Ever Wanted To Know Why Pop-tarts Without Frosting Have More Calories Than Those With Frosting? Here You Go

0

Here’s something I’ve never, ever thought about before, but once I heard about this, always wondered in the back of my mind, since I already know how Caramilk gets the caramel in the chocolate bar. At 210 calories, an unfrosted strawberry Pop-Tart had 10 more calories per serving than its frosted counterpart.

The question has gone viral online, with a few blogs looking to capture an answer. After contacting Kellogg’s, Quartz finally has solved the mystery of the unfrosted Pop-Tarts.

“Unfrosted Pop-Tarts have a slightly thicker crust to compensate for the lack of frosting, resulting in a few more calories per serving,” a Kellogg’s representative told Quartz in an email. It compensates for its sad lack of frosting in several ways, the representative said: “the overall composition of the food, including weight, breakability, toastabilty.”

Hear Sly Stone doing his radio show on San Francisco’s KSOL in 1967

0

In the mid-1960s, Stone worked as a disc jockey for San Francisco, California soul radio station KSOL, where he included white performers such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones into his playlists. During the same period, he worked as a staff record producer for Autumn Records, producing for San Francisco-area bands such as The Beau Brummels, The Mojo Men, Bobby Freeman, and Grace Slick’s first band, the Great Society. Stone was influential in guiding KSOL-AM into soul music and started calling the station K-SOUL. The second was a popular soul music station (sans the K-SOUL moniker), at 107.7 FM (now known as KSAN).

So, he knew what was goin’ on. Below, you can hear nearly an hour of Stone broadcasting on KSOL in 1967. It’s an MP3 of a tape of an AM radio broadcast, so gather round the speakers, kid, and marvel to what free-form radio was truly all about.

Duran Duran Announce New Album “Paper Goods” Due September 18

0

Multi-platinum superstars Duran Duran will release their 14th studio album, Paper Gods. on September 18th through Warner Bros. Records. Singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor recorded the album in London with producers Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Josh Blair, and Mr Hudson. The record features special guests Janelle Monáe (on the first single “Pressure Off”), former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, Canadian Juno-Award winning singer Kiesza, British singer/songwriter Mr Hudson, violinist Davidé Rossi and actress Lindsay Lohan. The album was mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent. Paper Gods will be available for pre-order and “Pressure Off” will be available for purchase at all participating digital retailers and DuranDuran.com this week.

The songs on Paper Gods capture the duality and sense of conflict at the heart of Duran Duran’s music. “It really goes back to that strange early Duran mix: the hard-edged pop, coexisting with this dark, weird, experimental side,” John says. “That’s something that’s essential to all of us,” Nick adds. “It’s great to be able to lift people’s spirits – and your own – with a strong shot of pure pop, but the world we live in isn’t all just made of that stuff, so it seems natural to me that we have kept one foot in the darker, more Gothic side of life.”

Early sessions for Paper Gods began in 2013, with Mark Ronson and engineer Josh Blair once again joining the band in their south London recording studio, as they had for 2011’s All You Need is Now, which was produced by Ronson. When Ronson was called away to begin working on his own album, Duran Duran and Blair hooked up with the Kanye West/Jay-Z collaborator Ben “Mr” Hudson, and the sessions caught fire. In the summer of 2014, Ronson returned once more to the project, adding long-time Duran collaborator, Nile Rodgers to the mix for two of the album’s standout tracks. The remaining songs were co-produced by Josh Blair and the band.

“We found a whole new level of inspiration on this album,” says Rhodes. “We’ve allowed ourselves the time to make music that we can be proud of,” adds Le Bon. “I judge what we release by my favourite albums – Horses, Harvest, Let It Bleed, Blue, Transformer, Aladdin Sane. Those are classic albums. The only rule is it’s got to be music you can live with for the rest of your life.”

CHIC co-founder Nile Rodgers and Mark Ronson co-wrote, and produced the tracks “Pressure Off” and “Only in Dreams.” Rodgers also features on the first single from what will be the band’s 14th studio release. The former harks back to the taut funk of Duran Duran’s 1986 album Notorious, which was also co-produced by Rodgers. “Notorious was a strong touchstone for the band,” says Roger Taylor. All You Need is Now definitely reflected our earlier albums, but our starting point here was Notorious. We’re fortunate to be able to be inspired by our own back catalogue – not many bands can say that.”

In a collaboration overseen by China Chow, the band worked closely with Los Angeles-based artist Alex Israel, who created the album’s cover art. It features a collage of images that reference the visual history of Duran Duran, each placed like a sticker on a reproduction of Israel’s “Sky Backdrop” painting. The logo and graphic design are by Brian Roettinger.

Vanessa Carlton releases EP Blue Pool July 24 + reveals New Track on NYLON

0

Vanessa Carlton (one of my personal faves and extremely fun person on Twitter) announces the release of her upcoming EP titled Blue Pool available July 24 via Dine Alone Records. The EP gives fans a first look at her upcoming full length album Liberman out this October. NYLON premiered the title track today along with the artwork and track listing HERE.

“This whole album is paired down and minimalist and this song is an example of how you can turn a traditional piano vocal song into something else,” says Vanessa. “Also I’m a big Philip Glass fan and I love how Steve Osborne (Liberman producer & mixer) was able to turn my swirly piano part at the end into this slippery sounding kaleidoscope.”

The EP features songs “Take It Easy” and “Blue Pool” which will be found on the upcoming album as well as live living room sessions of “Operator” and “Nothing Where Something Used To Be.” A complete catalog of the Living Room Sessions will be available on a deluxe version of the album in October.
These tracks reflect Vanessa’s current state of mind since moving from NYC to Nashville, marrying husband John McCauley (Deer Tick) and having a baby girl. The simple instrumentation mixed with her wistful vocals and poignant lyrics bring you into her world and showcase a new side to this accomplished songwriter.

Carlton also recently signed with Dine Alone Records joining the independent label’s roster of like-minded artists. She introduced her evolved sound to fans with the track “Young Heart” which marked the first new music release for Carlton on her new label, which you can watch HERE.

More details will be announced as they become available. For more information on tour dates, please visit vanessacarlton.com

Blue Pool Track Listing

  1. Take It Easy
  2. Blue Pool
  3. Operator (Live Living Room Session)

What’s in Prince’s secret vault? Rows and rows of music

0

Prince may not want to talk about the vault, but there’s a whole bunch of Purple people who do.

Susan Rogers, Prince’s former sound engineer, tells me the vault predates the superstar status Prince attained with the movie Purple Rain in 1984. “I started the vault!” she says. “I joined Prince in 1983 when he was preparing to do Purple Rain. I realised it would be smart for me to get his tapes together in one place. I was aware there were a lot of pieces missing. It became an obsession. I wanted us to have everything he’d ever recorded. I called up the studios he’d been using and said: ‘Have you got any Prince tapes’? This is his legacy. We need to protect these things. It’s an actual bank vault, with a thick door. It’s in the basement of Paisley Park. When I left in 87, it was nearly full. Row after row of everything we’d done. I can’t imagine what they’ve done since then.”

Marc Maron Gets Animated In Video Talking About Iggy Pop

Jerry Seinfeld Rants Against ‘Creepy PC’ Culture: They Don’t Even Know What ‘Racist’ Means

0

Jerry Seinfeld doesn’t play colleges and has no plans to do so in the near future because of how politically-correct kids are these days.

Following his much-talked about comments from last week about college students becoming too politically correct, Jerry Seinfeld elaborated his point during Late Night with Seth Meyers Tuesday night. When Seth Meyers noted that there are more people than ever now who will “let you know you went over the line” in comedy than ever before, Seinfeld agreed.

“And they keep moving the lines in, for no reason,” Seinfeld said, citing the uncomfortable feeling he now gets from his audience when he tells his joke about people who scroll through their phone like a “gay French king.”

“Are you kidding me?” he asked. “I could imagine a time where people say, ‘Well, that’s offensive to suggest that a gay person moves their hands in a flourishing motion and you now need to apologize.’ I mean, there’s a creepy PC thing out there that really bothers me.”
