CATHERINE MACLELLAN announces new album COYOTE set for release October 11

0

JUNO award winner, Catherine MacLellan, returns after a four-year break from her own work with her most anticipated sixth album, COYOTE. This self-produced record is a travelogue through heartbreak, loss and the joy of life. The first two singles Out Of Time and Waiting On My Love are available now, with the full album set to be released October 11, 2019.

The past four years have been a busy and important time for Catherine, she set aside her own songwriting to celebrate the life and legacy of her late legendary father, Gene MacLellan. During this time, she recorded and released the album If It’s Alright With You: The Songs of Gene MacLellan, produced a stage show and an award winning documentary, The Song and the Sorrow – all in tribute to him. Gene MacLellan is recognized as one of Canada’s most celebrated songwriters with worldwide hits including, Snowbird made famous by Anne Murray, and Put Your Hand in the Hand by Ocean.

“It’s been an important time for me,” says Catherine, “bringing my father’s life story and music back into the world. I’ve learned a lot about myself and who he was. I’m ready, though, to get back to my own path and to bring these songs into the world. They’ve been waiting for me.”

COYOTE contains 14 songs that are reflective, heartbreaking and hopeful. They were all recorded and produced at Catherine’s home studio in PEI.

“We can all find ourselves stuck in a relationship, a career or something that no longer serves us and holds us back instead. It can be very difficult to make a break, but the older I get the more I feel the urgency that there is no time to waste. Out of Time is very much about pulling up stakes and starting over on my own terms.”

Waiting On My Love is about being in the moment and recognizing what you have in front of you. Love is never certain and is constantly evolving, but you can be aware of where you are right now and feel grateful for things as they are.”

Her last album of original material, The Raven’s Sun, won a JUNO for Roots Recording of the Year in 2015. Since then she’s been building a catalogue of songs just waiting to come to light. The songs are a result of big changes in her life and perspective. And while The Raven’s Sun was an intimate look into her musical work with long-time collaborator Chris Gauthier, COYOTE builds on that and adds the sounds of a fuller band. As well, it adds some more traditional East Coast instrumentation of accordions, fiddles and bouzouki.

As with many songwriters, Catherine feels most at home on the stage. So far this year, she has performed at Folk Alliance International, completed a successful spring tour of the Netherlands and graced the stage of the East Coast Music Awards Gala. This summer, the third in a row, Catherine is partnering with Charlottetown’s PEI Brewing Company for a summer series of concerts. This year songwriting friends Gordie MacKeeman and Meaghan Blanchard are joining her for the show Heaven To Me – Songs & Stories of Prince Edward Island. Fans will also find Catherine playing select dates and festivals in Canada and the US this summer and fall, with Australia rumoured for later this year.

Bad Religion Announce World Tour For New “Age Of Reason” Album

0

Acclaimed Los Angeles punk rock band Bad Religion have released a new album entitled Age of Unreason. Since the group’s formative years innovating their iconic fast and melodic sound, the band has steadfastly advocated for humanism, reason, and individualism. Today, as these values are in decline, and nationalism and bigotry are on the rise, Bad Religion’s message has never been more essential. Age of Unreason delivers a powerful and inspired rejoinder – a political and deeply personal treatise on all they believe in.

Bad Religion first came together in the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles. As intellectually minded young punks, they injected their primal sound with melodic hooks and soaring multi-part choruses as well as a philosophically critical world view. Instead of addressing customary topics of teen alienation and a generalized oppression – they wrote about evolution, religion, the natural world, science, world history and the enlightenment. Founding members Greg Graffin, Brett Gurewitz and Jay Bentley were eventually joined by guitarist Brian Baker of hardcore pioneers Minor Threat, and most recently by guitarist Mike Dimkich and drummer Jamie Miller.

Age of Unreason is Bad Religion’s 17th studio album and was co-produced by Carlos de la Garza. Since the band’s formative days in the burgeoning punk underground, they have amassed a worldwide following and penned numerous hit singles including “21st Century (Digital Boy.)” But now, at a point when many artists might be content to release something merely serviceable, Bad Religion has delivered a timely work of immense power. Age of Unreason is one of their very best. Society’s step backwards has propelled the legendary band decidedly forward.

Age of Unreason is an album that reveals as much about the band as their targets. Amidst the justifiable outrage, there is underlying introspection and a reaffirming of beliefs. For Gurewitz. “Lose Your Head” is an intensely personal song about surviving volatile times by focusing attention inward. It marries his passion for science with a lifetime of contemplative practice. “I ain’t superstitious but hey, do you know a good exorcist? / despite darker tendencies I’ve always had a strong bias to exist / and while recent developments seem like bad news for humanity / self-pity is always a case of mistaken identity / don’t lose your head before you lose your head” According to Gurewitz the song “grapples with today’s deeply troubling political events” in the context of two of his main interests: cognitive science and Buddhist philosophy. “Particularly the Buddhist concepts of “no self” and “mindfulness of death” which in practice can heighten one’s compassion for others and an appreciation of life.”

Age of Unreason is both a dire warning and testament to resilience. The overall message being – seek truth about the world and oneself. As Graffin, who holds a PhD in the history of science, says, “When I saw all these headlines about how terrible our world had become, I started doing a lot of reading. I read about the French revolution, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and I started to recognize that this is a pattern of history and something we should never venture into, there are ample warnings against it. Every school child should know this but it’s hard to get people to read about these things. Maybe this album can help. Because right now, with social media, we are just playing a version of kill the guy with the ball.”

Brian Wilson and Zombies Announce ‘Something Great From ’68’ Tour

0

Music legend and Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson and iconic British pop pioneers The Zombies announced today a North American tour celebrating the music from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s called ‘Something Great from 68’and beyond.

The tour will kick off August 31st at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas and will visit 15 cities with more to be added celebrating an evening of historic music, collaboration and harmonies to fans. VIP ticket packages are also available. Fans should visit BrianWilson.com/tour or TheZombiesMusic.com/live for ticket links and more information.

Former Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin will again join Wilson and his band to create some of the most cherished music of that time. The newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of famers The Zombies will open the shows with all original founding members (minus guitarist Paul Atkinson, who passed away in 2004) performing on stage alongside the newer members of the band.

With the theme leaning toward the music of 1968 and beyond, Wilson and his long-time band will be performing selections from his two of his favourite albums – “Friends” and “Surf’s Up” – as well as rare gems along with the biggest hits that he created with the Beach Boys.

“‘Pet Sounds’ is by far my very best album, though my favorite is ‘Friends’,” stated Brian.

Additionally, The Zombies will perform their seminal album “Odessey & Oracle” in its entirety – a record that features classics like “Time of the Season” – and other selections from their 50+ year career, which began with the 1964 smash “She’s Not There”, and continues with their latest Billboard-charting album “Still Got That Hunger”.

“It’s been quite a year and I’m ready to go out and tour some music that makes everyone have a feel good vibe,” says Wilson. “The Friends album has always been one of my favourites, and I love the music from that time in history. I’m psyched to go out with The Zombies who have some of the best harmonies ever.”

“For at least the last five years, we’ve expressed the thought to our management that a tour with Brian Wilson would feel to us pretty much like the perfect pairing. Now it’s something we’re actually able to look forward to, and with a great deal of excitement – particularly as, along with a whole set featuring our fantastic current band, we’ll be performing “Odessey & Oracle” in its entirety, with all remaining originals plus expanded forces, so that every note from the original album will be reproduced! Roll on autumn – we can’t wait!” – Rod Argent

Brian Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes. Wilson’s innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits including “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” and the No. 1 smash “Good Vibrations” established The Beach Boys as America’s preeminent band of the 1960s.

Wilson has also achieved great success as a solo artist with 11 of his own albums released to-date, including his acclaimed 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the ‘60s, Brian Wilson Presents… SMiLE. The album earned Wilson his first GRAMMY® for a recording, which was followed by his second GRAMMY® win for producing The Beach Boys’ acclaimed 2011 release, The SMiLE Sessions.

Wilson is also a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, a multiple-GRAMMY® award winner, and a U.K. Music Hall of Fame inductee. As a member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

Iconic British psychedelic pop legends The Zombies are celebrating their long-awaited induction into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. After receiving their 4th nomination in 5 years, the support for The Zombies’ induction among the public and their peers was undeniable. On March 29, 2019 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, The Zombies joined Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, The Cure, Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, and Roxy Music as the 2019 Class of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Fittingly, the Induction Ceremony took place exactly 50 years to-the-day after The Zombies’ classic “Time of the Season” first hit #1 on the charts in America.

Never content to only look back, The Zombies are also touring in support of their latest Billboard -charting album, Still Got That Hunger, led by founding and current members, vocalist Colin Blunstone and keyboardist Rod Argent, alongside Steve Rodford on drums, and renowned session guitarist Tom Toomey. New member, Søren Koch, joined the band following the untimely passing of The Zombies’ beloved bassist Jim Rodford (formerly of ARGENT and The Kinks) in early 2018.

The band’s live performances, described by Rolling Stone as “absolutely triumphant,” take fans on a journey through time, from their early hits…their 1968 masterpiece Odessey & Oracle …post-Zombies solo favorites…right to today with Still Got That Hunger.

Cage the Elephant reject the responsibility of keeping rock and roll alive

0

Author: Jorge Costa

‘Social Cues’ is the newly released album of the Kentucky band Cage the Elephant. Launched on the 19th of April, the collection is available on Spotify already, and it counts with a special participation of Beck, featured on the song Night Running. The track has already its own videoclip, published on Youtube last week , where Matt Shultz and the gang get into a retro themed trip with the iconic Los Angeles musician.

Cage the Elephant have been hitting the rock charts pretty hard during the last decade, but this album confirms a tendency to move away from that label. Since 2008, they have achieved first place in the Billboard Alternative Songs for eight times, same number of times of U2 and just behind Red-Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Green Day and Foo Fighters.

However, the leadman Matt Shultz, on an interview to Uproxx, one week before the album release, rejected the duties of keeping the rock spirit alive. Asked whether they would keep their traditions of classic rock or move away, just like Arctic Monkeys did on their last album Tranquility Hotel and Casino, Matt already hinted on the possibilities of going into a path of their own.

“We think about things much more based in each song and much more on a level of character”, he said. “But we try to pull away from anything that is persona-based, and I mean rooted in rock stardom or rock and roll or hip-hop or any of those words you might associate with a genre”. He admitted the band is more focused “on the specifics, like the communitive properties of songwriting”.

According to Shultz, the band is not keen on being attached with the “rock and roll” label and they are eager to experiment and do their own thing, based also on the opportunities that technology offers to musicians.

The voice of the ‘Elephants’ believes that people “forget the versatility of several instrumentalists composing together”. “You don’t have to be tied down to those confines. I’m just really excited with all the new software that’s emerging, all the new technology and instruments, and the ideas of approach”.

Further in the interview, Matt assumed one of his influences is the iconic legacy of David Bowie. “It was so incredible that he was entrenched in the avant-garde mediums and styles but was very aware of what was happening in contemporary culture”, he confesses.

Nonetheless, after four years, the Elephants are loose again and, although, the composition happened around the same time of Matt Shultz’s divorce from model Juliette Bechs, don’t expect a melancholic compilation reminiscing on the past. ‘Social Cues’ has somewhat of a sci-fi influence, with part being inspired by the film collection of John Carpenter, specially focusing on Halloween and its villain Mike Myers.

Still, the album does have some pieces that reflect Matt’s state of mind after the divorce, like in the song ‘Goodbye’, a ballad that the artist wrote for his wife, after their seven-year marriage came to an end. He recognized that “there was a fair amount of self-medication and intense isolation”, but he is happy to be able to get back on the right tracks.

The new collection has been getting mixed reviews from the critics, with Independent and Rolling Stone saying this is the best work of the band so far, while the website The Line of Best Fit says the album is a tasteless experience and an easily forgotten album. So far though, it holds a 75% rating on Metacritic.

This is the fifth studio album of the band and the successor of ‘Tell me I’m pretty’, from 2015, who brought successes such as “Cold Cold Cold” and “Trouble”. Other songs that became highly popular were “Cigarrete Daydreams” and “Come a Little Closer”, from “Melophobia” (2013), along with “Ain’t no rest for the wicked” and “Back against the wall”, included in their self-titled first album (2008).

Besides the vocalist Matt Shultz, the band is composed with his older brother Brad (guitar and keyboards), Jared Champion (drums), Daniel Tichenor (bass and backing vocals), Matthan Minster (piano and keyboards) and Nick Bockrath (guitar). Until 2013 Lincoln Parish was also a guitarist for the band, when he left to become a producer on his own.

Tail Winds Music Festival To Feature Rock Greats Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Black Stone Cherry, Geoff Tate’s Operation: Mindcrime, King’s X, & Sass Jordan

0

If you are a rock fan and live nearby Wappingers Falls, New York, then Saturday, June 29th is a date you will want to leave open – it is the day that the 2019 edition of the Tail Winds Music Fest will take place at Hudson Valley Regional Airport. The all-day event will feature headliner Chris Robinson Brotherhood, with additional sets by the likes of Black Stone Cherry, Geoff Tate’s Operation: Mindcrime, King’s X, and Sass Jordan.

General admission tickets are priced at $65, and a VIP experience is also available for $165 (tickets for kids twelve years of age and under will be $25) – very affordable prices indeed for such renowned rock acts. Tickets are available for purchase via tailwindsmusicfest.com.

And the artists are very much looking forward to rocking that day, as recently told to Chris Alo from More Sugar Music Magazine…

CHRIS ROBERTSON (BLACK STONE CHERRY)
Man, two bands I have always wanted to see my whole life was Kings X and The Black Crowes. To be on the bill and sandwiched between Kings X and The Chris Robinson Brotherhood is just amazing. Kings X, they are one of the greatest groove rock and roll bands of all time, in my opinion. They have just a massive sound, what they get out of three people is just amazing. I am a huge fan of Chris Robinson and just everything that he has done. It’s awesome and overwhelming to be on the bill with such amazing artists. We are just excited to be coming up to play this festival. We are excited about playing with some artists that we have never got the chance to play with before. We hope everyone at the festival accepts us and has a great time.

SASS JORDAN
Some of my old buddies in Geoff Tate’s Operation Mindcrime are playing the Tailwinds Music Festival. I haven’t seen them since I toured with them in 2014. I’ve met Chris Robinson before and I know Doug from Kings X, but I haven’t seen him in about a thousand years. I’m really looking forward to this show, I think it’s an awesome cause and I think it will be just a great show. I do hope that a lot of people come out to the show and that everyone can hang out and that we have a fantastic party. That’s what it’s all about, we are there to celebrate life. I’m assuming I will be on first because I’m the least famous of the lot, I think. So, I will be on early and then I’m going to watch the rest of the show, so then I can have a few drinks with everyone.

GEOFF TATE
I’m definitely looking forward to the show, I haven’t seen Sass Jordan since she toured with us and sang on “Suite Sister Mary”. I know King’s X for sure and I haven’t done a show with Chris Robinson in a long time. Queensryche did a big Monsters of Rock show in Europe with AC/DC and Metallica, Black Crowes was the opening band. I haven’t seen him since then.

JERRY GASKILL (KING’S X)
Oh yeah, I am looking forward to it. I always look forward to doing festivals and playing new things like that. It will be our first weekend after we record our new album. Really? Wow, I really would have never guessed that [concerning Chris Robertson’s admiration of King’s X], I like those guys too. I’m always honored by that sort of thing. It’s a beautiful thing to think that people that I look up to could turn around and look up to me as well. It’s a pretty great thing to be a part of. I don’t think we have ever done a show with any of these other artists. Sass Jordan has covered one of our songs. There’s a video somewhere of her playing “Summerland”. I have done a few cruises with Geoff Tate, just him, not the whole band. That’s always fun.

Hosted by CM-MC Festivals, Inc., the Tail Winds Music Fest is presented by iHeartMedia and Z93FM at the Hudson Valley Regional Airport located at 263 New Hackensack Road in Wappingers Falls, New York. The impressive 40’ main stage sits alongside the runway, and will feature additional performances by Big Guns, The PlayBack and Jason Gisser Band, with gates opening at 11 am.

There will also be a variety of food trucks, craft beer breweries (as well as other beverage vendors), sponsor displays, tent alley, helicopter rides, mobile lockers, vendors and activities for all attendees to take part throughout the day such as cornhole. An exciting addition like no other is the Exclusive VIP Experience, which includes a one-of-a-kind hospitality lounge, world renowned all you can eat buffet and a VIP private viewing area.

The 5,000+ music fans will have an amazing experience all while raising money for a very important cause!
