Rival Sons Announce New Album “Feral Roots”

Rival Sons have announced the release of their highly-anticipated new album. Feral Roots arrives everywhere on January 25 via GRAMMY Award-winning producer Dave Cobb’s major label imprint Low Country Sound/Atlantic Records.

Produced by longtime collaborator Cobb at Nashville’s famed RCA Studio A and the equally legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Feral Roots marks Rival Sons’ Low Country Sound/Atlantic Records debut.

“Do Your Worst” – which is closing in on the Top 15 at Active Rock Radio – debuted last month via Rolling Stone, who hailed the single as “a relentless rocker with a gritty verse spearheaded by a sinister lead guitar riff and thumping drums. The track takes a deft turn when it hits the chorus, forgoing out-and-out guitar bombast for rousing gang vocals with singer Jay Buchanan leading the charge.”

Known far and wide as a powerhouse live act, Rival Sons will celebrate Feral Roots with a worldwide tour schedule, including a headline European run set for early 2019. North American dates will be announced in the weeks to come.

Ontario Science Centre offers chance to bid on dinner with one of Canada’s favourite astronauts

Going, going, gone! The RBC Innovators’ Ball, the Ontario Science Centre’s signature fundraising event, has extended its reach beyond the gala walls with an eAuction that offers exciting, experiential packages — from a tour of the Galapagos Islands to a private dinner with astronaut Chris Hadfield to platinum seats at a Toronto Maple Leafs game. This year’s eAuction provides science lovers who are unable to attend the sold-out event with an opportunity to support the Science Centre’s community access programs with the click of a button. Packages can be viewed at BidsfortheBall.ca. Bidding opens on November 1 at 9 a.m. EST and closes on November 15 at 9:30 p.m. EST, the evening of the 2018 RBC Innovators’ Ball.

“The support of our sponsors and donors at the RBC Innovators’ Ball, and throughout the year, is vital to ensure that a Science Centre experience is accessible to all members of the community, particularly youth from Ontario’s underserved neighbourhoods,” said Maurice Bitran, PhD, CEO and Chief Science Officer, Ontario Science Centre. “Early exposure to inspiring experiences can ignite a lifelong interest in science and technology, encourage the innovators of the future, and foster a more science-literate population.”

In the past 10 years, this event has raised more than $4.5 million to provide critical funding for the Ontario Science Centre’s community access programs, which serves 78,000 children and adults annually. These industry-leading community access programs include Adopt-a-Class, a vital program that provides students with the opportunity for learning and discovery, regardless of financial means.

“We’re proud to support the Ontario Science Centre in achieving their purpose of using technology and innovation to help shape a better future for tomorrow,” said Martin Wildberger, Executive Vice-President, Innovation & Technology, RBC. “The world is changing faster than ever before, and giving youth access to early science learning fosters critical thinking, collaboration and communication; skills that are essential to help young people and their communities thrive in the future.”

Now in its 11th year, the 500-person event explores how innovation is transforming our daily lives by celebrating Canadian visionaries, presenting fresh ideas and uncovering the journey from inception to invention. This year’s presenters are Ryan Janzen, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, TransPod; Harleen Kaur, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ground News; and Mina Mitry, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Kepler Communications.

Smash Mouth Releases New Song “Unity” Featuring DMC and Kool Keith

0

Sometimes, Social Media can bring together the best of the best in unusual ways at the perfect time. In this particular case, Smash Mouth and their guitarist Greg Camp connected with rapper Kool Keith via Twitter. This eventually led to an ongoing private messaging stream between them. They continued the conversation, coming to the conclusion that a collaboration on some new music with a purposeful message would be especially timely. With the foundation for this new recording established, Keith believed the inclusion of yet another artist whose voice would add additional credibility to the project would be an asset.

But, who to call? Keith had a brilliant idea and reached out to Darryl McDaniels. As a founding member of Run DMC, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels is considered one of the pioneers of hip-hop culture, a voice of enlightenment and an industry icon. Additionally, his well documented love of guitar music and his affection for the rock genre would be a natural fit. DMC was approached to add his passion to the cause. The line-up was set and the chemistry evident.

Greg Camp says, “All of us in Smash Mouth were raised on Run DMC. We were introduced to Kool Keith’s music by our keyboardist Michael Klooster. As a result, we all hit it off instantly and started throwing ideas around. Instrumental tracks were forwarded to DMC including a song that Smash Mouth bassist Paul Delisle wrote. Darryl ended up working on two of them. Camp wrote the chorus for Unity and Steve Harwell sings it with his trademark punch. Kool Keith dropped his unique free-styling skills over it. Eventually, a rough mix of Unity emerged and was sent around to the Smash Mouth guys and DMC.” Camp adds, “I received a phone call. It was Thanksgiving and I was driving on I-5 Freeway. The caller I.D. read DMC. ‘Uh…hello..?’ On the other end of the phonem Darryl said, ‘YO! THIS SH*T IS CRAZY.’ I’m sure he said something cooler than that but all I remember is pulling my car off to the side of the road and taking a deep breath thinking, DMC just called me on Thanksgiving!”

At a time when sensibility and truly inclusive Unity is so needed. On November 1st, this unapologetic message is loudly and clearly delivered via this track. Avant-garde filmmaker, Mike Davis, was brought in to craft an edgy, populist phantasm of a video that underscores this earnest, yet love-based message of brotherhood, courage and defiance. “Unity” follows partly in the footsteps of Smash Mouth’s “Walkin’ on the Sun,” a pop gem that subliminally functions as a serious anthemic battle cry against conformity and the status quo.

“Unity” will perform well and the group believes it plays to an even larger audience — just in time for the all important mid-term elections. “Many of us are insulted by what’s happening around us and as artists it is our duty to use this very fortunate platform to speak out. Music is the most powerful medium and the perfect vehicle through which to deliver our message,” concludes the project’s creators..

David Gray Announces New Album “Gold In A Brass Age” And World Tour in 2019

0

David Gray today confirms release details for a new album Gold In A Brass Age – his first album of new material in four years – alongside a seventeen-date tour of the UK for 2019. The album will be available on March 8 through IHT Records / AWAL Recordings, with first single ‘The Sapling’ out today. Produced by Ben DeVries, son of producer and soundtrack composer Marius, Gold In A Brass Age finds Gray in renewed creative form. The album arrives just ahead of a run of headline shows including London, England’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, March 17th. North American tour dates begin in May and include stops in Toronto and Vancouver. Stream ‘The Sapling’ here. Watch the lyric video for The Sapling on YouTube here.

Gold In A Brass Age is defined by an intuitive approach from Gray, exploring new electronic textures and sound palettes, along with new production techniques in the process. Using a cut and paste approach to the arrangement of songs, the album’s atmospheric and experimental undertones are evident throughout. The album’s title is drawn from Raymond Carver’s short story Blackbird Pie, and informed by the regenerative cut and thrust of Gray’s adopted home of London and a fascination with the natural world which has long since consumed his time outside of music. The album’s striking artwork – for which Gray sought out Peckham-based tattoo artist London Boy – depicts an Emperor moth with the City of London captured between its wingspan.

Speaking about the creation of Gold In A Brass Age, Gray says; “With this album, my default position was to do everything differently. I didn’t think ‘this would be a good hook or ‘these lyrics could work for a chorus’. I was keen to get away from narrative. Instead of writing melodies, I looked for phrases with a natural cadence, so that the rhythm began with the words. I reimagined where a song might spring from and what form it could take.”

Written in breaks between several month-long tour stints – which included a US co-headline run of shows with Alison Krauss – Gold In A Brass Age sees Gray’s unmistakable vocal hushed in many places to an intimate falsetto, to compelling effect. Hypnotic lead single & album-opener ‘The Sapling’ bears out the nuanced approach in spades, with Gray’s rumination on the brevity of life tempered by layered vocals and a brass section including cor anglais and baritone sax. “Time ticking by is a theme that recurs throughout the record’ says Gray. “Fragility, renewal, a changing of perspective.”

Gold In A Brass Age will be David Gray’s eleventh album in a career that spans over 25 years, several Brit and Grammy nominations, and three No.1 UK albums, including for the breakout multi-platinum White Ladder. It is also a vital new collection of songs from an artist still revelling in his passion for song-craft, pushing himself into unfamiliar terrain, surprising himself as much as his fans along the way.
