My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields On The Jazzmater Guitar And How Jimi Hendrix Influenced His Music

0

When you do buy a new Jazzmaster, do you have to tweak it?
Kevin Shields: Yeah, I have to modify it to play comfortably. I started sticking tape on the arm to stop it from going all the way into the hole. That way it’s very loose, and I can just strum the guitar or hit it and play it the way I wanted, and the tremolo arm rests in my palm.

Was it the changing pitches that appealed to you?
Kevin Shields: It wasn’t just a pitch change. We’d already been doing that. I remember when we started in ’83, we used to work with cassette tapes, and we did our drum stuff with bending the tape and changing the pitch. We also did it with synthesizers. There was a band called D.A.F., which was a German electronic band with a synthesizer, and they had a song that was shifting in and out of tune all the time. And I was fascinated by that. When I suddenly discovered the tremolo arm on the guitar, I realized I could do all the stuff I liked from the synthesizer. It was just a moment of, “Oh, my God, I can do all this stuff easily.”

I also remember a video of Jimi Hendrix at Monterey Pop when he’s doing “Wild Thing” quite a few times on TV, and the tape transfer would be wobbling in and out of tune at various spots. At the end it seemed like the tape was about to be eaten. That was the sound of danger, that something wasn’t right. So it was something I was conscious of and slightly fascinated by. When I discovered the Jazzmaster, I could do that and other stuff with it. It was a “eureka” moment.

Diamond D And The Psychotic Neurotics’ Landmark Album ‘Stunts, Blunts And Hip-Hop’ Gets Reissued Today

0

On July 20, 2018, UMe will reissue the out-of-print, 2LP vinyl set of Diamond D And The Psychotic Neurotics’ landmark album Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop.

Twenty-six years ago MC/producer Diamond D from New York’s mighty D.I.T.C. (Diggin’ In The Crates) collective debuted with a stunning classic that entailed elements of what brought him and his crew notoriety—grimy boom-bap anchored by effusive yet obscure samples. Diamond emerged in the late ’80s as a member of Ultimate Force, a short-lived troupe whose debut album was shelved and didn’t see the light of day until over a decade afterwards. Diamond’s encyclopedic knowledge of records, after years of contributions and studious vision, came to the forefront in 1992 with his first official solo venture, Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop.

Despite his acumen and talent as a beatmaker, Diamond D had other production notables pepper his album with mastery and know-how. While Diamond helmed the majority of the beats, longtime visionaries like The 45 King, Jazzy Jay, Large Professor, and D.I.T.C. teammate Showbiz all make stellar appearances on the project. Despite its gritty, sonorous East Coast aesthetic, the album still hit No. 47 on Billboard’s R&B and Hip-Hop chart. You also hear sped up samples and vocals, a sound that would also be forever influential in the decades to come by the likes of 9th Wonder or Kanye West, respectively.

The track “Best-Kept Secret” featured lyrical fury from Fat Joe and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. The follow-up single, “Sally Got A One-Track Mind” also did well, charting at No. 12 nationally. The release featured celebrated cameos from Tribe Called Quest frontman, Q-Tip, as well as Brand Nubian MC Sadat X. Crewmembers Lord Finesse and the late Big L also make their presence abundantly felt on choice cuts.

Diamond’s production was so ahead of its time, Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop sounds as fresh now as it did upon its release decades ago. And while Diamond’s production prowess and loop-centric sound was already known amongst fans of D.I.T.C., Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop proved that a producer driven album could hold its own.

In the years that came about, Diamond remained proactive and contributed to many albums and one-offs that would define his style. Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop is a jazzy foray bound with storytelling narratives, battle raps, and light-hearted lyrics. At 70-minutes, Diamond D’s organized structure keeps the release above water and remains to this day an underground, and often under-mentioned, rap masterwork.

Matt Andersen Releases Live Video of “Coal Mining Blues”

0

Today, New Brunswick’s multi-award winning soul/blues powerhouse Matt Andersen releases the pro-shot live performance video of “Coal Mining Blues.”

The song comes off Matt Andersen & The Mellotones’ Live At Olympic Hall, which was recorded on Nov 22, 2014 at Olympic Hall in Halifax, Nova Scotia in support of Andersen’s JUNO nominated record Weightless.

“I was fortunate enough to have The Mellotones on the road with me for a slew of shows,” Andersen told American Blues Scene. “Some of the best time’s I’ve had playing music. It was an absolute treat to share the stage with these guys, especially this night at Olympic Hall. I’m thrilled that we captured what was coming from those shows.”

From the first notes of “Weightless” to the slow-dying roar of the crowd as the last licks of “Devil’s Bride” squeal out, Matt Andersen and the Mellotones Live at Olympic Hall is a rollicking, sizzling night of Andersen’s thunderous voice and hot guitar playing mashed up with the ten-piece force of nature that is the Mellotones, all captured at a historic dance hall in downtown Halifax.

Andersen calls it “the most drastic thing I could do,” a far cry from his usual one guy, one guitar context. “I make an impact when I’m solo with the quiet parts more than the loud parts. With a band it’s the opposite.” And if you’re going to have a band, it should be the Mellotones. Long a staple of Halifax’s live music scene, the band features a smoking horn section along with keys, drums, and more. “I felt like a rock star,” Andersen says.

Andersen’s also announced a number of solo US dates including stops at Los Angeles’ Hotel Cafe, Seattle’s Tripple Door, and Chicago’s City Winery. Full list of shows below.

Willie Nelson Pays Homage to Frank Sinatra on New Studio Album, My Way, Out September 14

0

Willie Nelson will release My Way, his new studio album on Friday, September 14. Check out Willie’s take on the classic “Summer Wind” below:

My Way is Willie’s second new studio album this year, following the release of his critically-acclaimed Last Man Standing in April.

An album of standards and classics made famous by Frank Sinatra, My Way finds Willie (who’s written a few standards himself) swinging his way through some of the most beloved songs in the Great American Songbook. The album–which features lush string and horn arrangements–was produced by Buddy Cannon and Matt Rollings.

Two iconic avatars on the American pop culture landscape, Frank Sinatra and Willie Nelson express the range of romantic emotion–from the intoxicating thrill of falling in love to the crushing hangover of heartbreak–in songs that speak directly to the listener. Recorded in the spirit of Willie’s legendary 1978 Stardust album (one of the first contemporary artists to “cover” the Great American Songbook) and 2016’s Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin (a Best Traditional Vocal Album Grammy Award winner), My Way pays homage to one of his heroes.

Willie and Frank were close friends, musical colleagues and mutual admirers of each other’s work throughout Sinatra’s lifetime. In the 1980s, Sinatra opened for Willie at Golden Nugget in Las Vegas and the two of them appeared together in a public service announcement for NASA’s Space Foundation.

“I learned a lot about phrasing listening to Frank,” Willie said recently in an interview for AARP magazine (June/July 2018). “He didn’t worry about behind the beat or in front of the beat, or whatever—he could sing it either way, and that’s the feel you have to have.”

That’s the attitude Willie brings to My Way with abiding classics like “Summer Wind,” “It Was A Very Good Year,” “I’ll Be Around,” “Fly Me To The Moon,” “What Is This Thing Called Love” (a duet with 9 time Grammy winner Norah Jones) and the anthemic title track, Frank done Willie’s way, one master vocalist channeling another.

Eric B. & Rakim’s ‘The Complete Collection’ 8-LP + 2-CD Deluxe Box Set Arrives!

0

In the decades since they exploded on the scene in the mid-1980s, Eric B. & Rakim have been universally recognized as one of hip-hop’s greatest creative units. Eric B.’s distinctive soundscapes, and cuts, and Rakim’s philosophically deep and lyrically complex raps remain unequaled, and the duo’s classic recordings remain a benchmark of the genre.

Although the duo’s albums have remained immensely influential, all have been out of print on vinyl in the U.S. for many years, making the UMe release The Complete Collection 1987-1992 an especially timely package. Not only a monument to Eric B. & Rakim’s larger-than-life catalog, this ten-piece vinyl / CD set is the first U.S. career-encompassing box set for any hip-hop artist.

The Complete Collection 1987-1992 incorporates 2-LP vinyl editions of each of Eric B. & Rakim’s four original albums — 1987’s Paid In Full, 1988’s Follow the Leader, 1990’s Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em and 1992’s Don’t Sweat the Technique — plus two bonus CDs of classic remixes, none of which have ever appeared on an album, and only a handful of which have previously been available digitally. All four LPs and both CDs are housed in a ridged slipcase that also boasts a 36-page book (with 29 vintage photos spanning the group’s career together, as well as liner notes from writers Tom Terrell and Brian Coleman).

The bonus CDs include an impressive 26 vintage remixes, including such influential classics as Coldcut’s “Seven Minutes of Madness” mix for “Paid In Full”; the “Six Minutes of Soul” reworking of “I Know You Got Soul” (by Double Trouble aka Norman “Fatboy Slim” and Danny D; Marley Marl and M.C. Shan’s original 1986 mix of “My Melody”; and “Friends,” Eric B & Rakim’s 1989 Top Ten collaboration with Jody Watley.

Hailing from Queens, New York and Wyandanch, Long Island, respectively, forward-thinking DJ and producer Eric B (born Eric Barrier) and revered lyricist Rakim (born William Michael Griffin Jr.) are, according to AllMusic, “almost universally recognized as the premier DJ/MC team in all of hip-hop.” After debuting with the independently released “Eric B Is President” single in 1986, they would go on to establish themselves as the hardest, most musically complex and most lyrically challenging rap act in the world. Rakim’s rhymes boasted plain-spoken but complex imagery and thought, ambitious internal rhymes, and a smooth, deliberate and unmistakable flow, while Eric’s innovative sonic experimentation was highlighted by his early manipulation of samples, including his pioneering mining of James Brown’s catalogue.

The Complete Collection 1987-1992 is packed to the ceiling with hip-hop classics. The landmark debut Paid In Full, which many fans consider to be the greatest album in hip-hop history, includes the beloved classics “I Know You Got Soul” and “Eric B Is President,” as well as the title track, which inspired no less than 30 remixes. The equally fierce follow-up Follow the Leader boasts such favorites as “Microphone Fiend” and the title track, and expanded the debut album’s minimalistic sound into broader, darker sonic territory. Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em found the pair maintaining their stature on such tracks as “Step Back” and “In the Ghetto.” And Don’t Sweat the Technique brought the twosome’s sound to a plateau with songs like “Pass the Hand Grenade” and “Casualties of War.”

More than three decades after they hit on wax, Eric B. & Rakim have recently started touring together again, and remain one of hip-hop’s seminal acts. The Complete Collection 1987-1992 presents their brilliant body of work the way it was meant to be heard!
