SXSW Music Announces Rap-A-Lot Records’ Bun B And James A. Prince As Keynote Speakers

0

The South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) is pleased to announce its second Keynote Speaker, James A. Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records. Mr. Prince’s Keynote conversation with Rap-A-Lot artist Bun B will take place Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Ballroom D of the Austin Convention Center.

James A. Prince is the founder and CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records and is the pioneering spirit behind the Houston-based, multi-million dollar record label. Founded in 1986, Mr. Prince started Rap-A-Lot in part as an incentive to keep a group of neighborhood teenagers in school and off the streets of Houston’s notorious 5th Ward. His desire to help these youth stay in school launched what would eventually become the platinum-selling group Geto Boys. The creation of Rap-A-Lot and the Geto Boys was the beginning of the ascent of southern Hip Hop.

The label produced numerous hit albums and singles, accumulated over two-dozen Gold and Platinum records that include artists like the Geto Boys, Scarface, Do or Die, Big Mike, Bun B, Tela, Devin the Dude, Zero, and many more artists.

Mr. Prince has negotiated numerous distribution deals for Rap-A-Lot with Virgin Records, EMI, Asylum (Warner), Fontana (Universal) and most recently Red (Sony). More recently, he partnered with his son, Jas Prince to discover Hip Hop superstar Drake and took him from performing on MySpace, to being one of the most recognizable musical artists of this generation.

J. Prince will be interviewed by rapper Bun B, who got his start as half of the iconic southern rap duo UGK alongside the late Pimp C. Bun has gone on to build a fruitful solo career, most recently releasing Trill OG: The Epilogue on Rap-A-Lot in 2013. Bun B has made forays into areas outside of music, most notably as a guest lecturer at Rice University and the release of Bun B’s Rap Coloring Book in 2013.

Mr. Prince’s Keynote is in addition to Tony Visconti’s previously announced appearance. More will be announced in the near future. These Keynotes will be a highlight among the many conference sessions designed to offer registrants unique learning and networking opportunities. For more information on conference sessions, please go here.

The South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival is a six-day event held every March in Austin, Texas. The conference offers unmatched access to ideas and global viewpoints on an increasingly borderless industry. It aims to educate and inspire musicians and professionals alike, with sessions attended by over 30,000 registrants and showcasing artists. A large multi-industry trade show exhibition, Music Gear Expo and daytime stage performances round out the day while evenings are devoted to the SXSW Music Festival, which showcases 2,000 acts ranging from the unsigned to the iconic. The 30th annual event takes place March 15 – 20, 2016. For more information, please visit sxsw.com. To register for the event, please visit sxsw.com/attend.

This Andy Warhol/Velvet Underground Record Player Is The Greatest Thing I’ve Ever Seen

0

Want. Very. Badly. It can be yours for $2,100 from this Esty dealer, who says:

I bought this record player because the time to buy something you have never seen is when you see it. And I am a huge Warhol fan. At the time, I could find no information on this. A friend was able to find this old advertising for it in an old Speigel catalog. In searching the internet, there are only 2 of these known. There is one in Indianapolis that a guy has from his youth- a present from his grandmother. The other one is in the Banana Museum in California. I even wrote to the Warhol Foundation to find out if there was any kind of affiliation, but they had never heard anything about this and had no record. They came up with the same information I did. Mine is not perfect, it shows wear and I cannot determine if the black markings on this have been redone or if they are original- looking at the picture in the ad, it is still hard to tell, but they look rough to me. I still love this. It runs properly at all 3 speeds, but it will need a needle. The cord is in good condition and the case locks as it should. The ad touts that this will play in any position, even upside-down, but I would not suggest such a thing, as it cannot be good for your records.

Headbangers In Their Natural Element

0

The new book Headbangers is a collection of Danish photographer Jacob Ehrbahn’s intimate portraits of the beauty and chaos of heavy metal rockers in the throes of musical ecstasy taken at European metal festivals such as Denmark’s Copenhell, Germany’s Wacken Open Air, and Sweden’s Metaltown. Heavy metal fans go totally berserk when listening to their music. Some shake their heads violently from side to side and back and forth, while others go all in and flail their entire bodies in time to the blast beats. In this collection Ehrbahn’s camera stops time and captures the surprising and life-affirming moments when the headbangers abandon all semblance of vanity and surrender to the rhythm. Ehrbahn transports us to an intimate world disconnected from time and space—a universe where it’s possible to transcend the frenzy and enter an altered state that brings calm, joy, and relief.

It’s Official, As If You Needed More Proof. Adele Is #1 Global Recording Artist

0

Adele has been named by IFPI as the most popular recording artist across the globe in 2015, reflecting the phenomenal success of her record-breaking third album, 25.

The singer/songwriter is the third recipient of the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year award, a unique accolade that reflects an artist’s worldwide popularity across physical formats, downloads and streams.

Adele’s success at the top of the chart was driven by the October release and subsequent phenomenal global success of lead single Hello from the album. The track was number one in more than 30 countries worldwide, including the US, Germany, France, Italy, Australia and the UK.

Adele’s album 25 followed in November and to date has notched up worldwide sales of over 15 million.

Commenting on today’s award, IFPI chief executive Frances Moore said: “I’m delighted to be able to honour Adele as the most popular global recording artist of 2015. Her album 25 has been the runaway global sensation of the year, breaking records across the world and reaching a vast audience of fans. All of the artists in our top 10 chart have achieved incredible success – and Adele’s achievement is simply phenomenal.”

IFPI’s Global Recording Artist award and top 10 chart is the first and only ranking to accurately capture the popularity of artists across streaming channels, alongside digital and physical album and singles sales on a global basis. Recipients in 2013 and 2014, respectively, were One Direction and Taylor Swift.

Of the top 10 artists featuring in IFPI’s 2015 global chart, Ed Sheeran took second place, one up from the third spot he occupied on the 2014 ranking. The singer/songwriter, who released his second studio album x in June 2014, sold out Wembley stadium in the UK on three consecutive nights in summer 2015. He also had a high profile in 2015 with a busy schedule of touring, award wins and personal appearances, whilst launching his very own record label, Gingerbread Man Records, an imprint of Atlantic Records UK.

In February 2015, Sheeran received the award for British Male Solo Artist and the top accolade for British Album of the Year for x at the 2015 BRIT Awards and in May picked up an Ivor Novello Award for songwriter of the year. He also co-hosted the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards in October and ended the year as Spotify’s most streamed act of all time (overtaking Eminem) with more than three billion streams, including more than 59 million listens in 2015 alone. In third place this year was Taylor Swift, who was the recipient of the 2014 IFPI Global Recording Artist award. Swift had a phenomenally busy year with her October 2014 release 1989 continuing to dominate the worldwide charts in 2015 after notching up 1.3 million sales in the first week of release in the US alone. The album subsequently went on to sell 5.5 million copies by the end of 2015 in the US.

In early 2015 Swift released a deluxe version of 1989, which had been exclusively launched the previous year at Target and, in May, she began the massive 85-date 1989 World Tour. By the time the tour, which featured guests including Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd, ended in December 2015 it had become the highest grossing tour of the year. Justin Bieber took the fourth spot and One Direction (recipients of the 2013 Global Recording Artist award) were placed fifth.

All Aboard For The Cutest Mini-Train Ever

Whenever I talk about what makes a video go viral, I usually say make the audience either laugh, cry or get angry. I should just say fill up a mini-train full of cute dogs, and watch the hits pile up.

Texas Famous reports that a man in Fort Worth, Texas frequently takes his pack of dogs on a mini-train ride around town.
