Inside Game of Thrones: A Story In Score By The Composer Of The Hit Television Show

0

Ramin Djawadi, a musician most known for composing the music for Game of Thrones, shared his thoughts around how he scores a soundtrack for such a varied series. Like the very best of musical directors and instrumentalists, he continues to stride the line between introducing the audience to a new theme song or background music, but in such a way as to not overwhelm the audience and being a distraction to the action onscreen.

The biggest challenge was just finding the right tone for the show, that when you hear the score, that you know this is Game of Thrones. From the beginning, we knew we wanted themes, but we also knew that we couldn’t have too many themes right away, because there’s obviously a lot of characters. There’s a lot of different houses, there’s a lot of plots. And if you convolute it too soon, I think it actually would have been confusing for the audience.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Unveils New Visual For “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)” For The Hamilton Mixtape

0

Hamilton Uptown/Atlantic Records has announced today’s release of an official companion visual to “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done),” directed by Tomás Whitmore and executive produced by Robert Rodriguez and Lin-Manuel Miranda, performed by K’naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC, & Residente of Calle 13, and featured on the groundbreaking #1 album, “THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE.” The visual was introduced this morning by HAMILTON’s Pulitzer Prize, Tony, GRAMMY and Emmy Award-winning creator Lin-Manuel Miranda on NBC’s TODAY. The “Immigrants” video is streaming now via http://www.today.com and the official HAMILTON YouTube channel.

The “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)” visual arrives in time for an exclusive sweepstakes presented in association with Prizeo.com. Fans can enter the contest for as little as $10; with all proceeds benefiting the Immigrants: We Get The Job Done Coalition, an alliance of immigration-focused non-profits throughout the US assembled by The Hispanic Federation. One grand prize winner will be flown and housed with a guest for the long awaited Los Angeles opening of HAMILTON, the star-studded after party, and meet and greet with Miranda. For complete details, please see www.prizeo.com/Hamilton.

In addition, Miranda – with help from Stephen and Ayesha Curry – has also unveiled the #Ham4All Challenge, inviting fans, fellow artists, athletes, and other luminaries to support and raise funds for the Immigrants: We Get The Job Done Coalition by making a donation and singing their favorite song from HAMILTON and then challenging others to do the same. Entrants can then share their video across social media tagging #Ham4All, http://www.prizeo.com/Hamilton, and the subject of the challenge.

Miranda will continue to support the “Immigrants” visual as well as the Prizeo campaign and #Ham4All Challenge with a much-anticipated appearance on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, set for Thursday, June 29th (check local listings). As if all that weren’t enough, “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)” also kicks off a special “Rise Up Eyes Up Wise Up” playlist created by Miranda and featured on the official HAMILTON Spotify.

“THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE” made a groundbreaking debut atop the SoundScan/Billboard 200 upon its release last year, entering the overall chart at #1 with 187,000 total album equivalent units – the greatest sales week for any compilation since 2012 and the first compilation to hit #1 since 2014.

Executive produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Craig Kallman, Riggs Morales, and The Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson & Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter, “THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE” was an immediate sensation, rocketing to #1 on the iTunes Store’s “Top Albums” chart on its first day in release. “THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE” sees songs from the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical covered and remixed by a remarkable cast of contemporary artists. Superstars contributing to the one of its kind collection include Sia, Usher, Common, Alicia Keys, Wiz Khalifa, Chance The Rapper, The Roots, Regina Spektor, Busta Rhymes, Nas, Miguel, Ben Folds, Queen Latifah, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, and Jimmy Fallon. “THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE” further includes two previously unreleased HAMILTON demos, “Valley Forge” and “Cabinet Battle 3.”

“THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE” – which has received a wide array of praise from publications including Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and Complex, to name a few – was also heralded by a series of high profile television performances, with Kelly Clarkson offering an emotional rendition of “It’s Quiet Uptown” on NBC’s TODAY and The Roots teaming with Busta Rhymes and Joel Ortiz for an anthemic “My Shot” on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The winner of the 2016 GRAMMY Award for “Best Musical Theatre Album,” “HAMILTON (ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING),” is available now in stores, DSPs, and streaming services. The 3x RIAA platinum certified album made a stunning arrival on the Billboard charts upon its initial digital release, coming in at #1 on the “Top Broadway Albums” chart, #3 on the “Top Rap Albums” chart, and #9 on the “Top Current Albums” chart. This impressive debut stands as the biggest first week sales for a digital cast recording and the second biggest first week sales ever for any cast recording, behind only “RENT” in the Nielsen SoundScan era. What’s more, “HAMILTON” debuted at #12 on the overall SoundScan/Billboard 200 based on strong album sales, track sales and over 2.1 million streams across all digital service providers. The cast recording’s success was exclaimed as “an eye-popping debut” by Billboard, noting other achievements including the “Largest Debut Sales Week for a Digital Cast Album” and “Highest Charting Cast Album Since 2011.”

The best-selling cast album of 2015, “HAMILTON (ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING)” continued to make chart history in the weeks and months following its arrival. The album eventually ascended to the #1 spot on Billboard’s “Top Rap Albums” – the first and only cast recording to ever reach the chart’s pole position. Fueled by HAMILTON’s triumphant night at the 70th Annual Tony Awards, “HAMILTON (ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING)” climbed to #3 on the overall SoundScan/Billboard 200, marking its first week in the top 10, the highest charting cast recording in five years, and one of only three cast recordings to ever reach the top 10 in the last half century. To date, “HAMILTON (ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING)” stands the 10th best-selling cast recording of the Nielsen SoundScan era.

Produced by Alex Lacamoire, Bill Sherman, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson & Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter, founding members of the GRAMMY®-winning hip-hop band, The Roots, “HAMILTON (ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING)” marks the first album to be mixed and mastered at the legendary Atlantic Records Studio in New York City.

The Doors Singles Collection Includes Quad Blu-ray

0

The Doors’ 50th anniversary celebration continues this summer with three new collections that spotlight every single and B-side the band released in the U.S., all gathered together for the first time.

THE SINGLES will be available in multiple formats listed below on September 15 from Rhino.

2-CD – All 20 U.S. singles with their corresponding B-sides, plus four mono radio versions
2-CD/Blu-ray – All the content from 2-CD version plus the 1973 compilation The Best Of The Doors in Quad on Blu-ray for the first time
7-Inch Vinyl Box – All 20 U.S. singles with their corresponding B-sides on twenty 7-inch vinyl 45s with original sleeve art and labels, presented in an ornate, lift-top box. Limited to 10,000 copies worldwide
Audio will also be available on digital download and streaming services

THE SINGLES shows the creative chemistry shared by drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and vocalist Jim Morrison; four brilliant artists who made The Doors one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands.

The collection includes the single versions from all six of the landmark studio albums the quartet released between 1967 and 1971, including classics like “People Are Strange,” “Love Her Madly” and “Riders On The Storm.” Also included on the CD versions are four mono radio versions of some of the band’s biggest hits, such as “Hello, I Love You” and “Touch Me,” which have never been made available anywhere after being sent to radio around their original release. The B-sides – many of which are making their CD debut – add another dimension to the band’s legacy with such stellar tracks as “Who Scared You,” which appeared in March 1969 as the flipside to “Wishful Sinful,” and a cover of Willie Dixon’s “(You Need Meat) Don’t Go No Further,” which was paired with the 1971 smash “Love Her Madly.”

THE SINGLES also features several songs released after Morrison’s passing in 1971. Among those recordings are tracks the surviving trio recorded together (“Tightrope Ride” and “The Mosquito”), as well as live selections from posthumous releases (“Roadhouse Blues” and “Gloria.”)

The Blu-ray disc that accompanies the expanded version of THE SINGLES features a high-resolution Quadraphonic mix of The Best Of The Doors. This 11-song compilation, available on Blu-ray for the first time, was remixed specifically for Quad in 1973 and offers a unique sonic experience on songs like “Soul Kitchen,” “Moonlight Drive” and “Love Me Two Times.”

The summer is already a busy one for the Doors. The group will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first #1 hit on July 28 with a limited edition, 7” vinyl reissue of “Light My Fire” that features artwork from the Japanese version of the single and is limited to 7,500 copies.

Nickelback with Daughtry and Shaman’s Harvest at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage

Shaman’s Harvest started the night off with style, this band hails from Missouri and I have just recently discovered this band thanks to Spotify. It was their cover song of Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” that caught my attention and now is permanently on my Spotify list. They were a perfect fit for Nickelback’s “Feed The Machine Tour” and I can’t wait until they come back to town. They explained to everyone in attendance that this was their first time in Canada, and that seeing their name on the huge LED wall was “we is highfalutin up here”. It was unfortunate that the venue wasn’t even half full at this point. I wish more people would come for the openers, you never know what you may find.

Daughtry was next up, and I was thrilled they were on the bill. I recently caught their acoustic show at a venue not far from Toronto and was happy I was finally able to see the full show. Chris was full of energy as he moved around on stage with ease, they made the most of their 45 min set. I was a bit taken aback when they started a cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” but much to my surprise they did a good job. Nothing quite like covering such an iconic song. Chris asked the audience to help them sing “Over You” and to sing along “kinda little sitting in the car waiting for the one line you know, and then you kill that shit” in which the fans happily obliged. As Chris started “Over You” he proceeded to sing out of key not once but twice, but had a good laugh over it. Seeing this reaction made everyone in the venue smile, and I can’t wait until they come back and kill it again.

50 million cds sold, countless hits and a jam packed Budweiser Stage, Nickelback didn’t hold anything back on Tuesday night. Even the skies decided to co-operate and the rain stayed clear of the Budweiser Stage so we could enjoy the show. The beer was flowing freely throughout the 16,000+ in attendance and if you ask me that is an awful lot of closet Nickelback fans out there. Starting off the night with “Feed The Machine”, which is also the name of their new CD, the fans jumped to their feet and waved their hands in the air for the rest of this 2 hour show.

Alcohol seemed to be the theme of the evening as Chad stated he may or may not be nursing a hangover as he explained that they came into town the night before and may or may not have gone to an adult establishment. Talking about Jell-O shots all the way to tape worms, the banter between Chad and the fans was witty to say the least. I found myself laughing quite a few times throughout the evening. Some bands I have seen recently need to up their banter game a bit more. The audience wants to feel involved and Chad had no problems doing this, even passing a pitcher of shots to fans in the front row to share.

The stage set up was very similar to the last time Nickelback was in town. Behind the stage set up of the normal gear, there was an enourmous LED wall that showed video of the performance, video effects and b roll from videos. The circle trusses surrounded the LED wall with bright moving lights. I do have to make mention that I miss the stage show from years ago, the over the top, larger than life pyro needs to make a come back.

Nickelback didn’t need any help getting the audience involved at all but they went one step further by incorporating The Tragically Hip song “Blow At High Dough” into their song “Too Bad” which of course, the fans went crazy for being in “Hip Country”. Smart way to win over the fans but honestly I don’t think Nickelback needed any help, there was nothing but love in the audience for them.

There was one unsuspecting fan in the crowd that had the surprise of a lifetime. Chad brought a gentleman on stage to sing “Rockstar”. “Ok let’s play karaoke does anyone want to come sing with us? Does anyone know all the words to Rockstar?” Chad found someone in the audience that he apparently knew, a fire fighter, and proceeded to tell him as his nerves were probably at the highest point, “When you start feeling the butterflies just remember one thing, YouTube is forever!” As far as I am concerned this guy did a great job and you can probably see for yourself because it is all over the Internet by now.

The whole night wasn’t all about their hit songs, even though they played a lot of them (Lullaby, Animals, Stand Together, just to name a few). They played a few new ones as well. Chad asked the crowd “If we play one of those songs do you promise not to go take a piss and get a beer, I have been guilty of this”. Sorry Chad, as much as I love you guys, I am guilty as well. If it is any consolation I could still hear the song on my travels.

I can safely say if there were any birds nests, cobwebs, or any debris in the rafters of the Budweiser Stage it is now laying comfortably on the venue floor. That was one loud show.

Once again thanks to the crew because without them there is no show!
