Choosing the Best Alto Saxophone

0

The saxophone is a very popular instrument, and when played well, is a beautiful one to play and listen to. Having made its way from jazz clubs into rock music, it’s now a staple of popular music, and is a relatively easy instrument to learn. The only problem is that there are many different manufacturers of saxophones around, and also different types.

In this brief article we’re talking about the Alto Saxophone; this is the one that is recommended for learners, and also one that many top players continue with. A versatile and easy to handle instrument, the Alto sax is a sensible size for youngsters. If your child – or you – have chosen the saxophone as their instrument of choice, then we’re here to help!

How to Choose an Alto Saxophone

It’s not easy to decide for beginner and intermediate students which saxophone to buy, especially if you are not familiar with the brands or the instrument. We recommend that you stay with known brands in the first instance. It is tempting to buy a very expensive instrument in order to have the best, but what happens if the learner decides it is not for them after all? You’re left with a saxophone you paid a lot of money for, that you can’t sell for its retail price.

There are many guides to choosing a saxophone that are more in-depth than this article, and we recommend you check them out. What we will say is that Yamaha makes a very good range of alto saxophones that are aimed at beginners and players who are not too experienced, and are priced in the right area too. They are very good indeed for the price – Yamaha is a highly regarded maker of musical instruments as well as being famous for motorbikes!

Your starting point should probably be the Yamaha YAS range, but there are other makers you should take a look at. Conn-Selmer is a long-standing maker of fine musical instruments and has saxophones that may be within your budget, and Jupiter is another name to look for when considering the options. One piece of advice we will give is that if you or your child are serious, look to the upper ends of your budget, and ask a saxophone teacher or musical instrument retailer for advice. A good saxophone will always have a better tone than one that has been put together cheaply, so it is also worth having a go on one, or listen to it being played.

Get the Best Deal

When you’re looking for an alto saxophone, you also need to make sure that you get a good deal with regards to accessories. You need a case – preferably a hard one for protecting your new instrument – and you also need a strap with a saxophone. These should come as standard as part of the package. You should also check  that you can get the parts needed to keep your saxophone in top working order easily – preferably at a local music shop – and it should come with a cleaning kit too.

There are great variations in the prices of saxophones – as you will see when you start looking at the market – so be very careful when you’re searching for the one for you. Don’t be tempted by the very cheap model that undercuts the others by a large amount, as it will be disappointing. Stick with the name brands, set yourself a sensible and affordable budget, take all the advice and read reviews, and you’ll soon be on the way to learning to play one of the most satisfying instruments of all.

Bif Naked Spares No Punch with New Single & Video “JIM”

0

The holiday’s saccharine sentiments be gone; multi-Gold and Platinum-selling Canadian rock star, author, songwriter, manager, producer, human and animal rights activist Bif Naked is packing a punch towards pain in her new single, “JIM” — available now!

“This is a song about loss, really,” she shares. “It’s the quintessential story of discovering a betrayal, and “JIM” is that villain.

“It’s totally about pain, and facing it head-on. It’s about that disillusionment we all feel when someone turns into an imposter.”

Accompanying the release is “JIM”s official video which reveals Canada’s ‘Princess of Everything’ in her rightful throne, reigning rock supreme and as strong as ever. The track lands ahead of her forthcoming album, CHAMPION — her eleventh studio release.

“I’m still fighting, still swinging as a legacy artist, an O.G. At this stage of the game- I am a CHAMPION” Bif says. “I have never allowed myself to be limited, and the direction of this new album was from experimenting and being fearless. I’m excited by it, and fiercely proud of these tracks.”

CHAMPION as a title for Bif couldn’t be more fitting for arguably one of the nation’s most recognized and beloved entertainment industry icons whose personal story provides endless inspiration.

As detailed in her highly intimate, Internationally best-selling memoir, I Bificus (Harper Collins International), the multi-disciplinary artist and businesswoman — and notably, a vegan who lives a straight-edge lifestyle — has arm-wrestled breast cancer, heart surgery, and kidney failure. Inspired by her myriad of life experiences and ardent interest in wellness, she has recently launched MonaLisa Healing, a premium, organic all-hemp CBD online boutique available in Canada, the United States, and soon to the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

And it’s not as if she’s not busy elsewhere; a contributor to such national publications as the Globe and Mail and Huffington Post — and as seen on shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno — Bif is fresh off a series of talks at Vancouver’s The Wellness Show.

This month she’s set to embark on an intimate acoustic series, the Songs & Stories Tour, and the year ahead has her kicking off a podcast series, New Riot Girls, and a book of poetry and illustrations. A book designed to help empower patients and their families while navigating cancer treatments and the Canadian healthcare system, is also in the works.

For the entirety of her prolific career — and interconnected in such a woven way only one of the country’s most unforgettable and inspiring women can accomplish — Bif has documented her journey in a deeply personal, highly relatable and inclusive way, covering topics that allow her truths to be a source of empowerment for fans.

“JIM” and CHAMPION are no different.

“I’m still fighting,” she says of the album, and career at large. “I’m still swinging as a legacy artist… An O.G.

“At this stage of the game, I am a CHAMPION.

“I’ve never allowed myself to be limited, and the direction of this new album was from experimenting and being fearless. I’m excited by it, and fiercely proud of these tracks.”

“JIM” is available now.

Canadian 5-Piece Durham County Poets Receive JUNO Award Nomination for Latest Album, Hand Me Down Blues

0

Canadian folk and roots outfit Durham County Poets have received their first JUNO Award nomination, up for Blues Album of the Year at the 2020 JUNO AWARDS this Sunday, March 15.

The nod comes for the band’s fourth and newest release, Hand Me Down Blues — their celebration of all things blues and the artists that inspired their journeys to the stage.

As far as introductions to a genre go, Durham County Poets frontman and lead vocalist Kevin Harvey’s is especially striking; while front row at a Muddy Waters show in Montreal in 1981, he placed his hand on the legendary artist’s shoe. “Muddy looked at me and winked, as if to say ‘welcome to the blues, son,” Harvey recalls. “I didn’t know I would have a life-altering spinal cord injury three months later that would place me in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. (But) that experience made blues come alive to me.”

Fast forward to 2012 and beyond, and Harvey — along with David Whyte, Neil Elsmore, Carl Rufh and Rob Couture, all hailing from Ormstown, Quebec and its surrounding Chateauguay Valley — have Durham County Poets and previous releases, Grimshaw Road (2017), Chikkaboodah Stew (2014) and Where The River Flows (2012) to show for it.

The five artists — all of whom are songwriters and musicians hailing from a multitude of genres, including gospel and rock — possess an unmistakable joie de vivre while performing together, offering audiences, including at the Rochester Jazz Festival, Ottawa Blues Festival, and Montreal’s Folk Festival, an infectious good-time vibe through song.

“The band and I, we have our own experiences and inspirations to create this dedicated ‘blues album’, paying homage to our favourite blues artists,” Harvey adds. “Muddy Waters was just one of many who handed the genre down to us, and now we want to continue in that tradition by putting our own stamp on it and “Hand” the blues to the next generation.”

Hand Me Down Blues  is available now.

Andy Milne’s First Album with his Unison Trio, ‘The reMission’, is out April 10 on Sunnyside

0

Consummate pianist Andy Milne releases first trio album, The reMission, with new group Unison, out April 10 on Sunnyside Records

Esteemed pianist, bandleader and educator Andy Milne is excited to announce the release of his new album, The reMISSION, out April 10 on Sunnyside Records with his new trio Unison.  Marking Milne’s first foray into piano trio performance, the album is a stunning shift in direction in the artist’s illustrious career.  In late 2017, a life-changing cancer diagnosis forced Milne into a period of reflection over his fruitful career, a reevaluation of his direction as an artist, and finally, remission.  Added to the mix was an unexpected offer (which he accepted), for a full-time professorship from The University of Michigan. After conquering his diagnosis, Milne seized the opportunity to tackle a musical venture that he has always found exciting, and at times daunting: the powerful intimacy of the piano trio format.  Juno award winner Milne brings a bold, imaginative sound to this pared down context, presenting fresh, original material written for this hallmark collaboration between himself, drummer Clarence Penn and bassist John Hébert. Andy will be touring this project throughout the United States and Canada upon release; see below for full details.

Milne’s focus on composing for larger ensembles is best represented by his stellar work with his long-standing group Dapp Theory.  Formed in 1998, Milne released five albums of inventive compositions for this outfit, the last of which, 2018’s The Seasons of Being, won ‘Group Jazz Album of the Year’ at the 2019 JUNO Awards.  After twenty years of creative output in that esteemed quintet, Milne’s decision to create the trio Unison has yielded bold compositions that seem to emanate from within the pianist’s core, performed by an artist with a heightened conviction and supported by a steadfast rhythm section made up of Penn and Hébert.

“In jazz,” Milne remarks, “the trio is perhaps one of the most heralded and revered configurations for pianists. Throughout most of jazz’s ongoing evolution, the piano trio has been the backbone of the rhythm section and thus represented and defined the textural palette and rhythmic heartbeat for many groups of all sizes. As a stand-alone entity, the piano trio has often been the backdrop wherein pianists establish their reputations and define their pianistic vision. For me, the decision to present who I have become as an artist in the trio setting involved a reckoning and a certain degree of artistic and technical evolution in order to both embody my past projects, and forge a new path forward.”

While Milne’s journey reflects a reversal of the jazz pianists’ time-honored practice of starting their careers with a trio and tackling larger configurations later, this decision has paid off by informing his trio sound with a structural and harmonic richness, and masterful interplay atypical to mainstream of the piano trio idiom.  Paying homage to a jazz luminary, the album begins with a spirited performance of McCoy Tyner’s “Passion Dance”, setting the tone for an album wrought with energy and exploration.  The trio finds a sweet spot on this simmering rendition with crisp snare pops from Penn, fluid bass lines from Hébert and cerebral lines from Milne.

Upon listening to “Resolution”, the first original composition presented on the album, one gets a feel for the breadth of the interplay among the three musicians.  Milne composed this atmospheric exploration on New Year’s Day as a pledge to create music that plays to the strengths of his personnel.  Fittingly, this piece was originally composed for solo piano, which liberates the rhythm section, allowing them to transform the piece with textural musings surrounding Milne’s melodic invention.

Compositions like “Winter Palace”, and “Drive by – The Fall” highlight Milne’s appreciation of the simple beauty of nature, an appreciation perhaps revitalized by confronting a life-changing diagnosis.  The ostinato driven “Winter Palace” is a masterwork of tension and resolution, encapsulating the feeling of a turbulent snowstorm.  “Drive by – The Fall” most closely aligns to with the music of the Dapp Theory rhythm section writing which Milne was so accustomed to prior to forming the trio.  The leader refers to this piece as the bridge between the two aesthetics. Fittingly and perhaps ironically, the track is sequenced squarely in the middle of the recording.

Bassist John Hébert sets up the groove in “Dancing on the Savannah” which also prominently features the sensitivity and reactiveness of drummer Clarence Penn.  Speaking to Penn’s excellence, Milne notes, “He and I have known each other since we both moved to NYC but had never performed together. Every time I heard him perform, I found myself fixated by how his sound, time and finesse elevated whatever band with whom he was performing.”  Rounded out with Hébert on bass, Milne notes that the trio’s collective conversation guides their path towards the intersection of their combined sensibilities — an intersection of “joy, risk and trust”.

More Information About the Artist:

For more than 25 years, Juno Award winning pianist/composer Andy Milne has demonstrated boundless versatility, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, poets and musicians spanning jazz, classical, pop, folk, and world music. With UNISON, enriched with creative insights from all his projects, Milne returns to his first love, exploring the intimacy of the piano trio. The synchronistic relationship Milne has enjoyed with bassist John Hébert since 2010 is matchlessly rounded out with drummer Clarence Penn, who represents complimentary threads within the fabric of Milne’s piano trio philosophy — the intersection of texture and groove.

A former student of Oscar Peterson, Milne has performed with a range of artists including Cassandra Wilson, Ralph Alessi, and Bruce Cockburn, and has composed, performed and produced scores for seven films by acclaimed actor/director William Shatner. A distinct and respected voice at the heart of New York’s creative jazz scene, Milne was at the center of the M-BASE Collective as a core member of saxophonist Steve Coleman’s bands during the 1990s. He is a Yamaha Artist and sought-after educator, serving as an assistant professor of music at The University of Michigan and the Assistant-Director at The School for Improvisational Music.

John Hébert, originally from New Orleans, has been a highly sought-after New York bassist since the mid-1990s. A former student of Rufus Reid, Hébert has collaborated extensively with pianists Fred Hersch and Andrew Hill, appearing on celebrated recordings from each pianist. He has also performed with Lee KonitzPaul BleyJohn AbercrombieKenny WheelerPaul MotianUri CaineBill StewartMary HalvorsonTomasz StankoDavid Liebman, and Toots Thielemans, among many others. An accomplished bandleader, Hébert’s 2015 Sunnyside release with his quartet Rambling Confessions — his quartet featuring Milne — received critical acclaim, including 4.5 stars from Downbeat. Over the past decade, he has been named multiple times as a “Rising Star Acoustic Bassist” in Downbeat’s Critics Poll and has received multiple Grammy nominations. Hebert is a full-time professor of bass at Western Michigan University.

Clarence Penn is one of the most in demand jazz drummers in the world. A composer, bandleader, and prolific producer, he performs regularly with Maria SchneiderDave Douglas and Uri Caine. Since 1991 when he arrived in New York City, Penn has placed his unique blend of mega-chops, keen intellect, and heady musicianship at the service of a staggering array of A-list artists including Ellis and Wynton MarsalisBetty CarterStanley ClarkeSteps AheadMakoto Ozone and Michael Brecker. His impressive discography includes several hundred studio albums, including Grammy-winning recordings from Randy Brecker and Maria Schneider, representing a 360-degree spectrum of jazz expression. He has toured extensively throughout the United States, the Americas, Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia. He’s composed music for films and commercials, and produced tracks for numerous singers in the pop and alternative arenas. Whether leading his own band or performing as a sideman, Penn brings unfailing versatility, professionalism and an ability to find creative ways to interpret a global array of styles and idioms.

Peach Pit will embark on a massive headline tour this spring in support of their sophomore album. The first North American leg kicks off on April 24 in Calgary, AB with stops in Chicago, New York, and DC before Peach Pit bring their show to Europe. The band will return to the US for the West Coast run of dates beginning June 16 in Phoenix, AZ.

Peach Pit have released their new single “Shampoo Bottles” along with the Lester Lyons-Hookham directed official video for the track. Produced by John Congleton and written by Peach Pit, “Shampoo Bottles” will be featured on the band’s forthcoming sophomore album due out this spring and follows the release of “Feelin’ Low,” which will also be on the LP.

In speaking about the new single, Peach Pit’s lead-singer Neil Smith says: “‘Shampoo Bottles’ is a song about the stuff my ex-girlfriend left at my apartment after we broke up (deodorant, shampoo, cell phone charger) and how even after I’d used up all the soap in the bottle and the deodorant in the stick, I still didn’t throw them out for a while. The video, directed by our longtime collaborator Lester Lyons-Hookham, has four protagonists each mourning the end of something. It shows how coping with a loss can make you do weird things.”

MTV Studios, a unit of MTV and ViacomCBS and Quibi announced today that Grammy award-winning superstar Chance the Rapper will take the reigns as host of “Punk’d,” the groundbreaking prank series that dares to put unsuspecting A-listers into hilarious and over-the-top situations. “Punk’d” will be reimagined for a new generation and will be available only on Quibi’s mobile video platform.

The MTV series that coined the cultural verb, “Punk’d,” started a phenomenon by going where no show had gone before. Now, Chance the Rapper, along with his signature ‘3’ baseball cap, is stepping into the director’s chair with new laughs, new hoaxes and new celebrity ‘marks’ in bite-sized episodes. This time around, no stars are safe, and the hidden cameras will be there to catch every second.

Celebrity ‘marks’ will be announced at a later date.

“Punk’d is one of MTV’s most iconic franchises,” said the Grammy award-winning artist. “I grew up watching this show and it’s surreal to be in the driver’s seat this time around on Quibi.”

Launching on April 6, 2020, Quibi is the first entertainment platform designed specifically for your phone. Quibi will feature original content from Hollywood’s biggest stars. Quibi – which is short for “quick bites” – is built for easy, on-the-go mobile viewing with new episodes of movie-quality shows delivered in 10 minutes or less.

Toronto’s SIGGI Releases Neon Dream of a Video for “Better Man” — Available Now!

0

Electro-funk songwriter SIGGI is out with a brand new neon dream of a video for his new single, “Better Man” — available now!

With the vibe of video game avatars come to life, “Better Man” and its video take a long walk— literally — in search of connection.

“It comes down to one overall, related message,” Siggi explains. “Something is missing between one another, and I try to define what it is.”

That quest is endeavoured upon throughout the entirety of Human Touch, Siggi’s sophomore release, set to land this July. “Human Touch is my first concept album,” he offers. “It’s centred on social aspects and individual strength… It’s a roller coaster of emotions based on human interaction and behaviour.

“Toronto is multicultural, exhilarating, and challenging,” he continues, relating it back to his new home city of YYZ. “It’s not about race, gender, or political ideologies… It’s about humanity.

“The sound and mood change in each track, but it still blends together.”

“He” in reference is also known on ID pieces in his wallet as Daniel Sigismondi; Siggi is the Italian-born genre-bending lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s display of creative craftsmanship at its finest.

The project gains extra juice from background vocalist Holly Paxton, keyboardist and background vocalist Scott Dion Brown, bassist Michael Kossov, drummer Garson Karrel, and percussionist Greg Noguera.

Originally from San Benedetto, Italy, Siggi found himself in a tough spot: drums and punk were his jam, through and through, and provided an outlet for the self-described sense of rage and rebellion he felt within the seemingly claustrophobic provincial culture he was surrounded by. After moving to Milan at age 18, his sound shifted to jazz, blues and soul. “Beauty is in the difference, and that’s how I started appreciating creating music,” he recalls. “Even though drums were originally my passion, I always felt like there was a part of myself I needed to discover.”

Sigismondi eventually caved to the curiosity, and he picked up a guitar. “Soon I was devoting my time to a solo career, composing songs, recording my own material, and writing lyrics.”

With 2017’s breakout single, “Devil on My Shoulder,” Siggi’s debut five-track EP My Way Around would land later that year. On it, Sigismondi incorporates Italian songwriting influences with modern funk, before polishing them into dynamic and easily danceable sounds.

“Now I’ve moved to Toronto with the goal to make people dance, to give the right positive message, and to connect — but in my own way,” he says. “I’m not saying everything has a purpose, but… Maybe.”
