Lover Girls Flyana Boss Gush Over Their “Candyman” In New Bop Out Now

0

Breakout rap duo Flyana Boss drops their first single of 2024, “Candyman”, available everywhere now via vnclm_ x Atlantic Records. Bobbi and Folayan gush over their “candyman” all while spitting witty bars over the infectious beat produced by their hit-making collaborator, Marky Style.

“The cat is out of the bag, it’s time the world know, we’re true lover girls at heart and ‘Candyman’ is for all the sweethearts out there.” – Flyana Boss

The duo will hit the road again, following their first tour run as support for Janelle Monáe’s “The Age Of Pleasure” Tour and surprise guest run on Ke$ha’s “The Only Love” Tour, this time with their own headlining show. The 18-city tour kicks off on February 24, 2024 at Schubas Tavern in Chicago, IL. The viral sensations will make stops in their home cities of Detroit and Dallas, in addition to Toronto, Brooklyn, Washington D.C., Denver, and more before wrapping the tour in their home-base, Los Angeles.

Hailing from Detroit, MI and Dallas, TX respectively, Bobbi and Folayan met at a music college in Los Angeles where they immediately hit it off and began collaborating. The fierce duo adopted the name Flyana Boss (rhymes with Diana Ross), repping the Vagina Dynasty while simultaneously embodying the spirit of flyness and bossness. Together, Bobbi and Folayan form a formidable union that pushes the boundaries of contemporary hip-hop, seamlessly blending their individual strengths to create a sound that is distinctively Flyana Boss. Bobbi brings a knack for storytelling and infuses her music with authenticity and vulnerability as Folayan effortlessly switches between different styles and genres, adding depth and dimension to Flyana Boss’ one-of-a-kind music.

Alt-Pop Artist Artemas Shares New Single “ur special to me”

0

Today, self-taught songwriter/producer Artemas shares his latest high energy, explosive single, “ur special to me.” Listen HERE via 10K Projects.

With its rumbling bassline and hard-hitting drums, Artemas’ new track “ur special to me” combines his grunge sensibilities with pop ear worm melodies. Like much of the London-based musician’s infectious creations, the new track is an esoteric approach to pop music, fusing Artemas’ influences seamlessly through his unique voice, production style, and songwriting. Contrasting intoxicating, breathy falsetto lines over a distorted bass and hard-hitting drums, he creates a mysterious, dark anthem that blurs the boundaries of genre. Along with the brand new song, Artemas has announced his upcoming mixtape which includes previously released tracks like “if u think I’m pretty” “just want u to feel something” and “cross my heart.”

If Artemas’ dazzling falsetto sounds familiar, it’s most likely because of his inescapable smash “if u think i’m pretty,” which has racked up an astonishing 45 million streams and over 100K TikTok videos since its release in October. Coming out of massive highs from last year’s release, he dropped “prettygrunge.wav” the grunge version of his massive hit “if u think I’m pretty,” deviating from the formula of releasing a sped-up and slowed-down version of each song. Earlier this week, he debuted on Zane Lowe’s “24 for ‘24” – a roster curated by Lowe and Jeremy Degan to spotlight the new artists to watch in 2024.

Since releasing a song nearly every month since May, the pop savant hailed by Ones to Watch as “one of the most consistent new artists in recent memory” has racked up tens of millions of streams and built a strong community through the power of the internet.

At 24-years-old, Artemas, has only been releasing music since late 2020 but is fast developing a distinctive alternative pop sound through his relatable songwriting and captivating melodies. The self-taught multi-instrumentalist and unashamed pop music fan is a student of the YouTube generation of songwriters/producers. Hailing from Oxfordshire, but now based in London, Artemas made the most of being restricted to his bedroom over the past couple of years, spending most waking hours during that time honing his studio craft. With recent singles “cross my heart” and “if you think i’m pretty” amassing tens of millions of streams, and over 4.5 million monthly Spotify listeners, Artemas looks ahead to 2024 ready to deliver his best work yet.

The 24-year-old musician’s dark R&B leanings transport listeners right into quiet night drives, lingering glances in the club, and the anticipatory feeling after the door lock clicks. “ur special to me,” which is just as much Fiona Apple as it is The Weeknd, is another notch in Artemas’ belt that’s sure to satisfy fans and create new ones.

Next month Artemas will make his headline debut at London’s The Lower Third with tickets selling out in under 20 mins for the two shows on 14th & 16th Feb, with the promise of more live shows to follow.

Karan Aujla Releases “Making Memories (Unplugged),” Acoustic Offering Following Acclaimed Studio Album

0

Today, Karan Aujla treats his fans as he unveils an acoustic offering of songs from his acclaimed Making Memories album.

The stripped down, unplugged rendition hears Karan Aujla perform “Bachke,” “Admirin’ You,” and “What…?” in a fresh new way, adding new life and meaning to the trio of songs.

“I knew these three singles were the perfect ones to perform acoustically and I hope fans enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed performing them,” Karan says of his curation.

Rounding out a groundbreaking year, Karan Aujla ended 2023 by collaborating with Grammy Award winning DJ and producer Tiësto for an official remix of “Softly” – listen here. The remix premiered at Etihad Park in the first after-race concert of this year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix where more than 20,000 fans gave the sound of approval.

2023 was a major year for Karan Aujla. His second studio album Making Memories hit #1 on Apple Music in India and Canada; debuted at #3 on the Spotify Global Top Album Chart and hit #1 on Apple Music in India and Canada. He was the first Indian artist to cover Apple’s New Music Daily global playlist with an exclusive interview on the Zane Lowe show. Making Memories has now surpassed 313 million streams and celebrates a new era of Punjabi music as Karan Aujla and executive producer Ikky portray the perfect fusion of western sounds and traditional Punjabi language.

Karan Aujla was born and raised in the village of Ghurala in Northern Punjab amidst the rural and farm lifestyle. At a young age, both of Aujla’s parents passed away and creating rhymes and writing was a pacifier and escape for Karan. When he discovered Punjabi folk music after his parent’s death, he was ultimately inspired to delve into the world of songwriting and realized that he had a unique talent with the pen. Karan Aujla relocated to British Columbia, Canada and during his high school years, he was sought out by many Punjabi artists as a songwriter and would go on to write several singles for the most prominent Punjabi artists at the time. With fate at work, one of Karan’s songs as a full-fledged artist rather than writer garnered international buzz in the Punjabi community worldwide. His debut album, BacTHAfuKUP (B.T.F.U.), released in 2021, highlights his vocal prowess in unison with trance-like Punjabi folk production. This album solidified his place as a global ambassador of Punjabi music worldwide, with a hundred million streams across streaming platforms, and #6 placement on Spotify’s Global Chart. That same year, Karan was dubbed India’s most prominent artist as he was ranked #38 on the Global Digital Artist Ranking. Karan is approaching over 3 billion views on YouTube, has garnered over one billion audio streams, and 8 million followers across his social media channels. Equipped with a love of traditional folk Punjabi music and an affinity for melodic hip-hop and trap R&B from moving to Canada – Karan’s sonic essence elevated to uncharted heights. His cumulative musical experience has resulted in a fusion of Punjabi and North American sounds, where Karan serves as a cultural bridge.

Lum Navigates Complex Ties Of Love And Friendship In New Pop-Rap Release “Motions”

0

Taking the new year by storm, LUM stirs the pot of emotions with “Motions”, a pop-rap journey through relational tides produced by award winning rap producer BNoise (Rylo Rodriguez, NoCap). “Motions” is an anthem steeped in resilience, resonating with the heart’s complex bonds—family, friends, love.

Hot on the heels of hits like “Temptation” and “4 Sho”, which allowed LUM to grace the likes of Amazon Music’s Rotation North and Toronto’s Yonge/Dundas Square, his latest release explores his vulnerable side – the relatable story, a testament to the steadfast beat of life’s relentless pulse. Previously touted by DSPs such as Apple Music’s Rap Life, The Plug and Superbloom, LUM’s artistry glides with “Motions,” a single that not only highlights his melodic versatility but promises fans a gripping musical experience. Listen to “Motions” HERE.

For Windsor rapper-singer LUM, relatability is the key to success. The 20-year-old artist is one of the first out of Windsor to gain buzz, and with his future tracks, his knack for catchy hooks and grounded lyricism captures the pains and triumphs of love and happiness. Channeling his pain from a period of homelessness as a teenager and a lack of support around him, Lum acknowledges that: “Nobody’s really done hip-hop or music outta my city like that,” he explains. “It’ll allow [younger kids from my city] to be like ‘Yo, if he can do it, I can do it. I’m not alone.’” The influence he’s gleaned from studio sessions with exciting talent is evident in his voice, but LUM isn’t content to put himself in a box. His brand of edifying, emotionally raw music is universal; and he’s excited to connect with fans of rap, R&B, pop and beyond.

Rounding out 2023 on a high note, several accolades and hard hitting collaborations created well deserved buzz for the rising star.  The cross-border collaboration “Temptation” with LUM, Warner Music Australia artist Oliver Cronin, and independent artist KILJ explored the unique worlds of the three artists, seamlessly blending originality with authenticity. The release of his melodic hip-hop ballad “4 SHO” saw an organic collaboration with Dom Vallie, a Toronto artist whose talent LUM has closely admired.

LUM was named Amazon Music’s Breakthrough Canadian artist in July 2023, and was selected for the cover of SoundCloud’s emerging artist playlist The Lookout.’ Performing as a direct support for Snotty Nose Rez Kids during their Hot Planet Winter 2024 tour dates earlier this month, which included a sold out tour date, 2024 promises to be a breakout year for the Windsor-born artist.

Sam Cooke’s ‘SAR Records Story 1959-1965’ Available On Vinyl For The First Time Ever February 9

0

Originally released by ABKCO as a 2-CD set in 1994, Sam Cooke’s SAR Records Story 1959-1965 is finally being made available on vinyl as a 4-LP set on February 9. This collection gathers significant recordings of SAR Records – the label Sam Cooke co-founded, produced the majority of records for, and was instrumental in operating before his untimely death in December 1964. Groundbreaking artists such as The Soul Stirrers, Johnnie Taylor, Billy Preston, and Bobby Womack’s group The Valentinos are all featured, in addition to Sam himself. “The whole SAR Records Story is infused with Sam Cooke’s rapturous sense of how sacred gospel and sexual soul flow together, unbroken,” stated Milo Miles on NPR’s Fresh Air upon the set’s initial release almost three decades ago.

In an era where black-owned labels were a rarity, Los Angeles-based SAR Records was founded at almost exactly the same time as Motown, its Detroit counterpart. SAR was established in 1959 by Sam Cooke, music publisher J.W. Alexander, and S. Roy Crain, Cooke’s road manager and founder of gospel group The Soul Stirrers. The acronymous name standing for Sam Alex Roy, SAR sought to keep gospel music alive while simultaneously crossing over to pop audiences in the secular world. LPs 1 and 2 of the set focus on the former, while LPs 3 and 4 encompass the latter. From choosing talent, to writing a great number of songs, to producing, SAR was entirely the fulfillment of Cooke’s vision on a musical/creative level. The superstar singer, who had already crossed over from the gospel world himself, tirelessly coached the vocalists during SAR recording sessions, emphasizing diction. His methods are heard throughout the collection, as he is heard speaking to artists between takes.

Formed in 1926 and having already gone through many iterations including a run in the ‘50s with pre-solo career Sam Cooke, The Soul Stirrers, now including Cooke’s replacement Johnnie Taylor, recorded songs for SAR in Chicago such as “Wade In The Water” and “Stand By Me Father.” By 1960, Johnnie Taylor had also left for a solo career and was replaced by Jimmie Outler, with both acts remaining on the label. Taylor, who is best known for his 1968 Stax hit “Who’s Making Love,” performs “Keep On Loving You,” “Rome (Wasn’t Built In A Day)” and “You Can Run (But You Can’t Hide)” among other selections by him on SAR Records Story.

Johnnie Morisette was a blues singer from Mobile, AL nicknamed “Two Voice” for his ability to alternate between his natural voice and a falsetto. Morisette’s cover of Albert King’s “Don’t Throw Your Love On Me So Strong” features a solo by Johnny “Guitar” Watson, long before his own 1977 R&B hit “A Real Mother For Ya.” Johnnie Morisette’s biggest hit “Meet Me at the Twistin’ Place” (1962) was written by Sam Cooke in the midst of the dance craze, before being re-worked and re-recorded by its composer as “Meet Me At Mary’s Place” two years later.

“Put Me Down Easy” was written by Sam Cooke for his younger brother L.C. Cooke, who was also a SAR artist. It has recently gained notoriety with its inclusion in the 2020 Regina King-directed film One Night In Miami…, which depicts Leslie Odom Jr. as the elder Cooke singing the tune. The Simms Twins, who sang backup on Sam Cooke’s “Cupid,” had a minor hit for SAR with “Soothe Me,” which was covered in ’66 by Sam & Dave. They cited brothers Bobbie and Kenny Simms as a big influence on their own call-and-response vocal style.

As a 16-year-old keyboard prodigy, Billy Preston briefly recorded for SAR sub-label Derby Records. “Greazee Part I & II,” an instrumental from 1963 — more than a half-decade before he worked with The Beatles on the Get Back sessions that became Let It Be — is included on SAR Records Story. Cincinnatian soul singer Mel Carter was also on the Derby imprint in ’63, releasing “When A Boy Falls In Love” before finding greater success a few years later with the Top 10 hit “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” for Imperial Records.

Cleveland gospel group The Womack Brothers, consisting of five siblings including singer/guitarist Bobby (who would go onto R&B chart-topping success with “Lookin’ For a Love”), recorded for SAR before Sam re-christened them The Valentinos. This secular incarnation of the group had a minor hit with “It’s All Over Now,” co-written by Bobby Womack and his sister-in-law Shirley Womack, which concludes SAR Records Story. The Rolling Stones soon thereafter covered “It’s All Over Now,” scoring their first of many UK #1 hits.

While Sam Cooke himself was never signed to his own label, he obtained the rights to unreleased masters recorded under Keen Records in place of unpaid royalties. These tracks were put out on SAR and are included on this box set, along with a demo version of his #1 1957 hit “You Send Me.”

Sam Cooke’s SAR Records Story 1959-1965 contains comprehensive liner notes written by music historian Peter Guralnick, who has since gone on to author Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke, published in 2005. In Guralnick’s summation of SAR, he writes that the label “sought a way to broaden the appeal of gospel music while introducing the techniques of gospel into the world of pop.”

Carlene Carter To Headline Transatlantic Sessions Tour

0

Country/Americana singer-songwriter Carlene Carter has just been announced as a headlining act on Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024, taking place across the UK between February 2 and 11. The intercontinental lineup celebrates the rich music traditions connecting Scotland, Ireland and the US.

First conceived as series of live music television productions in 1995 for the BBC, Transatlantic Sessions has since expanded into a ticketed touring event all over the UK. This year’s nine date trek begins in Scotland on Feb 2 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, before heading to Edinburgh and winding its way south through the English cities of Gateshead, Buxton, Bristol, Liverpool and Birmingham, culminating on Feb 11 at Royal Festival Hall in London. In addition to Carlene Carter, Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024 will include progressive Irish folk singer-songwriter Joshua Burnside, Gaelic singer Kim Carnie, Canadian folk duo Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves, and a house band led by Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas. Transatlantic Sessions alumni from previous years include Alison Krauss, Béla Fleck, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Iris Dement, James Taylor, Joan Osborne, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Rufus Wainwright.

Carlene Carter has been releasing music for more than four decades. The daughter of June Carter Cash and country star Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, she became a singer in The Carter Family at 17. With the release of her first several albums, she established herself on the edgier end of the country music spectrum, having recorded in England with Graham Parker’s band The Rumour and Nick Lowe’s Rockpile. Working with producer Howie Epstein (of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Carlene Carter became Nashville’s homecoming queen of 1990 when her rockin’ “I Fell In Love” topped the country singles and video charts, and the album was named one of the year’s 10 best by Time, People, and Stereo Review. Award nominations followed for the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist, and Best Country Vocal Performance, Female (for the I Fell In Love album) at the 1991 Grammy Awards. Her dynamic personality made her a natural as VH1’s first country video hostess with her own daily hour, The Carlene Carter Show, and she had another smash hit single and video with “Every Little Thing,” from Little Love Letters, in 1993. She has been releasing albums and touring steadily since and was prominently featured in Ken Burns’ Country Musicminiseries in 2019.

In advance of Carlene Carter’s departure to the UK, Paramount+ will premiere June on January 16. Directed by Emmy® Award-winner Kristen Vaurio, this feature-length documentary about country singer-songwriter June Carter Cash features rare and never-before-seen archival material that reveals the extraordinary life work of a monumental woman and her iconic entertainment career. Featuring interviews with the star herself, as well as family members, including daughter Carlene, as well as friends like Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon and Willie Nelson, June shines a spotlight on the history of country music and the mark the Carter and Cash families made on the genre.

“This film offers a great opportunity to realize that June was a star of television and music from an early age—decades before she became ‘Mrs. Johnny Cash,’” Carlene Carter said. “While some may not fully be aware of her many talents, influence, and juost how much she mattered as an entertainer, this lovely documentary offers clear insight for everyone to see the true character and the joy she shared.”

Beverly Glenn-Copeland receives Canadian Artists Network’s 2023 Robert Johnston Visionary Artist Award

0

The Canadian Artists Network is proud to announce Beverly Glenn-Copeland as this year’s recipient of the Robert Johnston Visionary Artist Award. The Award is given annually to an artist whose exemplary work, produced away from the spotlight of the moment and without fanfare, has been a notable source of inspiration to others in the arts and/or whose visionary contributions to the arts and broader communities have been made in under-acknowledged or ‘behind the scenes’ roles.

Beverly Glenn-Copeland has had a significant impact across many spheres over his fifty-year career as a singer, songwriter, recording artist, and transgender advocate. As an artist, he has masterfully blended genres and expanded musical horizons, pushing boundaries and using his passion for nature and science, to craft a distinct sound. As a trans artist with a diverse cultural heritage, he has been a passionate supporter of Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ2S+ communities both in Canada and abroad.

“I am extraordinarily honoured to know that I have been chosen for the 2023 Robert Johnston Visionary Artist Award,” says Glenn-Copeland. “We live in challenging times and it means a great deal to me in this, my 80th year, to know my work has served as an inspiration to others.”

“Beverly Glenn-Copeland represents everything that the Canadian Artists Network stands for,” says Scott Walker, Executive Director of the Canadian Artists Network. “He broke new ground with his Keyboard Fantasies; he is still going strong in his 80th year, with his beautiful new album, The Ones Ahead. And he has a strong belief in the future generations of artists. He is proof positive that Creativity Lives Forever.”

The Robert Johnston Visionary Artist Award was introduced in 2019 and is named in honour of the late Bob Johnston, one of the Canadian Artists Network’s original board members, whose long career included serving as Deputy Minister of Culture for the Province of Ontario and General Manager of the National Ballet of Canada. Previous winners include Patty Gail Peaker, John Leberg, Elizabeth Doxtater and Terrill Maguire.

Throughout a fifty-year recording career, Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s music has defied categorisation and genre, its only consistency being the extraordinary fusion of vision, technology, spirituality and place.

Beverly Glenn-Copeland (Glenn to his friends and acquaintances) was born into a musical family and studied the classical piano repertoire from ‘cradlehood,’ listening to his father playing the piano four to five hours a day. He moved from his hometown of Philadelphia to study classical music at McGill University in 1961 (focusing on the European song repertoire) before he suddenly felt called to write music that would weave influences from the myriad musical cultures he had come to love.

After many years of absence from the concert stage, Glenn-Copeland has resumed performing with his new band, Indigo Rising, in Canada and Europe. With great joy and appreciation Glenn-Copeland acknowledges his deep connection with the younger generations that are now so enthusiastically embracing his music!
