Elvis Costello & The Imposters Announces “Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers” For North American Tour

0

By popular demand, Elvis Costello & The Imposters bring their new show, “Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers,” back for a coast-to-coast North American run of 20 dates this June and July. Last fall, Costello debuted the tour to rave reviews.

The show takes songs from the 1983 album, “Imperial Bedroom” as a starting point, but as Costello told our roving reporter…

“We never intended to recite this book from cover to cover. Listen to our new arrangement of ‘Tears Before Bedtime,’ it gets straight to the real meaning of that song, the way we hear and feel it today. Back in 1982, I might have been a step or two ahead of our crowd in the tragic, romantic stakes but I sense that they’ve all caught up with me now.”

Standout songs from “Imperial Bedroom” like “Beyond Belief,” “Almost Blue” and “Man Out Of Time” have remained in Costello’s repertoire throughout the years, but a blazing electric version of the rarely performed “Pidgin English” was among the many highlights of an initial run of dates that concluded at the Beacon Theatre in New York on the eve of the recent election.

Speaking of the second part of the show’s title, Costello added, “You never know who or what you are going to encounter down the corridor to those ‘Other Chambers.’”

The Imposters – Pete Thomas on drums, Davey Faragher on bass and vocals and Steve Nieve on piano and keyboards – will once again be augmented by accompanying vocalists, Kitten Kuroi and YahZarah.

At recent shows, these singers joined Costello at the microphone for a sparse but beautiful version of “Alison,” while “Everyday I Write The Book” was returned to its original recorded arrangement in a set that goes from hushed ballads to a rock and rhythm finale.

A sensational version of the “Get Happy” song, “King Horse,” Allen Toussaint’s “On Your Way Down,” the Burt Bacharach/Elvis Costello ballad, “This House Is Empty Now” and “American Mirror” from the forthcoming stage musical “A Face In The Crowd” have been among the “Other Chambers” visited so far…

The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit (Black Mamba APU) is a mostly female ranger unit founded with the purpose of protecting wildlife in South Africa. They are on the front-line protecting dwindling numbers of rhino. The Greater Kruger Park is home to largest population of rhino in the world and has become the epicenter of the current rhino poaching crisis. In the last five years 4,000 rhino have been killed. If the current rate continues, rhinos will be extinct in the wild by 2025.

Born in the Manitoba prefecture of Canada, samuraiguitarist, Steve-san Onotera, honed his discipline under the study of the country’s most powerful musical sensei. I don’t think he taught him how to make a guitar out of hockey sticks, though. Pretty great!

Take a video tour of Jack White’s Third Man pressing plant

Third Man Records is proud to announce the official opening of its state-of-the-art vinyl production facility in the heart of Detroit’s historic Cass Corridor neighborhood.. The past year has been spent investing creative energy and passion into crafting a meticulously designed boutique vinyl record production facility with a unique customer experience, providing visual evidence to visitors of vinyl’s beauty and importance. Third Man Pressing is an investment in Third Man Records’ hometown, a neighborhood within a city both rich with musical history, creating a space that is as inspiring as it is prolific.

As the first label to operate a fleet of brand new, environmentally efficient pressing machinery within a purpose-built manufacturing infrastructure, Third Man Pressing minimizes water waste by using recycled water from the record curing process in the air conditioning system, thus creating the only fully climate-controlled pressing plant work environment in the world. Each pressing station is outfitted with a digital touch screen control for temperature, hydraulic compression, and extruder speed, equaling increased control for the highly trained staff as well as a superior product. The plant was engineered to not only be environmentally sustainable, but also community sensitive with its innovative noise reduction construction techniques.

Third Man Pressing brings upwards of 50 new living wage jobs with benefits into Detroit (on top of the 20 jobs already created by the Willy’s building Third Man Records location at large), and, in complement with Shinola’s recent start of production of high-end turntables, marks the triumphant return of the once-thought-lost record industry to one of the country’s great industrial AND musical cities.

The manufacturing facility will not only press vinyl records for Third Man Records’ label releases (which will also continue to be produced at Nashville’s United Record Pressing), but will also fulfill orders from outside labels. The resurgence in popularity of vinyl records has left many small imprints, “bedroom” labels, and independent artists without the ability to press small runs of records in reasonable amounts of time. Third Man Pressing aims to dedicate a percentage of its capacity each month to pressing records for clients of this ilk, alleviating the bottlenecking of the production caused by major label orders, and bringing more niche, regionally-interesting pressings from inspired individuals onto record shelves worldwide.

The inner workings of Third Man Pressing will be on display during Third Man Records Cass Corridor business hours from the storefront’s open-to-the-public viewing platform 7 days a week, with employees always happy to answer questions about the process, and more in-depth tours available in the coming months for those interested. Third Man Records’ mission has always centered around bringing the tangible, the unexpected, and the beautiful back into the business, and the team is beyond thrilled to share the facility, its exceptional product, and its significance with the city it calls home.

Glen Campbell’s Albums “Gentle On My Mind,” “Wichita Lineman” And “Galveston” To Be Reissued On Vinyl

0

Gentle on My Mind, Wichita Lineman and Galveston, the star-making albums that helped make Glen Campbell a global superstar and household name, will be reissued on vinyl on March 24 via Capitol Nashville/UMe. The three titles, which haven’t been available on vinyl for decades, will be released on standard black vinyl and housed in replicas of the original sleeve art.

Gentle on My Mind, released in 1967 on Capitol Records, was Campbell’s breakthrough album. It was the first to go to No. 1 on the country music charts and reach the platinum sales mark of one million albums sold. At its heart was the single, “Gentle on My Mind,” a cover of John Hartford’s original that so enchanted Campbell, he called in some of his buddies from his legendary studio band, The Wrecking Crew (which included Leon Russell), and recorded it himself to submit to his producer Al De Lory. His first major hit, the song earned him his first two Grammy Awards and made the Arkansas native a rising star.

Released as Campbell was becoming a television star, film actor and crossover sensation, Wichita Lineman remains Campbell’s best-selling album. The double-platinum release reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and stayed there for a month (bracketed by Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland and only unseated by The Beatles (The White Album). Wichita Lineman stayed atop the country music charts for 20 weeks and was the year’s top release in the genre. Centerpiece single, “Wichita Lineman,” written by Campbell’s songwriting soulmate Jimmy Webb, was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards and Single of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. In 2000, the title track – one of Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” – was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Campbell teamed up with Webb again for two hits on his next album, Galveston, released in 1969. The title track returned to No. 1 and was a crossover hit. The duo logged another minor hit with the follow up single, “Where’s the Playground Susie.” Campbell’s last platinum-selling album of his late-1960s run arrived as he began to host his own television variety show, “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour,” and became a household name in the U.S.

Taken together, Gentle on My Mind, Wichita Lineman and Galveston capture the Country Music and Musicians Halls of Fame member at the height of his powers. A country superstar, a member of The Beach Boys with his fingerprints on music history, one of pop’s greatest guitar players – all his personas can be found on this amazing run of albums.
