Stephen Stills And Judy Collins Release First-Ever Album Together, And They’re Touring

0

Judy Collins and Stephen Stills first met in 1967 and quickly fell into a tumultuous love affair that would be immortalized in Stephen’s song ā€œSuite: Judy Blue Eyes.ā€ Out September 22 on Wildflower / Cleopatra Records, ā€˜Stills & Collins’ marks the first album the two icons and longtime friends have recorded together. The loving, playful and emotional album finds Judy and Stephen performing refreshed versions of songs that tie their whimsical 50-year history together, plus a brand new song penned by Judy for this album, and a refined take by both artists on classics by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Traveling Wilburys and more. Judy and Stephen have announced their first-ever tour together as well, which begins July 26 outside of Chicago and continues into November.

ā€˜Stills & Collins’ is bursting with songs that illustrate a rich history between the two legends. ā€œWho Knows Where The Time Goes,ā€ from Judy’s 1968 album of the same name, was the first song Judy and Stephen ever recorded together. Stills first recorded ā€œJudyā€ in a demo session immediately following Judy’s ā€˜Who Knows Where The Time Goes’ session, in the very same studio. This demo tape was lost for years and later issued as the ā€˜Just Roll Tape’ album. ā€œSo Begins The Taskā€ is another Stills original that also appears on the ā€˜Just Roll Tape’ demo. The song was later recorded for Stills’ Manassas debut, and for ā€˜CSN 2012.’ Judy recorded ā€œSo Begins The Taskā€ as well, for 1973’s ā€˜True Stories and Other Dreams.’ She wrote ā€œHousesā€ about her relationship with Stephen, a standout track from her landmark release, 1975’s Platinum-selling ā€˜Judith.’

The album also features duets over classic songs such as Bob Dylan’s ā€œGirl From The North Country.ā€ Judy, known for her early interpretations of Leonard Cohen’s work, selected ā€œEverybody Knowsā€ for this album – her first time recording it. Stephen and Judy sing over a soaring version of Traveling Wilburys’ ā€œHandle With Care.ā€ The song ā€œQuestionsā€ was written by Stills and recorded for Buffalo Springfield’s ā€˜Last Time Around,’ and later revisited on the second section of ā€œCarry On,ā€ from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s ā€˜DĆ©jĆ  Vu.’

And finally – Judy penned a brand new song for this album, ā€œRiver Of Gold.ā€ ā€˜Stills & Collins’ was recorded at West Lake Studios in West Hollywood, and was produced by Stephen Stills, Judy Collins, Marvin Etzioni and Alan Silverman. It features Russell Walden on piano, Kevin McCormick on bass, and Tony Beard on drums.

ā€˜Stills & Collins’ will be released on the heels of a very busy period for Collins, who released an album in 2015 and 2016. 2015’s ā€˜Strangers Again’ earned Judy her highest Billboard 200 debut in almost 30 years, and 2016’s ā€˜Silver Skies Blue’ duets album with Ari Hest earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Folk Album. She’s recently been described by the NY Times as the ā€œageless wild angel of pop,ā€ appeared in HBO’s Girls, and released the book ā€˜Cravings: How I Conquered Food’ earlier this year.

Stills is known for his work with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and his solo work. In addition to ā€œSuite: Judy Blue Eyes,ā€ Still is best known for the hits ā€œ For What It’s Worthā€ by Buffalo Springfield and ā€œLove The One You’re Withā€ from his solo debut, Stephen Stills. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and ranked #28 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s ā€œThe 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time.ā€ He also has the added distinction of being the first artist to be inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame twice in one night (for his work with CSN and Buffalo Springfield).

Dave Grohl’s Daughter Just Played The Drums With The Band Onstage. She’s 8.

0

I’ve got another confession to make!
Dad, please don’t tell so loud. It’s kinda embarassing.

Dave Grohl asked the usual drummer of The Foo Fighters while the band performed in Iceland last week to step aside for a moment. An 8-year-old girl named Harper stepped behind the kit, and did a great job. She also just happens to be Dave’s daughter.

Winners of IHEARTRADIO International Duo or Group of the Year Imagine Dragons also delivered an electric performance with local drum line 416BEATS on a medley of their hits ā€œBelieverā€ and ā€œThunderā€.

MMVA performers and presenters joined in, posting about their experiences on social feeds, including presenter Nikki Bella who shouted out Much’s own Tyrone Edwards on Twitter, and MMVA host Joe Jonas who shared a fun backstage moment. Fans also made their voice heard this year, with more than 16 million votes for the award’s four Fan Fave categories cast across Twitter, Instagram, and on Much.com

In its inaugural year via a partnership with Twitter, the IHEARTRADIO MMVA PRE-GAME, hosted by Much Digital Studios creators Alayna Fender, Dan Rodo, Marlon Palmer, and Michael Rizzi, was first to hand out the hardware before the big show. Twelve awards were handed out on Twitter during the live pre-show, including the first MMVA for A Tribe Called Red, who along with Director Kevan Funk were awarded with the Best Director Award for their video Stadium Pow Wow.

Leonard Cohen speaks in 1974 on the wild and winding paths of the creative process

0

Pacifica Radio has an incredible interview with Leonard Cohen from December 4, 1974. That year, Cohen would meet an important young musician and producer John Lissauer that produced Cohen’s landmark record New Skin For the Old Ceremony in 1974. It is on this tour that Leonard Cohen did an interview with Pacifica Radio WBAI producer Kathleen Kendel. It should be noted that as Leonard Cohen mentions his friendship with musician Judy Collins, Collins had a show on Pacifica Radio WBAI called simply The Judy Collins show in at least 1965.

The Leonard Cohen interview as a whole is amazing because of how early it was in his career and how intelligent and compelling the line of questioning was by Kathleen Kendel, but a few things stand out in this interview. 1974 was basically at ground zero in the middle of the second wave of Feminism, and Kathleen Kendel takes the opportunity to engage Leonard Cohen on the possibility of sexism in his song Joan of Arc. The questions stirs Cohen to a thoughtful response.

It’s very hard to really untangle the real reasons why you do anything. But I was always interested in music and it seemed to me I always played guitar. I always associated song and singing with some sort of nobility of spirit. The first songs I learned were of the workers movement. I always thought that this was the best way to say the most important things… I don’t mean the most ponderous or pompous things. I mean the important things — like how you feel about things, how you feel about someone else — and I always thought this was the way to do it.

It’s also very difficult to untangle influences because you represent the sum of everything you’ve seen or heard or experienced. The kind of language that I’d like to have been influenced by the Bible and Cervantes, by the old masters. The kind of sensibility I’ve been influenced [by], of course, [is] a great deal by the French writers — Camus, Sartre — the Irish poets — Yeats — the English poets. And, of course, we had our own little group of poets in Montreal years back, all very fine, one man especially standing out — I think one of the finest writers in the language — Irving Leighton. I don’t think he’s known [outside Canada] at all.

Patti Smith on How Writing Poems Are Different From Songwriting

0

How is writing poems different from writing songs?

Patti Smith:Ā Poetry is a solitary process. One does not write poetry for the masses. Poetry is a self-involved, lofty pursuit. Songs are for the people. When I’m writing a song, I imagine performing it. I imagine giving it. It’s a different aspect of communication. It’s for the people.

We always write a certain amount of poetry for the masses. When Allen Ginsberg wrote ā€œHowl,ā€ he didn’t write it for himself. He wrote it to speak out. To make a move, to wake people up. I think rock & roll, as our cultural voice, took that energy and made it even more accessible.

When I’m sitting down to write a poem, I’m not thinking of anyone. I’m not thinking about how it will be received. I’m not thinking it will make people happy or it will inspire them. I’m in a whole other world. A world of complete solitude. But when I’m writing a song, I imagine performing it. I imagine giving it. It’s a different aspect of communication. It’s for the people.

I write songs when I’m by myself, like walking along the beach, and a song comes in my head. Or I wake up from a dream, like ā€œBlakean Year.ā€ I often write songs out of dreams, and take them to my musicians to help me. Sometimes I write melodies that are too complex and I can’t find them on the guitar, because I only know about eight chords. So I take them to Lenny [Kaye] or Tony [Shanahan, her bassist] and they transcribe them into a song.

ā€œFree Moneyā€ came to me walking down St. Mark’s at three in the morning. It was pre-dawn, but it was so light in New York City, and it came to me and I sang it to Lenny. He structured it and found the proper chords, and we made a song. It was one of our earliest songs.

Other songs, they just come in my head and I sing them out loud, and the band finds the place, and they adjust it. For myself, the simpler format the better. ā€œGandhiā€ is nine minutes on one chord. It’s an improvisation. ā€œRadio Baghdadā€ was completely improvised. I didn’t know the lyrics, but I knew I wanted to speak out against the invasion of Iraq. Being a mother, I freely entered into the mother consciousness of the mothers of Baghdad who were trying to comfort their children as they were being bombed. So these lyrics that come to me are self-perpetuated.
