Bobbie Gentry ‘The Girl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters’ Available September 21

0

In 1967, an enigmatic singer, songwriter and producer named Bobbie Gentry rose out of the Mississippi delta and enchanted audiences around the world with her beautiful, captivating voice and her “Ode To Billie Joe.” An unconventional, beguiling song with simple acoustic guitar and sparse production, and notably without a discernible chorus, the song introduced Gentry and her style of storytelling that was very different to the confessional song writing of other emerging female singers. The song caused a lot of commotion as it shot to number one in America and knocked The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” off the top spot. When the album Ode To Billie Joe was released the following month, it topped the charts and was the only record to displace Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band from its 15-week reign. Over the next several years, Gentry, whose birthday was this past Friday, July 27, released seven studio albums and broke ground in numerous ways as one of the first female musicians to write, produce and even publish her own music. She also produced her elaborate stage shows via her own production company and was the first female singer songwriter to be afforded her own BBC TV series in the UK where she was wildly popular. She became one of the most iconic and influential artists of the 1960s and 70s, and then in the early ’80s she made her final appearance and disappeared from the public eye completely, never to return.

Capitol/UMe are proud to announce that on September 21, they will release the first major retrospective of this most groundbreaking artist with The Girl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters, an eight CD box set that includes all seven of Gentry’s studio albums sensitively remastered from the original tapes, supplemented by over 75 previously unreleased recordings including her ‘lost’ jazz album, outtakes, demos, rarities and an eighth disc of live performances taken from her celebrated series for the BBC. The release has specially commissioned cover art by David Downton and includes an 84-page book with a comprehensive essay by boxset compiler Andrew Batt, rare and unseen photos, eight postcards and a facsimile of her original handwritten lyrics for “Ode To Billie Joe.”

Gentry’s seven albums for Capitol Records featured some exceptional material. She was an artist who could turn her hand to fit country, folk, soul, pop, Americana, blues and jazz, and this box set brings all the magic together. Pick outs include the classic originals of “Ode To Billie Joe,” swamp funk mover “Mississippi Delta” (complete with an alternative version), classy Glen Campbell duet “Mornin’ Glory,” her definitive cover of “Hushabye Mountain,” pop-soul triumph “Fancy,” and from her final album, the melancholy “Lookin’ In.”

In addition, there are superb previously unreleased recordings including originals like “I Didn’t Know” and “Joanne” alongside essential covers of “Conspiracy Of Homer Jones,” “God Bless The Child,” and “Spinning Wheel.” Also included are intimate acoustic performances of “The Seventh Son,” “Feelin’ Good,” “Seasons Come, Seasons Go” and “Belinda.” For the rarities and obscurities fan, making their appearance on CD/digital for the first time are “La Siepe,” Bobbie’s Italian-language entry to the 1968 San Remo song festival, UK number one single “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” sung in Spanish, and a little-known duet with Kelly Gordon; “Love Took My Heart And Mashed That Sucker Flat.” Lastly there’s disc eight featuring live recordings from her BBC TV series, including an inspired pairing of “Niki-Hoeky with Barefootin’,” and dazzling takes of “Refractions,” “Ode To Billie Joe,” “He Made A Woman Out Of Me,” and an extended “Your Number One Fan.”

Gentry’s career blazed brightly for a few short years, but only now is the full extent of her artistry coming into focus. When we think of empowered female stars we think of Beyoncé, Madonna, or even Dolly Parton, but before all of them there came the girl from Chickasaw County. When she emerged in the late 60’s women were just starting to make their mark in the music industry, but female identity was polarized between the light entertainment star and the confessional singer-songwriter. Gentry developed her own unique persona, which was a hybrid of both; part creative songwriter, and part musical theatre performer. A storyteller at heart, Gentry created characters and situations that were often inspired by her Southern childhood, and the media and public alike were fascinated by the contrast between her glamorous appearance and the rural simplicity of her origins. Romanticized over time, these stories have coalesced into a classic version of the American dream; a rags-to-riches story that took Gentry from the Delta backwoods to the world’s most glittering stages.

Her disappearance intrigues us quite as much as what was thrown from the Tallahatchie Bridge: Why did she disappear? What has she been doing? Where is she now? But ‘Where is Bobbie Gentry?’ is not the question we should be asking: Gentry was a trailblazer who was years ahead of her time; a successful writer, singer, musician, performer, producer, publisher, and businesswoman. What we should really be asking ourselves is ‘Who was Bobbie Gentry?’ – The Girl From Chickasaw County provides more answers to that question than ever before, definitively re-appraising the musical legacy of this influential and iconic artist.

Akron-based Transgender musicians DreamStates release statement on Trump’s ‘Religious Liberty Task Force’

0

— In the wake of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement this week of a ‘religious liberty task force’ within the Department of Justice, transgender musicians and activists DreamStates have released a statement.

“As two proud transgender women, Madeline Eckhart and I have no interest in staying silent while lawmakers in this country try to strip us of our freedoms, rights, and protections under the law,” says Natalie Grace Martin. The ‘task force’ is the latest in a recent string of administrative changes that threaten the rights and civil liberties of transgender citizens today.

“This action marks yet another in a long series of devious attempts by this administration to silence, invalidate, and marginalize LGBT Americans.

“It is thoroughly un-American to place religious beliefs above the civil rights and protections of any marginalized community, and that’s precisely what this amounts to.

“It’s a blatant disregard for the safety and freedom of American citizens.”

DreamStates are based in the greater Akron, Ohio area. “We have a strong desire to expand the roster of transgender musicians in the entertainment industry,” DreamStates explain. The pair have been featured by the Akron Pride Festival, TransOhio Transgender & Allies Symposium, and more. “For us, it goes far beyond our personal musical goals and over into the realm of activism, equality and empowerment for what is an embattled community of beautiful people.”

Their new single — “Normal” — asks ‘what’s normal, anyway?’ and assures fans of all feathers, ‘you’re more than any stereotype.’

Billy Talent And Friends Announce Benefit Concert For Victims Of Toronto’s Danforth Shooting

0

Toronto’s Billy Talent have announced that they will be hosting a benefit concert for the victims of the tragic shooting on Danforth Avenue. The Billy Talent and Friends TOronto TOgether concert will see special appearances from City and Colour and PUP and others. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to support the victims of this shooting via the #TORONTOSTRONG / Toronto Foundation. In an effort to support the local community that has been devastated by these events, the concert will be held at The Danforth Music Hall on August 11, during the Taste of the Danforth festival. Those who want to attend the event can get tickets here beginning Wednesday, August 1st at 10:00 AM EST.

In a statement announcing this benefit the band wrote:

We write this with a broken heart. What has happened in Toronto this summer and with what happened on the Danforth a few blocks from our studio, has not only hit close to home, this HAS hit home. All we know is that we can’t just sit here. We don’t know what we want but we want to do something. We want to throw a concert to show the world and more importantly our community that Toronto is a place of love, of community, of kindness and compassion. The violence that has happened here this summer does not represent the majority. This city is one of the best places in the world and we have to stand up and band together. Let’s raise money for the victims and their families. Let’s get the artists and people of the city to stand together. While none of us have all the answers we feel we need to make a start. We need to help, but let’s fucking do something TOGETHER. Let’s get the powers that be TOGETHER. Let’s do something special for our city and all the amazing people that live here and deserve to be celebrated.

Since their inception 25 years ago, giving back to their community has always been important to Billy Talent, who recently founded their own charity trust. The Billy Talent Charity Trust is administered by the band’s drummer Aaron Solowoniuk, and was created as a vehicle for Billy Talent and their fans to raise funds and awareness for various charities helping youth.

Reuben And The Dark Covers The Tragically Hip’s “Bobcaygeon” With Proceeds To The Gord Downie And Chanie Wenjack Fund

0

Available to purchase and stream today, proceeds from Reuben and the Dark’s cover of The Tragically Hip’s timeless and nation-defining song Bobcaygeon will benefit the Gord Downie And Chanie Wenjack Fund, which is part of Gord Downie’s legacy and embodies his commitment, and that of his family, to improving the lives of First Peoples.

“It’s not often that a song can move the performer as much as it moves the audience,” says Reuben Bullock of his band Reuben and the Dark’s tribute to Gord Downie. “The first time we played ‘Bobcaygeon’ in front of a crowd, I knew we needed to get into a studio and record it. Feeling how widely Gord’s spirit resonates, I wanted to release my version for the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund as my way of using our voice to support and engage with Gord’s vision of reconciliation.”

In collaboration with the Wenjack family, the goal of the fund is to continue the conversation that began with Chanie Wenjack’s residential school story, and to aid our collective reconciliation journey through awareness, education and action.

“The Downie Wenjack Fund is important because of its focus on youth, its active education on Indigenous history, and the creation of connections with this land’s rich Indigenous culture. I am compelled to be a part of this action, to be both a listener and a participant in these conversations, a student of these issues, and a proponent of progress,” Bullock said.

The spirited folk-rock outfit recently released a new album, Arms of a Dream, out now on Arts & Crafts. The record finds songwriter/vocalist Reuben Bullock working outside his comfort zone, both musically and lyrically. The result is Bullock’s most vivid and transformative music to date: an intimate exploration of the inversion of imagination and reality in dreams.

On the heels of a successful stint of U.S. tour dates, a stop at Field Trip Festival and magical sets at Interstellar Rodeo and Calgary Folk Festival, Reuben and the Dark is adding more dates to their fall tour. The band will perform in their home province of Alberta on October 29 at The Winspear Theatre in Edmonton, October 30 at The Jack Singer in Calgary and November 3 in Lethbridge at Southminster United Church.
