Electric Blues Icon Howlin’ Wolf’s Legendary 1959 Debut LP ‘Moanin’ In The Moonlight’ Reissued On Vinyl Ahead Of 60th Anniversary

0

Chester Arthur Burnett, better known to blues fans as Howlin’ Wolf, remains one of the essential exponents of the electric blues. With a raw, booming voice and explosive guitar and harmonica styles to match, the Mississippi-bred Wolf made music that was unmatched in its primal ferocity. In the process, he helped to put Chess Records on the map as America’s preeminent blues label.

Now, just in time for the 60th anniversary of Moanin’ In The Moonlight’s original release, Geffen/UMe has released a special vinyl edition of the original mono album. Remastered from the original flat master tape, this new edition features a high quality 150-gram black vinyl pressing housed in a printed sleeve with scans of the analog tape box and comes in a distinctive tip-on jacket reproducing the album’s distinctive original cover art. A perfect tribute to Howlin’ Wolf’s originality and influence, this anniversary edition of Moanin’ In The Moonlight is available now.

Howlin’ Wolf performed throughout the South in the 1930s and 1940s, having reportedly learned to play guitar and harmonica from legendary bluesman Charlie Patton and Sonny Boy Williamson, respectively. He was discovered in the early 1950s by future Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, who recorded Wolf’s early sides, some of which he licensed to Chess. Wolf eventually relocated to Chicago and began recording for Chess directly.

Like many LPs of the period, Moanin’ In The Moonlight includes tracks stretching back several years, including a trio of numbers—”Moanin’ at Midnight,” “How Many More Years” and “All Night Boogie”—recorded in Memphis in the early ’50s with Sam Phillips. The album’s nine remaining songs were recorded after Wolf’s move to Chicago and produced either by label owners Leonard and Phil Chess, or by staff musician/songwriter Willie Dixon. Moanin’ In The Moonlight features four songs that had been hits on Billboard’s national R&B charts: “Moanin’ at Midnight”, “How Many More Years,” “Smokestack Lightning” and “I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline).”

In the years since his passing in 1976, Howlin’ Wolf has been widely recognized for his musical achievements. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. In 2011, Rolling Stone ranked him number 54 on its list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” Meanwhile, the Howlin’ Wolf Foundation continues to preserve and extend the artist’s legacy.

Moanin’ In The Moonlight continues to be singled out for individual praise. In 1987, the album received a prestigious W.C. Handy Award under the category of “Vintage/Reissue Album (US).” Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album as #153 on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. And seminal rock critic Robert Palmer cited “How Many More Years” as the first record to feature a distorted power chord.

Although Howlin’ Wolf would continue to release new albums for the next decade and a half, it’s widely agreed that Moanin’ In The Moonlight is the definitive document of his remarkable talent. Now it can be heard once again, in all of its original vinyl glory.

The History of Music According to Spike Jones

0

In this 1952 episode of the television show Four Star Revue, legendary musician Spike Jones and his talented orchestra, offered a hilarious history of music. Not all of it is going to accurate, mmkay?

YouTube commetner garnerjazz58 gives a bit more insight to the sketch.

These routines are filled with musical references that few in today’s audiences would understand. There was an adage that “you don’t chew gum in the orchestra” that was widely known of in popular culture. The upturned trombone bell is no doubt a reference to Dizzy Gillespie’s trumpet. The giant portrait of Spike behind the band comes from Paul Whiteman, who used a similarly placed caricature of himself with his band. References to “all girl bands”, players opening their case and blowing the dust off their instrument (they never practice…), a harpist knitting during a piece (they count a lot of rests and of course the harp isn’t utilized in most pieces of symphonic repertoire..). The tuba which expels bubbles (ala Lawrence Welk), and many more. And Spike calmly presiding over all of the bedlam, chewing away on a stick of Beeman’s. Among his sidemen for this NBC TV series: George Rock, trumpet; Mickey Katz, clarinet; Tommy Pederson, trombone.

This Punk Band is Made Up Entirely of Robots

The One Love Machine band are a scrappy crew. They have an affinity for punk rock, and members of the band play the bass, drums and flute. Oh, and they’re all robots. The band is made up of scrap metal animatronics, created from salvaged junk from scrapyards around Berlin. For creator of the band Kolja Kugler, it’s all about giving new life to discarded objects.

Canadian indie folk and roots singer/songwriter John Muirhead knows a thing or two about trying to get some shut-eye while on the road.

Canadian indie folk and roots singer/songwriter John Muirhead knows a thing or two about trying to get some shut-eye while on the road.

The London, Ontario-based artist has been touring nearly non-stop for the better part of the last two years, and his new single and video — available today — is John’s appreciative, candid, and behind-the-scenes perspective on life as an indie musician.

Two years of ambitious cross-Canada touring can produce a great many things: irreplaceable memories, life-altering experiences, unexpected challenges, a bit of self-discovery, and — for John — a new single.

Penned during moments of downtime between northern Ontario folk festivals all the way to speeding VIA Rail trains through the maritimes, the new track “I Can Sleep Anywhere” — available now — is Muirhead’s appreciative, eyes-wide-open ode to roughing it on the road as an indie music man. He recently stopped by CBC’s London Morning, Afternoon Drive, Up North, and London’s CHRW to talk all about it.

“It’s about the call to adventure, and playing your heart out even if the room is empty,” explains the self-described troubadour. “It’s is a reminder that every show — whether it’s on a moving train, a folk festival, a theatre or someone’s living room — could be my last, and that I truly love music, regardless of the ups and downs I face.”

Not that the talented songster should have much to worry about on that front; widely known for his storytelling songs that kindle late-night Canadian campfires, Muirhead’s distinct brand of indie folk has seen him nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award, and an honourable mention in the Canadian Songwriting Competition.

From fingerpicked folk confessionals to upbeat roots-rock jams inspired by the likes of Frank Turner, Neil Young, The Weakerthans, and Julien Baker, Muirhead’s eclectic song collections across two EPs, Yesterday’s Smile and Foundational, reflect the highs and lows of love, ambition, and being a young musician.

The video for “I Can Sleep Anywhere” serves as much of a scrapbook as the lyrics; put together from a collection of Muirhead’s own iPhone videos spanning the last 24 months, it’s meant to reflect the joys and adventure that inspired the lyrics of the song. “I had no intention of putting these into a music video while I was filming but, when I finally had time to look through my old footage, I knew I needed to compile it all together.

“This was the perfect song for that.”

“I Can Sleep Anywhere” was produced by David Worthen and recorded at Vapor in Toronto. “We recorded it in a couple of sessions at the end of the summer, featuring Alex Lam on drums and Sam Fitzpatrick on bass,” Muirhead shares. “It was such a fun experience, we really tried to keep the energy of the track alive and I think we accomplished that.”

“I Can Sleep Anywhere” is available now.
