Neon Dreams to Perform at Benefit in Support of Toronto Rape Crisis Centre and Multicultural Women Against Rape

0

Youth Rising Above (YRA) and the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women Against Rape (TRCC/MCWAR) are collaborating to influence positive change through music  to support programs targeted at youth (aged 16-24) with the aim of preventing sexual assault, misconduct and / or violence against women through an elevated awareness and understanding of consent.

The catalyst for the fundraiser is Neon Dreams, a group that swiftly and courageously abandoned the North American Cageless Tour, as the opening act for Hedley, after allegations were released that members of the band were involved in acts of sexual assault.  As part of this response, Neon Dreams will be performing an acoustic set and are generously donating $1,000 to the TRCC/MWAR to initiate the fundraising efforts and help the organizations reach their fundraising goal of $5,000.

The event’s headliner will be Toronto native RALPH. With an emphasis on lyrics and storytelling, pulling from her personal life experiences, RALPH’s songs are honest and relatable. Other artists who are passionately raising their voices for this cause are Jillea and The Command Sisters.  These talented Canadian artists will be generously donating their time and talents to the cause by performing 25-minute acoustic sets to a crowd filled room in the West-end of Toronto.

The fundraiser will take place at the historic Gladstone Hotel, on September 9th beginning at 6:30 PM. The Gladstone Hotel is a fitting venue for this fundraiser and awareness campaign due to their long history of advocacy for inclusivity and feminism as well as being leaders in social impact.

The event will be hosted by YRA in support of the TRCC/MWAR. A brief overview of the prevention program and how these organizations support victims of sexual assault will be provided at the event.

Tickets can be purchased for $30 here:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/raise-your-voice-influencing-positive-change-through-music-tickets-49159859463

7th Annual Amy Louie / Grossman’s Music Scholarship Fundraiser Announces Line-Up

Indie Artists Interested In Scholarship Opportunities : Submission Details

The Amy Louie / Grossman’s Music Scholarship continues to accept submissions ahead of its annual ALGMS Fundraiser at Grossman’s Tavern this September 25th. The submission window closes September 14th.

The ALGMS is an artist development bursary created in honour of the late Amy Louie, whose family has been a mainstay in the local music community and owned Grossman’s Tavern since 1975.

Since the scholarship’s inception in 2013, it has grown to a disbursement of $2,000. The prize is awarded annually to a group or individual artist from the Greater Toronto Area whose winning project proposal demonstrates how the bursary would advance their music career.

Early line-up details for what will be the organization’s seventh annual event have been announced, and include performances by The Happy Pals, Frankie Foo, The Swinging Blackjacks, Bill Hedefine, Terry Wilkins, Robbie Antone, Russell Williams, Gary Kendall, Donnie Walsh, Paul Reddick, Steve Marriner, Danny Marks, Alec Fraser, Eric Schenkman, Leonardo Valvassori, Vince Maccarone — plus previous ALGMS winners Dan McKinnon (2017), Chloe Watkinson (2015), and Jerome Godboo (2014).

One of the longest-running live music venues and a stalwart within Toronto’s vibrant and dynamic music scene, Grossman’s has long been considered an incubator for an impressive cast of local artists who got their start inside the Tavern — including but not limited to the late Jeff Healey, the Downchild Blues Band, and Rough Trade.

Submissions for the 2018 Amy Louie / Grossman’s Music Scholarship will be considered until September 14, 2018. Full details can be found here, and entrants can forward their proposals to algms@grossmantavern.com. The recipient will be chosen by a panel of music industry professionals, and receive half of the bursary at the beginning of their project and the second half upon completion.

“The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society” Box Set Announced

0

A 50th anniversary edition of the Kinks’ 1968 album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society is on the way. It’s due out October 26 via BMG.

Somewhat overlooked upon its release in November 1968, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society is now seen as one of the best British albums ever recorded. Created in difficult circumstances by a band who refused to follow fashion, it is an album of timeless, perfectly crafted songs about growing up and growing old, and the decline of national culture and traditional ways. Enduring and unsurpassed, with its wit, sadness, quiet anger, regret and charm, it is generally considered the high point of The Kinks’ outstanding career and Ray Davies’ masterpiece.

A calm, nostalgic album which feels like a sweet, hazy dream but with endless layers of musical and lyrical innovation, The Village Green Preservation Society’s defiantly British sensibilities became the foundation of generations of British guitar pop.

The Art Of The Album focuses specifically on high quality, bespoke packaged re-issues of seminal albums within the BMG catalogue. Each title will stay true to the original album release but will offer the best quality audio masters and high spec original artwork and packaging. Through extensive sleeve notes, interviews, photography and specially created online & press content each title will focus on “telling the story” of the album’s production, release and cultural impact. Additional materials include interviews, photography, and essays by the Who’s Pete Townshend and others. Below, check out the previously unreleased track “Time Song.”

The set is beautifully packaged in rigid card box with debossed cover, gold foil & metallic text, wrapped in special linen cloth finish with 174 audio tracks total, 3 previously unreleased tracks, and 55 previously unreleased versions.

Lowest Of The Low’s “Shakespeare My Box!!” Available November 21, 2018

0

Lowest Of The Low have announced the release of their massive box set, Shakespeare My Box!!. The band’s career retrospective will launch on November 21, 2018 exclusively through the band’s website.

Shakespeare My Box!! is a veritable treasure trove for fans that includes all four of the Lowest Of The Low albums on vinyl (a first for Hallucigencia and Sordid Fiction) and a fifth album of unreleased tracks, rarities and outtakes called Thrifty Thrifty Thrifty. The box also includes a 24-page full colour book, handwritten lyrics, a poster and stickers.

To celebrate the release of Shakespeare My Box!!, the band is playing two sets at the Dakota in Toronto on November 21. To ensure an unforgettable evening shared with super fans, only those who buy the box set will have access to the $25 Dakota tickets (1 pair per box). Concert goers will also have a chance to win specialty prizes at the shows.

Lowest Of The Low emerged from the ashes of Toronto’s 1980’s punk rock scene with founders Ron Hawkins and David Alexander surviving many sweaty nights sharing stages and rubbing elbows with the scene’s hoi polloi as Social Insecurity. By the early 90’s Lowest Of The Low were playing legendary shows, performing socially-conscious folk-rock assembled from character sketches and journal entries in Ron’s ever-present notebook as he wandered the streets of Toronto.

Their 1991 debut, Shakespeare My Butt…, found its audience and quickly became a best seller flying off the indie shelves at local record stores. The success brought industry recognition that the band turned its back on, rejecting lucrative offers, including support slots on major tours with Bryan Adams, Blue Rodeo and Barenaked Ladies. The band clung to their independence and took their show on the road, shaking the foundations of bars, nightclubs and university pubs, building an unforgivingly loyal following.

In 1994 they released Hallucigenia but a tough recording process followed by a grueling tour pace tore the band apart and in the Autumn of ’94 the band shut it down so quickly that fans never had a chance to say goodbye. The band re-emerged in 2001 playing several reunion shows and releasing the live/studio hybrid Nothing Short Of A Bullet. Sordid Fiction, their third full studio album came out in 2004. Their latest album, Do The Right Now was released in 2017.

Lowest Of The Low were inducted into the Canadian Indie Music Hall of Fame in 2008; Shakespeare My Butt… was thrice voted Top 10 Canadian of All Time by the readers of Chart Magazine while Ron Hawkins has twice been named NOW Magazine’s Songwriter of the Year – not that any of that stuff is important to them.

David Bowie’s “Heroes” Performed By A Ukulele Orchestra

0

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, using instruments bought with loose change, which believes that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the Ukulele.

On April 5, 2018 at Le Poisson Rouge, NYC, the Orchestra livestreamed an exclusive concert to promote their upcoming US tour. This version of ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie is taken from that live show, revealing an unsuspected musical insight into the classic song.

Spotify’s EQL Studio Residency Will Open Door for Female Producers, Engineers

0

In partnership with Berklee College of Music and Electric Lady Studios, Spotify is announcing its EQL Studio Residency, which will help open the door for emerging female producers and engineers while shining a light on the great work already being done by women in the music industry.

Starting in October, the program will offer residencies in three cities: New York, Nashville, and London. During these paid, six-month residencies, one participant in each city will work in studios and gain access to invaluable networking and mentoring opportunities to further her career.

In New York, the resident will split her time between the famed Electric Lady Studios and Spotify Studios. In Nashville and London, residents will work out of the Spotify Secret Genius Studios, where Spotify has shown its commitment to supporting emerging songwriters and producers.

“Women are underrepresented as artists, songwriters, engineers, and producers,” says Kerry Steib, director of cultural impact at Spotify. “We have to use our resources to create opportunities to address this, and do it with great partners across the industry. This is just the beginning.”

“This exciting collaboration recognizes the many contributions women make in the music industry,” says Darla Hanley, dean of the Professional Education Division at Berklee. “We are happy to support and mentor the recipients of the EQL Studio Residency and look forward to sharing our expertise and many decades of combined experience across all corners of the industry with them.”

“Electric Lady is thrilled to partner with Spotify’s EQL Studio Residency alongside Berklee College of Music in encouragement of more women in audio production,” says Lee Foster, partner/general manager Electric Lady Studios. “We are strong supporters of this movement and look forward to meeting the next generation of women engineers and producers.”

Applications and criteria for the EQL Studio Residency in Nashville, New York, and London are available now; all applications will close at 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday, August 24.

A Flowchart To Help You Navigate The Music Of Prince’s Later Years

0

As the result of a distribution deal with Sony, 23 Prince albums originally released from 1995 to 2010 are now available on major streaming services. Some were previously available on Tidal, but the widespread availability of these albums — some of which were originally released only to members of Prince’s NPG Music Club — will open a whole new world to millions of fans who have never or rarely heard this music. To help newbies navigate the re-released music, a 37-track Anthology: 1995-2010 compilation is also now online.

Not sure where to begin with this cornucopia of funk? The Current in Minnesota – one of my favourite radio stations – created a flowchart to get you started.

Commercial for Tommy Wiseau’s store Street Fashions USA, 1998

1

Thomas Wiseau produced, directed, and starred in the 2003 cult film The Room, which has been described by many critics as one of the worst movies ever made and has gained cult film status. When starting out, though, Wiseau worked a variety of jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area, including restaurant busboy and hospital worker, and ran a business called Street Fashions USA that sold irregular blue jeans at discounted prices. He eventually purchased and rented out large retail spaces in and around San Francisco and Los Angeles, making him independently wealthy, helping him fund his movies.

Acclaimed Drummer Martin Atkins to Release New Book, “Memories – My Five Years In and Out of Public Image Ltd. (1979-1985)”

1

“For a large chunk of my time with PiL, we were the most dangerous band on the planet – no one knew what we were going to do next – (least of all us) – it was special and crazy and awesome as fuck,” begins acclaimed drummer Martin Atkins in his PledgeMusic campaign for his upcoming book, Memories – My Five Years In and Out of Public Image Ltd. (1979-1985). Atkins made his major debut in the late 1970’s as the on-again-off-again drummer for John Lydon’s (more commonly known by his stage name Johnny Rotten) post-Sex Pistols’ experimental project, Public Image Ltd., and he has tales to tell.

As of now Martin Atkins has made his PledgeMusic campaign the sole way of pre-ordering the book. In conjunction with the pre-order, many special items are available via PledgeMusic, including a rare 1979 cardboard lyric print that can be autographed by request, a signed drumhead, signed drumsticks, a live drum session, and more.

Martin Atkins is the definition of entrepreneurial activity in cultural arts endeavors. His 35+ years in the music business spans across genres and borders and industries. He was a member of Public Image Ltd. and Killing Joke. He founded industrial supergroup Pigface, The Damage Manual, and Murder Inc., and has contributed to Nine Inch Nails (for which he has a Grammy) and Ministry. He is the owner of Invisible Records and Mattress Factory Recording Studios (est. 1988). He is the author of Tour:Smart, Welcome To The Music Business….You’re F*cked!” Band:Smart, the new Music Industries Coordinator at Millikin University in Decatur Illinois. Martin is a producer, drummer, documentary filmmaker, DJ, and father of four. Whatever the future of entrepreneurial music business education is, you can pretty much bet that he’ll be in the middle of it.

The PledgeMusic site also includes a personal video filmed by Martin Atkins discussing the book. There are only 40 days left to take part in the campaign, so act fast! See here for all contribution items and the video: https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/martin-atkins-memories

“If there is one thing that has changed over that time it has been my understanding that different people really do see things differently – hence the title Memories. I do very much care about the sum of the parts and the parts that make up the sum,” says Martin Atkins. “This isn’t my book in the same way that PiL back then wasn’t just John’s. It was all of ours. And as much as I might prefer to not be called a twat by Keith Levene – his – or anyone else’s exclusion from this book seems incorrect. There is more to be learned from seeing other people’s points of view than by slamming the door. So, I’ve been careful to talk to a lot of people that were around us. You might call this the companion book to the first part of The Public Image Is Rotten documentary. My memories are intense and when that fails, I have my diaries!

This is a journey for me too – I’ve already experienced a few things that have surprised me, stretched myself in ways that I am proud of and I’m excited to continue this journey of discovery and documentation with you.”

To pre-order your copy of Memories – My Five Years In and Out of Public Image Ltd. (1979-1985) and for more information, visit the PledgeMusic campaign page.
