Gregory Porter’s NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Is What You Need This Weekend

0

Bob Bolen writes, “Gregory Porter’s healing soul music sends a message of compassion, and he’s got a baritone voice that resonates love. When Porter visited NPR, we’d just learned that our colleague, photojournalist David Gilkey, had been killed while working on a story for NPR in Afghanistan. When Porter began singing the calmly beautiful “No Love Dying,” he may not have known how much it would mean to us. Yet this song of compassion and hope, from his Grammy-winning 2013 album Liquid Spirit, was just what we’d needed.

“Porter and pianist Chip Crawford continued their thoughtful, entrancing set with “Take Me To The Alley” (the title track to Porter’s new album), a song about how we treat and think about those who live on society’s margins. Closing this Tiny Desk concert is “Don’t Be A Fool,” another new song of love, loyalty and trust. For us, Porter’s set provided a timely reminder that we can all use comfort, counsel and guidance — and that music can be serious and heartwarming without losing its sense of wonder and delight.”

Amanda Palmer on the power of music and live performances

0

“Music does a thing that nothing else does. We see it when we’re standing on stage, and when we sign at the end of shows, and we hold people in our arms who cry and weep and say, ‘This song changed my life.’ Music never has to feel less powerful, and I think the way music has changed and the way it’s gotten more commercialized, it doesn’t change the core. If you write a good, powerful song like ‘Glacier,’ or like the songs I’ve written that get into the heart of your listener, it all falls away. Nothing else really matters.” – Amanda Palmer

Vinyl. Album. Cover. Art: The Complete Hipgnosis Catalogue Is A Must For Vinyl Fans

0

The complete, definitive and never-before-published catalogue of Hipgnosis, Vinyl • Album • Cover • Art finally does justice to the work of the most important design collective in music history, which, according to Roddy Bogawa, director of the documentary Taken by Storm (2011), ‘designed half your record collection’.

Founded in 1967 by Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and Peter Christopherson, Hipgnosis gained legendary status in graphic design, transforming the look of album art forever and winning five Grammy nominations for package design. Their revolutionary cover art moved away from the conventional group shots favoured by record companies of the day, resulting in the ground-breaking, often surreal designs which define the albums of many of the biggest names in the history of popular music: 10cc, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, The Police, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Syd Barrett, Throbbing Gristle, T. Rex, Wings, Yes and XTC, to name but a few.

Arranged chronologically, Vinyl • Album • Cover • Art features stunning reproductions of every single Hipgnosis cover – 372 in total – coupled with detailed information by Po and Storm Thorgerson on the artworks and the compelling stories behind their creation. Additional contributions by Peter Gabriel, Marcus Bradbury, and Pentagram’s Harry Pearce provide engrossing insights into the way these incredible artworks came into being; place the covers in context; and reflect on their enduring impact on album design. A highly accessible stand-alone volume, Vinyl • Album • Cover • Art will also make the perfect pop partner to the groundbreaking Hipgnosis | Portraits (2014) with its rare revelations and behind-the-scenes photography.

Over 20 Frank Zappa Releases Arrive On CD This Month

0

March 24 might as well be declared Frank Zappa Day. On that date, retailers are reporting that Zappa Records and UMe will unveil CD reissues of more than twenty Zappa titles from his storied discography.  These posthumous releases from the late composer-bandleader were previously available as limited edition mail order/online exclusives from Vaulternative and Zappa Records between 1994 and 2015, and drew upon his vast archive of previously unheard material from both the studio and the concert stage.

Among these offerings from the prolific artist are compilations, audio documentaries for classic albums Freak Out! (The MOFO Project Object) and Cruising with Ruben and the Jets (Greasy Love Songs) and classic live performances from varying line-ups over the years in which Zappa was joined by Flo and Eddie, George Duke, Peter Wolf, Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, and numerous other renowned musicians and singers.  Full track listings for every title as well as personnel and credits can be found in the discography at Zappa’s official website.

Brian May Announces New ‘Golden Days’ LP With Broadway Star Kerry Ellis

0

Brian May has collaborated with British singer and West End and Broadway star Kerry Ellis on a second album.

Golden Days consists of five original songs and eight covers, including Gary Moore’s “Parisienne Walkways” and the show tune “If I Loved You.”

May says the album is “a true collaboration between Kerry and myself. Five years ago, (the first album) Anthems was the result of me producing an exciting new artist – Kerry Ellis. This new record has both our names on it, and breaks new ground. We produced ourselves together as a team. I feel confident it’s the best thing we’ve ever done and a worthy testament to 13 years of belief. It also happens to feature Britain’s most beautiful voice!”

Golden Days will be out on April 7th.

Roger Waters Sets Street Date Of May 19 For “Is This the Life We Really Want” Album

0

Roger Waters has confirmed a release date for Is This the Life We Really Want. His new studio album, the first in 25 years, is due on May 19. The date was revealed as part of a new teaser video for the project, which you can watch below. Featured in the clip are new shots of Waters collaborating in the studio with producer Nigel Godrich, and sets up his massive world tour quite nicely. Is This the Life We Really Want will be Waters’ fourth rock-focused album since splitting with Pink Floyd after 1983’s The Final Cut. The most recent was 1992’s Amused to Death, winning the Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards

Fans shouldn’t expect Pink Floyd to reform, either.

Justin Townes Earle signed to New West Records and will return with “Kids In The Street” on May 26

0

The 12-song set was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit) at his ARC Studios, and is the first time in his career that Earle has worked with an outside producer. Kids In The Street marks a decade into Earle’s recording career and follows “Single Mothers (2014) and “Absent Fathers” (2015).

“Life has changed a lot for me in the last few years,” said Earle, 35. “I got married and am getting ready to become a father, and this is the first record that I’ve written since I’ve been married. There’s definitely an uplifting aspect to this record in a lot of ways, because I’m feeling pretty positive.”

“When I wrote songs in the past, I was looking in on what I was feeling, but this record’s more about looking outward on what’s happening, and writing about subjects like gentrification and inner city strife. This record also has more of a soul influence to it, and it’s got a deeper connection to the blues than anything I’ve done before.”

The album is now available for pre-order via PledgeMusic including a limited edition colored vinyl version of the LP, special 7″ single including “May be A Moment” as well as Earle’s reading of Paul Simon’s “Graceland,” and cassette.

Several of the songs on Kids On The Street reference the lower-middle-class Nashville neighborhoods of Earle’s youth. Earle was the son of Steve Earle. The album is the first of Earle’s not recorded in Nashville. “It’s the first time that I’ve worked outside of my usual umbrella of people to make a record,” Earle said, adding “In Nashville, if you have the right connections, it’ll spoil the shit out of you because you’ve got access to the best musicians in the world and the best studios in the world. If you had told me when I started making records, that I wasn’t gonna make every record in Nashville, I would have told you you were crazy. And if you’d told me that I’d end up making a record in Omaha, I’d tell you you were out of your freaking mind.”

New West Records President John Allen stated about Earle’s signing to the label, “When I first met a young Justin Townes Earle, it was evident then he was intent on following his own artistic path. As his publisher, I saw his songwriting evolve to a literary depth and swagger that maintained that unique vision. New West is very proud to release Justin’s next album of his best work yet.”

The track listing is:
1. Champagne Corolla
2. May be A Moment
3. What’s She Crying For
4. 15-25
5. Kids In The Street
6. Faded Valentine
7. What’s Goin’ Wrong
8. Short Hair Woman
9. Same Old Stagolee
10. If I Was The Devil

Earle will tour this spring with his longtime guitarist Paul Niehaus alongside The Sadies as his backing band (they will also support each show). Women of NASA Will Be An Official LEGO Set Featuring Five Female Pioneers Of Outer Space

0

Women have played critical roles throughout the history of the U.S. space program, a.k.a. NASA or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Yet in many cases, their contributions are unknown or under-appreciated — especially as women have historically struggled to gain acceptance in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

LEGO announced this week that this proposed set celebrates five notable NASA pioneers and provides an educational building experience to help young ones and adults alike learn about the history of women in STEM, is now a go. The idea took hold almost immediately and then skyrocketed with the popularity of the film Hidden Figures, which tackled the very same subject, made it a done deal. The five Women of NASA are:

Margaret Hamilton, computer scientist: While working at MIT under contract with NASA in the 1960s, Hamilton developed the on-board flight software for the Apollo missions to the moon. She is known for popularizing the modern concept of software.

Katherine Johnson, mathematician and space scientist: A longtime NASA researcher, Johnson is best known for calculating and verifying trajectories for the Mercury and Apollo programs — including the Apollo 11 mission that first landed humans on the moon.

Sally Ride, astronaut, physicist, and educator: A physicist by training, Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983. After retiring as a NASA astronaut, she founded an educational company focusing on encouraging children — especially girls — to pursue the sciences.

Nancy Grace Roman, astronomer: One of the first female executives at NASA, Roman is known to many as the “Mother of Hubble” for her role in planning the Hubble Space Telescope. She also developed NASA’s astronomy research program.

Mae Jemison, astronaut, physician, and entrepreneur: Trained as a medical doctor, Jemison became the first African-American woman in space in 1992. After retiring from NASA, Jemison established a company that develops new technologies and encourages students in the sciences.

In addition to a desktop frame that displays these five minifigures and their names, the set includes vignettes depicting: a famous photo of the reams of code that landed astronauts on the moon in 1969; instruments used to calculate and verify trajectories for the Mercury and Apollo missions; a microscale Hubble Space Telescope and display; and a mini space shuttle, complete with external tank and solid rocket boosters.
