The Bob Lefsetz Podcast This Week Features Giles Martin

0

Giles Martin produced The Beatles’ LOVE album and Cirque du Soleil show, oversaw production of the concert for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in addition to working with many significant musicians. Bob starts the conversation exposing the elephant in the room which is he’s the son of legendary producer for The Beatles George Martin. Despite the apparent nepotism, Giles exudes humility as he shares what it was like to grow up the son of the ‘Fifth Beatle’ who discouraged Giles’ music career before they ultimately worked together. He tells some supremely entertaining stories and proves he is well equipped to serve SONOS as their Head of Sound Experience.

Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Inducts Allister MacGillivray’s “Song for the Mira”

0

The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is pleased to announce a new partnership with the East Coast Music Association, beginning at this year’s East Coast Music Awards: Festival & Conference in Halifax. The two organizations will partner each year to induct a new song written by an East Coast artist into the Hall of Fame, celebrating those who have helped shape the unique sound of East Coast music. This year we are pleased to announce the induction of “Song for the Mira” by Allister MacGillivray, that has made the secluded, picturesque Cape Breton community of Marion Bridge and its Mira River famous the world over.

The induction award will be presented to MacGillivray during the East Coast Music & Industry Awards on Sunday, May 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Nova Scotia Ballroom of the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel. It will also be performed by legendary Cape Breton artist Heather Rankin.

Allister MacGillivray is a Cape Breton Islander (born in Glace Bay), and is a graduate of both Xavier College and St. F.X. University. A songwriter, guitarist, folklorist, author, and record producer, he has served as music director for Celtic television programs out of St. John’s and Halifax. As an accompanist, he has toured internationally with noted traditional musicians such as Tommy Makem & Liam Clancy, John Allan Cameron, and Ryan’s Fancy, and also worked for a short time with Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan.

MacGillivray’s peaceful Celtic ballad “Song For the Mira” was recognized by Billboard magazine as a folk classic, and is a favourite song with roots musicians and choirs in Atlantic Canada and far beyond having been translated into Scots Gaelic, Italian, Japanese and several other languages.

“We’re very excited to partner with the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, especially during our 30th Anniversary event. As we celebrate the best of today’s East Coast artists, it’s also appropriate to look back and recognize accomplished songwriters in our region’s history,” says ECMA Executive Director Andy McLean. “Allister MacGillivray’s ‘Song for the Mira’ is a beautiful composition that embodies our East Coast culture, and we’re very proud to be a part of its induction into the Hall of Fame.”

“The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is partnering this year with our country’s most vibrant music festivals and events to honour the musical heritage of those regions,” says CSHF Executive Director Vanessa Thomas. “We’re thrilled to induct Allister MacGillivray’s iconic ‘Song for the Mira’ into the Hall of Fame, and to be there to celebrate with him, and our partners at the ECMAs, in the province that inspired him.”

Known also by the title “Out On the Mira,” the song has been performed or recorded especially by Nova Scotians such as Denny Doherty, The Men of the Deeps, and Symphony Nova Scotia; by other Canadian acts, such as Amy Cervini, John McDermott, The Elmer Iseler Singers, and The Canadian Tenors; and by Irish singers Foster & Allen, Mary O’Hara, Daniel O’Donnell, and Celtic Thunder. The song was popularized outside of Canada by Nova Scotian icon Anne Murray, who recorded the song on her gold-selling 1982 album Hottest Night of the Year. With Murray’s support, the tune reached international stardom.

Moby to Sell Synth Collection on Reverb and Donating Proceeds Starting Tomorrow!

0

Known for albums such as Play and 18, Moby has solidified his place within the electronica genre, having amassed a large fan base with his ethereal electronica. Last month, he released a his fifteenth studio album Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt. Today, we here at Reverb are excited to announce the launch of the Official Moby Reverb Shop on Thursday, April 26, which will feature over 100 pieces of his personal recording and touring equipment.

“This is the equipment I’ve used to make all my records,” Moby told Reverb. “I have so much equipment, and almost all of it has profound sentimental value to me, including synthesizers I started using in the ‘80s. But rather than keep it all in storage, I want to sell it for a good cause.”

All of Moby’s proceeds from the shop will benefit the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine—an organization dedicated to dramatically changing the way that doctors treat chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer.

Among the items that Moby is parting with is a Roland Jupiter-6 that he calls the “crown jewel” of his synth collection, having used it on “almost every techno record I made, from Go to U.H.F. to Thousand.” Before Moby acquired the Roland, it is fabled to have actually belonged to early techno musician and legendary producer Joey Beltram.

Other synths Moby will be selling include the Yamaha SY22 Vector that Moby used to rework “Laura Palmer’s Theme” from Twin Peaks for his song “Go” (the first single he released under his own name), a Yamaha SY85 he used on “Feeling So Real,” a Roland Juno-106 synth used to create the basslines on song “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?” and “We Are All Made of Stars,” and a rare and unique Serge Series 79 Modular unit.

You can also pick up a couple of Moby’s go-to stringed instruments, such as a 1980s Ibanez Roadster II that was his primary guitar from ‘84 to ‘98, the Fender Precision bass that appears on every record featuring bass guitar from ‘92 to 2013, or even a Harmony Lap Steel Hawaiian-style slide guitar—the sister guitar to one that Moby bought for renowned filmmaker David Lynch.

A couple of miscellaneous pieces include a Casio CZ-1000—one of Moby’s first keyboards from the mid-’80s—as well as two vintage AEA ribbon mics, three rackmounts Oberheim Matrix 1000 analog synths, a Roland Space Echo RE-100, and a rosewood Moog Minimoog Voyager XL reissue.

Be sure to check out the video above to watch Moby show off and talk about some of the gear he’s parting with, and be sure to drop your email address in the signup box above to be the first notified with the shop goes live.

The Royal Foundation is used as the main vehicle for Their Royal Highnesses’ philanthropic activities, including programmes such as Heads Together, Coach Core, and the Endeavour Fund. Ms. Markle will join The Royal Foundation as its fourth Patron following her marriage.

Terry Jacks And Allan Reid To Be Honoured At The Western Canadian Music Awards This October

0

This October, BreakOut West heads back to Kelowna, BC, for the first time since 2010. Now in its 16th year, the gathering continues to develop, support, and honour the best of Western Canadian music, with its annual conference, festival and the Western Canadian Music Awards. Today, the WCMAs announce the 2018 recipients of the Heritage Award – Vancouver music legend, Terry Jacks – and the Kevin Walters Industry Builder Award – Allan Reid, President & CEO of The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), The JUNO Awards, MusiCounts and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

BreakOut West is an annual gathering to celebrate, develop and support the best of western Canadian music, taking place this year in Kelowna, BC from October 10-14, 2018. Western Canadian artists are developing sustainable careers of national and international scope, and BreakOut West is an integral component of this development. Through the annual conference and festival, industry from around the world and western Canadian artists are given the opportunity to discover, educate, network and grow. The event consists of the BreakOut West Festival; showcasing the talent contained in the “left half” of Canada and delivering Western Canadian Music Awards to honoured nominees, and the Conference itself with educational panels, networking events, and so much more.

In the 1980s Terry became involved in the environmental movement, focusing on pulp mill pollution issues in Canada. His environmental work has earned him several awards including one from the United Nations Association of Canada and the Western Canada Wilderness Committee. He was awarded a lifetime achievement award in 1997 for his work, as well as the Eugene Rogers Environmental Award.

Born in Winnipeg and raised in Vancouver, singer/songwriter/record producer, Terry Jacks, pursued his musical interests after trying his hand as a draftsman. In the mid-1960s, he was a singer and guitarist with The Chessmen in local clubs and on CBC TV’s Music Hop, and was the founder, producer and songwriter of the short-lived, Poppy Family. The Poppy Family had international hits with Which Way You Goin’ Billy, and That’s Where I Went Wrong. The former reached #1 in Canada and #2 in the US on the Billboard charts, won the group four JUNO Awards in 1969 for Best Singler, Best “Middle of the Road” Album, Best Group Performance, and Outstanding Sales, and eventually sold over 3 million copies. Terry also owned Poppy Family productions, the publishing company, Gone Fishin’ Music Ltd, and later, Sunfish Publishing, but preferred to work as a producer. He had the biggest hit of his career with his self-produced single, Seasons in the Sun, released under his own label, Goldfish Records, which Terry established in 1974. The song stayed on the charts for 17 weeks in Canada and 15 in the US, reaching #1 on both the adult contemporary and pop Billboard Chards in the US. The single won JUNO Awards for Best Male Vocalist and Best Contemporary/Pop Single in 1974, as well as Best-Selling Single in 1975, and sold more than 14 million copies worldwide.

The Kevin Walters Industry Builder Award is given to a person who has made a significant impact on the music industry through his or her mentorship, training, and/or leadership. Allan Reid is a passionate supporter of Canadian music. Having been in the industry for over 30 years, he holds an essential voice as the President & CEO of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), The JUNO Awards, MusiCounts and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In 2016, Allan’s dedication to artist development was the driving force behind the creation and success of the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class. Prior to taking on his role at CARAS in 2014, Allan served as the Executive Director for MusiCounts, Canada’s music education charity, from 2012-2014. Allan spent 25 years of his career at major and independent labels in Canada as the head of A&R, and was instrumental in the careers of many of today’s top Canadian artists’ careers, including Jann Arden, Sam Roberts Band, Sarah Harmer, and the Tragically Hip, to name a few.

Jacks and Reid will be presented with their awards at the Industry Awards Brunch during BreakOut West in October. The full list of WCMA nominees will be announced on May 2nd, with member voting opening at that time.
