the first material we played together was just that. For the last two summers I had been playing a handful of blues numbers every night on stage with Steve Miller Band. I enjoyed this immensely and it gave me the idea of doing an ‘All Blues’ album live in the studio with my band. We started the resulting sessions 9 days after coming off the road last year. Over a two-week period, we recorded 23 tracks, all live in the studio. The energy of these tracks is completely different from building a track one instrument at a time. With this recording, we pay tribute to all the original artists who invented this incredible music. I hope you can hear and feel our enjoyment. I’m not sure if you can say we had fun playing the blues. But we definitely did.”

To support All Blues, Frampton will be hosting a new six-week series on SiriusXM’s Deep Tracks channel. “The Peter Frampton Show” will premiere on Friday, May 10 at 10:00am ET on SiriusXM radios (channel 27) and on the SiriusXM app. Additionally, Frampton will walk SiriusXM listeners through each song from the new album in an exclusive track-by-track on SiriusXM’s BB King’s Bluesville channel. “Peter Frampton’s All Blues Show” will air on Monday, June 3 at 3:00pm ET on SiriusXM radios (channel 74) and on the SiriusXM app.

In conjunction with the album’s release, Frampton will kick off Peter Frampton Finale—The Farewell Tour presented by SiriusXM—an approximately 50-date run this summer and fall produced by Live Nation. Frampton will retire from regular vigorous touring at the end of this year due to his diagnosis of the autoimmune disease Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM). IBM is a progressive muscle disorder characterized by muscle inflammation, weakness and atrophy.

The tour will feature special guest Jason Bonham‘s Led Zeppelin Evening, as well as Julian Frampton on the west coast stops, with additional surprise guests to appear on select dates. Tickets are on sale now and VIP packages will also be available at www.frampton.com$1 of every ticket sold, as well as any donations, will benefit The Peter Frampton Myositis Research Fund at Johns Hopkins, a newly established fund by Frampton and Johns Hopkins, where he’s being treated.

Peter Frampton remains one of the most lauded artists in rock history. On May 7, the Music Business Association will present him with the Chairman’s Award for Sustained Creative Achievement at the Awards & Hall of Fame Dinner that is part of the Association’s annual conference—Music Biz 2019—set to take place May 5-8 in Nashville. Frampton was also recently honored with the Les Paul Innovation Award at the 2019 NAMM Show’s 34th annual TEC Awards, and celebrated the 43rd anniversary of his fifth solo album, Frampton Comes Alive!, one of the top-selling live records of all time (over 17 million copies sold worldwide).

Sting Announces Las Vegas Residency At The Colosseum At Caesars Palace for 2020

0

The Cherrytree Music Company, Live Nation and Caesars Entertainment announce that 17-time GRAMMY Award winning musician Sting will headline a Las Vegas residency, “My Songs,” set to open at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Friday, May 22, 2020.

The show will present a compendium of Sting’s songs with dynamic, visual references to some of his most iconic videos and inspirations.

General ticket prices begin at $59, and a limited number of VIP meet & greet packages are also available for each show. All tickets and packages can be purchased online here or in-person at The Colosseum box office. All shows begin at 8 p.m.

The 16 performances going on sale are:

May 2020: 22, 23, 27, 29, 30
June 2020: 3, 5, 6
Aug. 2020: 15, 19, 21, 22, 26, 28, 29
Sept. 2020: 2

Composer, singer-songwriter, actor, author, and activist Sting was born in Newcastle, England before moving to London in 1977 to form The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five studio albums, earned six GRAMMY Awards and two Brits, and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

As one of the world’s most distinctive solo artists, Sting has received an additional 11 GRAMMY Awards, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, four Oscar nominations (including 2017’s nomination for “The Empty Chair” from JIM: THE JAMES FOLEY STORY), a TONY nomination, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year. Also a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he has received the Kennedy Center Honors, The American Music Award of Merit and The Polar Music Prize. Sting has been awarded Honorary Doctorates of Music by the University of Northumbria (1992), Berklee College of Music (1994), University of Newcastle upon Tyne (2006) and Brown University at its 250th Commencement ceremony (2018).

Throughout his illustrious career, Sting has sold close to 100 million albums from his combined work with The Police and as a solo artist.

Following his critically-acclaimed album, 57th & 9th, his first rock/pop collection in over a decade, Sting and reggae star, Shaggy released a collaborative, island-influenced album, entitled 44/876, that draws from the many surprising connections at the heart of their music. With its title referencing their home country codes, 44/876 first and foremost honors the duo’s mutual love for Jamaica: Shaggy’s homeland, and the place where Sting penned such classics as The Police’s “Every Breath You Take.” Their chart-topping release debuted at #1 in Germany and Top 10 in the UK. It has spent over 20 weeks atop Billboard’s Reggae Album chart in the US, earned Gold certifications in Poland and France and most recently received the GRAMMY Award for Best Reggae Album.

Following their critically-acclaimed world tour, the iconic duo, both managed by The Cherrytree Music Company, will bring their 44/876 Tour to the UK from May 19 – 25 for a series of intimate and exclusive concerts, hailed “a reggae rock dance party that never lets up.”

On May 24, a new album entitled Sting: My Songs, featuring contemporary interpretations of his most celebrated hits, will be released and followed by a European summer tour of the same name. Sting’s ‘My Songs’ tour will consist of a rollicking, dynamic show featuring his most beloved songs spanning the 17-time GRAMMY Award winner’s prolific career with The Police and as a solo artist.

He has appeared in more than 15 films, executive produced the critically acclaimed A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, and in 1989 starred in The Threepenny Opera on Broadway. His most recent theatre project was the TONY-nominated musical The Last Ship, inspired by his memories of the shipbuilding community of Wallsend in the North East of England where he was born and raised. The show, with music and lyrics by Sting, ran on Broadway in 2014/2015 and completed a critically-acclaimed UK regional theatre tour which ran from March-July 2018. Most recently, Sting starred as shipyard foreman Jackie White in the Toronto-based production of The Last Ship at the Princess of Wales Theatre. He will reprise the role for productions in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre (January 14 – February 16, 2020) and in San Francisco at the SHN Golden Gate Theatre (February 20 – March 22, 2020).

Sting’s support for human rights organizations such as the Rainforest Fund, Amnesty International, and Live Aid mirrors his art in its universal outreach. Along with wife Trudie Styler, Sting founded the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect both the world’s rainforests and the indigenous people living there. Together they have held 18 benefit concerts to raise funds and awareness for our planet’s endangered resources. Since its inception, the Rainforest Fund has expanded to a network of interconnected organizations working in more than 20 countries over three continents.

Bob Marley’s Legend Turns 35 With Special 2LP 180-Gram Vinyl Reissue On June 14

0

On June 14, The Marley Family will celebrate the 35th anniversary of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend with a double 180-gram vinyl reissue. Initially released on May 8, 1984, Legend holds the distinction of being the world’s best-selling reggae album of all time with over 15 million copies sold in the United States alone, and over 28 million worldwide. A greatest hits compilation for the ages, Legend is the soundtrack to the remarkable life and recording career of one of reggae music’s most important and influential figures. This iconic collection not only serves as the perfect introduction to the music of Bob Marley, it has also become an essential element of every reggae fan’s permanent collection.

This vinyl-only 35th anniversary reissue comprises the original “BMW1” version of Legend with the addition of two original U.K.-only cassette bonus tracks (“Easy Skanking” and “Punky Reggae Party”). Taken as a whole, the 16 songs that comprise Legend have literally defined a genre. Among the album’s instantly recognizable tracks are “Get Up Stand Up,” “One Love / People Get Ready,” “I Shot The Sheriff,” “Three Little Birds,” “Jammin,” and “Exodus.” Other Legend anthems like “No Woman No Cry” and “Is This Love” feature backing vocals from The I Threes, an all-female trio comprised of Marley’s wife Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths. Mrs. Rita Marley’s own career retrospective, quite aptly dubbed Lioness of Reggae, is being released on limited-edition vinyl by Tuff Gong Worldwide on May 3.

A new visual for “Satisfy My Soul” was recently shot by Pantera as directed by Brian Kazez and produced by Propaganda Films, serving as a conceptual interpretation of the song to show what it means to “feel alright” in Jamaica. This also happens to be the same directorial team that shot a new clip for “Easy Skanking,” which was filmed in Kingston and garnered much acclaim earlier this year for the way it shared an authentic look at a day in the life of Jamaica and the indefatigable, uprising spirit of the people who live, love, and work there the whole year round.

To this day, Bob Marley remains one of popular culture’s most important and influential entertainment icons. His lifestyle and music continue to inspire new generations around the world. Marley was the first Jamaican artist to give voice to the struggles of his people and introduce Rastafarian culture to the world at large, and his expansive music catalog has sold millions of albums all across the globe.

Bob Marley’s legacy truly lives on in the artists and generations he has influenced. Today, the spiritual, political, and musical resonance of the man’s work continues to be felt around the world, and Legend is the one true collection that cements his perpetual global legacy.

The O’Jays Take On The Trump Administration And Social Injustice On New Studio Album ‘The Last Word’

Multi-platinum selling Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The O’Jays (Eddie Levert Sr., Walter Williams Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant), take on the Trump administration and social injustice with a message of love on their new album, The Last Word, released across all streaming platforms via S-CURVE RECORDS/BMG. The Last Word is the group’s final studio album and their first in almost 20 years

With a remarkable career that has spanned 60-years and included hits like “Love Train,” “For the Love of Money,” “Use ta Be My Girl,” “Back Stabbers,” and many more, The O’Jays are an indelible part of pop culture. With the release of The Last Word the group is showing that they have not lost a beat, emoting the same hunger and vocal craftsmanship they have become known for while delivering socially conscious message music that makes you think while you dance.

The Last Word was produced by the Grammy nominated producers Steve Greenberg, Mike Mangini and R&B legend Betty Wright (the trio behind Joss Stone’s “Soul Sessions”), along with the songwriter and rock/pop mastermind Sam Hollander (Panic! at the Disco, Weezer, Neon Trees). The album includes standout tracks such as “Above the Law,” “Stand Up (Show Love),” and the Bruno Mars and Patrick Monahan penned “Enjoy Yourself.”

“I look at what is going on in the world and not much seems to have changed from when we first started doing this,” said Eddie Levert. “We are still dealing with the same issues. On this album we addressed those issues as well as the intolerance we see coming out of the Trump Administration on a daily basis. We also offer a solution. That solution is to combat hatred with love and acceptance.”

“I want to believe things will eventually change but we have a long way to go,” said Walter Williams. “With this final album we are providing a soundtrack for those that are speaking truth to power and encouraging people to come together through love.”

The 9-track album provides a critical look at the precarious state of social and criminal justice in America. As elder statesmen, the group has experienced much throughout their lives, from the civil rights movement to rising economic inequality and the erosion of democratic norms. On this album they are sharing their perspective on the state of the country as well as the world; offering up some words of wisdom for the next generation before exiting the stage.

The O’Jays remain one of today’s seminal music acts. The group scored their first number 1 in 1972 with “Backstabbers.” Subsequently, they had other various chart-topping pop and R&B singles including “Love Train”, “Put Your Hands Together”, “For The Love of Money”, “I Love Music”, “Darlin’ Darlin’ Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love)”, “Livin’ For The Weekend” and “Use Ta Be My Girl.” This success propelled The O’Jays to be the first black vocal group to perform in arenas throughout America during the 70s and 80s.

Eddie Levert Sr. and Walter Williams Sr. as well as Eric Nolan Grant, who joined the group in 1995, continue to thrill fans today. Throughout their career The O’Jays have achieved 10 Gold albums, 9 Platinum albums and 10 #1 hits.

The O’Jays were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005 and honored with BET’s Life Time Achievement Award in 2009. In 2013, they were inducted into The Official R&B Music Hall of Fame.
