TimePlay to Launch its First In-Theatre Tournament with Cineplex

Three years after TimePlay Inc. and Cineplex began running multi-player interactive games for Movie-goers at Cineplex theatres across Canada, the platform is about to pull back the curtain on a completely new concept. For the first time ever, Movie-goers will have the chance to compete in a gaming tournament for the chance to win $5,000 in total cash prizes, including $2,500 for the first place winner.

Launching January 26, 2018, and running through to February 22, 2018, the tournament concept will pilot at 14 Cineplex theatres in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). During that time, Movie-goers will compete against each other in a TimePlay gaming experience 15 minutes before their movie begins. Players’ scores accumulate during the program and the top 20 participants will compete in a larger dedicated final event on March 17, 2018, at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto. As part of this special tournament, TimePlay will be offering new games revolving around sports and music.

TimePlay’s proprietary technology transforms a smartphone into a game controller, which connects to the big screen and creates two-way interactivity. Movie-goers can participate in a completely new social entertainment experience, sparking live competition between family, friends and strangers on 720 of Cineplex’s big screens.

The Recording Academy has announced that iconic songwriter and celebrated performer Neil Diamond will be honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, a Special Merits Award that celebrates performers that have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording. A special award presentation ceremony and concert celebrating all of honorees will be held in the summer of 2018.

Throughout his illustrious and wide-ranging career, Neil Diamond has sold over 130 million albums worldwide and has dominated the charts for more than five decades with 38 Top 40 singles and 16 Top 10 albums. SiriusXM today announced the launch of “Last Mile, Second Chances,” an exclusive new show about formerly incarcerated women moving back into society and how communities can help in the transition. The show airs on SiriusXM’s Urban View channel 126 Sundays at 9:00 am ET.

Hosted by justice reform advocate Topeka K. Sam, the compelling weekly show focuses on women personally affected by the penitentiary system sharing their experiences, traumas, and stories and tackles the topics of disenfranchisement, paying restitution, and the larger issue of incarceration and its ripple effects on women’s lives and that of their families.

“I am thrilled to host ‘Last Mile, Second Chances’ and help women turn the page on their past and start fresh,” said Topeka K. Topeka K. Sam is the Founder and Executive Director of The Ladies of Hope Ministries whose mission it is to help disenfranchised and marginalized women and girls transition back into society through spiritual empowerment, education, entrepreneurship and advocacy. She is also the founder of Hope House NYC, a safe housing space for women and girls. Topeka serves on the board of directors for Grassroots Leadership. Stuart Murdoch is a Scottish musician, writer and filmmaker, and the lead singer and songwriter for the indie pop band Belle and Sebastian.

As the state of the world becomes more perilous and the political landscape becomes more toxic, lots of artists are wrestling with this means for their work. What is my art really doing? Am I helping anything? Those seem like healthy questions to ask.

Absolutely. You have to respond, not only to what is happening in the world, but also just to what’s happening to you, what’s happening to your family. Most people have a desire to respond to problems in a positive and inquisitive way, and why shouldn’t that include artists? So I know there’s a lot of shit going down, but I think it’s a good thing to still make art. We’ve had these discussions in the group as well about being useful. It has inspired us.

I think our general feeling, my general feeling, is a little bit akin to if the problems of the world just now in society and in politics are like a war, then we’re kind of like the non-combatants, you know? I feel like I would be a war chaplain. I’d be the fellow running about the trenches just handing out cigarettes with a pocket bible and saying prayers for the soldiers. I think there’s a limit to how much you can actually do in terms of anger and fighting, and fighting what’s going on, and maybe the artist’s job is to be more conciliatory. I don’t know, different people have different attitudes.

The trio from Astoria, New York just released their debut Lovely EP, and it’s a perfect time to take a step back to the early 2000s of The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, TV on the Radio, where the state had a spotlight like no other. Closely-cropped rock and roll, and every second of this song isn’t wasted. It drives and plows through your heart.

Aaron Orbit
All The Lonely Ghost
Aaron Orbit was born and raised as Aaron Johnson in the Southern California beachside city of Ventura. As the son of an accomplished musician and recording engineer, Orbit, was infatuated with music at an early age and began learning guitar in elementary school. Ok, so fast forward to now. If you’re missing groups like Squeeze and Crowded House and the softer side of Elvis Costello, Aaron’s got your back.

Quiet Storm (feat. Daniel SkyHigh McClain & Regal)
Tokyo→Boston→Tokyo. He started producing in US and pushes through the best of R&B’s wax, around the same time and sound as Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. A pleading yelp away from giving them a giant hug, this is an excellent take on modern soul and plainly deserves to be heard.

Sam Ness
Whispered on the Wind
Born in small town Wisconsin, he’s got more in common with, say, Justin Vernon than Eric Benét, but no less soulful. His sharp intelligence to letting the song tell the story, and the musicians to breathe and go, never limits his imagination to anything short of brilliance. His voice and lyrics rides comfortably and raises the roof for the last chorus.

Donny Evans
Life’s Too Short
4-and-a-half minutes of tunes, harmonies, all playing with class and resists the temptation to make the song any bigger and bombastic than it needs to be. Straightforward and singing with passion, Donny knows a hook when the muse strikes, and I hope there’s more where this came from.

Coming from south-east Melbourne the band implement various pop influences into this subtle song until about 3 minutes in, where the drugs start to take effect. They’ve got an authentic playfulness and right-on-point tightness between the members. Tame Impala would all be proud of them for carrying the torch.

Reilly Stapleton
Call My Name
Australia, you really have an embarrassment of riches tonight. Florence + The Machine is easily a signpoint here, with her pop-dramatic sheen in full force. There’s wisdom right here, in the influences, in the chords, in the use of her powerful vocals that reveals there might not be another better singer at her age in her country than Reilly.
