Alessia Cara and Joe Jonas reigned Toronto tonight as hosts of THE 2017 IHEARTRADIO MUCH MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS, where Canadian DJ collective A Tribe Called Red took home their first ever hardware for Video of the Year (“R.E.D.”) and Best Director (“Stadium Pow Wow”, Kevan Funk). Meanwhile, hometown hip-hop sensation Drake won two awards for Most Buzzworthy Canadian and IHEARTRADIO Canadian Single of the Year for “One Dance”. On stage, newly minted solo artists Camila Cabello and Niall Horan, winners of the awards for Best New International Artist and Fan Fave International Artist or Group respectively, each fired up the fans with red-hot medleys of their hit singles, “I Have Questions/Crying in the Club” and “This Town/Slow Hands”.

Canadian indie rock band Arkells hit the stage with an unforgettable performance of “Knocking At The Door” which snagged an MMVA for Fan Fave Video. Winners of IHEARTRADIO International Duo or Group of the Year Imagine Dragons also delivered an electric performance with local drum line 416BEATS on a medley of their hits “Believer” and “Thunder”.

On Twitter the MMVAs trended internationally, becoming the #4 trending topic worldwide, and the #1 in Canada, during the two-hour broadcast. MMVA performers and presenters joined in, posting about their experiences on social feeds, including presenter Nikki Bella who shouted out Much’s own Tyrone Edwards on Twitter, and MMVA host Joe Jonas who shared a fun backstage moment. Fans also made their voice heard this year, with more than 16 million votes for the award’s four Fan Fave categories cast across Twitter, Instagram, and on Much.com

In its inaugural year via a partnership with Twitter, the IHEARTRADIO MMVA PRE-GAME, hosted by Much Digital Studios creators Alayna Fender, Dan Rodo, Marlon Palmer, and Michael Rizzi, was first to hand out the hardware before the big show. Twelve awards were handed out on Twitter during the live pre-show, including the first MMVA for A Tribe Called Red, who along with Director Kevan Funk were awarded with the Best Director Award for their video Stadium Pow Wow.

Leonard Cohen speaks in 1974 on the wild and winding paths of the creative process

0

Pacifica Radio has an incredible interview with Leonard Cohen from December 4, 1974. That year, Cohen would meet an important young musician and producer John Lissauer that produced Cohen’s landmark record New Skin For the Old Ceremony in 1974. It is on this tour that Leonard Cohen did an interview with Pacifica Radio WBAI producer Kathleen Kendel. It should be noted that as Leonard Cohen mentions his friendship with musician Judy Collins, Collins had a show on Pacifica Radio WBAI called simply The Judy Collins show in at least 1965.

The Leonard Cohen interview as a whole is amazing because of how early it was in his career and how intelligent and compelling the line of questioning was by Kathleen Kendel, but a few things stand out in this interview. 1974 was basically at ground zero in the middle of the second wave of Feminism, and Kathleen Kendel takes the opportunity to engage Leonard Cohen on the possibility of sexism in his song Joan of Arc. The questions stirs Cohen to a thoughtful response.

It’s very hard to really untangle the real reasons why you do anything. But I was always interested in music and it seemed to me I always played guitar. I always associated song and singing with some sort of nobility of spirit. The first songs I learned were of the workers movement. I always thought that this was the best way to say the most important things… I don’t mean the most ponderous or pompous things. I mean the important things — like how you feel about things, how you feel about someone else — and I always thought this was the way to do it.

It’s also very difficult to untangle influences because you represent the sum of everything you’ve seen or heard or experienced. The kind of language that I’d like to have been influenced by the Bible and Cervantes, by the old masters. The kind of sensibility I’ve been influenced [by], of course, [is] a great deal by the French writers — Camus, Sartre — the Irish poets — Yeats — the English poets. And, of course, we had our own little group of poets in Montreal years back, all very fine, one man especially standing out — I think one of the finest writers in the language — Irving Leighton. I don’t think he’s known [outside Canada] at all.

Patti Smith on How Writing Poems Are Different From Songwriting

0

How is writing poems different from writing songs?

Patti Smith: Poetry is a solitary process. One does not write poetry for the masses. Poetry is a self-involved, lofty pursuit. Songs are for the people. When I’m writing a song, I imagine performing it. I imagine giving it. It’s a different aspect of communication. It’s for the people.

We always write a certain amount of poetry for the masses. When Allen Ginsberg wrote “Howl,” he didn’t write it for himself. He wrote it to speak out. To make a move, to wake people up. I think rock & roll, as our cultural voice, took that energy and made it even more accessible.

When I’m sitting down to write a poem, I’m not thinking of anyone. I’m not thinking about how it will be received. I’m not thinking it will make people happy or it will inspire them. I’m in a whole other world. A world of complete solitude. But when I’m writing a song, I imagine performing it. I imagine giving it. It’s a different aspect of communication. It’s for the people.

I write songs when I’m by myself, like walking along the beach, and a song comes in my head. Or I wake up from a dream, like “Blakean Year.” I often write songs out of dreams, and take them to my musicians to help me. Sometimes I write melodies that are too complex and I can’t find them on the guitar, because I only know about eight chords. So I take them to Lenny [Kaye] or Tony [Shanahan, her bassist] and they transcribe them into a song.

“Free Money” came to me walking down St. Mark’s at three in the morning. It was pre-dawn, but it was so light in New York City, and it came to me and I sang it to Lenny. He structured it and found the proper chords, and we made a song. It was one of our earliest songs.

Other songs, they just come in my head and I sing them out loud, and the band finds the place, and they adjust it. For myself, the simpler format the better. “Gandhi” is nine minutes on one chord. It’s an improvisation. “Radio Baghdad” was completely improvised. I didn’t know the lyrics, but I knew I wanted to speak out against the invasion of Iraq. Being a mother, I freely entered into the mother consciousness of the mothers of Baghdad who were trying to comfort their children as they were being bombed. So these lyrics that come to me are self-perpetuated.

A Flock of Seagulls & Jimmy D Robinson Going Collab For “Living in Time” Album

0

It was announced today by Mind Juice Records, that the collaboration between American poet Jimmy D Robinson and A Flock of Seagulls, with the band’s original lead singer Mike Score, will be releasing the full-length “Living In Time” album near summer’s end—to ensure qualification for the 2018 Grammy Awards. This is good news for longtime Seagulls & Robinson fans who have been following the pairing’s advance singles (Billboard Club Top 25 hit “Ageless Prince” and fan-favorite “In the Garden”) while anxiously awaiting the full-length “Living In Time” CD release. Score and Robinson both confirm that the “Living In Time” pop and electronica-tinged, chill lounge CD will hopefully be finalized and ready to be released soon after the next single “Pedro” is promoted to radio and clubs—prior to the August 24, 2017 Grammy Award entry deadline. No firm date for the album’s release has been set at the time of this announcement.

“The “Living In Time” CD project started out basically as an experiment and grew over time, because of everything gelling so well between Mike, Josh, and me,” states Jimmy D Robinson, Billboard charting artist. “I have been producing my poetry into musical art for nearly ten years now with many talented artists. Teaming with A Flock of Seagulls, by far, is the most rewarding and fun experience yet. It is a blessing that the music fans have loved the first singles and are asking for more.”

The “Living In Time” CD is a modern artistic music project conceived by the incomparable American poet Jimmy D Robinson featuring his poetry turned into to song. Produced in conjunction primarily by Score and Robinson with the powerful music flair of international producer Josh Harris, the “Living In Time” recording project began in 2015.

“Jimmy is a brilliant artist and vivid poet. It is exciting to create melodies to his prose, which lends itself well to this music genre,” states Score. “The fans have been really supportive of this new phase for “A Flock of Seagulls” and we’ll start incorporating some of the tracks into our live shows. It will be great to have Jimmy out on stage with us performing our music together. Our collaborative efforts have proven quite magical.”

The “Living In Time” CD will soon spawn it’s next singles “Pedro” and “Things Change,” sometime over the next several months. The tracks will be remixed for dance radio and clubs by well-established producers, such as: Grammy winner Dave Audé, Moto Blanco, Mauro Mozart, Mike Cruz, and more.

“I am pretty excited about the next two singles “Pedro” and “Things Change,” states Jimmy D Robinson. “For “Pedro” we are currently shooting a dreamy music video in several exotic locales. And, for “Things Change,” which is my favorite song thus far, we are considering a couple of great female pop music voices to add to the mix. Nothing is solidified yet though. We’ll keep everyone posted!”

A2IM Teams with Apple Music, iTunes and other Streaming Stations for Independent Music Month

0

Independent artists and their record labels shake up the music world by pushing boundaries, redefining musical styles, and sparking trends that catch fire and ignite the mainstream. A2IM is proud to recognize these artists, record labels, and musical enterprises during their inaugural Independents’ Month.

Running June 5 through July 5, Independents’ Month provides an opportunity for supporters of independent music – from retailers and distributors to media outlets – to shine a spotlight on the labels and artists who blaze trails beyond the roads built by the gatekeepers of the music industry.

“There is a powerful individuality in the entrepreneurs that start and run independent labels, which matches the profound artistic rebellion in the artists they sign,” said Richard James Burgess, CEO of A2IM, “Even the savviest music fans can be surprised at how many of their favorite artists are independent. Independents’ month is an opportunity to highlight these artists and their labels.”

Streaming music companies – one of the essential platforms through which independent artists reach their audience – will play a big part in this year’s celebration. Among the exciting events planned is a feature room in Apple Music and the iTunes Music store. The feature will spotlight Libera Award Nominees and influential independent labels. It will also include independent-focused playlists and essential albums across a wide variety of genres, from Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, Electronic, and Dance to Metal, Latin, Roots, and World Music.

iHeartRadio and Pandora will also highlight independent artists by featuring Libera Awards stations and playlists featuring nominees and honoring the winners.

“We were excited to collaborate with A2IM to launch Independents Month Radio and to help emerging Indie artists reach new listeners,” said Darren Davis, President of iHeartRadio and iHeartMedia Networks Group. “Introducing fans to new music and new artists is core to our business, and we look forward to celebrating the Best of Indie 2017 Libera Awards nominees and winners all month long on iHeartRadio.”

In addition to support from the streaming music community, AIMS (Association of Independent Music Stores) will offer discounts on select independent records throughout the entire month of June.

Independent artists and labels account for more than a third of the U.S. music industry’s market share. A2IM invites anyone involved in creating or supporting independent music to take part in Independents’ Month through discounts or by curating independent-themed programming.

Singer-Songwriter Crystal Bowersox Releases New Live Album, ‘Alive’

0

Singer-songwriter Crystal Bowersox is known for her soulful and distinctive voice and ability to transcend genres across folk-pop, classic rock, soul, blues and country. She displays both on Alive, a live album recorded at the Kitchen Sink Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The album releases today, June 16, and is available on iTunes, Amazon and Apple Music.

Bowersox is known for her ability to experiment with different genres, never falling neatly into one category. Her live set addresses each of her influences, whether through “The Ride,” with its fury of blues-driven energy, “Marlboro Man” and its cinematic look inside an ill-fated love with a wannabe cowboy; the sweet, mandolin-tinged “Mine All Mine,” or the soulful “He Calls Me Angel” and its roadmap to unconditional love. The set closes with Bowersox’s lively take on Kris Kristofferson’s classic “Me & Bobby McGee,” a Bowersox fan favor

When describing the album, Bowersox says it is the trust music she has released to date, thanks in part to the team of musicians comprising the “chosen family” she tours with, their talents spread throughout the album. Bowersox hopes that Alive gives listeners something to take with them on their own journey, so that they, too, can feel truly alive.

Bowersox showcases her “voice like dirt and diamonds,” as one songwriter once put it, on Alive.  She and the album have received early praise from Relix Magazine, The Boot and Cowboys & Indians. Bowersox also visited Paste Magazine for a live session earlier this week.

A northwest Ohio native currently calling Nashville home, Bowersox has built her life around music, a love that developed at an early age. Dead set on a career in music, she moved to Chicago as a teenager, where she performed  on subway platforms and worked odd jobs. She broadened her musical horizons in the city and ultimately auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol. Her time on the show proved to be well spent, as she immediately left the the soundstage for the recording studio. She has since released two LP’s, two EPs,  and several singles. She has also used her talents to benefit several causes close to her heart, and has become an advocate and inspiration for people living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Bowersox is inspired by what’s to come: she says it is what’s in front of her, not what’s behind her, that will define her personal and professional evolution. Alive is certainly a step in the right direction, offering Bowersox’s story of resilience and perseverance in every note.
