AMC UK Original Production “Before We Was We: Madness by Madness” Premieres May 1

0

AMC UK announced today that it will premiere “Before We Was We: Madness by Madness”, a three-part original docuseries which chronicles the rise of one of the biggest and most loved bands in British culture, Madness on 1 May at 9pm, exclusively on BT TV. All three episodes of the show, which was adapted from the critically acclaimed band biography of the same name, will simultaneously be available on demand through BT Player.

Each 60-minute episode is an enthralling slice of music history, featuring original footage and interviews with band members past and present including Chris Foreman, Mike “Barso” Barson, Lee “Thommo” Thompson, Graham “Suggs” McPherson, Daniel “Woody” Woodgate, Mark “Bedders” Bedford, Carl “Chas Smash” Smyth, regaling stories from their 40-year career together as Madness. Set during a time of cultural and political upheaval, the docuseries offers a captivating insight into a post-war Britain, which has changed beyond recognition alongside the band’s inevitable rise to the top of the charts, pop fame and fortune against the backdrop of the ska, punk and new wave revolution.

The docuseries traces the humble beginnings of the band that would go on to set the record for the biggest audience ever for the BBC’s Live New Year’s Eve Broadcast – the most watched TV music event of 2018, and perform on top of Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. Throughout their career, Madness have had 10 UK top ten albums, 15 top ten singles and have won a multitude of awards including a prestigious Ivor Novello. And the story isn’t over yet.

Looking back at his career, Suggs said, “I don’t remember ever thinking about whether it was going to last. You see this polished Madness that’s been going for years and people would think, ‘course you knew.’ But I didn’t have a clue. I wasn’t taking it the slightest bit serious. That’s why I got thrown out of the band at the start, because I just thought it was a laugh and just something to do – hanging out with pretty cool geezers. The idea that I was ever going to make a career out of it was totally beyond my comprehension.”

Series Co-Directors and Co-Producers for AMC UK are Ben Timlett and Bill Jones of Bill & Ben Productions. Executive Producers are Kevin Dickie, Harold Gronenthal, EVP, Programming & Marketing, AMC Networks International, Katy Ellis and Garry Blackburn from Anglo Management. “Before We Was We: Madness by Madness” is AMC UK’s second original production after their 2019 feature-length documentary, An Accidental Studio, which charted the creation of the ground-breaking British film studio, George Harrison’s HandMade Films.

AMC is available in the UK exclusively on BT TV, channel number 332, and is also available in HD on channel number 381.

The Weeknd wins 2020’s IFPI Global Digital Single Award for Blinding Lights

0

IFPI, the organisation that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, has announced that Blinding Lights by The Weeknd is the winner of 2020’s IFPI Global Digital Single Award.

The IFPI Global Digital Single Award is presented to the world’s best-selling single of the year across all digital formats – including single track downloads, and streams on both paid subscription services and ad-supported platforms.

Blinding Lights was the second single from The Weeknd’s fourth studio album After Hours, which was released in March 2020. A critical and commercial triumph, Blinding Lights peaked at #1 in more than 30 countries across the globe, fuelled a viral TikTok dance challenge, and shattered records for the most weeks in both the top 10 and top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Overall, the track delivered 2.72 billion subscription stream equivalents globally.

The Weeknd has appeared in the top 10 of IFPI’s Global Artist Chart in four of the last five years, and landed at #4 in this year’s chart, his best performance to date.

Frances Moore, Chief Executive of IFPI, said: “Blinding Lights was undoubtedly one of the year’s biggest record breakers and most loved songs. It caught the attention of music lovers all over the world. We would like to congratulate The Weeknd on his success, and it is an honour to award him this title.”

Blinding Lights was joined in the top three by Tones and I’s Dance Monkey, which spent a second successive year in the top ten and improved its chart position versus last year, a feat only matched by Ed Sheeran’s Perfect in 2018. Roddy Ricch’s The Box, which spent 11 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts across the world as well as being the top streaming track of 2020 on Apple Music, took #3 in the chart. Roddy Ricch also featured on the #8 track, ROCKSTAR with fellow chart debutant DaBaby, making him the only artist to appear twice in the top 10.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Chinese superstar Xiao Zhan landed at #7, following the outstanding success of Made to Love in his home country, where it broke records for digital download sales. BTS landed their first appearance in the IFPI Global Digital Single chart with Dynamite. Last year’s #1, Billie Eilish’s bad guy, spent a second year in the top 10 landing at #9.

The IFPI Global Digital Single Award is the second award announced by IFPI for 2020, following the announcement that BTS were the winners of 2020’s IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award.

MusiCounts Announces Contemporary Indigenous Music Classroom Resource

0

MusiCounts, Canada’s leading music education charity, is proud to announce Kanata: Contemporary Indigenous Artists and Their Music, a learning resource that will support teachers in bringing Indigenous voices, perspectives and music into classrooms. This new resource is a product of collaboration between several Indigenous educators, advisors, and artists. It will empower any grade 7 to 12 music or social studies educator to explore and celebrate contemporary Indigenous music in the classroom in a way that is authentic, respectful, and culturally appropriate.

The teacher resource guide explores the music of Jeremy Dutcher, Silla and Rise, and the Snotty Nose Rez Kids. The three artists contributed videos in which students can learn about this music directly from the artists involved. With a blend of genres including rap, classical, and electronic dance music, this resource will act as a pathway through which students will understand that Indigenous music is an evolving and diverse practice spanning many genres and sounds.

“MusiCounts is committed to giving educators across Canada new tools and resources through the MusiCounts Learn program,” said Kristy Fletcher, MusiCounts’ Executive Director. “The Kanata Teacher Resource Guide aligns so closely with MusiCounts’ mandate to make music education possible for all kids in Canada. This new resource can be used by any school in Canada, whether learning is happening in-person or remotely, and regardless of whether the school has access to musical equipment.”

Kanata is the latest resource to be produced under MusiCounts Learn, MusiCounts’ newest program which supports music education in Canada through creating new, innovative teaching resources for educators. The Kanata resource is free to use for all educators across Canada and can be accessed here. Schools and students who use this resource will be invited to submit a capstone project by May 24, 2021 for a chance to receive one of ten $1,000 MusiCounts grants to support music education at their school.

“I hope this resource will be a conduit for schools and educators to work towards addressing and building positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action in education,” says Kanata author Sherryl Sewepagaham.

Additional information about the Kanata teachers resource guide and MusiCounts can be found here. This project was made possible in part by the Government of Canada.

Scott Helman Shares Endearing New Video For “Good Problems” (Remix)

0

Scott Helman has shared the official video for the new “Good Problems” (Remix) by GRAMMY-winning producer Miles Walker. To create the heartfelt video, Scott enlisted his girlfriend, Katya Cybulsky, and longtime collaborator Ben Knechtel – who also directed the “Wait No More” video, which just earned Scott his sixth JUNO Award nomination for “Music Video of the Year.” The original version of “Good Problems” was released last year on Scott’s acclaimed album Nonsuch Park (sa) and he is currently working on the highly-anticipated second installment.

Says Scott: “It was so cathartic to write about these traumas, and once the remix came together, it was even MORE cathartic to hear them in the context of a BOP. This video came together really quickly. Ben sent me some ideas and I instantly let him take the driver’s seat. I loved where his head was at – me and Kat just being in love, discovering this landscape of sheets. Ultimately the video relied on me and Kat just being as much in the moment as possible. I’m so glad I took a back seat for this video and just focused on our connection because that’s ultimately what the song is about, and what the video deserves.”

Scott Helman has quickly established himself as one of Canada’s leading singer-songwriters. Since the release of his breakthrough 2016 EP Augusta, the six-time JUNO Award nominee has dominated the Canadian music scene with 2017 debut full-length Hôtel de Ville and 2018 EP Hang Ups, earning two platinum and three gold certifications to date, plus collaborations with Alessia Cara and Hunter Hayes, as well as tours with the likes of Tegan and Sara, Shawn Mendes, Vance Joy, Walk Off The Earth and Dean Lewis. Scott was most recently selected as a panelist on CBC’s Canada Reads, following the release of his sophomore album Nonsuch Park (sa), which featured explosive lead single “Wait No More,” the #1 most added song at Canadian radio upon its release last year.

Joshua Bassett Releases Self-titled Debut EP and Music Video For New Single “Telling Myself”

0

After building feverish anticipation and emerging as one of 2021’s most exciting artists to watch, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor Joshua Bassett releases his anxiously awaited self-titled debut EP. To celebrate the release, he just shared the music video for new single “Telling Myself”.

In addition to releasing the EP this week, Joshua will make an appearance at the 2021 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards tomorrow, March 13th, where he is nominated for Favorite Male TV Star. Joshua will also perform a song from his EP on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 24th. Furthermore, Joshua will treat fans to his first ever virtual show, “A Night With Joshua Bassett: A One Night Only Virtual Concert Experience,” on April 16th at 9:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM PT. Performing his songs for the first time with a band, Joshua will showcase his multi-instrumentalist and songwriting prowess. Tickets are on sale now at joshuabassettmerch.com.

About the EP, Joshua said, “My debut EP is a rollercoaster of stories and emotions. It was written over the span of two years, so every song represents a different chapter of my life recently. It’s all about the messiness of relationships, the back and forth of falling into and falling out of love, and how those stories somehow come together into a cohesive chaos.

The EP opens on the dreamy piano of “Sorry” as twinkling keys give way to his show-stopping delivery. Bass-y piano shuffles underneath the chantable hook, “She said, ‘You’ll be sorry when you left me, cause I’m the best thing that you aren’t ever gonna get again’.” Elsewhere, delicate fingerpicking carries the tender ballad “Do It All Again.” It culminates on the gorgeous “Heaven Is You” where he ignites one last uplifting refrain.

Joshua paved the way for the EP with “Lie Lie Lie” and “Only A Matter of Time” which received wide acclaim and established him as a breakthrough star. Teen Vogue raved, “‘Lie Lie Lie’ has a 2000s boy band feel in the best way – fun, acoustic, guitar-driven pop,” Elite Daily dubbed it “a total #mood,” and Billboard praised his “pop-rock talent, and ability not to mince words in his music.” The New York Times touted it on “The Playlist,” and Pop Sugar captured the excitement best with the admission, “I can’t wait to hear what other pop hits he has in store for his upcoming EP.”

Taking a moment to give back in a big way, Joshua recently pledged 100% of the proceeds from his merch store to the charity of the buyer’s choosing. Fans who pick up merchandise may pick one of five charities for their money to go to, all of which focus on youth-led movements or organizations led by next generation leaders, including A Long Walk Home, Jack, Teen Line, The Sunrise Movement, and The Young Feminist. Joshua is also donating 100% of the proceeds of sales of his “Franklin” Build-A-Bear furry friend available at his online merch store to CASA of Los Angeles (CASA/LA). CASA mobilizes community volunteers to advocate for children and youth who have experienced abuse and neglect. You can learn more about CASA/LA at casala.org.

Joshua Bassett may sing, write, act, and play multiple instruments, but he humbly identifies himself as “just a kid from San Diego who loves music.” Long before starring in the Disney+ original series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, generating millions of streams, and garnering widespread acclaim, he grew up surrounded by music in the suburb of Oceanside, CA. Described by many as an “old soul,” he played drums in church, taught himself ukulele, guitar, and piano, and wrote his first song for his homecoming date at 15. In addition to being homeschooled alongside his five sisters, he was able to strengthen his voice as a singer and actor in local theater productions. After various television parts on Dirty John, Grey’s Anatomy and more, he landed the lead role of Ricky in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series which premiered in November 2019. Simultaneously, he feverishly wrote music. Inking a deal with Warner Records, he unveiled his solo debut “Common Sense” and follow-up “Anyone Else” in 2020, laying the foundation for his debut EP out now.

How Listening to Music Can Help You Learn a New Language

0

By Merissa Moore

Music is one of the most wonderful forms of art and artistic impressions known to humans. Unlike visual arts, music can only be perceived and appreciated in time, not just space. Also, playing and even listening to music stimulates many sections of the human brain. By just listening to the musical piece, we manage to perceive the texture of the sound, rhythm (which involves the motor function of the brain), and various creative patterns used by the composer. And if the music contains lyrics, it can also help us learn the language it’s written in.

Music and Our Brain

There have been lots of studies talking about the strong influence that music has on our brain. Long story short, music initiates some real fireworks in our brain. We catch the rhythm, tone, pitch, and even words and pronunciation as we listen to the music, let alone when we play it. In this case, our memory works too, activating our brain almost entirely and making it work at its full potential.

All the processes described above often highly stimulate us, largely increasing our learning capabilities for some time. That’s why listening to songs in another language is so useful as you learn this language. If it doesn’t help, you can always find here the best online translation services to take care of language problems in your life. In most cases, however, music and lyrics do help you learn new languages, and here are only a few quick facts as to how they do it.

  • By stimulating our brain. As it was said before, only by listening to music, we activate many parts of our brains responsible for physical movement, thinking, perception, and learning. The main trick here is in the interconnectedness of the brain neurons that become even more flexible and connected by the electric impulses that our brain creates when it enjoys music. Thus, our learning capabilities increase, and we can learn a new grammar rule or some words (or anything else, essentially) much faster.
  • By exposing us to pronunciation. In most cases, when singers perform songs, they don’t simulate any particular pronunciation and use their native one even in the studio. This is unlike the news announcers or voice artists that undergo special training that allows them to read the text using a pronunciation understood by many people. This is very hard to perform while singing, so you’ll often hear performers using a more natural way to pronounce the words.
  • By exposing us to informal language. The songs are very rarely written in a formal, academic, or otherwise professional style. And when they are, it’s usually made for a comedic effect. Lyricists typically write the way they feel, often using slang and colloquial language, sometimes even disregarding the grammar rules. This way, you’ll learn not only what’s written in textbooks and learning materials but also the way people speak.
  • By creating patterns. The lines of lyrics often rhyme using particular words. Simultaneously, they are sung in a certain rhythm, tempo, and with a certain feel. All of these opens a vast space for associating and memorizing the words in the lyrics faster.
  • By letting us have fun. Listening, playing, or singing along to the music is an enjoyable activity. And just as it’s delightful, it’s also extremely engaging. There are lots of games that you can play with music as you learn a new language. And just like in the point described above, this allows you to create connections between the activity and learned material, thus, increasing your learning capabilities by a mile.

Music to Your Ears

Learning can sometimes be challenging. But this can be easily solved by adding some fun to the process. And there’s barely anything else that’s as fun as music, and for a good reason. With its ability to immediately activate nearly all parts of our brains at once, music can become a universal and the most effective assistant for language teachers. And if you’re learning the language on your own, music can be even of greater use, allowing you to learn more at a much faster pace.

0

The highly anticipated JUNO Award nominations list signals the country’s best of the best, and this year is no different from the roster of Eric Alper Public Relations. Amongst our clients and extended family of talented Canadian nominees this year, here are those absolutely worth checking out:

Vocal Jazz Album of the Year: Sammy Jackson, With You
Sammy Jackson is an emerging Canadian singer-songwriter recognized for her distinct sound, fusing elements of Jazz, R&B and Pop. Growing up, she regularly found opportunities to perform and develop as a musician, which led her to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Performance specializing in Jazz Voice from the University of Toronto. During her education, she studied with accomplished vocalists including Alex Samaras, Christine Duncan and Sienna Dahlen.

As a rising presence in Toronto and Niagara, Sammy has performed at notable venues and events such as Jazz.FM91’s One-Stop Jazz Safari, The Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar, Luminato, and TIFF Bell Lightbox to name a few. In addition to performing and leading her own band, Sammy has shared the stage with renowned musicians such as Barbra Lica, Robi Botos, Rich Brown, and Larnell Lewis.

Sammy Jackson’s latest project, entitled “With You”, was graciously funded by the Ontario Arts Council and FACTOR. “With You” is a five-track EP featuring original compositions in collaboration with vocalist and songwriter Jacqueline Teh. This project showcases music that is honest and relatable while exploring themes of vulnerability, broken relationships, and love. Sammy’s distinct approach to songwriting captivates a diverse audience through her blend of various elements of Jazz, R&B, and Pop. Additionally, “With You” features some of Canada’s most outstanding musicians, including Thomas Fleming (guitar), Chris Pruden (piano), Mark Godfrey (bass) and Ian Wright (drums).

Jazz Album of the Year, Group: Andy Milne and Unison, The reMission
For over 25 years, JUNO Award winning pianist/composer Andy Milne has demonstrated boundless versatility, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, poets and musicians spanning jazz, classical, pop, folk, and world music. A former student of Oscar Peterson, Milne has performed with a range of artists including Cassandra Wilson, Ralph Alessi, and Bruce Cockburn, and has composed, performed and produced scores for seven films by acclaimed actor/director William Shatner.

With UNISON, enriched with creative insights from all his projects, Milne explores the intimacy of the piano trio. The synchronistic relationship Milne has enjoyed with bassist John Hébert since 2010 is matchlessly rounded out with drummer Clarence Penn, who represents complimentary threads within the fabric of Milne’s piano trio philosophy — the intersection of texture and groove. A recipient of numerous awards, Milne has twice received CMA’s New Jazz Works and is a full-time professor at The University of Michigan.

Reggae Recording of the Year, Group: Kirk Diamond, Let It Be Done

“‘Let It Be Done’ was written in light of the political climate and social unrest that has affected so many worldwide, myself included,” Kirk Diamond shares. “That’s directly, indirectly, or psychologically.”

The video was filmed in Uganda, a directive reflective of his creative works influenced by the philosophies of Haile Selassie and Marcus Garvey. “As a student of Garveyism, believing in the unification and empowerment of African-American men, women, and children under the banner of their collective African descent — and the repatriation of African slave descendants and profits to the African continent — I felt it was befitting to take it back to the motherland for the video.

Jazz Album of the Year, Group: Brandi Disterheft Trio with George Coleman, Surfboard
Bassist, singer, composer, Brandi Disterheft, relocated to NYC from Vancouver to begin an apprenticeship of Miles Davis’ bassist, Ron Carter. It’s not only her fiery bass playing that make audiences stand-up and holler, but also her innovative live shows as she sings in both English and French. Winning a JUNO for her “Debut” album, Brandi had the honor of recording with the legendary Hank Jones & Oliver Jones on the album “Pleased to Meet You” and has since performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and the Vienna Opera House.

Brandi’s fifth album, Surfboard (Justin Time), is her most accomplished yet. Featuring the legendary saxophonist George Coleman, “Surfboard” is a Brazilian Jazz album showcasing Brandi’s inventive writing, power-socket bass playing, and sweet ethereal vocals. With Portinho on drums who is now in his eighties having performed with Tania Maria, Airto Moreira, Herbie Mann, Charlie Rouse, Nancy Wilson, Harry Belafonte, Paquito De Rivera to name a few, and the pearly genius of pianist Klaus Mueller, this trio shines with slick vignette arrangements paying homage to composers from Carlos Jobim to bassist Sam Jones.

Instrumental Album of the Year: Bruce Cockburn, Crowing Ignites
One of Canada’s finest artists, Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, rock, and worldbeat styles while travelling to such far-flung places as Guatemala, Mali, Mozambique, and Nepal, and writing memorable songs about his ever-expanding world of wonders.

For his many achievements, the Ottawa-born artist has been honoured with 13 JUNO Awards, an induction into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, and has been made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

His commitment to growth has made Bruce Cockburn both an exemplary citizen and a legendary artist whose prized songbook will be celebrated for many years to come. In 2020 Cockburn celebrated his 50 year anniversary as a recording artist, alongside his long-time label True North Records, with the release of a vinyl box set.

Reggae Recording of the Year: Kirk Diamond, Let It Be Done
JUNO Award Winner Kirk Diamond is singer, songwriter, producer and social activist in his own right. Diamond has proven that there are no limits when high expectations of oneself and ones goals are achieved. Spreading musical messages of unity, inclusion, and love for all walks of life, The Movement Of Ahryel joins Kirk Diamond in delivering his greatness to reggae & dancehall lovers. Diamond was featured on CBC Music’s 10 Canadian Reggae Artists You Need To Hear and nominated for a JUNO Award for Best Reggae Recording for his single Love Inna We Heart produced by France-based Galang Records in 2015. The nostalgic ode to the 90’s has become a worldwide success steadily climbing various international charts such as the popular Canadian Reggae Chart heard on Rebel Vibez where it held the #1 spot and charted for over 19 weeks. In the Spring of 2017, Kirk released his debut EP Greater, “a story of my musical journey to this point with an optimistic look on what’s next to come,” said Diamond of the project. The EP’s eponymous song hit the #1 spot by the Fall, running 6 weeks consecutive with a total of 42 weeks on the chart. Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year: Crystal Shawanda, Church House Blues
Crystal Shawanda is an Indigenous musician, who grew up on the Wikwemikong reserve on an island in Ontario, Canada. Her parents taught her to sing and play guitar and encouraged her to play country songs, but she grew up in a home filled with the music her oldest brother loved most: the blues.

She was signed as a country artist to RCA Records in 2007 producing a Top 20 hit on country radio, sold over 50,000 copies in the US, went Top 20 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart, but left Crystal feeling like a fish out of water. While on the road promoting the album, visiting radio stations she wrote “The Whole World’s Got the Blues,” inspired by the music she loved to overhear in her youth. Now signed to True North Records, Church House Blues is Crystal’s fourth blues album.

Crystal has performed for the Obamas in the 2013 Inauguration and she has served as a board of directors for Nike 7 for the past 11 years. She is a world-class motivational speaker and speaks regularly to colleges, communities and reserves, delivering her thoughts on never giving up and truly believing in yourself. Crystal delivers that message in everything she does. “When It Comes To Love” went to #1 on the Indigenous Countdown, and the album was Top 10 on the Living Blues Radio Chart in the United States.

Blues Album of the Year: Crystal Shawanda, Church House Blues
or her second album on True North Records, Nashville-based singer Crystal Shawanda has channeled the spirit and strength of blues greats such as Etta James and Koko Taylor, paired with a contemporary delivery that makes the 10 tracks on Church House Blues a rousing testament to her powerful vocal and songwriting abilities.

Recorded at several Nashville area studios, Crystal Shawanda says that the recording sessions for Church House Blues allowed her to express herself without feeling like anyone was looking over her shoulder. “This is the most I’ve ever loved an album out of everything I’ve ever done,” she offers. “This is really who I am. It’s my most definitive album yet. All these songs reflect different aspects of who I am. It’s putting a finger on that definitively. I’m not trying to prove anything. I’m just being me. I’m done with trying to fit in.”
