Legendary Singer-songwriter James Taylor To Release New Album ‘American Standard’ On February 28

0

Legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor releases his new album, American Standard on February 28, 2020.

The new collection marks Taylor’s 19th studio album and his first release since 2015’s Before This World, his first #1 career album. On American Standard, Taylor infuses new sounds and fresh meaning into these timeless works of art, reimagining some of the most beloved songs of the 20th century and making them completely his own.

“I’ve always had songs I grew up with that I remember really well, that were part of the family record collection – and I had a sense of how to approach, so it was a natural to put American Standard together,” explains Taylor. “I know most of these songs from the original cast recordings of the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, including My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Carousel, Showboat and others.” He adds, “In terms of how they were performed and recorded before, we paid attention to the chords and melody, but we were interested in doing something new, and in bringing something new to it, we’ve reinterpreted the songs, that’s what makes it worth doing.”

In addition to the new album, Taylor has announced a major US tour with special guest Jackson Browne, kicking off on May 15th at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The tour will reach 26 cities, nationwide. The US tour follows his already announced coast to coast Canadian Tour with Bonnie Raitt. Taylor will also be returning to Fenway Park in Boston with his All-Star Band on June 21st for a special show featuring Brandi Carlile and Shawn Colvin. See upcoming Canadian dates below, and visit https://tour.jamestaylor.com/ for more information.

The 14 carefully chosen selections on American Standard naturally feature Taylor’s one-of-a-kind vocal ability and incomparable musicianship, but what makes the album so unique is the inventive way he and fellow co-producers, longtime collaborator Dave O’Donnell and master guitarist John Pizzarelli, approached the project: beautifully simple, stripped-down guitar arrangements based on Taylor’s and Pizzarelli’s skillful guitar work rather than the more traditional piano. The effect is mesmerizing.

A small sampling of the album’s inspired repertoire includes James’ swinging take on Walter Donaldson and George A. Whiting’s “My Blue Heaven”, Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner’s enduring “Almost Like Being In Love”, from the score of Brigadoon; Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington’s enchanting “The Nearness of You”, Frank Loesser’s jaunty “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat”, from the Broadway smash Guys and Dolls; Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s piercing social commentary from South Pacific, “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught”, a superb reading of the Billie Holiday-Arthur Herzog Jr. classic, “God Bless The Child”, and the first ever cover of a song originally featured in the 1938 Merrie Melodies cartoon Katnip Kollege, “As Easy As Rolling Off A Log”.

The album comes on the heels of Taylor’s previously announced Break Shot, a deeply personal and authentic audio-only memoir, for Audible. This one-of-a-kind music and storytelling experience is the first-ever Audible Original performance by James Taylor and is currently available for free on Audible. Produced by MTV/VH1 veteran Bill Flanagan, Taylor takes listeners through the triumphs and traumas of his childhood and difficult family life. Break Shot illuminates the deep connection Taylor has with the songs on his new album, American Standard.

Accompanying today’s announcement is Jessie’s new single and video titled “Love In The Dark”. The visual was directed by Se Oh (represented by Mad Ruk Entertainment) and features Jessie submerging and eventually getting lost in a serene body of water reflecting a starlit sky. “Love In The Dark” is a poignant song that tells the story of being there for a loved one while providing them strength as they go through life’s challenges, emphasized on an uplifting and bold melody. Along with the video launch is an MTV broadcast premiere on MTV Live, mtvU, and the Viacom Times Square Billboard. Speaking on the inspiration behind the visual / song Jessie shares “I wrote this during a really sad time in my life, I remember crying. I hope people understand how vulnerable it is.”

“Love In The Dark” follows the release of “Crazy” a cover version of the iconic Pasty Cline song and “Far Away”, a heart-wrenching song centered on the harsh reality many migrant families have experienced. It’s via Jessie’s raw vocals, triumphant spirit and harrowing yet heart tugging storylines that she has proven herself to be one of the most hyped new voices deserving of the great fanfare and critical acclaim she’s received to date.

In the past year alone, Jessie Reyez has been nominated for a Grammy award for Best Urban Contemporary Album for her sophomore EP Being Human In Public. She’s released a string of critically-praised songs, performed “Crazy” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, as well as a duet performance of the GOLD-CERTIFIED reimagined hit single “Imported” with 6LACK on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, a headlining tour, performances at a plethora of music festivals, and collaborations with many notable artists including Eminem, Kehlani, Daniel Caesar, Romeo Santos, Lewis Capaldi, Karol G, Bea Miller and has co-writing credits on Dua Lipa’s hit song “One Kiss” with Calvin Harris and “Promises” with Calvin Harris and Sam Smith.

Being Human In Public showcases some of her most personal and intimate moments throughout her life and is a collection of singles that were released throughout the 2018. The EP has garnered over 400M streams worldwide, overall her acclaimed catalog has garnered nearly one billion streams worldwide and her videos have garnered over 230M views. Reyez, who is set to take the stage at this year’s Coachella festival, continues to be recognized by both critics and peers alike while remaining to be a unique voice amongst them.

Hayley Williams Unveils Solo Single & Video For “Simmer”

0

Hayley Williams has announced today’s premiere of “Simmer,” the first single from the GRAMMY award-winning Paramore singer and founder of haircare and color company Good Dye Young’s hugely anticipated debut solo album. An equally fiery official video – directed by Warren Fu (Paramore, The 1975, The Strokes)  – is streaming now. Produced by Taylor York, lead collaborator in the GRAMMY award-winning Paramore, “Simmer” heralds Williams’ upcoming debut solo album, “PETALS FOR ARMOR,” due May 8th.

“I’m so ready and so incredibly humbled to get to share this project,” says Williams. “Making it was a scary, empowering experience. Some of my proudest moments as a lyricist happened while writing ‘PETALS FOR ARMOR.’ And I was able to get my hands a little dirtier than usual when it came to instrumentation. I’m in a band with my favorite musicians so I never really feel the need to step into a role as a player when it comes to Paramore records. This project, however, benefited from a little bit of musical naïveté and rawness and so I experimented quite a bit more. I made this with some of the closest people to me. Their respective talents really shine bright throughout the record. I like to think we all make each other better and the result is something that sounds and FEELS exactly as I’d hoped it would. Now that it’s time to put it all out there, I can finally exhale. I’m excited to let people in to experience a different side of myself that I’ve only very recently become familiar with.”

“Simmer” marks Hayley Williams’ first new music release since Paramore’s chart-topping 2017 album, “AFTER LAUGHTER.” Highlighted by the gold certified “Hard Times,” and singles “Told You So,” “Fake Happy,” and “Rose-Colored Boy,” the LP debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Alternative Albums” chart upon its May 2017 release while also arriving on the overall SoundScan/Billboard 200 at #6 – Paramore’s third consecutive top 10 chart debut. Along with its popular success, “AFTER LAUGHTER” ultimately proved one of the year’s most critically applauded releases, with The Fader, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NPR, Billboard, and many more ranking it among their “Best of 2017” coverage.

Paramore has accomplished a truly remarkable run of RIAA certified albums and singles since coming together in Nashville in 2004, from 2005’s gold certified debut, “ALL WE KNOW IS FALLING” featuring the gold certified single “Pressure,” and 2007’s 2x platinum certified breakthrough, “RIOT!” (with its 4x platinum-certified hit, “Misery Business,” as well as the platinum certified singles “crushcrushcrush” and “That’s What You Get”) to 2008’s worldwide 2x platinum “Decode” (from Chop Shop/Atlantic’s chart-topping “TWILIGHT – ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK”) and 2009’s platinum certified “brand new eyes” with its GRAMMY-nominated smash, the 2x platinum “The Only Exception” and the gold certified “Ignorance.”

The band’s RIAA platinum certified fourth album, simply entitled “PARAMORE,” made a chart-busting debut atop the SoundScan/Billboard 200 upon its April 2013 release – Paramore’s first #1 album to date. Named the year’s “Best Rock Album” by Entertainment Weekly, “PARAMORE” showcased a string of singles, including 2x RIAA platinum certified hit, the top 10 “Still Into You,” and the #1 3x platinum hit, “Ain’t It Fun.” The latter track proved Paramore’s biggest single to date, ascending to #1 at Hot AC and Rock radio outlets nationwide, #2 at Top 40, as well as to the top 10 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” – the band’s first ever top 10 hit on the overall chart and their highest peaking song thus far.  “Ain’t It Fun” saw Paramore taking home their first-ever GRAMMY Award, earning the “Best Rock Song” trophy at the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards. In addition, Williams was named that year as the first winner of Billboard’s “Trailblazer Award,” honoring her as a standout female artist who breaks from convention to make a unique mark and pave the way for new talent.

Long regarded as an exhilarating live act, Paramore has spent much of the past decade-plus on the road, including countless sold out world tours and show-stealing festival sets around the globe.

Williams is also an accomplished entrepreneur, co-founding the vegan, cruelty-free hair color brand, Good Dye Young.

The Jerry Cans Announce New Album, Echoes, Out May 15, 2020

0

The Jerry Cans announce their fourth LP, Echoes, with a new song available this Friday, January 24. “Atauttikkut” was first performed on CBC q’s Live in Iqaluit, an event that kicked off Nunavut Music Week 2.0 last year. The song now arrives as the lead-off single from a collection that signals, and grapples with, change.

On Echoes, The Jerry Cans balance palpable tension with woozy, cresting beauty. The new album, out May 15, 2020 via Aakuluk Music, finds The Jerry Cans in a much different sonic state of mind than when the band was last seen on the national stage, at 2018’s JUNO Awards broadcast.

There’s an uneasy, unfamiliar energy to Echoes, in part a product of new processes and experiences that went into its creation. Produced by Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes, Land of Talk, Suuns) and recorded at his Breakglass Studio in Montreal, Echoes splinters into vectors of reverb-frayed rock with buzzed out violin, throat singing and synth swirled drone tones. The alternative album comes complete with a truly special title track, with James Ungalaq of Nunavut metal legends Northern Haze front and centre.

1. Tukturjuk
2. On The Rocks

Sass Jordan rocks the blues on new album Rebel Moon Blues, available March 13, 2020; Touring around the world with ‘A Bowie Celebration’

0

Canadian JUNO and Billboard Best Female Rock Vocalist award winner Sass Jordan today announces the release of her new album, Rebel Moon Blues — available March 13, 2020 via Stony Plain Records.

With more than a million records sold worldwide, Sass Jordan delivers the eight-song album spotlighting her signature vox in a wholly-dedicated blues endeavor across seven diligently selected covers — plus one knockout original, “The Key.”

“The Blues has been there through my entire career. People have always said, ‘You’re so bluesy.’ And it’s true. My singing is blues-inflected. My songs use blues-type licks. I didn’t do any of that on purpose. It isn’t contrived. It’s just me.”

Co-produced by Sass and D#, Rebel Moon Blues serves as a watershed that charts a new course in Jordan’s musical voyage while tracing her love of the blues back to its source. All killer and no filler, the album features the inimitably raspy rock goddess jubilantly celebrating the songs, sounds and styles of everyone from old masters like Willie Dixon, Elmore James and Freddie King to younger, louder guns like Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher.

Nailing down the crate-digging setlist was both a labor of love and a trip down the rabbit hole. “I wasn’t following any formula. I knew they had to be songs I loved and could really sink my teeth into,” she says.

Cut off the cuff and on the fly in just three fast-paced days, Jordan and the Champagne Hookers — her touring band of guitarists Chris Caddell and Jimmy Reid, bassist Derrick Brady and drummer Cassius Pereira, augmented by blues harp master Steve Marriner and keyboardist Jesse O’Brien — played live in the same room at the same time. “The energy is so different when you’re playing it live,” Jordan says. “It’s a different frequency, a different vibe. It’s very joyous. You can hear a lot of us laughing on there. I love that kind of thing.

“It’s like you’re right there with us. We’re there, we’re live, and we’re having a blast, baby!”

And no changing the lyrics either. “To me, what makes these songs fresh, besides our energy, is that it’s a female doing traditionally male stuff. And I sing the lyrics the way it was written… If the singer’s singing about, ‘My girl,’ I sing, ‘My girl.’ That’s what puts the icing on the cake. I like approaching the songs the way they were written. I find that not messing with the original gender is particularly relevant in today’s climate. It’s great that we can get away with doing that now.”

A pioneer of powerful, gritty female-fronted rock, Jordan has worked alongside fellow greats like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, and Van Halen, among many more. She is currently on an International 30-date tour — including Tel Aviv, San Francisco, New York, Atlanta, and Canadian stops in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto — with A Bowie Celebration, the critically acclaimed, one-of-a-kind roving tribute to the late legend, featuring a distinct alumni of former bandmates. Dates are below.

Born in Birmingham, U.K and raised in Montreal, she launched her solo career with the single “Tell Somebody” from her 1988 debut of the same name, garnering national acclaim and a JUNO Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist. Throughout her career, she’s earned three more nominations for Best Female Vocalist thanks to albums like Racine (1992), Rats (1994), Present (1997), Hot Gossip (2000), Get What You Give (2006), From Dusk Til Dawn (2009) and her side project S.U.N.’s album, Something Unto Nothing (2011) — along with singles like “Make You A Believer,” “You Don’t Have to Remind Me,” “Sun’s Gonna Rise” and 1992’s “Trust in Me,” a duet with Joe Cocker from the record-selling Bodyguard soundtrack.

Jordan starred in the off-Broadway Janis Joplin show, Love Janis, performed The Vagina Monologues in Winnipeg and Toronto, guest starred on NBC’s Sisters, and of course, weighed in as the only female judge on Canadian Idol for all six seasons beginning in 2003.

In 2017, she released Racine Revisited, recreating her sophomore album with an all-star cast for its 25th anniversary. This year, Rats celebrated the same milestone with a colored-vinyl reissue.

“It’s surreal,” she acknowledges. “When you hear ‘25th anniversary,’ you’re like, ‘WTF?’ I don’t really remember the person that wrote them. I’m not that person now. But then it passes. Because it’s another day! It’s now! And I have more fun now than I’ve ever had.

“My voice is better now than it’s ever been. I can hit notes that I never could before. I feel the exact opposite of a lot of people. I feel the voice gets better with age. Hell, everything gets better with age!”

Not surprisingly, she’s less concerned with what she’s done than what’s coming next. That includes a new brand, Rebel Moon Whisky, along with her Kick Ass Sass wine. “Whisky is my spirit animal,” she laughs. “There aren’t any female singers doing a whisky line yet, that I know of. It’s a whole new thing! Besides, what goes better with blues than whisky or wine?”
And rest assured, there’s plenty more blues to come from Jordan. “I definitely want to do some more recording in this style. I loved every second of it. It all happened so easily and it just made so much sense.

“I’m not reinventing the wheel. Never have, never will… But this opens up a whole new world for me, and it’s one that I belong in and feel at home in already!”

Rebel Moon Blues is available March 13, 2020.

Dave Matthews Band Announces 2020 North American Summer Tour

0

Today, Dave Matthews Band announced dates for its 2020 North American summer tour, which will launch with a two-night stand on June 16th in Uncasville, CT at Mohegan Sun Arena. The headline run will also include two-night stands in Noblesville, IN, Chicago, IL, Saratoga Springs, NY, Gilford, NH, West Palm Beach, FL, Irvine, CA and Durant, OK.

Returning to the Gorge Amphitheatre for its traditional three-night Labor Day run, the band will be joined over the weekend by support artists Mavis Staples, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Allen Stone, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and Dumpstafunk.

Dave Matthews Band is committing to help plant one million trees as a collective effort with The Dreaming Tree Wines and DocuSign. The band invites concertgoers to join them in this mission by contributing an optional donation of $2 per ticket to plant a tree with The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign – a major forest restoration effort with a goal of planting a billion trees around the world by 2025. This year’s annual eco-village will feature a heavy emphasis on the tree-planting campaign. Tour greening efforts and the eco-village are in partnership with DocuSign and REVERB.

Dave Matthews Band, who was named a UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador in 2019, will be neutralizing the biggest contributor to a concert’s carbon footprint – fan travel. In addition to the band’s footprint, REVERB will be calculating the carbon footprint associated with fan travel to DMB shows in 2020 and the band will be neutralizing these emissions by supporting carbon reduction projects. The band has a long history of reducing their environmental footprint and neutralizing tour carbon emissions from flights, busses and trucks, hotel stays and venue energy use going back to their first shows in 1991.

Dave Matthews Band has sold more than 25 million tickets since its inception and a collective 38 million CDs and DVDs combined. With the release of 2018’s Come Tomorrow, Dave Matthews Band became the first group in history to have seven consecutive studio albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The New York Times, in a Critic’s Pick review, observed, “willed optimism fills the songs on ‘Come Tomorrow,’ while cynicism and irony are nowhere within earshot.”

The album produced an astounding seven radio singles, five of which were Top 20 Hot 100 singles including “Photograph,” “Rockstar,” “Far Away,” “If Everyone Cared,” and “Savin’ Me”. Stone Temple Pilots will join as special guest on all dates. Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown and Switchfoot will support on select dates.

Upon release All The Right Reasons debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and marked the bands third straight No. 1 debut in their native Canada. All The right Reasons spent 110 weeks in the Top 30 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and received multiple Gold and Platinum certifications around the world.
