That Time The Teacher From “Welcome Back, Kotter” Released A Single
Remember the sitcom, Welcome Back Kotter? That show about a teacher and his “gifted” group of students (and starred a young John Travolta). In the sitcom, real-life comedian Gabe Kaplan played Gabe Kotter, who returns as a teacher to the dysfunctional high school where he had been a student. The series ran from 1975–79, and Kaplan bought a home in Palm Springs, California with his earnings. “Up your nose with a rubber hose!”, sanitized from the original album line “Up your hole with a Mello-Roll!”, became an unlikely catchphrase from the show. It became so popular that a comedy record by Kaplan, Up Your Nose, was released by Elektra Records. The record, co-written and -produced by Kaplan, dented the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1977, peaking at #93.
Scott Helman’s Got Some “Hang Ups”, But That’s OK, It’s Just His New Single
Warner Music Canada recording artist Scott Helman returned to the studio earlier this Fall and emerged with three brand new tracks led by the effervescent single “Hang Ups.” The release of the single comes just a few days before Scott heads overseas to join the European leg of Vance Joy’s The Nation Of Two tour.
“Hang Ups” along with the song “Dostoevsky” were recorded earlier this Fall with producer Thomas “Tawgs” Salter who also produced Scott’s debut EP Augusta and fell-length album Hôtel De Ville. The third song, “Lifeguard” was produced by Brian Howes and Jason Van Poederooyen (Mother Mother, Simple Plan, Hinder). All three songs are available to stream or download HERE.
“‘Hang Ups’ was inspired by a FaceTime with my girlfriend which ended in a big fight,” Scott recalls. “Afterwards, I had an intense moment of anxiety, hoping I didn’t do too much damage. As someone with ADHD, I usually have 800 things going on in my brain at once. With the song, wanted to paint a picture of the feeling after a conversation where everything comes out wrong.”
Earlier this past summer, Scott Helman joined Vance Joy on five Canadian tour dates. The acts hit it off so well that before the final date, Vance had asked Scott to join him in Europe this fall. Immediately following the Vance Joy European tour, Scott returns to North America for a headlining club tour in the United States. Full itinerary below.

Canada’s Walk of Fame Announces 2018 Allan Slaight Honour Recipient Goes To…Jessie Reyez
Canada’s Walk of Fame announced today that Jessie Reyez will receive its 2018 Allan Slaight Honour. The Honour recognizes young Canadians who are turning their musical talent into inspiration and are having a positive impact on the music industry. Reyez began writing her own music in high school and saw her 2016 single “Figures” hit the Canadian Hot 100 in 2017. She won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2018 and has received multiple other award nominations. Reyez will accept the honour at THE 2018 CANADA’S WALK OF FAME AWARDS show on December 1 in Toronto. The show is set to air on CTV in December.
“Jessie is such a great example of the spirit of the Allan Slaight Honour,” said Jeffrey Latimer, CEO of Canada’s Walk of Fame. “Her music, work ethic, success and unlimited potential for the future show other young Canadian musicians what is possible!”
“I’m really honoured to be recognized. These past few years have been a dream, and to be honest, my team and I have made it a point to continue to work hard and not lose momentum; however, because of this decision, we rarely get moments to reflect and enjoy the blessings that music has provided,” said Jessie. “That being said, I’m very grateful for receiving this recognition, especially at home, and for getting this moment to pause and reflect and be thankful. In Toronto, I’ve had so many people positively influence me in our music community, so to be a recipient for something that celebrates positive influence and inspiration is an honour. Thank you.”

In its 20th year, the organization is deepening its commitment and broadening its impact across Canada with new initiatives including Hometown Stars, presented by Cineplex (where Inductees receive stars in Toronto and in their hometowns), and expanded existing programs like the RBC Emerging Musician Program in order to mean more to more people more often.
