Diamond D And The Psychotic Neurotics’ Landmark Album ‘Stunts, Blunts And Hip-Hop’ Gets Reissued Today

0

On July 20, 2018, UMe will reissue the out-of-print, 2LP vinyl set of Diamond D And The Psychotic Neurotics’ landmark album Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop.

Twenty-six years ago MC/producer Diamond D from New York’s mighty D.I.T.C. (Diggin’ In The Crates) collective debuted with a stunning classic that entailed elements of what brought him and his crew notoriety—grimy boom-bap anchored by effusive yet obscure samples. Diamond emerged in the late ’80s as a member of Ultimate Force, a short-lived troupe whose debut album was shelved and didn’t see the light of day until over a decade afterwards. Diamond’s encyclopedic knowledge of records, after years of contributions and studious vision, came to the forefront in 1992 with his first official solo venture, Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop.

Despite his acumen and talent as a beatmaker, Diamond D had other production notables pepper his album with mastery and know-how. While Diamond helmed the majority of the beats, longtime visionaries like The 45 King, Jazzy Jay, Large Professor, and D.I.T.C. teammate Showbiz all make stellar appearances on the project. Despite its gritty, sonorous East Coast aesthetic, the album still hit No. 47 on Billboard’s R&B and Hip-Hop chart. You also hear sped up samples and vocals, a sound that would also be forever influential in the decades to come by the likes of 9th Wonder or Kanye West, respectively.

The track “Best-Kept Secret” featured lyrical fury from Fat Joe and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. The follow-up single, “Sally Got A One-Track Mind” also did well, charting at No. 12 nationally. The release featured celebrated cameos from Tribe Called Quest frontman, Q-Tip, as well as Brand Nubian MC Sadat X. Crewmembers Lord Finesse and the late Big L also make their presence abundantly felt on choice cuts.

Diamond’s production was so ahead of its time, Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop sounds as fresh now as it did upon its release decades ago. And while Diamond’s production prowess and loop-centric sound was already known amongst fans of D.I.T.C., Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop proved that a producer driven album could hold its own.

In the years that came about, Diamond remained proactive and contributed to many albums and one-offs that would define his style. Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop is a jazzy foray bound with storytelling narratives, battle raps, and light-hearted lyrics. At 70-minutes, Diamond D’s organized structure keeps the release above water and remains to this day an underground, and often under-mentioned, rap masterwork.

Matt Andersen Releases Live Video of “Coal Mining Blues”

0

Today, New Brunswick’s multi-award winning soul/blues powerhouse Matt Andersen releases the pro-shot live performance video of “Coal Mining Blues.”

The song comes off Matt Andersen & The Mellotones’ Live At Olympic Hall, which was recorded on Nov 22, 2014 at Olympic Hall in Halifax, Nova Scotia in support of Andersen’s JUNO nominated record Weightless.

“I was fortunate enough to have The Mellotones on the road with me for a slew of shows,” Andersen told American Blues Scene. “Some of the best time’s I’ve had playing music. It was an absolute treat to share the stage with these guys, especially this night at Olympic Hall. I’m thrilled that we captured what was coming from those shows.”

From the first notes of “Weightless” to the slow-dying roar of the crowd as the last licks of “Devil’s Bride” squeal out, Matt Andersen and the Mellotones Live at Olympic Hall is a rollicking, sizzling night of Andersen’s thunderous voice and hot guitar playing mashed up with the ten-piece force of nature that is the Mellotones, all captured at a historic dance hall in downtown Halifax.

Andersen calls it “the most drastic thing I could do,” a far cry from his usual one guy, one guitar context. “I make an impact when I’m solo with the quiet parts more than the loud parts. With a band it’s the opposite.” And if you’re going to have a band, it should be the Mellotones. Long a staple of Halifax’s live music scene, the band features a smoking horn section along with keys, drums, and more. “I felt like a rock star,” Andersen says.

Andersen’s also announced a number of solo US dates including stops at Los Angeles’ Hotel Cafe, Seattle’s Tripple Door, and Chicago’s City Winery. Full list of shows below.

Willie Nelson Pays Homage to Frank Sinatra on New Studio Album, My Way, Out September 14

0

Willie Nelson will release My Way, his new studio album on Friday, September 14. Check out Willie’s take on the classic “Summer Wind” below:

My Way is Willie’s second new studio album this year, following the release of his critically-acclaimed Last Man Standing in April.

An album of standards and classics made famous by Frank Sinatra, My Way finds Willie (who’s written a few standards himself) swinging his way through some of the most beloved songs in the Great American Songbook. The album–which features lush string and horn arrangements–was produced by Buddy Cannon and Matt Rollings.

Two iconic avatars on the American pop culture landscape, Frank Sinatra and Willie Nelson express the range of romantic emotion–from the intoxicating thrill of falling in love to the crushing hangover of heartbreak–in songs that speak directly to the listener. Recorded in the spirit of Willie’s legendary 1978 Stardust album (one of the first contemporary artists to “cover” the Great American Songbook) and 2016’s Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin (a Best Traditional Vocal Album Grammy Award winner), My Way pays homage to one of his heroes.

Willie and Frank were close friends, musical colleagues and mutual admirers of each other’s work throughout Sinatra’s lifetime. In the 1980s, Sinatra opened for Willie at Golden Nugget in Las Vegas and the two of them appeared together in a public service announcement for NASA’s Space Foundation.

“I learned a lot about phrasing listening to Frank,” Willie said recently in an interview for AARP magazine (June/July 2018). “He didn’t worry about behind the beat or in front of the beat, or whatever—he could sing it either way, and that’s the feel you have to have.”

That’s the attitude Willie brings to My Way with abiding classics like “Summer Wind,” “It Was A Very Good Year,” “I’ll Be Around,” “Fly Me To The Moon,” “What Is This Thing Called Love” (a duet with 9 time Grammy winner Norah Jones) and the anthemic title track, Frank done Willie’s way, one master vocalist channeling another.

Eric B. & Rakim’s ‘The Complete Collection’ 8-LP + 2-CD Deluxe Box Set Arrives!

0

In the decades since they exploded on the scene in the mid-1980s, Eric B. & Rakim have been universally recognized as one of hip-hop’s greatest creative units. Eric B.’s distinctive soundscapes, and cuts, and Rakim’s philosophically deep and lyrically complex raps remain unequaled, and the duo’s classic recordings remain a benchmark of the genre.

Although the duo’s albums have remained immensely influential, all have been out of print on vinyl in the U.S. for many years, making the UMe release The Complete Collection 1987-1992 an especially timely package. Not only a monument to Eric B. & Rakim’s larger-than-life catalog, this ten-piece vinyl / CD set is the first U.S. career-encompassing box set for any hip-hop artist.

The Complete Collection 1987-1992 incorporates 2-LP vinyl editions of each of Eric B. & Rakim’s four original albums — 1987’s Paid In Full, 1988’s Follow the Leader, 1990’s Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em and 1992’s Don’t Sweat the Technique — plus two bonus CDs of classic remixes, none of which have ever appeared on an album, and only a handful of which have previously been available digitally. All four LPs and both CDs are housed in a ridged slipcase that also boasts a 36-page book (with 29 vintage photos spanning the group’s career together, as well as liner notes from writers Tom Terrell and Brian Coleman).

The bonus CDs include an impressive 26 vintage remixes, including such influential classics as Coldcut’s “Seven Minutes of Madness” mix for “Paid In Full”; the “Six Minutes of Soul” reworking of “I Know You Got Soul” (by Double Trouble aka Norman “Fatboy Slim” and Danny D; Marley Marl and M.C. Shan’s original 1986 mix of “My Melody”; and “Friends,” Eric B & Rakim’s 1989 Top Ten collaboration with Jody Watley.

Hailing from Queens, New York and Wyandanch, Long Island, respectively, forward-thinking DJ and producer Eric B (born Eric Barrier) and revered lyricist Rakim (born William Michael Griffin Jr.) are, according to AllMusic, “almost universally recognized as the premier DJ/MC team in all of hip-hop.” After debuting with the independently released “Eric B Is President” single in 1986, they would go on to establish themselves as the hardest, most musically complex and most lyrically challenging rap act in the world. Rakim’s rhymes boasted plain-spoken but complex imagery and thought, ambitious internal rhymes, and a smooth, deliberate and unmistakable flow, while Eric’s innovative sonic experimentation was highlighted by his early manipulation of samples, including his pioneering mining of James Brown’s catalogue.

The Complete Collection 1987-1992 is packed to the ceiling with hip-hop classics. The landmark debut Paid In Full, which many fans consider to be the greatest album in hip-hop history, includes the beloved classics “I Know You Got Soul” and “Eric B Is President,” as well as the title track, which inspired no less than 30 remixes. The equally fierce follow-up Follow the Leader boasts such favorites as “Microphone Fiend” and the title track, and expanded the debut album’s minimalistic sound into broader, darker sonic territory. Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em found the pair maintaining their stature on such tracks as “Step Back” and “In the Ghetto.” And Don’t Sweat the Technique brought the twosome’s sound to a plateau with songs like “Pass the Hand Grenade” and “Casualties of War.”

More than three decades after they hit on wax, Eric B. & Rakim have recently started touring together again, and remain one of hip-hop’s seminal acts. The Complete Collection 1987-1992 presents their brilliant body of work the way it was meant to be heard!

David Bowie’s Massive 15-LP or 11-CD ‘Loving the Alien’ Box Set Covers 1983-1988

0

Parlophone Records are proud to announce DAVID BOWIE ‘LOVING THE ALIEN (1983 – 1988)’ the fourth in a series of box sets spanning his career from 1969.

The follow-up to the award winning and critically acclaimed DAVID BOWIE ‘FIVE YEARS (1969 – 1973)’, DAVID BOWIE ‘WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974 – 1976)’ and DAVID BOWIE ‘A NEW CAREER IN A NEW TOWN (1977 – 1982)’ will be released on 12th October.

DAVID BOWIE ‘LOVING THE ALIEN (1983 – 1988)’ will contain a brand new production of the 1987 album ‘NEVER LET ME DOWN’ by Bowie producer/engineer Mario McNulty with new instrumentation by Bowie collaborators Reeves Gabrels (guitar), David Torn (guitar), Sterling Campbell (drums), Tim Lefebvre (bass) as well as a string quartet with arrangements by Nico Muhly and a guest cameo by Laurie Anderson on ‘Shining Star (Makin’ My Love)’.

The eleven CD box, fifteen-piece vinyl set and standard digital download box set is named after the opening track from the ‘Tonight’ album and includes newly remastered versions of David’s most commercially successful period ‘LET’S DANCE’, ‘TONIGHT’, ‘NEVER LET ME DOWN (ORIGINAL and 2018 VERSIONS)’, the live album ‘GLASS SPIDER (Live Montreal ’87)’, the previously unreleased ‘SERIOUS MOONLIGHT’ live album, a collection of original remixes entitled ‘DANCE’ and the non-album/alternate version/b-sides and soundtrack music compilation RE:CALL 4.

Exclusive to each of the box sets is ‘NEVER LET ME DOWN (2018)’, a new production of the 1987 album. The seeds of this reimagining of the album were first sown in 2008 when David asked Mario McNulty to remix the track ‘Time Will Crawl’ and record new drums by longtime Bowie drummer, Sterling Campbell, along with strings. The track was issued on the iSelect compilation to much acclaim, and in the notes, for that record, David remarked ‘Oh, to redo the rest of that album’.

Fast-forward to early 2018 McNulty entered Electric Lady Studios in New York with Sterling, Tim Lefebvre on bass, who was in the ★ (“Blackstar”) band and Reeves Gabrels and David Torn on guitars. All of the musicians had a history with David, so were a perfect fit for what now sound like brand new songs. Nico Muhly, whom Mario first met when they were both interns working for Philip Glass in 2001, has handled the string arrangements.

The re-workings have revealed ‘Never Let Me Down’ as a very strong collection of songs with a dark thematic thread running through them. Fans listening to ‘NEVER LET ME DOWN (2018)’ would be forgiven for thinking that they were listening to a brand new ‘lost’ Bowie record.

This 2018 version of the album will also feature newly ‘remixed’ artwork reflecting the album’s subject matter and features unseen images from the original cover photographic session from the archive of Greg Gorman.

Also in each box is the never before released ‘SERIOUS MOONLIGHT’ live album recorded in Vancouver, in 1983. Originally mixed at the time by Bob Clearmountain, the double album captures Bowie on what at that time was his most successful tour. The artwork features shots taken by photographer Denis O’Regan.

Also included is the 2CD / 3LP GLASS SPIDER (LIVE MONTREAL ’87) album, making its debut on vinyl (which is exclusive to the LP box). The tour’s innovative set and marriage of music and theatre has been cited as a big inspiration to acts in the 2000’s. Speaking in 1991 about Glass Spider Bowie said, “It was the first time I’d had the opportunity to spend that kind of money and do shows like that! The first time since Diamond Dogs, anyway…I thought, right! Let’s really spend some money! I had all these thwarted dreams of what I’d tried to do with rock ‘n roll in the early ’70s”.

Exclusive to each box is ‘RE:CALL 4’ and ‘DANCE’. The former a new compilation featuring remastered contemporary single versions, non-album singles, album edits, b-sides and songs featured on soundtracks such as Labyrinth, Absolute Beginners and When The Wind Blows. ‘DANCE’ features 12 contemporaneous remixes some of which are appearing on CD and vinyl for the first time and is named after an unreleased Bowie remix album that was originally slated for release in November 1985.

The physical box set’s accompanying book, 128 pages in the CD box and 84 in the vinyl set, will feature rarely seen and previously unpublished photos by photographers including Denis O’Regan, Greg Gorman, Herb Ritts and many others as well as historical press reviews and technical notes about the albums from producers/engineers Nile Rodgers, Hugh Padgham, Mario McNulty and Justin Shirley-Smith.

The CD box set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums, and the CDs will be gold coloured rather than the usual silver. The vinyl box set has the same content as the CD set and is pressed on audiophile quality 180g vinyl. As well as ‘Never Let Me Down (2018)’, ‘Dance’ and ‘Re:Call 4’, both ‘Serious Moonlight (Live ’83)’ and ‘Glass Spider (Live Montreal ’87)’

“I’d like to bring out an old friend,” Billy Joel told the crowd. “We go back a long ways – we were both on the same record label, we both got dumped by the label. But we did it.”

Then The Boss showed up on the The Piano Man’s stage, and sung Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and Born to Run.

How 78s Were Made In The 1940s

Before 1925, all 78s were recorded by means of the artist singing or speaking into a horn, the power of their voice directly vibrating the recording stylus and thus cutting the wax of the master disc. The older 78 format continued to be mass produced alongside the newer formats into the 1950s, but had faded from the scene by 1955.

Filmed in 1939-40, this piece takes you behind the scenes at RCA Victor and shows you the manufacturing process that went into the early 78 RPM.

Richard Reed Parry Announces New Solo Album “Quiet River Of Dust Vol. 1” Out September 21

Richard Reed Parry is thrilled to announce that he has signed to Secret City Records in Canada and will be releasing two albums as a two volume series. This autumnal equinox – September 21 – Quiet River of Dust Vol. 1 will be released while the spring equinox of 2019 will be the release date of Volume 2. Courtesy of Pitchfork, watch the animated video (directed by Caleb Wood and Richard Reed Parry) for two new songs from Vol. 1 – “Sai No Kawara (River of Death)” and “On the Ground” – below. Concert dates supporting the new record will be announced shortly.

Best known as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist in the Grammy-winning rock band Arcade Fire, the Quiet River of Dust volumes are Parry’s first solo work outside of his innovative compositional work with the highly respected Deutsche Grammaphon label. But, Quiet River of Dust is a new direction: a dreamlike journey of immersive, gently psychedelic songs inspired by Japanese death poems and the folk music of the British Isles.

The genesis of these songs came ten years ago after Arcade Fire’s first tour of Japan in February 2008. Parry stayed on for weeks after the last show, heading to a monastery for some solace in what he described as “the biggest silence you’ve ever heard.” Quiet River of Dust has been slowly gestating ever since, in many ways a necessary respite from Parry’s other musical pursuits as creating this music grew into a meditative practice.

“The song ‘On the Ground’ was inspired by an encounter with ghost voices in a Japanese forest near a temple on the sacred mountain Koya-Sān,” Parry explained. “I told director Caleb Wood the story – of being alone in this magical environment of giant cedar trees and hearing a loud chorus of powerful harmony singing that sounded inexplicably identical to my late father’s folk band the Friends of Fiddler’s Green, who were the soundtrack to my entire childhood and upbringing.”

Despite these influences, Parry did not explicitly want to write in a traditional British Isles folk style. Nor did he want to create the kind of pop songs to which tens of thousands of people could sing along, as he does with Arcade Fire. But while that band’s landmark 2004 debut, Funeral, made a grandiose statement through big, bold gestures, Quiet River of Dust does the same, with vertical layers of sonic architecture, but with the inverse approach: small, soft and gentle, though just as grand. Parry wanted to create a tangible aural garden of rapturous colors that invite exploration and create an immersive experience.

“I’m lousy at sitting still and being nothing,” Parry says. “But being out in the natural world or being immersed in music is the meditation for me. That’s the heart of this record: the experience of transcending the place that you’re in, getting lost in the feeling of where you end and where the world begins, in a dreamlike world of music and thought.”
