Watch Saturday Night Live’s Brian Doyle-Murray tribute to John Belushi in 1982

0

Among his many movies, John Belushi remains a legend thanks to his raging attitude and a gifted comedy craftsman which he displayed as one of the seven original cast members on Saturday Night Live. Throughout his career, Belushi had a close personal and artistic partnership with his fellow SNL star Dan Aykroyd, whom he met while they were both working at Chicago’s The Second City comedy club. And it was there Belushi also met Brian Doyle-Murray, brother of Bill, one of the original cast members.

In his personal life, Belushi struggled with heavy drug use that affected his comedy career, and was dismissed and rehired by SNL creator Lorne Michaels on several occasions due to his behavior. In 1982, Belushi died from combined drug intoxication caused by an injection of a heroin and cocaine mixture.

At the conclusion of the very first live SNL episode two weeks after Belushi’s death, Brian Doyle-Murray gave an epic but sober tribute to him.

Paul McCartney To Release All-New Double A-Side Single “I Don’t Know”/“Come On To Me”

0

Following a whirlwind week that saw his Instagram presence rebooted as he played one of the most intimate gigs of his storied career, Paul McCartney is done keeping the world in suspense: “I Don’t Know” and “Come On To Me,” will be released tomorrow as a double A-Side single.

The first tastes of Paul’s brand new studio album due out later this year on Capitol Records, the two A-sides are polar opposites: “I Don’t Know” being a plaintive, soul-soothing ballad as only Paul can deliver, and “Come On To Me” a raucous stomper that fans that first spark of chemistry into a rocking blaze.

Worldwide speculation about a new Paul McCartney album instantly reached fever pitch as his Instagram account whited out last week—only to ratchet higher as Paul was spotted taking selfies at landmarks in Liverpool the same day. The evening’s climactic event was a surprise gig at the tiny Liverpool Philharmonic Pub, during which “Come On To Me” made its live debut alongside a set of classics spanning Paul’s career.

Paul’s new album is slated for Fall 2018 release on Capitol Records. Further details will be announced shortly.

This is the greatest lyric video I’ve ever seen — Toronto’s Kalyna Rakel creates comic book for new album & video “Who Knew”

0

Kalyna Rakel has always done things her own way. After early success at 16 with a video on Much Music, she walked away from a pop record deal in Europe to teach herself guitar and play music on the street. Since then she has recorded four independent albums and played her songs for thousands of people all around the world.

Her songs come straight from the heart, sung with a voice that has been described as Amy Winehouse meets Janis Joplin. With her tour van, Daisy, and Handsome, her steel resonator guitar, the stories in her songs evoke the raw sound of the travelling blues. Her latest record, ‘Before & After You’, is a two-part concept album telling the story of love gone good and bad. Featuring some of Canada’s top musicians, including legendary guitarist Kevin Breit, the album ranges from distorted garage blues to dreamy ethereal folk. The record comes with a 24-page comic book of Kalyna’s original drawings, featuring the album’s lyrics to tell the stories of the songs.

Whether she is playing for tips on the street or on a festival main stage, Kalyna delivers her songs with an honesty that can move a crowd to tears. As her following continues to grow, she remains true to her music and grateful for the opportunity to share her stories.

In her own words:

“I wanted to make a video for the single “Who Knew” that would be memorable while drawing attention to the lyrics and story of the song. I floated the idea of a standard lyric video, hiring an animator to generate the text and put it to music, but it felt a little synthetic for the sound and feel of the album. In the end, it felt truer to the earthy sound of the album to take a marker and construction paper and draw out the lyrics myself, by hand, in the kitchen.

“The idea for the constantly moving paper came when I was listening to the bass and drums on the song and thinking of how to capture that constant sense of forward motion. I wanted people to feel like they were watching one never-ending piece of paper and try and make sense of how the whole thing was put together.

“The first step was to split all the lyrics into little one-sentence snapshots and to plan out how to write them and which words and visual elements to emphasize. Next it was about figuring out different ways to move from one frame to the next. If you look at the video the movement gets more and more involved as it progresses, going from shifts to spins to flips to rips to match the intensity of the different sections.

“Once the video was all mapped out it was a long night and morning of cutting pieces of construction paper to the right size and writing the lyrics out along to a recording of the song slowed down to about 10 percent speed. We split it into sections (verse, chorus, etc.) and there were a few little adjustments to timing in post-production but it was important to me that it was fairly organic and that it felt like the whole thing was drawn in time to the song.

“I like the challenge of doing things in real time as it creates a rawness and intensity that you don’t get when you can fuss over every little detail. If you look carefully there are a few points where words are rushed or squeezed in to fit the borders. I love that, perfection is boring!

“With ‘Who Knew’ I wanted to take a budget of $12 and a lot of coffee and make a video that pops off the screen and tells a story. I like the video and I hope you do too!”

Canadian Vocal Group Cadence Set To Release New Album, Home, On June 22

0

The stage lights fall, the crowd goes quiet, and four harmonious voices rise up and fill the air. The melodies unfurl into something both familiar and fresh. What comes next may be a classic song by Joni Mitchell or Louis Prima. It may be an old bebop standard or cheeky arrangement of a 1980s hit. But these are arrangements like you’ve never heard them before—containing all the richness of a full band, but performed using just four voices.

This is Cadence, Canada’s premiere vocal group. Based in Toronto, this a cappella ensemble has been wowing audiences across the country and around the world for nearly 20 years. Whether performing at sold-out jazz clubs and concert halls, at music festivals, for educational outreach, or for corporate functions, the members of Cadence bring an infectious energy and uncanny verve to every song they sing.

The group’s four critically acclaimed studio albums, Cool Yule (2011), Speak Easy (2010), Twenty for One (2005), and Frost Free(2000) have won or been nominated for numerous awards, including three nods from the JUNO Awards and 10 from CARA, the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.

Cadence’s 5th studio album Home is nearly set for release this Friday. This album will be the first of its kind: all Canadian songs recorded using only the human voice. The four members of Cadence were born in four different provinces spanning from BC to PEI and this original song, “The Watcher On The Rock (Slhx̱í7lsh)” features elements from both coasts.

There is a rock in Stanley Park at the entrance to Vancouver Harbour that lies on the traditional territory of the Squamish Nation. The words for this song were inspired by a legend that tells of a young warrior who defied The Creator in his mission to ensure a spotless life for his unborn son. Impressed by his commitment to future generations, The Creators’s agents transformed the young man into an indestructible monument to Clean Fatherhood, the rock called Slhx̱í7lsh.

The musical arrangement is in the style of an epic 6/8 ballad and features elements often found in Maritime songs of this type with vocal parts that are stark, exposed, and broadly sung leaving room for the story to take centre stage. The accompanying video was shot at Irving Nature Park near St. John, NB.

Reuben And The Dark Announce North American Fall Tour

On the heels of a successful stint of U.S. tour dates, Reuben and the Dark have announced additional North American shows, including Chicago and Minneapolis.

The spirited folk-rock outfit recently released a new album, Arms of a Dream, out now on Arts & Crafts. The record finds songwriter/vocalist Reuben Bullock working outside his comfort zone, both musically and lyrically. The result is Bullock’s most vivid and transformative music to date: an intimate exploration of the inversion of imagination and reality in dreams.

“Dreaming” from the album debuted at #2 most added at AAA. Bullock, a semi-professional skateboarder, traveled to Barcelona to fulfill a childhood dream skating expedition in the breathtaking music video for the song. Reuben previously released equally stunning videos for “All or Nothing” and “Hurricane” from Arms of a Dream.

Reuben and the Dark has performed at many festivals, as well, including Sasquatch, Austin City Limits, Osheaga, Field Trip, and more. They’ve shared stages with Vance Joy, The Strumbellas, Boy & Bear, and The Paper Kites, to name a few.
