When artists back in the late 1990s showed little interest in irony and parody, you could always count on Weird Al Yankovic to rule the day – and airwaves – with this fake ad for his upcoming MTV Unplugged special.

The Canadian music community lost one of its most treasured and prolific members today. Garry Lowe passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 7th, 2018 following a private two-year battle with cancer. He was 65.

Garry Lowe was long heralded and admired for not only his extensive musical talents, especially with Gordie Johnson and Big Sugar, but also for his infectious energies of love, humanity, humour, and kindness.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Garry moved to Canada in 1976 at the age of 22, and began playing bass with reggae legend Jackie Mittoo. He joined Big Sugar in 1994, touring and recording many of their most classic and notable records. One of his most recent and final appearances was with Big Sugar and Alex Lifeson of Rush.

“We lost our dear brother and sweet friend Garry this morning,” shares Gordie Johnson. “He was my greatest musical collaborator, our wisest elder. We were blessed to be on life’s journey together.

“We were blessed to know him and share his music. Please remember Garry Lowe in all your thoughts and prayers.

“Rally round the Lion.”

Two Guys In Brooklyn Fit 60-Piece Orchestra In Their Tiny Apartment For Performance

0

Roommates Evan Tyor and Luke McGinnis share a passion for music and a 500-square-foot Brooklyn apartment. Every month, they open the doors of their humble abode to professional musicians from around the area, cramming every bathroom, bed and kitchen counter with instruments, music stands and musicians. Their sound is bigger than their four walls, so making room for a 60-piece ensemble—including a full choir—means getting creative. Welcome to Apartment Sessions.

That Time The Sex Pistols Played A Top Security Prison

During The Sex Pistols’ first major tour of England in 1976, there was one stop that likely made the band feel excited, or dread. Or both. It was at The Chelmsford Top Security Prison on September 17, before Glen Matlock left the band. Their opening number was Anarchy In The UK, and at the end of the number there was a barrage of catcalls, boos and screaming. Or what the prisoners would call, Monday.

The Music Theory Behind Why The National Anthem Is So Hard To Sing

0

“The Star-Spangled Banner” has a wide range, difficult vowels and a bunch of unexpected notes. This is either the reason it’s not for the faint of heart to sing or the key to its genius, depending on who you ask.

The Rolling Stones Emerge From The Vault with ‘No Security San Jose ’99!’

0

The newest addition to The Rolling Stones’ acclaimed “From The Vault” series looks back on 1999’s No Security Tour with this release from San Jose, California. It will be available on DVD and SD Blu-ray (both accompanied by 2 CDs with the audio from the show) as well as on triple vinyl on July 13, 2018.

The Rolling Stones’ No Security tour ran from January to June 1999 through North America and Europe. It followed on from the colossal Bridges To Babylon tour and took its name from the “No Security” live album recorded on that 1997/98 tour. In reaction to the huge stadiums played on Bridges To Babylon the conscious decision was made to book smaller venues for the initial North American leg of the No Security tour.

This show was filmed at the San Jose Arena in front of an audience of a little over 30,000 (intimate by Rolling Stones standards!) at the end of the North American run. Previously unreleased, it captures the band in top form playing a set that spans from mid-sixties hit singles up to the then current Bridges To Babylon album.

The set list spans from the mid-sixties hit singles to the Bridges to Babylon album, including a bluesy, dramatic version of ‘Midnight Rambler’, a dark and swaggering ‘Out of Control’, and the rarely performed live, ‘Some Girls’ and ‘Saint of Me’. The show was an electrifying, anthem-packed, cross generational hot ticket, concluding yet another chapter from the band that wrote the book on rock ‘n’ roll.

Wiz Khalifa takes a lie detector test for Vanity Fair. Does he really spend $10K a month on weed? Who smokes more, Wiz Khalifa or Snoop Dogg? Does he like Biggie more than Tupac? Does he believe in free will? Rolling Papers 2 will be out on July 13th.
