0

Grammy-winning artist Maren Morris will embark on “RSVP: The Tour” throughout North America, including festival dates at Governors Ball Music Festival and Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Experience and headline stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Colorado’s storied Red Rocks Amphitheatre and many more. Supporting acts James Arthur, Ryan Hurd and Caitlyn Smith are confirmed for select dates. The tour kicks off in June following Maren’s headlining appearance at the Houston Rodeo on March 7, her biggest show to date.

Last week marked the second consecutive week at #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart for Maren’s song “The Bones,” making it the first solo female back-to-back #1 since 2012 and her fourth #1 single to date. It also marks the first solo female Billboard country #1 since her single “GIRL” topped the chart last summer. In addition, Morris recently appeared on the 50th season of “Sesame Street” in an episode titled “Let’s Draw.”

2019 was a monumental year for the singer songwriter who took home Album of the Year at the 53rd Annual Country Music Association Awards, where she was the most nominated artist. Her record shattering album GIRL continues to receive widespread critical praise—Variety hailed it as “the best as well as most important mainstream country-star album of the year.” GIRL was also featured amongst the Best of 2019 by Rolling Stone, Billboard, Esquire, GQ, People, Vice, Paste, Stereogum and Uproxx.

Jimi Hendrix’s Landmark Final Album, ‘Band Of Gypsys,’ Celebrated With Remastered 50th Anniversary Vinyl Editions

0

Jimi Hendrix’s immortal 1970 live album, Band of Gypsys, is one of his most influential releases, with the charismatic guitar icon testing the bounds of his creative approach to produce some of the most ambitious music of his career. Capitol/UMe will honor this landmark record on March 27, almost exactly 50 years from its original release, with special 50th anniversary vinyl editions of Band of Gypsys that recapture the album’s boundary-breaking spirit.

This new, all analog edition of Band of Gypsys has been mastered from the original analog stereo tapes by longtime Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer and will be pressed on 180-gram audiophile black vinyl by Quality Record Pressings, along with a limited color pressing on 180-gram translucent cream, red, yellow and green swirl vinyl. The unique color vinyl edition will be available exclusively through AuthenticHendrix.com. All editions of the Band of Gypsys 50th anniversary LP will be packaged with an eight-page booklet filled with rare images from the concerts and an essay by John McDermott. This special edition will feature a 24″ x 36″ replica of Capitol Records’ original promotional Band of Gypsys poster.

“This is more than the commemoration of an anniversary,” said Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix, “that, of course, is something momentous, but it is also the celebration of a cathartic event in Jimi’s life…a sort of changing of the guards. He demonstrated that there was no limit to his musical landscape. It was broad and beautiful, and like the leader of a true band of gypsies, Jimi could go anywhere on the spectrum of genres and be at home there musically!  This is our way of celebrating that part of Jimi’s journey.”

As the 1960s drew to a close, Hendrix was at the apex of his fame and influence. His first three albums with The Jimi Hendrix Experience—Are You ExperiencedAxis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland—had established him as both a musical visionary and an international superstar. By the end of the decade, though, Hendrix was looking for new musical challenges and feeling the need to work with new collaborators. Towards that end, he assembled the Band of Gypsys lineup, with bassist Billy Cox, an old friend from Hendrix’s early days playing in R&B combos, and drummer Buddy Miles, already well known for his work with the Electric Flag and the Buddy Miles Express. The resulting album is a revolutionary fusion of blues, funk and rock that stands as a unique chapter in Hendrix’s seminal body of work.

Beyond Hendrix’s meteoric growth as a musician and composer, the guitarist was hamstrung by a lawsuit whose roots drew back to 1965 when Hendrix was an unknown sideman and occasional studio musician. Hendrix contributed guitar to a series of recordings for the R&B group Curtis Knight & the Squires. Despite having already signed an exclusive recording contract the previous July with Sue Records, Hendrix inexplicably signed a one-page artist agreement with PPX Industries which bound his services not just for the Knight sessions but for a period of three years. Two 45rpm singles from these studio recordings were licensed by PPX Industries in early 1966 to RSVP Records, a small, New York based independent label. Neither record made any commercial impact and Hendrix and Knight quickly went their separate ways. These recordings and the one-page agreement with PPX [for which Hendrix received one dollar] were still in effect after he achieved international recognition. In direct competition against Hendrix albums such as Are You ExperiencedGet That Feeling, a collection of recordings from the sessions Hendrix had recorded with Curtis Knight was released. Following litigation, in 1968 a settlement required Hendrix to deliver an album of original material to Capitol Records for distribution.

Recalls Billy Cox, “There had been a lawsuit against him and the only way out of that was to give them something. Jimi came to me and explained what had happened. Then it was decided to give them an album. I said let’s go for it. At that time Mitch was in England, but Buddy would frequent the studios with us and he decided the same thing; lets help our friend in need. Ultimately we became the Band of Gypsys.” Band of Gypsys was recorded by legendary remote recording engineer Wally Heider during two historic performances at New York’s Fillmore East on New Year’s Day 1970. “Who Knows” and “Machine Gun” were drawn from the 1/1/70 first show while the remaining four songs which make up the album’s second side were recorded during the 1/1/70 last show.

The album encompasses six then-unreleased songs, with the searing original blues “Machine Gun”—an anti-war epic performed by two musicians in Hendrix and Cox who had actually served in the US Army coupled with such powerful numbers as “Message to Love,” “Power of Soul,” each documenting Hendrix’s decisive shift in musical direction, laying the groundwork for many of the funk rock experiments that would follow in the decades to come. In their original 1970 review of the record, Rolling Stone declared, “This album is Hendrix the musician. With just bass and drum support he is able to transfuse and transfix on the strength of his guitar-work alone.” 50 years on, Band of Gypsys continues to inspire and influence generations of musicians while its significance has only grown critically. In their retrospective reviews of the album, Ultimate Classic Rock enthused, “no testimonial can do justice to Hendrix’s revelatory fretwork, especially on ‘Machine Gun,’ which continues to define the sonic possibilities of the electric guitar” while All Music hailed it as “not only an important part of the Hendrix legacy, but one of the greatest live albums ever.”

Originally released in America on March 25, 1970Band of Gypsys peaked at #5 during a 61-week run on the Billboard album chart. At the time of his death in September 1970, it was Hendrix’s bestselling U.S. album since Are You Experienced. The last album that Hendrix released during his lifetime, Band of Gypsys offers a tantalizing glimpse at what might have been.

My Next Read: ‘Any Night of the Week A D.I.Y. History of Toronto Music, 1957-2001’ by Jonny Dovercourt

0

The story of Toronto’s massive influence on popular music, from an indie/DIY community-based perspective. Part civic history and part memoir from this veteran scene-builder and co-founder of the acclaimed Wavelength concert series, Any Night of the Week charts the evolution of Toronto’s diverse independent music scene in the latter half of the 20th century. From the Yorkville and Yonge Street scenes that spawned Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and The Band in the sixties, through to the hip-hop, indie rock, and electronica-laden nineties, with acts like Broken Social Scene, Maestro Fresh-Wes, and Peaches, Dovercourt tells the story of how key venues, neighbourhoods, artists and promoters laid the groundwork for this provincial outpost to grow into a music mecca.

The book is set to arrive March 17 through Coach House Books.

Singer/Songwriting Sisters Caardia Caution Against Cell Phone and Social Media Dependency in New Video “The Deep End”

0

Toronto alt pop singer/songwriters Caardia caution the dangers of cell phone and social media dependency in their newest single and video, “The Deep End” — available now.

The second single — and the title track — from their critically acclaimed debut EP, The Deep End, sisters Celia and Annie Siriopoulos penned the song with producer Ryan Guay and Erik Van Wissen.

“‘The Deep End’ is about the dependency people have on cell phones in society today,” Celia offers on the song’s origin.

“And the false reality they create for themselves,” Annie adds.

For the song, the Siriopoulos sisters were keen to shine a light on the issue by stressing the importance of wrongly-represented realities and false intimacies of relationships — no matter the context — through a screen. The pair spare no allusive punches staking claim to the severity of the situation, playing out real relationships fragmenting and handcuffs attached to cell phones.

“Not only do people depend on social media, but they fall so far into this false reality that they are unable to escape,” Annie continues. “The video is a visual experience symbolizing how lost and vulnerable people become.”

“Mental illness can commonly be a result of this,” Celia considers. “People find themselves in the deep end, following individuals everywhere, leading no escape back to the surface… Back to reality.”

Their latest release, “Walking Away” — co-written, recorded and produced by multi-Platinum and JUNO Award winner Chris Perry — equally displayed the duo’s ability and interest in leveraging their songwriting skills to tackle social flash points.

The notions are very much part of the sisters’ cause du coeur; in the few spare moments not centred on their own music, they are co-founders and co-organizers of Youth Jam TO, an annual music festival in Toronto hosting 2,500+ attendees, as well as were in-demand public speakers with ‘Kill It With Kindness,’ an anti-bullying initiative. In addition, they were recently featured in a book highlighting social activists, called Awaken Your Inner Hero.

For Caardia, they are the recipients of both CBC Searchlight’s Top 50 Judge’s Choice (for the second year in a row) and the York Region Celebration of the Arts Bursary for vocals, have been seen, heard and heralded on CBC, SiriusXM, Global, CJLO, CP24, CTV, Rogers TV, Girls’ World Magazine, and more — as well as Canadian Indie Week and annually at the Distillery District’s Toronto Christmas Market.

“The Deep End” and its namesake EP are available now.

CMW Honours Groundbreaking Female Music Exec Debra Rathwell With Canadian Music Industry Hall Fame Induction

0

Canadian Music Week today announced that Debra Rathwell, Executive VP, Global Touring & Talent at AEG Presents, will be inducted into the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. Debra will be honoured for her remarkable career in the music industry at the annual Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards Gala at Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto on Thursday, May 21, 2020. She will also give a Keynote Interview prior to the Awards as part of the Canadian Music Week Music Summit at the Sheraton Centre.

Debra Rathwell is the Executive Vice President of Global Touring and Talent at AEG Presents, one of the world’s largest producers and promoters of live tours and music events. Debra is one of the most respected and admired professionals in the music industry, as well as being one of the highest-ranking female executives working on the live side of the business today.

After attending Carleton University in Ottawa, Debra began her career in that city as Executive Assistant to Canadian music legend Harvey Glatt at his full service music companies, Treble Clef and Bass Clef. She also counts Harold Levin and the late Howard Lapides as mentors during her time there; the support and guidance the two provided helped her rise to Concert Manager at the company.

In 1982, Debra moved to Montreal to join Donald K Donald Productions, that city’s leading concert promoter, as the company’s first Vice President. She was soon after promoted to Senior Vice President, managing a staff of 20. During her tenure DKD promoted shows by Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, The Who, David Bowie, Madonna, Rush, and Celine Dion, among many others. Under Debra’s direction, DKD produced five musicals that have been brought to Broadway, including “Tango Argentino”, “Flamenco Puro” and the Tony Award winning “Black and Blue,” in addition to countless events, and presenting approximately 300 concerts each year. Other signature projects under her auspices were “The Moscow Circus”, “Torvill and Dean,” and “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber”.

1994 brought yet another move, this time to the States, when Debra accepted the position of Senior Vice President at New York’s Metropolitan Entertainment. Under her guidance, the company’s concert division presented the biggest names in rock and pop music — including the Woodstock anniversary concerts of 1994 and 1999 — while the touring division presented successful outings from artists including Whitney Houston and Sarah Brightman, and created concept tours such as “Down From the Mountain”, “Family Values” and “Up in Smoke”.

She joined AEG’s concert division to open its New York office in January 2003 — heading up a small team of eight to focus on both one-off shows and tours — overseeing a territory running from the Carolinas to Eastern Canada. She lent her leadership and vision to the launch of the American Idol tour franchise, and followed that with a string of successes in the “television meets live event” sphere: Dancing With the Stars, America’s Got Talent, and So You Think You Can Dance, to name a few. The company’s success brought growth and change: the staff grew to 45 and focused its strength on its touring business. The newly-christened AEG Presents became the exclusive touring company for artists such as Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, The Who, John Mellencamp, Miley Cyrus, JoJo Siwa, Shania Twain, and many others. More growth and expansion soon followed in New York as AEG Presents formed a partnership with promoters Bowery Presents, further broadening the concert division’s presence. Simultaneously, AEG Presents’ entire touring division was renamed Global Touring and became a standalone entity existing side-by-side with concert promotion, with a group of talented Senior Vice Presidents — Debra among them — in charge of the touring agenda. Her recent promotion to Executive Vice President has given her an expanded role across artist development and global tour strategy. It’s a roster that includes not only the aforementioned artists, but also Maggie Rogers, Lauren Daigle, Dan + Shay, Luke Combs, Hugh Jackman, Tame Impala, and Tyler, The Creator to name a few.

Today, Debra’s current focus is orchestrating the “Elton John: Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour”, launching arena and stadium dates with Justin Bieber, working the last 50 dates of a 150-show worldwide tour for JoJo Siwa, and putting up a number of “too soon to talk about” tours slated for late 2020 and 2021.

Canadian Music Week will return to Toronto May 19 – 23, 2020.

Now in its 38th year, Canadian Music Week is Canada’s leading annual entertainment event dedicated to the expression and growth of the country’s music, media and entertainment industries. Combining multifaceted information-intensive conferences; a trade exposition; awards shows and the nation’s largest new music festival which spans five nights of performances, with hundreds of showcasing bands at more than 40 live music venues in downtown Toronto. All conference functions take place at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, 123 Queen Street West in Toronto.

Award-winning Musician and Producer Steve Dawson Announces The Black Hen Roadshow Vol. 4

0

The acclaimed Black Hen Roadshow is back, and better than ever! Coming to stages across Canada in the spring of 2020, this fourth incarnation of the travelling revue features a stellar line-up of artists and promises an evening of unique collaborations and musical entertainment, cementing the Roadshow as an exemplary touring showcase of contemporary roots music.

Steve Dawson and his Black Hen label need no introduction to Canadian roots music fans. A musician’s musician in the truest sense, Dawson is both a highly sought-after producer, and an in-demand sideman and session player, with his unique voice on the slide guitar, pedal steel and more. Currently residing in Nashville, Dawson owns and operates The Henhouse Studio and Black Hen Music, now entering its 21st year. Lately Steve has been recording and working on projects with Matt Andersen, Birds of Chicago, and Big Dave McLean to name but a few of his many collaborators. Known for bringing the best out in everyone he works with; the multiple Juno Award winner and renowned guitar slinger couldn’t be more excited about taking this incredible group of musicians on the road. “Each of these powerhouse performers has their own unique artistic voice and having them all together on stage at once is guaranteed to be a breath-taking phenomenon.”

Oh Susanna has a voice that can pierce a heart of stone. Her superbly crafted songs tell stories of troubled souls who rebel against their circumstances to attain a quiet dignity. She writes of love and longing, joys and pain, simple feelings and strong passions, thereby revealing our beautifully flawed human hearts. Performing since 1996, Oh Susanna has released eight critically acclaimed and award-winning albums. This year marks the 20th anniversary of her folk-noir full-length debut Johnstown.

Stephen Fearing’s music is a mesmerizing blend of roots, folk and pop. Co-founder of Canadian roots-rock supergroup Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, he is an alluring songwriter—an insightful chronicler of life’s journeys—and a master guitarist who continues to tour and delight audiences throughout North America, the UK and Europe. A multiple Juno Award winner, Fearing’s 10th solo album Every Soul’s a Sailor was named Worldwide Album of the Year by Blues Roots Radio and earned him Contemporary Singer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. The Halifax Herald calls him “a king among minstrels” … Acoustic Guitar Magazine states, “Fearing’s music crackles with ideas and collaborative energy … masterful guitar work from acoustic rock rhythm to elegant finger style.”

Catherine MacLellan is one of Canada’s finest and favourite east coast singer-songwriters. She has released several albums, including the Juno Award-winning The Raven’s Sun, as well as a tribute album to her late father, Gene MacLellan. That album If It’s Alright With You contains 13 of his most famous compositions, including Snowbird, a trademark hit for Anne Murray. With her obvious passion and seemingly effortless delivery, MacLellan never ceases to enchant and enthrall.

Steve Dawson—with busy first-call, upright bassist Jeremy Holmes and drummer Liam MacDonald by his side—will lead this remarkable collection of renowned artists through two killer sets of authentic and inspiring music. The opening set showcases each headliner individually, with Steve, Liam and Jeremy supporting. For the second half of the evening, the entire entourage comes together on stage to play a full set of collaborative group numbers … more songs, guitars, harmonies, camaraderie, instrumental breaks, laughter … musical magic at its best!
