David Byrne’s American Utopia” to Debut in Movie Theaters on September 15

Iconic Events Releasing, Participant, River Road Entertainment, Warner Music Entertainment, and HBO Entertainment announced today the theatrical debut of the Emmy-nominated feature David Byrne’s American Utopia, coming to movie theaters nationwide for a special, one-night-only theatrical event on Wednesday, September 15th, 2021. These unique theatrical events will also include an introduction by David Byrne, as well as a never-before-seen conversation with Byrne and director Spike Lee.

Directed by Oscar and Emmy award-winning director Spike Lee and produced by 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, Todomundo, and RadicalMedia, the one-of-a-kind, dynamic special gives moviegoing audiences nationwide access to Byrne’s electrifying Broadway show that played to sold-out, record-breaking audiences during its original 2019-2020 Broadway run and returns to Broadway beginning September 17, 2021 at the St. James Theatre. Joined by 11 musical artists from around the world, Academy, Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning musician David Byrne (Talking Heads) performs songs from his 2018 album of the same name, songs from Talking Heads, and from his solo career.

The Emmy-nominated HBO Special features band members Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan and Bobby Wooten III, all of whom will reunite with Byrne on Broadway this fall. The production was recently named recipient of a Special Tony Award. The original American Utopia album, as well as the Broadway cast recording, were released on Warner Music Group’s Nonesuch Records.

SiriusXM and Pandora announced today the Small Stage Series, a series of performances with premier artists spanning music genres and styles, and comedy, and held in small iconic venues.

Launching on August 19 with Dave Matthews live from a secret location and Kane Brown from Nashville, Small Stage Series will feature exclusive performances in cities across the country. Ringo Starr’s New EP ‘Change The World’ Will Be Released September 24

Ringo Starr’s new EP Change The World will be released on September 24, 2021. Available to preorder now here, these 4 tracks were all recorded at Starr’s Roccabella West studio just as he did for his Zoom In EP released in March 2021, and features frequent and new collaborators, creating songs that span the spectrum of pop, country, reggae and rock and roll.

Ringo comments, “I’ve been saying I only want to release EPs at this point and this is the next one. What a blessing it’s been during this year to have a studio here at home and be able to collaborate with so many great musicians, some I’ve worked with before and some new friends.”

Starr first shared the news on Thursday, August 12 on talkshoplive, when he appeared on their Rock ‘N’ Roll Channel to give fans the first opportunity to pre-order the new EP.

The lead single “Let’s Change The World” delivers a welcome dose of hope and Starr’s trademark optimism. The song was written by Joseph Williams and Steve Lukather both of whom also played on the track with backing vocals by Amy Keys, Zelma Davis, Billy Valentine and Darryl Phinnessee.

“Just That Way” was written and performed by Ringo and his longtime engineer Bruce Sugar, and it carries on the reggae vibe from Zoom In’s “Waiting for the Tides to Turn” with Tony Chen returning on guitar, joined by Fully Fullwood on Bass and Ed Roth on Hammond B3 with Zelma and Zho Davis on backing vocals.

“Coming Undone” is Starr’s first collaboration with Linda Perry, who wrote and plays on the track also featuring Trombone Shorty. Everyone can relate to having had moments of coming undone, and the tender, melodic country sounds coupled with Ringo’s warm voice offer a welcome reprieve.

For the final number, Ringo rocks his own version of “Rock Around The Clock” revved up by the unmistakable licks of Joe Walsh on guitar. They are joined by Nathan East on Upright Bass, Bruce Sugar on Piano and Amy Keys and Windy Wagner on Backing Vocals.

Today, Platinum Certified singer, songwriter, and producer Chelsea Cutler drops her latest single, “You Can Have It,” from her highly anticipated sophomore album.

“You Can Have It” illuminates another side of the songwriter, as delicately plucked acoustic guitar shifts into a head-nodding beat, and she delivers upbeat verses before a sun-kissed, soaring refrain, “Anything that you want, that I got, that’s for you.” Chelsea co-wrote the song with James Alan and co-produced it with Kevin White of Rice N’ Peas.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss Reunite for Raise The Roof Out November 19

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss have announced the forthcoming release of their new album Raise The Roof, out November 19 on Rounder Records. The surprise announcement finds Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Plant and 27-time Grammy-winner Krauss, reunited after some fourteen years, following the historic success of their first collaboration Raising Sand (2007/Rounder), which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, generated platinum sales, and earned six Grammy Awards including Album and Record of the Year.

Like its predecessor, Raise The Roof was produced by T Bone Burnett, who worked with Plant and Krauss to expand their collaboration in thrilling new directions, accompanied by drummer Jay Bellerose, guitarists Marc Ribot, David Hidalgo, Bill Frisell, and Buddy Miller, bassists Dennis Crouch and Viktor Krauss, along with pedal steel guitarist Russ Pahl among others. The album features twelve new recordings of songs by legends and unsung heroes including Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, The Everly Brothers, Anne Briggs, Geeshie Wiley, Bert Jansch and more. Other highlights include a Plant-Burnett original, “High and Lonesome,” and the classic “Can’t Let Go,” written by Randy Weeks and first recorded by Lucinda Williams.

The songs selected for Raise The Roof alternately reflect deep-rooted influences and new revelations. For his part, Robert Plant was keen to introduce the English folk traditions he has loved since adolescence, while Krauss cites hearing “Quattro (World Drifts In)” by the American group Calexico, as “the moment I knew we’d make another album.”

“We wanted it to move,” Krauss continues. “We brought other people in, other personalities within the band, and coming back together again in the studio brought a new intimacy to the harmonies.”

Adds Plant: “You hear something and you go ‘Man, listen to that song, we got to sing that song!’ It’s a vacation, really — the perfect place to go that you least expected to find.”

Released in 2007, Raising Sand is one of the most beloved and acclaimed albums of the 21st century. In addition to winning all six Grammy Awards for which it was nominated, it also earned a CMA Award for Musical Event of the Year, plus Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year accolades from the Americana Music Honors and Awards.

Maxwell’s ‘Now’ Marks 20th Anniversary with Digital Remaster and New Digital EPs

The 20th anniversary digital reissue of Maxwell’s 2001 album, Now, is out today, August 13th, remastered in 24-bit Hi-res. It is accompanied by the release of two digital EP’s, Get To Know Ya, which is being released on DSPs for the first time, and Lifetime, which features tracks previously unavailable for streaming.

On August 14, 2001, less than a month before the 9/11 attack that pulled down the Twin Towers in lower Manhattan, Maxwell’s third album, Now, was released by Columbia. Like many cultural products released around that tragic date in world history, its reception was impacted by its proximity to that event. In retrospect it shouldn’t be surprising that Now would become Maxwell’s first number one album, selling over one million copies. In the difficult fall and winter of ‘01, when all of America was in mourning, and when the pain was particularly acute in his hometown of New York, Maxwell’s songs smoothed rattled nerves, calmed raging anxiety, and made love still seem a possibility in a time of hate. Unlike the preceding albums Urban Hang Suite and Embrya, this LP’s eleven tracks were not united by a quasi-narrative concept, but by the more general idea of intimacy. These are songs that feel like a caress, that deal with the struggle to see the world through the eyes of your lover and, in so doing, see yourself more fully. When you listen to “Changed’ or “Lifetime” or “Symptom Unknown,” you hear the voice of a singer working through what it means to be close to someone, what of your old self has to be left behind in the process, and what is gained by being open and vulnerable. Unlike the prevailing hip hop ethos of male swagger and dominance, Maxwell is arguing for an alternative masculine model that tries to see all sides of love, and seeks partnership and not control. Taking on Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” a song by a white British woman singer, and transforming it into a black American man’s signature performance, makes his interpretation as brave as it is bold. Produced by MUSZE (aka Maxwell), with songs co-written with collaborators Hod David and Stuart Matthewman, Now is a brilliant showcase for the singer’s prowess. Five years after his recording debut, there’s nuance, passion, and more than a little angst in his voice as he croons, soars, and moans on “NoOne,” “For Lovers Only,” and “W/As My Girl.” Today, knee deep in the age of auto tune, often the true authority of the human voice gets lost in the mix. However, this album, released near the turn of the century, is a celebration of the lost art of singing your ass off. It’s not about powering through a song, but understanding how to suggest pain, wonderment, and devotion just by sustaining a note a bit longer. This is modern soul music sans the shouting, yet full of emotion. Now opens with the danceable “Get to Know Ya,” a song whose lyrics express the desire to truly “see” his partner, and ends with the funky “Now/At The Party,” but this is a primarily a quiet, introspective collection and that’s its great strength. It’s why Now meant so much when first released and continues to resonate twenty years later. – Nelson George

Chance the Rapper’s Concert Film, MAGNIFICENT COLORING WORLD, Premieres Nationwide Today

Today, August 13, Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring World officially arrives on big screens across the country. For a limited time this month, fans can catch the film in person at select AMC Theatres throughout North America, including screens in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and several other cities. Directed by Jake Shreier (Robot & Frank, Paper Towns), and featuring a stage and sound design like none other, Magnificent Coloring World is the feel-good movie and music ticket of the summer. The concert film is self-distributed through Chance the Rapper’s House of Kicks production company and film house and marks the first time an artist has independently distributed a film through AMC Theatres.

Staying true to his independent artistry, Chance wrote, produced, starred in, edited and distributed Magnificent Coloring World himself. He spent much of his time at home over the last year, working hard to bring this never-before-seen footage to light in the way that it should be seen. Filmed in 2017 on the heels of Chance taking home 3 GRAMMY Awardsfor his critically-acclaimed mixtape ‘Coloring Book’, Magnificent Coloring Worldtransports viewers into the front row of a Chance the Rapper concert. Amidst a monumental arena tour, Chance invited a select group of his biggest Chicago-area fans to an undisclosed event. Fans showed up to a meeting spot and were brought by school bus to Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, where they were surprised to enter a secret Chance the Rapper concert. Over the course of an hour, Chance ripped through his hit catalog, performing songs from Coloring Book and Acid Rap for the enthusiastic crowd.

This is not the typical documentation of a concert, which is then later packaged to be a concert movie. Instead, Chance knew ahead of time that he wanted to create a special cinematic experience. He arranged the space with six multi-color sound stages, nine cameras, and intricately placed microphones to capture the audience and show in a unique way. With a run time of just 61 minutes, Magnificent Coloring World captures the energy in the room that day, bringing Chance the Rapper’s larger-than-life persona to the big screen.

Magnificent Coloring World arrives a few weeks before Chance is set to make his only festival appearance of the year, at Milwaukee’s Summerfest Music Festival on September 3.

Spotify has recently been seen to have made a substantial effort to make changes and improvements to their software, which is a welcomed addition.

However, there is a wide range of features that users may not even be aware of, which is exactly what we are going to be discussing in this article.

In this article, we will be taking a look at just a few of the new features Spotify has released as well as the motivations behind their recent innovations.

Enjoy Live Music Through Greenroom

Perhaps the feature that has received the most praise and excitement from the users of Spotify, is the Greenroom.

The Greenroom is going to be a new feature that is set to be Implemented on Spotify that will allow people to perform live shows and allow users of Spotify to listen in.

Sure, some of the other recent updates Spotify has announced can certainly be considered more practical or functional than the Greenroom, but the Greenroom has got both Spotify users and artists alike excited.

This is an amazing innovation because it is going to be of enormous benefit to up-and-coming artists, allowing them to build their following and audience through live shows as well as the usual pre-recorded songs. In turn, this is going to be a drastic positive change for new artists, as it will allow them to build a more personal connection with their audience.

Of course, it’s not only artists that are going to benefit from the implementation of the Greenroom. For those people who love the realism of live music, they will now be able to get the same experience as they would have from other sites like twitch, but for a much more specialized audience.

A similar event occurred in other corners on the internet such as when sites like GGPoker Canada started offering live poker games on their sites, bringing in vast numbers of people who now had an alternative to travelling to a casino.

This means people who would have previously watched live music on sites like YouTube or twitch will more than likely switch to Spotify to get their live music fix, increasing business for Spotify ten-fold.

Focused Mode for Those Dialled in Sessions

A much more practical addition that Spotify is set on adding, is the implementation of a “focused mode” which allows other distractions to be limited while listening on Spotify for those who need to stay in the zone.

As things stand now, we are still now sure how people will be able to access new Spotify features such as focus mode, but for practical features like focused mode, it’s safe to assume there will be a quick access button, able to be clicked at a moment’s notice.

This was a very smart innovation from Spotify, and it is something that next to none of their competitors offer. Being able to listen to music requires one to have the sound on, on whichever device they may be using, so, of course, that means that notifications will also be heard as well.

However, with this new change, users will be able to listen to music while not receiving any notifications or distractions.
