How Steve Lillywhite Helps KFC Sell 600,000 CDs A MONTH…In Indonesia

0

Since 2016, renowned British record producer Steve Lillywhite has been running Jagonya Music & Sport, a company that places music in Indonesia’s Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.

KFC Indonesia sells around 600,000 CDs a month, making it a huge player in the Indonesia music industry. Music Ally spoke to him to find out more about this unique story of chicken and music.

How did KFC end up selling CDs?

The family of my boss [Ricardo Gelael, director of PT Fast Food Indonesia] owns all the franchises of KFC in Indonesia. Indonesia is a 90% Muslim country, so there is no pork. Beef is not really part of their tradition, so chicken rules. They know chicken like the French know foie gras. KFC is eight out of 10 people’s favourite fried chicken.

KFC is a destination restaurant here. A lot of the stores have stages for music and a lot of them have kids’ playgrounds. And they have tweaked certain things to go with Indonesian culture: they serve it with rice, they serve a spicy one, as well as the original. They do a whole load of different things, but it is still KFC; it still has Colonel Sanders. Because of the music connection, it has this slight feel of music, cool and chicken.

About eight years ago, my boss’s brother [Fabian Gelael] was running the company and he decided to start bundling CDs with chicken. This was a ridiculous concept, but when you live in Indonesia you get the sense of the ridiculous here. And it really took off. People have said to me, ‘Like Starbucks?’ And I have said, ‘No it is not like Starbuck’s because the point-of-sale person takes your order and says, “Would you like a CD with that?” So it is actually suggested selling.

We have a maximum of 10 or 11 CDs at any one point to choose from. And you can either basically just buy a CD, like in a record store, or you can buy it slightly discounted and bundled with your meal. Around 98% of our CDs are bundled with chicken. It’s not like record stores are coming back, but people now have this incredible connection with KFC and music.

My boss’s brother left the company and then my boss took over both the chicken and the music side. And he realised that two-and-a-half-years ago, when he took over, that we know distribution is king. All the record stores in Indonesia, like the rest of the world, were closing down. So he was the only record store in town. But they were making not a great slice of the pie because they were just distributing record companies’ [music]. So he brought me in to make the company go directly to artists. To make it more like a record company, with its own record stores.

We sell the best music in Indonesia. We are known for the best chicken, so we like to have the best CDs. Other chicken companies, because it was so successful, have started selling CDs. But they sell about 40,000 a month across their stores. We sell close to 600,000 every month. We are the Manchester United of CD sales!

So he [Fabian] brought me in to do deals directly with artists. My team and I decide what CDs are put in the stores. This is a big thing. You can sell half a million or 600,000 CDs of your artist. It is a big chunk of change for the artists with the royalties. Everyone is trying to get me to release their CD and I have to decide what is releasable. I have to think of things for the whole family, which is great fun. I came up as a rock producer, but I am not really releasing any rock albums. All the content is local. I have just introduced DVDs, which are huge. Kids DVDs and I put old movies together and make a DVD bundle. I can have some fun with it.

I go to the artists and I offer them basically a better deal than if they are with a record label. A lot of the big artists are still signed to the big record labels and I am not just talking about Sony. They are on big labels in Indonesia that have been stalwarts of the Indonesian music scene for the last 30 or 40 years [including Musica Studio’s, Trinity Productions and Aquarius Music]. About 50% of my product is the ones that I deal with directly. And 50% is what I pass on from the major labels.

Ray Davies on Kinks reunion, getting shot, history, musical telepathy and Brexit

0

Even if you don’t remember the Kinks, you’ll know the songs, from Lola to Waterloo Sunset. They’ve been covered so many times and have made Sir Ray Davies one of Britain’s defining songwriters. Still recording aged 74, his latest solo album Our Country: Americana Act 2 is the second part of a musical diary about his love affair with America. Channel 4 went to meet him at his studio today, and just as they started the interview, Ray Davies’ phone rang. It was his old Kinks band mate Mick Avory.

Watch: Robert Plant’s “New World” Featured in Shepard Fairey Video

0

Artist Shepard Fairey has shared a video featuring Robert Plant’s song “New World,” from his new album, Carry Fire, and images by Fairey and fellow artist Ernesto Yerena inspired by photographs by Aaron Huey.

“Every day our senses are assaulted by the ridiculous,” writes Plant. “It’s not so long ago that today’s plots and wrangles between nation governments would seem too far-fetched to inspire a Hollywood blockbuster. The perversions and struggles leave a shadow over the spirit of the people and the land. It’s not an original sin. Every era bears the burden of chaos and warmongering. Time immemorial.

“‘New World’ is a comment on a recent history of conquest and submission. How fitting that Shepard Fairey, Aaron Huey, and Ernesto Yerena complemented our music in such a way. They are artists of great conscience and sensitivity. I’m most grateful. I’m also pleased to add my support to Honor the Earth.”

The Doors Set For 50th Anniversary Reissue Of ‘Waiting for the Sun’ With Unreleased Songs

0

The Doors released their third studio album, Waiting For The Sun, in July 1968. It was the band’s third platinum album in less than two years, and the first to top the album chart. Since its debut, the album has sold millions of copies around the globe and contributed to the Doors’ legendary canon, including the #1 smash, “Hello, I Love You.”

To commemorate the 50th anniversary The Doors will release WAITING FOR THE SUN: 50th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION. This 2-CD/1-LP collection features a new version of the album’s original stereo mix on both CD and 180-gram vinyl LP, which has been newly remastered from the original master tapes by Bruce Botnick, the Doors’ longtime engineer/mixer. The set also includes a second disc of 14 completely unreleased tracks: nine recently discovered “rough mixes” from the album recording sessions and five live songs from a September 17, 1968 Copenhagen show.

While going through his archive, Bruce Botnick uncovered a cache of rough mixes from the sessions that hadn’t been played in 50 years. Botnick says: “I prefer some of these rough mixes to the finals, as they represent all of the elements and additional background vocals, different sensibilities on balances, and some intangible roughness, all of which are quite attractive and refreshing.”

When the Doors recorded Waiting For The Sunin 1968, they were among the first bands to use Dolby A301 noise reduction processors, which was cutting-edge recording tech at the time. Similarly, the most advanced sound recording innovations were used to make the anniversary edition of Waiting For The Sun. The new release has been encoded with the MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) process. An MQA disc plays back on all CD players as standard CD quality. But if a conventional CD player is connected to an MQA-enabled device, it can play the same disc back at its original sample rate.

Coheed And Cambria Announce First Canadian Tour In 8 Years

0

Coheed and Cambria have announced their first Canadian tour in 8 years this September to correspond with the announcement last week of their monstrous 15 song, 78 minute new LP, The Unheavenly Creatures, due Oct 5 on Roadrunner Records. The 8 city tour will have support by seminal metal progressive band, Protest the Hero, and Crowns Land.

Last Friday, Coheed and Cambria announced details of their long awaited new album and label return, The Unheavenly Creatures. The sprawling fifteen track, self-produced, 78 minute epic finds Coheed and Cambria returning to the conceptual narrative of The Amory Wars. Today the band has launched pre-orders for the album’s deeply immersive Vaxis – Act 1: The Unheavenly Creatures Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set: http://www.coheedandcambria.com/. Pre-orders for The Unheavenly Creatures standard album will begin Friday, June 29th, with new music from the forthcoming LP arriving next week.

Set for release on October 5th, the box set includes an exclusive eighty-plus page hardcover illustrated sci-fi novel with strikingly realistic color imagery by Chase Stone, as well as the complete Act 1 novella written by frontman Claudio Sanchez and his wife, Chondra Echert. The set also houses a fully-wearable hard-plastic mask of the main character in The Unheavenly Creatures, a CD copy of the album, as well as the exclusive bonus album, The Crown Heights Demos, showing the songs in their original written form. Additional items include a 3-panel fold out poster of expanded album cover art, and the Unheavenly Creatures Black Card which will allow all card holders early access to tickets and early entry to Coheed and Cambria headline dates (including this summer’s tour).

Coheed and Cambria recently released The Unheavenly Creatures’ 10-minute prog manifesto, “The Dark Sentencer,” which was leaked to fans by frontman Claudio Sanchez along with the opening paragraphs from the album’s aforementioned novella. “’The Dark Sentencer’ opens with prickly guitars that build into a stadium-sized thump,” noted Rolling Stone while Revolver declared, “the soaring song with its rolling guitar riff could soundtrack the montage to any intergalactic underdog story.” Consequence of Sound hailed “The Dark Sentencer” adding, “Gang vocals and ephemeral harmonies underscore the band’s trademark shredding.”

Tickets go on sale Friday at 10am, while those who are signed up to the band’s mailing list will get first crack at the tickets. VIP tickets will be available.

Brett Kissel Announces Part 2 of We Were That Song Tour Hitting Every Province and Territory

0

Brett Kissel – the reigning CCMA Male Artist of the Year – has announced Part 2 of his historic “We Were That Song” tour beginning in September (see full list of dates below).

Kissel has already performed 50+ shows across Canada from January to March of this year. For the first time in recent memory, a Canadian tour will be truly “Nationwide,” with every province and every territory hosting a Brett Kissel concert.

“My goal for this tour was to play for as many fans as possible. I was so thankful with the response my team got from cities and towns across Canada. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have enough time to fit all the dates into my schedule,” said Kissel. “I told my agent ‘we just have to organize Part 2 of this tour for the Fall’ so we can hit all the spots we missed in the first quarter of 2018. It seems like we’ve now made this one of, if not the most extensive tours in Canadian music history!”

Brett received the CIMA Road Gold Award for Part 1 of the Canadian tour earlier this year, recognizing a high level of achievement during a touring period, which sits on Kissel’s mantle beside his most recent gold single, “Cool With That,”, certified Gold while on tour.

Last month, Brett released his new single “Guitars and Gasoline” to country radio, with an entertaining music video released to YouTube (https://youtu.be/mWeYcbK0wtw) which was captured entirely during the We Were That Song Tour Part 1.

Country newcomer Dan Davidson, who joined Brett on the road for many of his tour dates earlier this year, will join Kissel again as a special guest on select dates on Part 2.

Tickets for the tour go on sale Tuesday, June 26th at 10am local in all markets. Visit tour.brettkissel.com or www.brettkissel.com for more ticket information. More dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

Taylor Swift Plays 60’s Temptress in New Sugarland Video

0

Country act Sugarland released their much-anticipated, and sixth, studio album on June 8. Bigger on Friday was followed up 24 hours later with the video for single Babe. The video features an appearance from Taylor Swift, who also co-wrote the song.

An early tease

The duo initially teased the video three days earlier during the CMT Music Awards with an exciting trailer. Wearing furs, and showing her jewels and blonde curls, Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles acts as a rich 1960s housewife in a love triangle with Swift and one-time Superman, Brandon Routh.

Routh plays the cheating husband who hides his philandering ways from his significant other, while Swift teases as the work colleague who spends time with Routh away from his wife. The video showcases numerous disguises and glamorous costumes, and Swift pays homage to Joan Holloway by wearing a red wig for her temptress role. Sugarland’s Kristian Bush even joins in on the fun by playing a nosey neighbor. After spending numerous nights on her own, Nettles’ character realizes that something is wrong and that her marriage is falling apart. When she eventually finds her husband and mistress together, she decides that she’s not going to take it anymore.

Back to her roots

The catchy song was written by Swift and Train’s Pat Monahan, making this the singer’s second country return after she became one of pop’s biggest stars. She wrote the Little Big Town track Better Man in 2017, which earned the band a Grammy award. Sugarland will be hoping that Babe will be every bit as successful.

Fashion comes and goes, but it seems retro never goes out of style. We all love looking back at previous decades. Even Selena Gomez is getting in on the act, donning a retro Jackie O-style bob in the music video for new single, Back to You. So the 60s certainly appear to be in vogue, at least in the music world. Music isn’t the only area of entertainment that offers us a glimpse into the past, however. Hollywood can’t seem to stop churning out remakes of movies and TV shows from yesteryear. We even see it in gaming, with old favorites such as Pac Man constantly being reinvented. Other games, like Hot Ink, while not strictly set in a particular period, offer a retro look. Hot Ink is available from Jackpot City in Canada where new players are welcomed with a $1,600 sign-up bonus. Fortunately, for the user, that’s in today’s prices, not the 60s.

Mad Men-style

Sugarland’s Bush told Entertainment Tonight that the video is more like a movie, albeit in the style of TV’s Mad Men. Nettles added that she thought the video was cinematic and that she views it as a period piece.

Swift, who also lends her vocals to the track, shows off a distinctive flame-haired style in the Anthony Mandler-directed video. The 28-year-old singer wears a bright pink sweater and skirt combination, with matching lipstick. Nettles dazzles with her retro hairdo, along with a bright yellow dress and pearl necklace. Routh looks dapper in a Don Draper-style suit.

Brass Band Covers Four Rage Against the Machine Songs

0

Brass Against the Machine sticks it to the man with their brass band covers of iconic Rage Against the Machine songs including Killing In the Name, Wake Up and Guerrilla Radio, among others. Zack de la Rocha vocals are performed by Sophia Urista, who you might remember from the 11th season of television competition show The Voice.

In this politically challenging era, it’s time to stand up against the machine. We want the music we perform to sound inspiring and resonate with people’s emotions, encouraging them to act. We combine rock and edgy hip-hop to play music that’s powerful and empowering. Brass Against is exceptional music with a political edge.
