SXWorks, a subsidiary of SoundExchange, today launched NOI LOOKUP, a new service to help music publishers and songwriters search the more-than 60 million address unknown Notice of Intention to Use (NOI) filings made with the U.S. Copyright Office.
NOI LOOKUP is available free of charge at sx-works.com and is the first tool designed to allow music publishers and songwriters to quickly and easily search address unknown filings for uses of their works.
“Music publishers and songwriters finally have a way to gain visibility into address unknown filings made by some service providers using their songs,” said Michael Huppe, Chairman of the Board of SXWorks. “Publishers and songwriters can search the NOI submissions via a simple web-based interface. The service makes a complex process much more transparent, supporting our goal of trying to improve how the music industry operates.”
An NOI is a notice sent by a proposed user of a musical work informing the copyright owner that it intends to distribute the musical work pursuant to the compulsory license set forth in Section 115 of the Copyright Act. The proposed user must send an NOI to the copyright owner before or within 30 days of making, and before distributing, any phonorecords of the work. If the music user sends the NOI to the copyright owner, it must account and pay statutory royalties to the copyright owner for all uses of the song.
If the proposed user can’t locate the copyright owner in the registration or other public records of the Copyright Office, it may file an address unknown NOI with the Copyright Office. If a service files an address unknown NOI with the Copyright Office, the service isn’t obligated to pay a royalty to the copyright owner of the song until after that copyright owner becomes identifiable in the public records of the Copyright Office, and the service is free to exploit the work under the statutory license.
Music services filed as many as 4.5 million address unknown NOIs with the Copyright Office in a single month in 2017 and filed an average of 2.5 million address unknown NOIs each month last year. Address unknown NOI filings are made available to the public by the Copyright Office in separate compressed files, which makes searching the records individually difficult. The SXWorks NOI LOOKUP tool indexes all the NOI address unknown filings and provides the information to publishers and songwriters in a comprehensive, searchable database.
NOI LOOKUP is available free of charge, and SXWorks will offer additional premium capabilities to the service in 2018.
GRAMMY-Award winning, multiplatinum-selling artists BEN HARPER and CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE will collaborate once again for their new album No Mercy in This Land, due out March 30, 2018. No Mercy in This Land is the first of new music from the pair since the 2013 release of their collaborative album Get Up!, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums Chart and won a GRAMMY Award in 2014 for “Best Blues Album.” A musical expression of the kinship between the two, the album recounts both Ben and Charlie’s personal stories and adds to the sonic history of American struggle and survival. No Mercy in This Land is available for preorder now at www.NoMercyInThisLand.com and will include an IG download of the album’s title track, which is also available to stream at the link here.
“Charlie Musselwhite is that very rare and hallowed place where blues past, present and future collide,” says Ben about his collaborator and friend. “He transforms notes into emotions that feel both hauntingly familiar and brand new, as if hearing them for the first time every time. He is a living legend whose harmonica playing should be beamed into outer space to search for other life forms.”
“On stage or in the studio – working with Ben Harper holds the same excitement I experienced working with Chicago blues legends back in the day,” says Charlie. “I think it is safe to say that Ben has reinvented the Blues in a great way: playing modern while preserving the feel. I am honored and privileged to be a participant in this project.”
Ben and Charlie will celebrate the album’s release on March 30th by kicking off an international tour that same evening in San Francisco, CA at the famed Fillmore before heading overseas for a string of European dates. The duo will make their return to States in May with two nights at Los Angeles’ Troubadour followed by a summer’s worth of shows across North America.

The music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix—Seattle’s original “West Coast Seattle Boy”—is set to be honoured with the debut of JOI Guitar’s Harmonic Hendrix Home Guitars series of custom hand-crafted, acoustic guitars.
Limited to a strict production run of only 10 instruments; each acoustic guitar in the Harmonic Hendrix Home Guitars series will be individually hand-crafted using an unparalleled combination of the rarest and highest quality tone-woods found in the world today along with an exclusive selection of high-grade reclaimed wood, salvaged from the first Seattle home purchased by the Hendrix family that Jimi Hendrix lived in as a child.
Harmonic Hendrix Home Finished Guitar from JOI Guitars on Vimeo.
Built just before 1920, at 2603 26th Avenue, in Seattle’s vibrant and fast growing Central District, this quaint single family residence became home to the young Hendrix family after Jimi’s father purchased the property in Spring 1953. Considered the first home purchased by the Hendrix family; the home played host to the young and inquisitive Jimi Hendrix during perhaps two of his most formative years when he first set his sight on how to play the guitar.
Now you can own a piece of this historical music legacy, with an exquisite, very limited edition, hand-crafted Harmonic Hendrix Home Guitars and hold a piece of Jimi Hendrix’s legacy in your own hands.
Reuben Forsland of JOI Guitars is pleased to work with Authentic Hendrix, LLC; the Seattle-based company owned and operated by the family of Jimi Hendrix to oversee the legendary guitarist legacy; to produce this exquisite, limited edition guitar collection.
The precursor instrument before this Harmonic Hendrix Home Guitarsseries was a commissioned project for renowned guitarist Slash (Guns N’ Roses/Velvet Revolver). “I wanted Slash to always have a little inspiration in his hands as he played,” explains Forsland. “So I incorporated select pieces of wood from the Hendrix family home and used it to border the neck on Slash’s guitar. He can now pick up this beautifully hand-crafted instrument featuring wood that has been surrounded by the sounds of Jimi Hendrix during his early formative years.”
Individually hand-crafted, no two guitars from the Harmonic Hendrix Home Guitarsseries will be the same. They are sure to be the most unique and beautifully sounding guitars Rueben Forsland and JOI Guitars have ever made.
JOI Guitars is pleased to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of every Harmonic Hendrix Home Guitars to the Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation; the non-profit entity managing the redevelopment of Jimi Hendrix Park in Seattle’s Central District; and near the original location of the Hendrix family home used in the production of these unique instruments.
Pre-sales for the Harmonic Hendrix Home Guitars are now being accepted by JOI Guitars, with the first two instruments to be revealed at the NAMM show this January 2018.

Led by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, Malala Fund champions every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education.
With Apple’s support, Malala Fund expects to double the number of grants awarded by its Gulmakai Network and extend funding programs to India and Latin America with the initial goal of extending secondary education opportunities to more than 100,000 girls.
Apple will help Malala Fund scale its organization by assisting with technology, curriculum and research into policy changes needed to help girls everywhere attend school and complete their education. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, will also join the Malala Fund leadership council.
