Music Canada launches research study on equity, diversity & inclusion in Canada’s music industry

0

Music Canada, in collaboration with the Diversity Institute at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management, is releasing a survey as part of a new and first-of-its kind research study on equity, diversity and inclusion in Canada’s music industry. Artists, creators, and music industry professionals are encouraged to participate in the national and bilingual survey linked at https://musiccanada.com/diversity-inclusion-survey-2021?mc_cid=772e9bed57&mc_eid=UNIQID.

The survey and the broader research study intends to identify diversity and inclusion gaps within the music industry and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and barriers to success of diverse artists, creators and music professionals in the Canadian music industry.

“Equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the centre of Music Canada’s core values, and we are committed to advancing these both internally in our organization and in the broader music community,” Jennifer M. Sloan, Board Chair of Music Canada. “By consulting the Canadian music community, working collaboratively with the Diversity Institute and with music sector leaders to identify and address barriers, we can meaningfully gain ground together to create a more inclusive music industry in Canada.”

“This survey is part of Music Canada and our members’ commitment to the values of equity, diversity and inclusion within the music community,” says Patrick Rogers, CEO of Music Canada. “By working with subject matter experts at the Diversity Institute, we will be able to gather actionable information relating to Canada’s music industry.”

“In order to address systemic barriers and challenges to success in our industry, we need to consult directly with individuals throughout Canada’s music community to understand their experiences,” says Jackie Dean, COO of Music Canada. “This research will help us develop a deeper understanding of those experiences in order to help create a better music ecosystem for all.”

The Diversity Institute has over two decades of proven experience in developing equity, diversity and inclusion strategies and activities that can better support individuals, organizations and corporations, and society at large. Diversity and inclusion sectoral research is a primary area of research for the Institute. A wide range of diverse music industry partners were consulted on the survey, including ADVANCE, Canada’s Black Music Business Collective; Women in Music Canada; the Canadian Country Music Association and others. It has also been shared with Music Canada’s Advisory Council Members in recognition of their expertise from across the Canadian music community.

“ADVANCE wants to ensure an equitable, diverse and inclusive music industry,” said Keziah Myers, Executive Director, ADVANCE, Canada’s Black Music Business Collective. “In efforts that advocate for the Black community, ADVANCE has collaborated with Music Canada in a new research study focusing on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Canada’s Music Industry. This study will examine the Canadian music industry to identify enablers, challenges and barriers to success. We encourage all of ADVANCE’s members, audiences and supporters to take part in this brief, anonymous online survey. Adding your perspective will help identify diversity and inclusion gaps in the sector, and move towards positive systemic change.”

“The Canadian Country Music Association is committed to making the values of equity, diversity and inclusion an integral part of our culture,” said Tracy Martin, President, Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA). “This new research study will help our sector gain a deeper understanding of how sustained action in support of these values can better serve the music community. I encourage all CCMA members to add their perspective by completing this brief, anonymous survey, which will help identify diversity and inclusion gaps in Canada’s music sector.”

“Women in Music is happy to support this crucial research, which will help inform the creation of policies improve industry practices,” said Samantha Slattery, Chair and Founder, Women in Music Canada (WIMC).

May Pang Presents John Lennon’s Lost Weekend Experience, The “Walls and Bridges” NFT Collection

0

Liquid Avatar Technologies Inc.ImagineAR Inc.McCartney Multimedia Inc. and Oasis Digital Studios proudly announce a truly historical collaboration, revealing new, never-before-seen photos of Rock Legend, John Lennon, that drops for viewing today, as part of an exclusive group of 15 limited edition photographic and animated NFTs with AR enhancements, that recount the original inspiration of John’s Walls and Bridges album cover art.  Music enthusiasts and John Lennon fans will be able to purchase these NFTs in two special offerings, as original format, variations, and cinematics, starting May 19th, gaining digital ownership of a representation of a very personal time in his life. Most of these photos have never been seen publicly before and have been preserved as part of music history.

“I’m proud to share these portraits of John, which became the inspiration for the Walls and Bridges album artwork as NFTs, allowing music fans and collectors the opportunity to own a piece of music history,” said May Pang, artist, and ex-partner of John Lennon. “I have kept them in my personal collection for almost 50 years and I am excited to present them in this new and innovative form. I know that John, a man of music and art who was always well ahead of his time, would have been excited to experience the emergence of NFTs.”

This commemorative moment is made possible through Oasis Digital Studios. A preview of the collection has been made available, as of Sunday, May 9th, marking John’s affinity for the number 9 at https://oasisdigitalstudios.com/nft-marketplace/

The album cover for Walls and Bridges featured some of John Lennon’s childhood drawings, including one portraying a game of football, specifically the goal scored by George Robledo in the 1952 FA Cup Final. That drawing also featured Newcastle United’s number 9, Jackie Milburn; as a child, John lived at 9 Newcastle Road and it, along with his birth date, October 9th, fueled a lifelong fascination with that number. The album also features a series of photos of Lennon’s face with different expressions. The front cover contained two flaps which, when folded, created several interchangeable “Lennon faces,” some of them silly.  This is where May came in.

While discussing the creation of the album cover, John and May had an idea.  They went up to the rooftop of the Record Plant Studios where he was recording at 321 W. 44th Street in NYC, and she started to take fun and candid photographs of John with her Nikon 35mm camera, capturing the playful essence that was the true John Lennon.

When the photos were developed, which you see now on the official landing page for the sale of these images as NFTs, they were well-received, but the 35mm format was not the right size for the album design requirements, and unlike digital images today, nothing could be done to change that back in 1974.

New photographs were taken by photographer Bob Gruen, based on the concept and designs that John and May created and the final art for the album was credited to Capitol’s in-house designer Roy Kohara. May’s photographs of John are a combination of works done both at the Record Plant Studios and John and May’s home rooftop.

In September 1973, while separated from 2nd wife Yoko, John and May Pang left New York for Los Angeles to promote Mind Games and began an 18-month relationship, which John affectionately and publicly referred to this period of his life as his “Lost Weekend.”

While there, John embarked on a recording project — a collaboration with Phil Spector, to record and produce an album of the old rock ‘n’ roll songs that inspired John to become a musician.  The album, Rock ‘n’ Roll, was ultimately completed in New York using the same musicians he used on Walls and Bridges.

Walls and Bridges was John’s fifth studio album and captured his mindset and feelings in the midst of the “Lost Weekend.” The album was released by Apple Records on September 26, 1974 in the United States and on October 4, 1974 in the United KingdomWalls and Bridges was an American #1 album in all three trade papers, BillboardCashbox and Record World and included two hit singles, “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” which hit #1 and was John’s first and only number-one hit as a solo artist in his lifetime and “#9 Dream” which fittingly peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #23 on the British singles chart.

The Walls and Bridges album was certified gold in the US and silver in the UK.  As a surprise from John, May was awarded an RIAA, Recording Industry Association of America Gold Record for her contributions to the album.

Spinal Tap Creators Urge Drive-Ins And Other Would-Be Exhibitors Seek Licences Prior To Advertising Screenings Of Iconic Film

0

ob Reiner, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean, the creators of the iconic mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap, are strongly encouraging anyone who is advertising upcoming public showings of the ground-breaking comedy film to secure a licensing agreement before moving ahead with their plans.

The four co-creators of the film are pleased to see positive signs in the movie world as we all begin to emerge from the Covid crisis. But drive-in cinemas or other entrepreneurs advertising showings of the film that then proceed without a licensing arrangement will be considered unauthorized, and may be subject to a legal response.

The four co-creators announced earlier this year that they established a wholly owned entity to manage the licensing of the film and all rights related to it. The four creators, Reiner, Shearer, Guest and McKean have been in sole control of the film’s rights since 1st January 2021.

New licensing arrangements, now handled exclusively by Authorized Spinal Tap LLC, apply not only to the much-beloved movie and all of its featured characters, but also to trademarks and all associated rights.

Director Rob Reiner said, “We love that audiences still have such affection for the film. Since the beginning of 2021, we have been in the process of wrapping our arms around the task of completely managing an artwork that has maintained its stature and influence over nearly four decades.”

That influence lives on, as evidenced by Time Out London once again naming This is Spinal Tap as the “Number One” comedy film ever produced, on its annual list of the “100 Best Comedy Movies” (January, 2021). Upcoming plans in the U.S. and Australia for showings at drive-ins theaters, in particular, are no surprise.

“Simply put, please don’t advertise a showing of the film without approaching us for a licensing agreement,” said Harry Shearer. “The mechanics and economics of we four creators’ managing the film’s rights demand that we have full knowledge of, and give our approval to, all future showings of This is Spinal Tap, no matter when they occur, or the size or location of the venue.

“We are making this request as the four individuals who created this iconic film,” said Michael McKean. “It’s time everyone involved was properly recognized, and we can only accomplish that by seeing to it that public showings and performances are licensed and equitably compensated.”

Christopher Guest added “There is a rich creative and management ecosystem behind This is Spinal Tap, and everything the film has come to represent for millions of fans worldwide. We are now dedicating ourselves to managing how the film is distributed worldwide, so that existing and new fans will have the opportunity to enjoy it.”

Spinal Tap band members David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls were unavailable for comment, but were said to be watching developments unfold with great interest, as they plot and plan their next creative endeavors with enthusiasm and with renewed energy (given their ages).

The motion picture, This is Spinal Tap has become a cult classic since its first theatrical run 37 years ago. The film was produced independently on a shoestring budget of (US) $2.25 million, by a company owned by the four creators, Reiner, Guest, McKean and Shearer. Two years in production, the film was released in 1984. It soon became a cult favourite and spawned a genre that has come to be known as “mockumentary”, inspiring many subsequent filmmakers. Phrases from the film’s script have entered the general lexicon (including “none more black”, “it goes to 11”), the latter phrase exemplified by the Tesla car, whose audio system’s volume control goes to 11, as does that on the BBC’s iPlayer.

Its reputation as one of the 20th Century’s most enduring comedies has increased exponentially in the ensuing years. The film has garnered international praise and acclaim, having been included in “best ever” lists such as The New York Times Guide to the Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made; Total Film’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time list; Entertainment Weekly’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time where it appeared on the “Just Too Beloved to Ignore” list; and achieving the coveted Number One spot on Time Out London’s 100 Best Comedy Movies list in 2021. In 2002, the film’s lasting appeal led the US Library of Congress (the world’s largest cultural collection), to designate it as a culturally, historically or aesthetically significant film.

Although This Is Spinal Tap was first released in 1984 in the US and UK, the band “Spinal Tap” was actually created in the late 1970s. The band’s rock musician characters “Nigel Tufnel” and “David St. Hubbins” were created by Christopher Guest and Michael McKean with Harry Shearer creating bassist “Derek Smalls.” Spinal Tap’s comedic sole claim to fame was as “one of England’s loudest bands.” Performing as their beloved stage personae in the company of a rotating cast of percussionists willing to risk the kit (as so many of their predecessors have been accident prone), Spinal Tap has toured the world multiple times since the film’s release. Hundreds of thousands of Spinal Tap sound recordings have been sold over the ensuing decades and the film has been released on scores of video formats through the years.

In 2019, the band’s creators concluded a new agreement with Universal Music Group. The band’s recording of a full-length Spinal Tap album featuring songs from the film is still available for physical sale, download and streaming today from UMG.

Often called one of the greatest songs ever written and as the Beach Boys’ finest record, God Only Knows from Pet Sounds and produced by Brian Wilson, is a wonder to behold. Brian enlisted about twenty session musicians who variously played drums, sleigh bells, plastic orange juice cups, clarinets, flutes, strings, French horn, accordion, guitars, upright bass, harpsichord, and a tack piano with its strings taped. In this video, he breaks down the song with Beatles’ producer George Martin.

Seth Rogen To Launch Original Podcast Series With SiriusXM’s Stitcher

0

SiriusXM announced today that writer, producer, director, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Seth Rogen will launch his first podcast with Stitcher, the pioneering podcast company and SiriusXM subsidiary. Rogen’s podcast, a series of personal stories produced with a rich sound design, is expected to debut later this year.

Each week, Rogen will indulge his endless curiosity about people and the world we live in by inviting a range of guests to share a single story – whether hilarious, harrowing or heartwarming – and bring it to life through rhythmic editing, as supporting interviews and archival tape are woven in alongside a tuneful sound design and score.

The as-yet-untitled project will be available via Stitcher’s comedy podcast network, Earwolf, home to popular and award-winning shows Office LadiesConan O’Brien Needs a FriendScam GoddessHow Did This Get Made? and Comedy Bang! Bang!.

Rogen’s new podcast is being developed and produced by Richard Parks III, who will edit the stories and add his signature approach to sound design and music, which can also be heard on Richard’s Famous Food Podcast, and in Parks’ collaborations with The Flaming Lips, McSweeney’s, and KCRW. Frida Perez and Earwolf’s Colin Anderson will serve as Executive Producers. Additional support comes from Earwolf’s Associate Producer Renee Colvert, Senior Producer Josh Richmond, and Managing Producer Amelia Chappelow.

“Recording and editing these episodes has been a thrilling and rewarding experience,” Rogen said. “Bringing people’s stories to life in these sort of ‘audio documentaries’ has given me amazing insight into what makes up the most impactful moments in people’s lives and how they contextualize these moments. I think Frida, Richard and I have been able to do something that even I am shocked by: produce what seems like an original podcast.”

“Richard’s journalistic track record, leftfield sense of humor, and propensity for wildly creative audio made him the perfect producer to realize Seth’s vision” says Colin Anderson, Vice President of Comedy at Stitcher. “Together, they’ve created something truly unique, which feels right at home at Earwolf.”

“We are very excited Seth wants to bring this series to life at Stitcher and SiriusXM,” said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer of SiriusXM. “The vision Seth and his team have is to venture beyond typical celebrity-based podcasts, and that is to go deep into how a single moment can change a person’s life. We’ve seen over his career that Seth is unafraid to explore new territory, and so we are excited to follow him on this journey of discovery.”

The show will be available on Stitcher, SiriusXM’s mobile app, Pandora, and all major podcast listening platforms.

0

The Bob Dylan Center will open on May 10, 2022, welcoming visitors from around the world to access and interact with more than 100,000 exclusive cultural treasures found in The Bob Dylan Archive. These include handwritten lyric manuscripts to some of the world’s most treasured songs, previously unreleased recordings, never-before-seen film performances, rare and unseen photographs, visual art and other priceless items spanning Bob Dylan’s unparalleled seven decades as one of the world’s most important cultural figures.

Located in Tulsa’s burgeoning arts district just steps from the city’s renowned Woody Guthrie Center, The Bob Dylan Center is being designed by renowned architectural and exhibit design firm Olson Kundig, led by design principal Alan Maskin. The BDC will feature cutting-edge and immersive technology in a multimedia environment that is designed to be as impressive and revealing to visitors new to Dylan’s work as it will be to long-time fans and afficianados.

Among the many highlights that will be found at The Bob Dylan Center are:

  • An ever-evolving curated display of elements that illuminate the depth and breadth of the Bob Dylan Archive collection.
  • An immersive film experience that will initiate visitors through an innovative cascade of archival music and film, directed by renowned Dylan chronicler Jennifer Lebeau.
  • A recreation of an authentic studio environment where visitors will experience what it was like to be present at one of Dylan’s historic recording sessions.
  • The Columbia Records Gallery, which will provide an in-depth look at the creation, performance and production of timeless Dylan songs such as “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Tangled Up in Blue” and “Chimes of Freedom.”
  • A screening room that will showcase Dylan-related scripted films, documentaries and concert performances, including never-before-seen material unearthed from the Archive.
  • A multimedia timeline of Dylan’s life from his early years in Minnesota through the present day, written by award-winning historian Sean Wilentz.
  • The Parker Brothers Gallery, which will explore the creative process through the work of other innovative artists, in an initial exhibit curated by influential author Lewis Hyde

One sterling example of the treasures to be found in The Bob Dylan Archive is a recording of Dylan performing “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” in the autumn of 1962. This heretofore-unknown recording was made by Milton (Mell) and Lillian Bailey, friends and early champions of the young Bob Dylan when he was a fixture in New York’s Greenwich Village folk scene. This version of the song, recorded in the Baileys’ apartment at 185 East 3rd St., features alternate lyrics and is the earliest known recording of the song that was eventually released in 1963 on The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. The song can be downloaded at https://bit.ly/3ycz9X1 courtesy of The Bob Dylan Center.

Another example is a recently unearthed image of Bob Dylan on stage during his 1974 tour with The Band, taken by renowned photographer Barry Feinstein. That photo can be downloaded at https://bit.ly/3ycz9X1, also courtesy of The Bob Dylan Center.

59 Productions, world-leading specialists in design for stage and live events (including the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the record-breaking David Bowie Is exhibition and the decor concept design for The Met Ball), is collaborating with Olson Kundig on the exhibition design and media development.

“In revealing the existence of The Bob Dylan Archive to the public in 2016, Ben Sisario wrote in The New York Times, “It is clear that the archives are deeper and more vast than even most Dylan experts could imagine, promising untold insight into the songwriter’s work.”

The three-story façade of The Bob Dylan Center will face downtown Tulsa’s hugely popular public gathering space, Guthrie Green, and will depict a rare 1965 image of Dylan, donated to the center by renowned photographer Jerry Schatzberg.
