Justin Townes Earle signed to New West Records and will return with “Kids In The Street” on May 26

The 12-song set was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit) at his ARC Studios, and is the first time in his career that Earle has worked with an outside producer. Kids In The Street marks a decade into Earle’s recording career and follows “Single Mothers (2014) and “Absent Fathers” (2015).

“Life has changed a lot for me in the last few years,” said Earle, 35. “I got married and am getting ready to become a father, and this is the first record that I’ve written since I’ve been married. There’s definitely an uplifting aspect to this record in a lot of ways, because I’m feeling pretty positive.”

“When I wrote songs in the past, I was looking in on what I was feeling, but this record’s more about looking outward on what’s happening, and writing about subjects like gentrification and inner city strife. This record also has more of a soul influence to it, and it’s got a deeper connection to the blues than anything I’ve done before.”

The album is now available for pre-order via PledgeMusic including a limited edition colored vinyl version of the LP, special 7″ single including “May be A Moment” as well as Earle’s reading of Paul Simon’s “Graceland,” and cassette.

Several of the songs on Kids On The Street reference the lower-middle-class Nashville neighborhoods of Earle’s youth. Earle was the son of Steve Earle. The album is the first of Earle’s not recorded in Nashville. “It’s the first time that I’ve worked outside of my usual umbrella of people to make a record,” Earle said, adding “In Nashville, if you have the right connections, it’ll spoil the shit out of you because you’ve got access to the best musicians in the world and the best studios in the world. If you had told me when I started making records, that I wasn’t gonna make every record in Nashville, I would have told you you were crazy. And if you’d told me that I’d end up making a record in Omaha, I’d tell you you were out of your freaking mind.”

New West Records President John Allen stated about Earle’s signing to the label, “When I first met a young Justin Townes Earle, it was evident then he was intent on following his own artistic path. As his publisher, I saw his songwriting evolve to a literary depth and swagger that maintained that unique vision. New West is very proud to release Justin’s next album of his best work yet.”

Earle will tour this spring with his longtime guitarist Paul Niehaus alongside The Sadies as his backing band (they will also support each show). The full band tour will kick off with Earle’s appearance at this year’s Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Cal. on April 28. Prior to the full band performances, Earle will perform a solo March residency at the Doug Fir Lounge located in his new home of Portland, Ore. as well as two solo, acoustic shows in Georgia.

Women of NASA Will Be An Official LEGO Set Featuring Five Female Pioneers Of Outer Space

Women have played critical roles throughout the history of the U.S. space program, a.k.a. NASA or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Yet in many cases, their contributions are unknown or under-appreciated — especially as women have historically struggled to gain acceptance in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

LEGO announced this week that this proposed set celebrates five notable NASA pioneers and provides an educational building experience to help young ones and adults alike learn about the history of women in STEM, is now a go. The idea took hold almost immediately and then skyrocketed with the popularity of the film Hidden Figures, which tackled the very same subject, made it a done deal. The five Women of NASA are:

Margaret Hamilton, computer scientist: While working at MIT under contract with NASA in the 1960s, Hamilton developed the on-board flight software for the Apollo missions to the moon. She is known for popularizing the modern concept of software.

Katherine Johnson, mathematician and space scientist: A longtime NASA researcher, Johnson is best known for calculating and verifying trajectories for the Mercury and Apollo programs — including the Apollo 11 mission that first landed humans on the moon.

Sally Ride, astronaut, physicist, and educator: A physicist by training, Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983. After retiring as a NASA astronaut, she founded an educational company focusing on encouraging children — especially girls — to pursue the sciences.

Nancy Grace Roman, astronomer: One of the first female executives at NASA, Roman is known to many as the “Mother of Hubble” for her role in planning the Hubble Space Telescope. She also developed NASA’s astronomy research program.

Mae Jemison, astronaut, physician, and entrepreneur: Trained as a medical doctor, Jemison became the first African-American woman in space in 1992. After retiring from NASA, Jemison established a company that develops new technologies and encourages students in the sciences.

In addition to a desktop frame that displays these five minifigures and their names, the set includes vignettes depicting: a famous photo of the reams of code that landed astronauts on the moon in 1969; instruments used to calculate and verify trajectories for the Mercury and Apollo missions; a microscale Hubble Space Telescope and display; and a mini space shuttle, complete with external tank and solid rocket boosters.

The greatest of all consoles is in full working order and will hit the auction block on March 27th for a yet-to-be-disclosed opening bid.  An Abbey Road Studios EMI TG12345 MK IV recording console used between 1971-1983, housed in Studio 2, the console which Pink Floyd used to record their landmark album, The Dark Side of the Moon can now be yours.

Also used by many other artists including Paul McCartney and Wings, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Kate Bush and in later years The Cure, the desk comprising of (takes a deep breath) 40 channels with limiter/compressor on each, 4 echo returns and 16 monitors, MK3 feature cassettes, track monitor cassettes, dual channel 16 track sync mixer, two banks of 12 pairs of microphone channels, 8 pairs of main channels to centre section, monitor level controls for tracks 1-8 on left and 9-16 on right side, Ernest Turner manufactured VU meters comprising 16 full size VU meters and approximately 50 channel VUs, quadrant radial faders by Painton, with approximately 1600 capacitors (many original), housed in the original semi-wrap-around frame made of block board with teak and mahogany veneer, which disassembles into three parts, together with a patchboy of steel encased in industrial standard flight case and made-to-measure freight crates for the console parts (speakers in the illustrated image not included); accompanied by letters concerning the provenance, including one from Ken Townsend, the Abbey Road Studio Manager at the time and future Chairman; a documented history from Brian Gibson, the renowned Studio Technician for Abbey Road and TG console world authority; a current technical appraisal stating the console is in working order; PDF manuals for the equipment; and a copy of the album The Dark Side of the Moon.

Juliana Hatfield Announces New “Pussycat” Record and Upcoming Tour

Boston-based singer-songwriter Juliana Hatfield will be releasing a brand-new record titled Pussycat on April 28th, following the kick-off of a national tour that will start on April 23rd.

“I wasn’t planning on making a record,” says Juliana Hatfield, of her new Pussycat album. In fact, she thought her songwriting career was on hiatus, and that she had nothing left to say in song form; that she had finally said it all after two decades as a recording artist. But then the presidential election happened. “All of these songs just started pouring out of me. And I felt an urgency to record them, to get them down, and get them out there.”

Hatfield produced and played every instrument other than drums-bass, keyboards, guitars, vocals. From start to finish-recording through mixing-the whole thing took a total of just twelve and a half days to complete.

“It was a blur. It was cathartic,” says Hatfield. “I almost don’t even understand what happened in there, or how it came together so smoothly, so quickly. I was there, directing it all, managing it, getting it all done, but I was being swept along by some force that was driving and controlling me. The songs had a will, they forced themselves on me, or out of me, and I did what they told me to do. Even my hands-it felt like they were not my hands. I played bass differently– looser, more confident, better.”

Pussycat comes on the heels of last year’s Hatfield collaboration with Paul Westerberg, the I Don’t Cares’ Wild Stab album, and before that, 2015’s Juliana Hatfield Three (“My Sister”, “Spin The Bottle”) reunion/reformation album, Whatever, My Love (American Laundromat Records)

“I’ve always been prolific and productive and I have a good solid work ethic but this one happened so fast, I didn’t have time to think or plan,” says Hatfield. “I just went with it, rode the wave. And now it is out of my hands. It feels a little scary.”

Pussycat is being released into a very tense, divided and inflamed America. The songs are reflective of that atmosphere – angry (“When You’re A Star”), defiant (“Touch You Again”), but also funny (“Short-Fingered Man”), reflective (“Wonder Why”), and even hopeful (“Impossible Song”), with its chorus of ‘What if we tried to get along/and sing an impossible song’).

The tour will kick off in Hatfield’s hometown of Cambridge, MA then head to Philly, Vienna, Virginia and to NYC’s Mercury Lounge with more national dates to be announced soon.

Multi-platinum-selling singer, songwriter, and musician Sheryl Crow will release a new album, entitled Be Myself, on April 21st via Warner Bros. Records. Be Myself, her ninth studio album and the first album for the label is available for pre-order beginning today. Fans who pre-order the digital format of the album will receive an instant download of the first single, “Halfway There” featuring Gary Clark Jr. on guitar.

A video for “Halfway There” has been created utilizing cut-out animation style which presents the songs lyrical questions through a whimsical Monty Python-esque satirical imagery.

Crow celebrated the announcement of her new album by playing to an absolutely packed house at a rare, surprise club show at West Hollywood’s intimate Troubadour last night where the lucky crowd was treated to a handful of new tracks from Be Myself, along with several fan favorites. She also announced her upcoming tour dates for early summer.

For this album, Crow worked again with producer, musician, and songwriter Jeff Trott, a long-time collaborator throughout her career. Trott co-wrote many of Crow’s classic hits including “If It Makes You Happy” and “My Favorite Mistake.” Crow says her main goal was “to investigate what made my early songs strike people as being authentic and original. So for the first time in my life, I made it a point to sit down and really listen to my old records. I’d drive my kids to school and play the old stuff as I came back home. That helped me remember what it felt like when I was just beginning as an artist. But it wasn’t about repeating myself. It was about revisiting where I came from and seeing where that would take me now.”

“The other thing that makes Be Myself special to me is that it’s really topical,” Crow continues. “This past summer, because of what was going on in the world and particularly in the United States; I began to feel a sense of urgency about writing.” Crow and Trott agreed to enlist their old friend Tchad Blake to engineer and mix the sessions with whom they hadn’t worked with for 18 years, “and we turned out some good old-school Sheryl Crow tunes,” she adds.

Be Myself is like each of her preceding releases: thoughtful and candid. It’s unlike them too, mainly in that it represents contradictory movement — a look at the world today powered in part by a return to the energy that first lofted Crow and her music into the limelight.

An American music icon, Crow has released eight studio albums, which have sold 35 million copies worldwide. Seven of them charted in the Top 10 and five were certified for multi-platinum sales. In addition to such No. 1 hits as “All I Wanna Do,” “Soak Up the Sun,” and “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” Crow has notched 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, Adult Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Mainstream Top 40 and Hot Country Songs charts, with more No. 1 singles in the Triple A listings than any other female artist.

Arkells and Sarah McLachlan Confirmed as Performers forTHE 2017 JUNO AWARDS, April 2

CTV and The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced today that alt-rockers Arkells and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Sarah McLachlan are the next round of performers confirmed for THE 2017 JUNO AWARDS. These artists join previously announced performers, electronic group A Tribe Called Red, 2016 JUNO Award winner and singer-songwriter Alessia Cara, contemporary storyteller Ruth B, multi-platinum singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes, and alt-folk indie group The Strumbellas.

CTV also revealed today that Canada’s most exciting night in music airs live in 4K from the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa on CTV and CTV GO on Sunday, April 2 at 7 p.m. ET (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times).

Four-time JUNO award winner Arkells are nominated for two awards this year, including Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year. The band is returning to the stage as performers for the second time, previously performing at THE 2015 JUNO AWARDS in their hometown of Hamilton, Ont. Throughout McLachlan’s remarkable career, she has received 29 nominations and won 10 JUNO awards. Nominated this year for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year, McLachlan is also being honoured with an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the awards broadcast on CTV.
