No Surrender: Country Crooner Angie Bohlke Takes Quitting Off The Table With “Don’t Give In”

0

Every once in a while, you need to hear a friend say, “Just keep going.” Would that they could all do it with the priceless gift for melody Canadian country upstart Angie Bohlke brings to the subject on “Don’t Give In,” a musical wellspring of support that’s the latest single from her debut album, The Best Part of Me.

It’s impossible to remain unswayed by Bohlke’s sincerity as she implores a loved on to persevere and vows the result will be worth it. Imparting thoughtful coping strategies like “trust in yourself” and “think of something beautiful; a place you’ve never been,” she makes the emotional stakes plain on the song’s absolute haymaker of a chorus:

Don’t, don’t give up
Don’t give in
You will make it
Don’t give up, don’t give in
You will win, just reach for my hand
I will understand, but don’t give in

The exquisite balladry plays out at a stately pace, affording maximum breathing room for Bohlke to show off her impeccable tone, sustain and vibrato. That’s not to mention the clearly heartfelt quality of the words—which, like those on the rest of the album, reflect a period of personal growth in her own life that paid off in spades thanks to a determination to keep going at all costs.

“I, like many others, have struggled not only mentally but also emotionally,” Bohlke says. Among the many challenges she’s faced, she cites single motherhood and “coming to terms with my own sexuality” as merely two. But with the passage of time, she says, “I grew increasingly more aware of who I was. I focused more on my own needs and desires.”
And then?

“I found someone who helped me find my true self. I found true love. I found my strength. I found my way.”

This is clearly not someone who’s afraid to play the long game. And it’s been that way for Bohlke on the musical front too. Raised in Placentia, NL, she was performing in school and community concerts at a young age, taking her inspiration from musical muses like Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless and Kenny Rogers. Playing in cover bands was the next logical step. But writing her own songs remained purely a private exercise for a great many years—something she did to help her work through life’s ceaseless ups and downs.

That all changed when COVID hit in 2020, and she realized the secret stash of tunes she had amassed would make perfect fodder for a weekly series of Facebook concerts. Playing live every Saturday to the lockdown crowd exploded her reach on social media and put her career on an unmistakably upward trajectory.

“It was simply amazing,” she reflects. “The fan base that started to follow me has been supporting me ever since.”

The foundation was thus laid for Bohlke to release her first single, “True Love,” on Bandcamp the same year. She followed it in 2022 with the more widely disseminated “The One I Hold at Night,” then “Just One Look” in 2023. The capper was when her first full-length collection, the seven-song The Best Part of Me, dropped last November.

“The album comes just at the right time in my life when I am finally ready to share my experiences through my music,” Bohlke says. “From being in a dark place, to being a single mom, to not knowing who I truly was, to finally finding someone who somehow just put everything into perspective. And finally all the scattered pieces just fell into place.
“I think this album really is the best part of me.”

Along her path of self-actualization, she’s been able to seize a bunch of ancillary opportunities, like performing at the Live at Heart NL Global Music Showcase Sweden and participating in a province-wide tour of Newfoundland and Labrador arts and culture centres. She’s also been featured in the Voices of Placentia Songwriters Series. That’s all pretty good for someone who had sat on her original material for a decade—and the true yearnings of her heart for a good while longer. So when she says “Don’t Give In,” you can be sure she knows whereof she speaks.

Afropop Singer ADEOLUWA Rediscovers Love With New Single “Jeje” From New ‘For The Fourth’ EP

0

Finding new love after experiencing heartbreak can be both thrilling and exciting. No one knows this more than Oyo, Ibadan, Nigeria-born, Montreal-based Afropop singer ADEOLUWA. Following the heartbreak displayed on his previous EP “Kings of Detours”, ADEOLUWA returns with his julibant new EP “For The Fourth” and the single “Jeje”.

Steady drums, soothing background vocals, and a sprinkle of trumpet open the song as ADEOLUWA sings the first verse. The drums enhance the silky, steadfast tone of ADEOLUWA’s vocals as he tries to woo a new lover. When the chorus comes in, the chanted chorus combines with the horns, drums, and background vocals from earlier to create a sensual mood.

As the song continues, it builds on ADEOLUWA’s romantic lyrics and soulful vocals before climaxing into a rapturous soundscape of chants and horns, complemented by ADEOLUWA’s vocals and the background vocals from Itohan Agbator and Kelechi Prince synergizing together.

In fact, “Jeje” does its job as the lead single to the EP “For The Fourth” by serving as a tantalizing glimpse into the EP’s sonic landscape. Its infectious rhythm and soulful lyrics are a testament to ADEOLUWA’s ability to transport listeners to a world of love and celebration.

ADEOLUWA is a Nigerian-born Afro-fusion pop star with a unique genre-bending style, drawing inspiration from artists like Adekunle Gold, Stephen Schwartz, Jonathan McReynolds, and ASA. Based in Saskatchewan, he became known for his experimental soundscape and captivating live performance.

ADEOLUWA debuted in 2019 with his first album After Bells and Whistles. During that same year, the single “Escape” served as the opening act to the Saskatchewan Music Awards, which would receive airplay on numerous radio stations.

From there, ADEOLUWA would release a string of singles, EPs, and albums, including 2019’s live album Selections of The ADEOLUWA Experience, 2023’s album A Night At The Artisan, and 2024’s EP King of Detours. In 2023, he received an Afrobeats Artist Of The Year nomination at the Saskatchewan Music Awards and performed at BreakOut West in Kelowna last year, culminating with a prestige placement on Spotify’s Editorial New Music Playlist.

The popularity of Afrobeats has soared in the global music scene in recent years. This genre has crossed borders and fascinated audiences worldwide with its catchy rhythms and captivating melodies and has become a significant presence, not just on the radio but also at music festivals worldwide. ADEOLUWA’s rise represents more than just a part of the musical trend; it’s a celebration of African culture, resilience, and artistic innovation.

“For The Fourth” gets released on the first day of ADEOLUWA’s first solo tour – “For The King Of Detours.”

Turkish-British R&B Artist Onur Sevigen Captures The Push-Pull of Two Cultures and Ambivalent Love in “My Way”

0

Having a foot in two cultures can sometimes feel like being torn between two lovers, and never getting any satisfaction. Turkish-British alternative artist Onur Sevigen tackles this conundrum in his sensual, suspenseful, and cinematic new single “My Way” – available now.

Fusing R&B, hip hop, and a falsetto rivaling Prince, “My Way” is percussive and passionate and perfectly captures a spirit in conflict.

“Growing up the son of immigrant parents packs on more challenges than one’s average coming of age story,” Onur explains. “Trying to navigate relationships, life, ambitions and also not belonging fully to either country is almost like being bisexual and not ever fully experiencing what it is to love both sexes, or at least being repressed in a way by society to choose one or the other.”

Yet the difficulty becomes particularly tangible when the narrator of “My Way” meets a young woman whilst trying to navigate the push-pull of his two cultures:

You give me something
You want that sweet life
But I just keep on running from nothing

Still on the road,
East boy west boy
Ain’t got a home
Wish it was simple
Wish I could know
But when I see you

Can’t lose my way

Previously known for his indie electronica/Brit pop sound, in his upcoming songs Onur showcases both eastern and western sonics mixed with bilingual lyrics. These new songs reflect both eastern and western cultures and Onur’s unique place within and between the two. He introduces eastern instruments like darbuka, davul and clarinet to blend eastern sound with his unique western style.

“It was important for me to use middle eastern instruments because this story originates from that geography and it only makes sense that so should the music,” he explains. “What drives my music has always been rhythm. And I wanted to combine my western sensibilities of production with my new-found superpower, the Darbuka!”

Hailing from London, ONUR does it all. At 25 years old, the British alternative R&B artist is not only a singer but also a songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Shared with the world for the first time in 2018, his sound can be described as broken beats, soulful chords, and guitar fuzz, combined with yesterday’s dusty drums and tomorrow’s sounds and samples. With a falsetto reminiscent of Prince and intricate grooves not too dissimilar to Michael Jackson, ONUR is a hybrid of heroes who is pushing the envelope in the world of British R&B – a recipe that already brought him many fans, including in the music industry.

Blackened Whiskey Releases 2024 Edition Of Rye The Lightning Inspired By Metallica

0

Today, award-winning BLACKENED Whiskey announces the release of the 2024 edition of Rye the Lightning, inspired by Metallica’s 6x platinum sophomore album, Ride the Lightning. This limited-edition expression follows the highly acclaimed 2022 edition of Rye The Lightning, which received Gold from the John Barleycorn Awards, Best Finished Whiskey from Breaking Bourbon, a 93 rating from Whisky Advocate, and was awarded the #14 spot on Whisky Advocate’s 2022 Top 20 Most Exciting Whiskies of the World. Given the overwhelmingly positive response, BLACKENED Master Distiller & Blender Rob Dietrich sought to bottle lightning again with this latest iteration.

The 2024 edition of Rye The Lightning is crafted from a blend of straight rye whiskeys hand-selected by Dietrich. The whiskeys are vatted and transferred for finishing to Madeira wine and Caribbean rum casks for 2-14 weeks each, where they undergo BLACKENED’s proprietary BLACK NOISE sonic-enhancement process. Rye The Lightning is non-chill filtered and bottled at 92 proof. The result is notes of green apple, barn hay, caramel, and banana bread on the nose with pear, honeysuckle, muscovado, almond, cinnamon, sawn-wood, and waffle cone on the palate.

“When we launched the first edition of Rye The Lightning in 2022, I knew we had something special,” said Master Distiller & Blender Rob Dietrich. “I absolutely love the hay spice and dark earthy notes in American rye whiskey, so it was an adventure to play around with a creative flavor profile through cask finishing. I was thrilled that consumers loved this whiskey as much as we did, and with this limited release, I tried to capture some of the innovative magic of the first expression, but with a slightly new spin by upping the proof a couple of notches, while applying non-chill filtering and using a rye with a different mash bill with different types of Madeira and Rum finishes.”

The makers of BLACKENED Whiskey sonically enhance their whiskeys to extract more flavor from the casks, using a proprietary scientific process co-developed by the sound engineers at Meyer Sound, a global leader in sound technology. Dubbed Black Noise, this sonic-enhancement process produces low hertz sound waves causing the whiskey to reverberate at a fast rate, interacting with the oak staves of the barrel, measurably releasing wood compounds and flavors.

“They say that lightning never strikes twice, but the second release of Rye The Lightning proves otherwise,” said Metallica’s lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett. “Rob captured the spirit of our ‘Ride The Lightning’ album with the award-winning first batch. And now with the 2024 edition, we are excited to take our fans on that ‘Ride’ once again.”

Rye The Lightning is available now with an SRP of $69.99. To order online, find local retailers, or for more information, visit BLACKENED Whiskey’s website www.BlackenedWhiskey.com

At this year’s festival, Goodwill is embracing diversity and inclusivity in fashion by partnering with mannequin maker, Greneker, whose founder, Lillian Greneker redefined the mannequin and visual merchandising industry 94 years ago. Fauntleroy, a Goodwill aficionado and avid thrifter, will provide insight into his career and work in empowering individuals to reimagine their world by adding new ideas to old items. James and Goodwill representatives will discuss their partnership, past projects, and upcoming music initiatives.

Visitors to The Coachella Art Studios can also use sustainable supplies in fun and creative ways and walk away with a custom, one-of-a-kind item. “The Coachella Art Studios is an immersive space for festival goers to explore their creativity. Bud Light Canada Presents The Buckle Up Tour: Bringing Country Music To Small-Town Bars, Headlined By Owen Riegling

2

Today, Bud Light Canada announced the Buckle Up Tour featuring rising Canadian country music star, Owen Riegling. The free tour, which is being produced by Live Nation Canada, will kick off on May 6th, 2024, making 12 stops in small-town country bars across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Building on its deep roots in creating exceptional live music experiences as a frequent festival sponsor and creator of the Bud Light House Party Tour, the Buckle Up Tour, presented by Bud Light and powered by Live Nation Canada, aligns with the brand’s focus on engaging country-music fans.

“Country music was born in small towns, but as artists grow in their careers it often leads them to big stages in big cities,” said Andrew Oosterhuis, Vice President of Marketing, Labatt Breweries of Canada. “Given this insight, Bud Light wanted to find an authentic way to bring country music home to small-town country bars for Canadians to enjoy.”

Budding country music star and Mildmay, Ontario native, Owen Riegling, started his career playing in his hometown’s bars. Recently, he won the 2022 Emerging Artist Showcase at the Canadian country music festival Boots & Hearts. The prize, part of a partnership with Universal Music Canada, led to the release of his debut single and a record deal with the country’s leading music company. Owen has been playing live ever since, touring as the opening act for established country artists including Tyler Hubbard – all part of his notable upward trajectory in the Canadian country music scene.

“A few years ago, I wrote a song inspired by Bud Light titled, Bud Light The Way,” said Universal Music Canada artist Owen Riegling. “With the release of this track finally coming to all major streaming platforms, it’s a dream come true to have Bud Light Canada be a part of this experience and supporting the country music scene. I can’t wait to visit small-town bars across the country – including my hometown of Mildmay – playing free shows to fans and hopefully finding some new fans along the way.”

“Owen has rapidly been gaining recognition on some of Canada’s biggest stages, but his very public desire to stay connected to his hometown is one of the reasons he was the perfect artist to collaborate with for this tour,” said Oosterhuis. “Layering in his personal connection to our brand and writing a song inspired by Bud Light further confirmed his natural fit to this campaign.”

The Buckle Up Tour, presented by Bud Light and powered by Live Nation Canada, will make 12 stops throughout the month of May in Fort McMurray, Banff, Blairmore, Saskatoon, Brandon, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, Embrun, Brantford, Chatham and a final homecoming show for Owen in Mildmay. Each stop will include a unique opening performance by a local musician.

Free tickets for each of the 12 shows will be available beginning Friday, April 12, at 10 a.m. local time at BuckleUpTour.ca. Tickets will be available on a first come, first serve basis, with a limit of two tickets per customer. Tickets cannot be resold and orders will be voided if tickets are found being resold online. A limited number of free tickets will be available at the door on the night of each show, subject to venue capacity. Individuals attending the event grant permission for Bud Light, Owen Riegling and its representatives to use photography and video content captured at each venue in future communications, and collateral.
