Stream The Cranberries’ NPR Tiny Desk Concert

0

It’s easy to forget just how massive The Cranberries were in the 1990s, rising to international fame with their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, which became a huge commercial success, on the way to the group selling more than 40 million records worldwide. The band achieved four top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?; No Need to Argue, To the Faithful Departed and Bury the Hatchet)[3] and eight top 20 singles on the Modern Rock Tracks chart (“Linger”, “Dreams”, “Zombie”, “Ode to My Family”, “Ridiculous Thoughts”, “Salvation”, “Free to Decide”, and “Promises”).

On January 15, 2018, lead singer Dolores O’Riordan died unexpectedly in London, where she had arrived for a recording session. Let’s take a look, and listen back, to the band performing at NPR for a Tint Desk Concert.

Short Cuts: The Best Songs Heard On January 18, 2018 From The Indie World

0

Claire Vandiver
Is This Goodnight
Based in Nashville, TN, Claire has a defiant, vulnerable voice that fits neatly with the music, a cross between country and Cowboy Junkies. A subdued ballad that easily gets better with every listen. No mean feat, since it’s a killer first listen.

Jet Luv
Angel
The trio from Astoria, New York just released their debut Lovely EP, and it’s a perfect time to take a step back to the early 2000s of The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, TV on the Radio, where the state had a spotlight like no other. Closely-cropped rock and roll, and every second of this song isn’t wasted. It drives and plows through your heart.

Aaron Orbit
All The Lonely Ghost
Aaron Orbit was born and raised as Aaron Johnson in the Southern California beachside city of Ventura. As the son of an accomplished musician and recording engineer, Orbit, was infatuated with music at an early age and began learning guitar in elementary school. Ok, so fast forward to now. If you’re missing groups like Squeeze and Crowded House and the softer side of Elvis Costello, Aaron’s got your back.

KLK Beats
Quiet Storm (feat. Daniel SkyHigh McClain & Regal)
Tokyo→Boston→Tokyo. He started producing in US and pushes through the best of R&B’s wax, around the same time and sound as Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. A pleading yelp away from giving them a giant hug, this is an excellent take on modern soul and plainly deserves to be heard.

Sam Ness
Whispered on the Wind
Born in small town Wisconsin, he’s got more in common with, say, Justin Vernon than Eric Benét, but no less soulful. His sharp intelligence to letting the song tell the story, and the musicians to breathe and go, never limits his imagination to anything short of brilliance. His voice and lyrics rides comfortably and raises the roof for the last chorus.

Donny Evans
Life’s Too Short
4-and-a-half minutes of tunes, harmonies, all playing with class and resists the temptation to make the song any bigger and bombastic than it needs to be. Straightforward and singing with passion, Donny knows a hook when the muse strikes, and I hope there’s more where this came from.

Franjapan
Next To
Coming from south-east Melbourne the band implement various pop influences into this subtle song until about 3 minutes in, where the drugs start to take effect. They’ve got an authentic playfulness and right-on-point tightness between the members. Tame Impala would all be proud of them for carrying the torch.

Reilly Stapleton
Call My Name
Australia, you really have an embarrassment of riches tonight. Florence + The Machine is easily a signpoint here, with her pop-dramatic sheen in full force. There’s wisdom right here, in the influences, in the chords, in the use of her powerful vocals that reveals there might not be another better singer at her age in her country than Reilly.

That Time Prince Met The Muppets In 1997

On September 13, 1997, just after Prince announced his new name would be that squiggly symbol, he met The Muppets and had so much fun, he sang two songs, Starfish and Coffee and She Gave Her Angels.

U2’s “Get Out Of Your Own Way” Video Gets Animated By Broken Fingaz Crew

0

Broken Fingaz Crew, the fearless Israeli graffiti collective whose provocative, groundbreaking and often disturbing fluorescent sketches were among the first street art in their native Haifa, have directed U2’s new video for “Get Out Of Your Own Way.” Broken Fingaz Crew’s animated realization of the song can be viewed below:

Known only by the pseudonyms that preserve their anonymity with local authorities–Unga, Tant, Kip and Desco—the enigmatic Broken Fingaz Crew approached U2 with the concept of an animated visualization of the second single from the band’s new Songs of Experience. After a successful collaboration on U2’s video for “American Soul,” the band were inspired to give Broken Fingaz Crew full creative control based on their impassioned interpretation of “Get Out Of Your Own Way.” The result reaffirms Broken Fingaz Crew’s standing as artistic and social pioneers emerging from an underground of their own creation.

Broken Fingaz Crew described the mission statement of their  “Get Out Of Your Own Way” video as such:

“The video addresses the current political situation: 2017 for us was the year fascists worldwide felt confident enough to raise their heads again, encouraged by Trump and other world leaders, who use people’s fear to build more walls and segregation.

The song is both a personal letter and a clarion cry to the global situation, and in the same way, we’ve combined our psychedelic pop style with political imagery; shot entirely analogue, using paper cut and stop motion animation techniques in collaboration with Adam Albo, who edited the video.”

In other U2 news, the band have announced the UK/Europe leg of the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour 2018, with new dates to go on sale January 26th. For a full confirmed routing and further information, go to U2.com or see below:

The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach To Host New Monthly Show On SiriusXM

0

Dan Auerbach, singer, songwriter, musician, producer and member of The Black Keys, will host a new monthly music show, The Easy Hour, on The Spectrum (Ch. 28).

The Easy Hour will feature Auerbach playing hand-picked tunes from all genres of music from his personal library.  In addition to sharing classics, Auerbach will also introduce some of his favorite new artists in this one-hour program.

“I am honored to be able to share some of my favorite songs with listeners on SiriusXM’s The Spectrum this year, said Dan Auerbach. “Easy Hour will be a chance for listeners to hear some music—both old and new—that they wouldn’t normally hear on the radio. I hope people enjoy listening as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.”

This new series kicks off Sunday, January 21, at 8 pm ET and is the latest guest-curated program to be added to The Spectrum channel, joining other popular shows including Off the Cuff with Theodora Richards and The Writer’s Block with David Fricke.

Auerbach’s new solo album, Waiting On A Song, is the debut release on his new record label, Easy Eye Sound, which features releases from other artists and is distributed by Auerbach’s longtime label Nonesuch Records. Easy Eye Sound is built equally around Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, where The Black Keys recorded their last two albums, as well as the collection of famous session musicians that have come to call the studio home.

Auerbach kicks off the “Easy Eye Sound Review Tour,” a 20-date North American tour, on February 10, in support of his new album, Waiting On A Song.

SiriusXM Has Launched Men’s Lifestyle Channel Barstool Radio

0

SiriusXM Canada, the country’s leading audio entertainment company, and Barstool Sports, a leading comedy, sports and men’s lifestyle brand, are teaming up to launch a new 24/7 channel on SiriusXM, starting in 2018. The Barstool Radio on SiriusXM channel will air nationwide on satellite radios and on the SiriusXM app, and will showcase the site’s funny, irreverent and unfiltered approach to covering sports, men’s lifestyle, popular culture and more. The channel will be heard on SiriusXM Channel 85 beginning January 17th.

The news was announced yesterday by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy.

Last December, SiriusXM and Barstool teamed up to launch a daily show, Barstool Radio on SiriusXM, hosted by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, Kevin “KFC” Clancy and additional Barstool personalities. The new daily lineup on the Barstool Radio on SiriusXM channel will feature Barstool Radio, a rotation of existing Barstool podcasts and new, original shows. Additional details on that programming will be announced at a later date.

Barstool has a very unique and compelling voice in today’s media landscape and SiriusXM’s uncensored international platform is the perfect way for that voice to reach and interact live with fans across North America. The daily Barstool Radio show that launched a year ago has been very well received and the new channel will deliver Barstool’s brand of entertainment to SiriusXM listeners on a much larger scale 365 days a year.

“We’re excited to build on our relationship with SiriusXM. They’ve been big believers in our brand and our voice,” said Dave Portnoy, Barstool Sports’ Founder. “The results already speak for themselves this past year and the sky is the limit with this channel.”

SiriusXM Unveils Next Generation of In-Car Audio Entertainment – SiriusXM with 360L

0

SiriusXM and FCA US LLC announced today that SiriusXM’s next generation of in-car audio entertainment – delivering a personalized listening experience, with more variety, smart content recommendations and on-demand audio, all through a new best in class user experience in the vehicle – is available to customers for the first time ever, making its debut today in the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 truck.

Drivers of the all-new Ram 1500 are the first to have access to SiriusXM with 360L, a new platform that for the first time delivers a “360 degree listening” experience to drivers and their passengers via both satellite and streaming, and offers exciting new features and functionality in the vehicle and beyond.  SiriusXM with 360L, which is available on the Ram 1500’s Uconnect 4C NAV with 12-inch display with a SiriusXM All Access subscription, can also receive over the air updates to add features and functions that improve the user experience.

SiriusXM with 360L delivers SiriusXM’s full lineup of more than 200 channels, while enabling the user to enjoy a more personalized “lean back” experience as SiriusXM serves them content recommendations on their touch screen, based on their listening preferences.  Drivers and their passengers will find it easier to discover more of what SiriusXM offers, including exclusive SiriusXM On-Demand programming never before available in the dash.  For example, a subscriber listening to one of Howard Stern’s channels live may be presented with the option of tuning in to Howard’s recent interview with Bono and The Edge of U2, which in turn may lead to a recommendation for SiriusXM’s The Spectrum channel, and it is all available at their fingertips.

“We think SiriusXM with 360L will revolutionize the way you listen to audio in the car, and we are excited to launch it in the all-new Ram 1500, which once again is a leader in bringing the latest technological advancements to drivers,” said Jim Cady, Executive Vice President of Products, Operations & Connected Vehicle Services at SiriusXM.  “SiriusXM with 360L comes along at a time when embedded connectivity is enhancing the in-vehicle entertainment experience for more and more drivers and their passengers. We are using that connectivity to take a giant step forward with our platform, and SiriusXM with 360L improves both our consumer offering and our ability to understand and serve our subscribers. With a better, more adaptable user interface, it allows easy access to content on demand, more personalized programming and an improved display. It will also enable us to understand user behavior, and so over time be better at recommendations and discovery across our wide bundle of content.”

Among the benefits of SiriusXM with 360L are…

More variety

  • More channels (now 200+) available to listeners on their in-dash Uconnect 4C NAV with 12-inch display, including many channels previously only available online.
  • Access to thousands of hours of recorded on-demand shows, interviews, and events in the car, giving the listener more of what they want, when they want to hear it.
  • Enhanced sports play-by-play offering that makes it easier to find the listener’s favorite team when it is game time, and gives them access to the official broadcasts for more pro and college teams.

A more personalized experience

  • Smart content recommendations enable listeners to discover more of what they love, based on listening habits, and it is all served up on screen in an easy to use way.
  • Dynamic user interface allows for easy navigation between channels, shows, and both live and recorded content.
  • Individual listener profiles allow multiple drivers and passengers to customize and maintain their own presets and favorites.
  • Profiles can be synced with listener’s mobile phone to seamlessly access their favorites and pick up listening where they left off in the car on select content.

Ease of use

  • Drivers and passengers can use their voice to search SiriusXM’s extensive library of content, or they can sit back and let “For You” recommendations serve up great content choices.
  • Subscribers can manage their account, renew their subscription and contact SiriusXM through the touch screen on the dash when their vehicle is parked.
  • SiriusXM with 360L can receive over the air updates so users can conveniently get new features at any time.

Ram 1500 owners will receive a one-year subscription to SiriusXM All Access with the purchase of equipped 2019 model vehicles.

Barenaked Ladies to be inducted into Canadian Music Hall of Fame at 2018 JUNO Awards

0

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and CBC are pleased to announce the 2018 inductee into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame will be world-renowned rockers Barenaked Ladies – Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn and Tyler Stewart – alongside original member, co-founder and singer-songwriter Steven Page. The band celebrates their 30th anniversary this year, marking three decades as legendary performers and one of Canada’s most celebrated collectives, earning countless accolades including eight JUNO Awards, two Billboard Music Awards and multiple Grammy nominations.

The Canadian Music Hall of Fame was created by CARAS in 1978 to acknowledge artists who have made an outstanding contribution to the international recognition of Canadian music. Barenaked Ladies will come together for a one-time special appearance with Steven Page on Sunday, March 25 at The 47th Annual JUNO Awards Broadcast on CBC, to mark their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The band will join the ranks of Canadian music icons in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, including Alanis Morissette, Anne Murray, Blue Rodeo, Bruce Cockburn, Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Oscar Peterson, RUSH, The Guess Who, The Tragically Hip, Shania Twain and 2017 inductee Sarah McLachlan. In 2016 the Canadian Music Hall of Fame found a permanent home with the opening of Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre.

“We are honoured to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame,” said Ed Robertson.“For almost 30 years we’ve worked hard to write the best songs we can, make the best records we can make, and do the best shows possible. We’ve travelled the world with our music, but Canada has always been home. This is very special for us.”

“I have so many great memories of my years with Barenaked Ladies, from our beginning in our parents’ basements to playing our songs for audiences all over the world,” said Steven Page.“I’m incredibly proud of all we achieved together, the greatest of all being the fact that our music continues to be a part of so many Canadians’ lives. Congratulations to the guys – I’m humbled by our induction into the Hall of Fame. Here’s hoping that next year we will be inducted into Hall and Oates.”

We are thrilled to be inducting the Barenaked Ladies, alongside Steven Page, into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. For nearly 30 years, their work has dominated charts both globally and domestically as they have grown to become one of the country’s most celebrated musical acts, ” said Allan Reid, President & CEO CARAS/The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts. “We look forward to celebrating all of their achievements and welcoming them into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the 2018 JUNO Awards in Vancouver.

Formed in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario, the chart-topping Barenaked Ladies have been making music for three decades and have sold over 15 million albums worldwide. The band’s style has evolved significantly over the course of their career, favouring acoustic in the early days and growing to encompass a mixture of genres. The 1991 release of The Yellow Tape, initially meant as a demo cassette, would go on to become the first independent tape to ever achieve platinum status, with over 100,000 copies sold in Canada. Following multiple indie cassette releases, the band signed to Sire Records, with whom they released their first full album entitled Gordon. Gordon was a cultural phenomenon in Canada and was certified Diamond (selling over 1 million records). Stunt, released in 1998, would become the band’s most commercially successful record, climbing all the way to No.3 on the Billboard album chart, anchored by the smash hit “One Week,” which peaked at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The band has seen incredible success over their lengthy career with international tours including performances at Madison Square Garden, The Royal Albert Hall and Wembley. Known for such hits as “Pinch Me,” “It’s All Been Done,” “Brian Wilson,” “If I Had $1,000,000,” “Jane,” “Odds Are” and many more, the band also penned the theme song for the hit CBS series, The Big Bang Theory. In 2013 Barenaked Ladies collaborated with Commander Chris Hadfield on the song “I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing),” recorded while the Canadian astronaut was in orbit in the International Space Station. Later that year their 10th studio release, Grinning Streak, debuted at #10 on the Billboard Top 200 followed by 2015’s Silverball and most recently FAKE NUDES, lauded as one of their most dynamic albums to date.

Praised not only for their palpable on-stage chemistry, camaraderie and characteristic improv style, Barenaked Ladies have been recognized for their ongoing philanthropic initiatives. The band was a founding member of Barenaked Planet – Powered by Reverb in 2004 and have since “greened” every tour date, offsetting over 300 metric tonnes of carbon. Barenaked Ladies have also donated their time and effort to Free the Children/WEday, ABC Life Literacy Canada, David Suzuki Foundation – The Blue Dot Tour, and Camp Oochiegeas.

Tickets for The 2018 JUNO Awards are currently on sale through the Rogers Arena Box Office, by phone at 1-855-985-5000 and online at ticketmaster.ca.

What Would Happen If Bruce Lee Fought With Lightsabers? This.

Patrick Nan answered a question nobody asked, but I’m sure glad he did. He added lightsabers to Bruce Lee’s martial arts fight sequence from Fist of Fury and turned into a sci-fi kung-fu express.
