Bahamas Announces Long-Awaited North American Tour

Juno Award-winning artist Bahamas (aka Afie Jurvanen) has announced a long-awaited North American tour in support of his latest album Sad Hunk (Brushfire Records). Upon release, Sad Hunk was very well-received by fans and the press, with positive coverage running in The New York Times, MOJO, American Songwriter, Glide, Atwood Magazine and Uncut, who called the album “arrestingly original”. Bahamas performed songs from the album on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS Saturday Morning and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s #PlayAtHome series. Bahamas recently won the 2021 Juno Award for Best Adult Alternative Album for Sad Hunk.

The headlining tour kicks off on October 2nd in Louisville, KY immediately following dates supporting Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. Stops will include Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit before heading back to Canada for a coast-to-coast tour of his home country. A Bahamas show is an immersive experience, and fans have been anxiously waiting for the return of Jurvanen and company’s live signature blend of music, musicianship, artist/audience connection and even humor. This past weekend, the finale of Bahamas’ beloved Live To Tape online video performance series debuted. The session featured drummer Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), bassist Nathan East (Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder) and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Madison Cunningham.

The Live To Tape series featured Jurvanen performing from Halifax, Nova Scotia with an eclectic group of celebrated artists playing with him remotely live from various locations. Artists included Lucius, The Secret Sisters, The 400 Unit, members of Dawes, Australia’s Teskey Brothers, Greensky Bluegrass, Gus Seyffert (Beck, Adele) and Joey Waronker (REM, Atoms for Peace), Bob Glaub (Jackson Browne, Rod Stewart) and Russ Kunkle (Jackson Browne, Lyle Lovett), legendary Nashville session players Gene Chrisman, Russ Pahl, Dave Roe and a host of others.

“Summertime, and the bidding is easy”—with over 400 items spanning the history of popular music, RR Auction’s summer installment of our Marvels of Modern Music series is sure to be a hit. From the Beatles and Bob Dylan to Prince, Kurt Cobain, and Lady Gaga, icons of the past and present are represented in this sale.

Among the many chart-topping items is a fully signed Meet the Beatles promo album. The album is signed and inscribed on the back cover to George Harrison’s older sister Louise. Beatle’s albums inscribed to one of their family members are virtually nonexistent and hugely desirable.

Prince’s stage-worn lace shirt from the Purple Rain Tour. The long-sleeve shirt from the blockbuster 1984-85 Purple Rain Tour, gorgeously constructed entirely of sheer lace with a vine-and-leaf pattern, featuring a high-neck collar, three layers of ruffles on the chest, pearloid buttons down the front placket, and ruffled faux-French cuffs with stunning sewn-on blue jeweled cufflinks.

Also up are the handwritten lyrics for Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U.’ From the collection of Prince’s assistant Therese Stoulil and is accompanied by a letter of provenance, stating that months which reads, in part: “After 10 years of working for Prince, I resigned in May of 1996. And it was months after that there was a knock on my door, and I looked out the bedroom window and saw a black BMW in my driveway and immediately recognized it as Duane’s, Prince’s half-brother. I went downstairs opened the door, and he only said ‘this is from Prince’ then he got in his car and left. Once I realized what Duane delivered, I was both stunned and humbled. Prince would use white console marking tape to adhere the lyrics to his vocal microphone; that tape is still on both pages.” ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ was featured as the sixth track on The Family’s 1985 self-titled debut album. Five years later, the song became a best-selling hit when Irish singer Sinead O’Connor covered the song for her second studio album.

Among other Prince, lots included: An exquisite beaded jacket worn on-screen by Prince in Under the Cherry Moon, Prince studio-played Fender Acoustic Guitar for the Diamonds and Pearls album, Prince stage-worn Gold’ Jam of the Year Tour’ Outfit.

Autograph lyrics for ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ by Bob Dylan. The immensely desirable one-page handwritten lyrics for Dylan’s breakthrough single, “Like a Rolling Stone,” on The Dorchester of London letterhead, signed neatly at the conclusion, “Bob Dylan, 2010.” Accompanied by a 2013 letter of authenticity from Jeff Rosen, president of the Bob Dylan Music Company, which states that to the best of his knowledge, there are only five of the manuscripts known to exist for the song as of the date of this letter.

And an Eddie Van Halen’s stage-used Charvel guitar. The EVH Art Series electric guitar with yellow and black stripe pattern played during a Van Halen concert at the Scottrade Center by Eddie Van Halen, who has personally hand-striped the body and signed in silver ink.

Among other fan favorites; Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love’s personally-worn dresses, Lady Gaga’s personally-worn black satin dress by Alexa Chapman, Rihanna’s personally-worn Paris Fashion Week ‘Fear’ shawl, and a Beret worn by Harry Styles for his Variety ‘Hitmaker of the Year’ photo shoot.

In 1973, while Roxy Music – one of the most unique, influential, and important bands of their generation – were still riding the cusp of a wave, frontman Bryan Ferry launched an audacious solo career that went on to cement him as one of the greatest and unique performers and songwriters the U.K. has ever produced.

His first six solo albums, These Foolish Things (1973), Another Time, Another Place (1974), Let’s Stick Together (1976), In Your Mind (1977), The Bride Stripped Bare (1978) and Boys and Girls (1985) have been remastered from original tapes at Abbey Road Studios and cut by Frank Arkwright. All six releases are pressed on 180g black vinyl and feature enhanced versions of the original artwork overseen by Bryan Ferry.

Bryan Ferry’s solo work has shaped the course of contemporary rock and pop music. Through classic love songs such as “Don’t Stop The Dance” and “Slave To Love,” from 1985’s Boys and Girls, and his work across a range of musical styles from filmic electronic soundscapes to recreations of New Orleans and Weimar jazz bands, Ferry has continually affirmed his position as a musical icon.

Aside from his own compositions, an equally important aspect of Ferry’s work has been his re-styling of numerous songs from different genres. The first of these was the ground-breaking and critically acclaimed (and to be reissued album) These Foolish Things. From unique renditions of Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party” and The Miracles’ “The Tracks of My Tears,” to astounding versions of Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and The Beach Boys’ “Don’t Worry Baby,” These Foolish Things has (The New) Rolling Stone Album Guide giving it five out of five stars and describing it as a “conceptual and musical tour de force.”

With the rare distinction of being regarded as both classic and contemporary, Bryan Ferry is acknowledged as the writer and singer of some of the most loved modern pop songs, and a driving force in the avant-garde.

Lorde Returns With “Solar Power” Album and Announces 2022 World Tour

In a surprise move, GRAMMY Award-winning multiplatinum artist LORDE released new song “Solar Power.” The song, which appropriately dropped timed to the only solar eclipse of the year, came alongside the announcement of her highly anticipated third studio album of the same name, Solar Power. Today the artist additionally revealed the album release date as August 20th and announced her 2022 World tour dates. “Solar Power” debuted to fan and critical acclaim, with Billboard stating, “Solar Power” is a fresh chapter in a riveting book, and Lorde fans should be thrilled to meet this new author.” The Guardian called the song, “… a distinct reinvention, one that gleefully puts a gap between Lorde and everyone else in terms of her creativity” while noting, “Lorde’s comeback single is a lesson in letting pop stars take their time.” Since its debut last week, the song has garnered five star reviews from places like NME and Pitchfork, has trended #1 worldwide across social media, raked in over 30 million streams in it’s first five days, and was #1 on Spotify’s Global and US Song Debut.  The song is the first single from Lorde’s forthcoming third studio album which will be released via Universal Music New Zealand on August 20th. The album includes 12 tracks and is produced by Jack Antonoff who she collaborated with on her chart-topping last album, Melodrama.

Today, Vancouver-bred alt-hip-hop newcomer Boslen shares his latest single, a hard-hitting and hypnotic track called “QUARTZ.” Featuring Zimbabwe-born rapper Charmaine, “QUARTZ” is the third single released from Boslen’s forthcoming debut album DUSK to DAWN, due out later this year.

Produced by justsayin, Stoopid Lou, and Dalton, “Quartz” is the latest offering from a fast-rising artist with a proven track record of boldly defying genre boundaries. This time around, the 22-year-old phenomenon delivers one of his most formidable tracks to date, showing the full force of his commanding vocals and expert wordplay (“Never needed/No coke/Or pills/Or fat lines/Jokes on you I’m too high…I got the dopamine in my mind”). As “Quartz” unfolds in sinister textures and brilliantly warped beats, Charmaine slides in and shows off the fiercely magnetic vocal presence previously glimpsed on her unstoppable debut single “BOLD.”

Revealing his passionate refusal to stay in one lane, “Quartz” marks a major departure from Boslen’s recent single “DENY (feat. Switchfoot Announces New Album ‘Interrobang’ Out August 20

GRAMMY Award-winning rock band, Switchfoot, confirmed their new album, interrobang, will be released on August 20, 2021 via Fantasy Records. interrobang is the follow up to 2018’s Native Tongue, and last year’s Covers EP. The band also shared the sparkling new track, fluorescent, the second song from interrobang, following the recently release, i need you (to be wrong).

Brimming with child-like imagination and a futuristic mindset, Switchfoot reaches a bold new creative peak on interrobang, the 12th full-length album of the multi-platinum selling rock band’s 20+ year career. Working with producer, Tony Berg (Paul McCartney, Phoebe Bridgers, Andrew Bird) at both Sound City studio in Van Nuys, CA and the band’s own studio in Carlsbad, CA, Switchfoot: Jon Foreman, Tim Foreman, Chad Butler, Jerome Fontamillas, and Drew Shirley recorded the album in a burst of pent-up mid-pandemic creativity throughout last year and into 2021. Fearlessly marrying 60’s experimentalism and synth-driven new wave swagger, the band pushed past its comfort zones and retooled its sound.

“More than ever, we want our music to be a bridge, reaching out with melody and lyrics to sing an honest song for anyone who’s got ears to hear,” says Switchfoot frontman, Jon Foreman. “interrobang is an album that celebrates the journey, even when the arrival is unsure. interrobang is the sound of joy and pain, faith and doubt against the backdrop of the strangest, most difficult year we’ve ever experienced.”

An absorbing series of sharply drawn short stories underscored by a dizzying array of textures both vintage and modern, interrobang’s themes of alienation and self-reflection are amplified by the record’s inventive use of density and dynamics. Credit veteran mixer Tchad Blake (Arctic Monkeys, Fiona Apple) with aiding the album’s three-dimensional sound.

Interro is derived from “interrogation point,” the technical name for the question mark, and bang is printers’ slang for the exclamation point. Seeking freedom from the broken promises and failed expectations of 21st century America, on interrobang Switchfoot takes the listener on a twisty, surprising technicolour ride, all the while asking hard questions with eyes wide open.

Majid Jordan Drops Summery New Single “Been Through That” On OVO Sound

Today, Majid Jordan releases “Been Through That” on OVO Sound, an exhilarating song that arrives just in time for the first days of summer. Rich with upbeat synths, empathetic lyrics, and infectious melody, the song evokes sunshine and celebration, a fitting aesthetic for a time when people can finally go outside.

Sliding into the lush instrumental, Majid Jordan starts things off imagining brighter days: “Sunrise lifting you up when it all seems down / Radio, play this song til it’s all played out.” The hook offers a catchy exploration of connection and romance. “Sometimes, when you drink too much, you still call when it’s late / I’ve been through that,” Majid Al Maskati sings. “Days when you think it’s love, feel like it might be an act / I’ve been through that.” The lyrics aren’t directed at one particular person, however. As the duo explains, it’s more universal than that.

“Although it sounds like we’re addressing someone in the verse, the truth is we have been both the speaker and listener in all the situations that the song talks about,” Majid Jordan says via statement. “We have been through that, overstretched ourselves, gotten burnt out, acted for the wrong reasons, but we eventually found our feet and now we’re dancing our way out of it.”

“Been Through That” is a follow-up to “Waves of Blue,” a glittering new single that dropped in April. Featuring disarmingly tender lyrics and nostalgic, new wave-tinged R&B production, the track provides all the genre-defying dynamics and lyrical sincerity fans have come to expect of the duo, whose last album, The Space Between, dropped in 2017. Praised for its blend of retro pop aesthetics and lucid songwriting, the LP was a memorable glimpse of the duo at their best. But new singles like “Been Through That” show Majid Jordan is continuing to evolve, making the introspective emotion that’s drawn in fans over the years even more vivid and vibrant. It’s the sort of perception-expanding single that makes you believe their best is still yet to come.
